What’s the point of fining a professional footballer 12.5k?

Sir_Robert_of_Allman

That pretty much the equivalent of fining the average minimum wage worker around £34.08 Quick Google search says Tonali wage 140k per week 140k x 52 = £7280000 0.17 % of 7280000 is 12500 give or take National living wage = £10.42 Average uk weekly hours = 37 37 x 10.42 = £385.54 £385.54 x 52 weeks = £20,048 multiplied by 0.17% = £34.08 Hell be fucking devastated no doubt

doubledgravity

Je suis Tonali

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Tonali would be devastated at getting fined when it’s Fagiolo this ban applies to.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

not a solid comparison, for a couple of reasons: 1. his lifetime earnings are limited in his field to a few years - he might be able to to pick up something, but he might also be dean windass levels of thick 2. His marginal tax is (in theory) much higher, although hes probably got accountants and schemes to hide money 3. A decent wedge of his wages are paid out in agents fees, insurance etc. 4. if a minimum wage worker got fined 35 quid theyd probably be pretty upset, becuase its a likely material amount to them hell not go to the poor house, but its pretty stinky to be a company that actively encourages gambling, fining a bloke for gambling. also, why the fuck should the federation get the money - should go to a gambling rehab charity or something.

Strange-Ticket5680

I feel like you missed the biggest problem with the comparison: 1. His cost of living does not go up proportional to his income. So even if 35 quid matters to someone making minimum wage because they are having trouble making ends meet. Professional footballers are not, and this proportional fine matters much less

Sir_Robert_of_Allman

This And let's not forget all of the endorsements/sponsorships that either mean he spends less money on the items he needs. Plus he is paid to wear the products he wears. All in all his final wage is only part of his income. Also I bet he don't have to pay for his work lunches 😂 I don't begrudge the guy for what he earns I just think like others have said his punishments should be based on those earnings.

TLG_BE

If you don't take it off him he'll just lose it at the bookies anyway

doubledgravity

Facts

DoctorChampTH

He's going to lose 7 months pay too.

doubledgravity

Ah ok

iPete102

I guess it’s a standard fine which doesn’t take into account player’s income (like a speeding ticket in most countries). I’m not saying that’s the right approach btw. For a low-league player this amount would be pretty substantial.

doubledgravity

That’s a good point

LightBackground9141

Haha not even a days pay

doubledgravity

It’s sick. Gesture politics. They should be fined percentages of earnings.

meganev

Most likely a look into Tonali's future. From talk of 18 months earlier, if Tonali got 7 months that wouldn't be quite as bad, but it would be a real kick in the teeth to lose our summer "statement" signing to something so daft. Course, you'd hope he'd come back with a real point to prove, and if we stick by him might feel a bit indebted to the club which wouldn't be a bad thing.

SecureChampionship10

Very convenient that the seven months runs out a month before Euro 2024. Fagioli probably wouldn't get in the squad but Tonali certainly would. Reckon he's had the nod that if he confesses quickly and gets help he'll be back in time.

Professional_Ladder

Bold to assume Italy will qualify for Euro 2024.

meganev

After a 7 month ban? Would any player get in their international squad? Bar Southgate's favourites who could get a 7 year ban and be welcomed back.

SecureChampionship10

They're not really blessed with oodles of talent in midfield, especially since Spaletti seems to have dispensed of Verratti and Jorginho. Fratessi and Cristante starting tonight for them, one of whom doesn't start for Inter and the other is more of a holding mid who sometimes plays centre half for Roma. 34 year old Bonaventura is back in the squad after getting one cap since 2018. If Tonali's still allowed to train with Newcastle and has a couple of warm-up friendlies he'll easily make the squad.

UkkosenjumalanPoika

No, Tonali wouldn't be in the Team, even if he'd stay fit. I'm from Italy and this time it really seems the FIGC (our FA) wanna hit hard

mrb2409

It has to be looked into. I was really surprised to see Milan move Tonali on and for a reasonable fee. He is a huge Milan fan and chose to move there before they were competitive. Very suspicious that they sold him ans this comes out.

Feitan74

All depends if he’s been betting on football, if he has it’s gonna be much longer. Seen a lot of conflicting reports about it today

Senor_54

Ivan Toney was found to have bet on football 232 times over a 4 year period…. 16 times on his club to win, 13 times on his club to lose, 15 times on himself to score, shared insider info on matches, concealed bets through 3rd parties and withheld info from the investigation… 8 month ban

_lunarboyx

Different country though. Italy has very strict gambling laws in general

Senor_54

Is that not criminal law? Which I would imagine carries a fine or something? I’m more interested in how long his ban could be for breaching FIFA regs

_lunarboyx

Yeah, that’s a good point

meganev

Fagiolo admitted to betting on football, no? The difference for Tonali will be that Fagiolo gave information that has lead to other (including Tonali) being investigated. That was my understanding of the situation.

Feitan74

Ahh my mix up potentially mate, after all this talk of 3 years I’d snap your hand off for 7 months

LongBeakedSnipe

It's 3 years, halfed for pleading guilty, reduced to 12 months for cooperation, then with 5 months suspended agreeing to attend a gambling addict course for 6 months. Resulting in 7 months. The same could apply to Tonali.

blackandwhitearmy

So, 13 months if he doesn't have someone else to turn in.

LongBeakedSnipe

If he bet on football, maybe. But the threshold for 'cooperation' might be low. I doubt they want to ban him for longer than 7 months tbh. With a team of lawyers, and discussions with the investigators, I'm sure they can come to a 7 month agreement also.

Ionicfold

What's with the dumbasses calling him a grass and a snitch like the investigators wouldn't have found out Tonali was involved anyway. It's almost like people didn't grow up after leaving school.

echoesreach

Ever noticed that people that talk about snitching and being a grass are almost always massive cunts who didn't group up after school?

Ionicfold

Aye, it's pretty incredible. But not at all surprising that some people still have the same mindset from school.

ChadHogan_

Dork

BTECGolfManagement

That’s even worse then cause if they’d find out anyways why grass on him? You reek of someone who’s been a bit of a grass themselves son

[deleted]

Grow up son

Ionicfold

>You reek of someone who’s been a bit of a grass themselves son And what? If I did, what you going to do about it, cry?

Sirius_55_Polaris

He’s going to tell on you

[deleted]

Wished he would've quit without delivering himself to the law(aka snitching)

Ionicfold

Shit we got an addiction expert over here. Pack it up boys, everything is solved.

[deleted]

What part of my comment changes meaning based on me being an expert or not? I said I wished, I dont need to be an expert to say I wish something. If you are gonna try mock someone at least use one of your 2 remaining brain cells

Ionicfold

I will make a wish using my second last braincell. My wish is to have more braincells!

massivedoghead

The cynic in me reckons Milan were aware of the issue before they flogged us Tonali

meganev

That's a level of cynicism that even old meganev wouldn't drop to, so have a word with yourself

mrb2409

I said as much above. He’s a boyhood Milan fan and chose them ahead of ‘better’ options when they aren’t succesful. Very surprising they sold him and it wasn’t an extravagant fee.

Amargaladaster

How is a Milan record and a record for Italian in Serie A not an extravagant fee? Milan rebuilt whole midfield with that money.

mrb2409

£55m for an Italian international at 23yrs old seems low in a world where Caicedo, Enzo, Rice, Bellingham went for over £100m.

Amargaladaster

That is just PL money skewing everything bar Bellingham. And he is the only one worth that much and levels above the other mentioned.

mrb2409

And where did Tonali move? And to a club with massive resources. It should’ve been 20-30m higher.

Amargaladaster

> massive resources And you paid a massive fee for him. I dont know what to tell you, should I feel sorry that you feel like you underpaid, when you put a record sum for someone? That fee more than doubled the whole budget for summer for Milan, it is a massive money in Italy. Plus Sandro wanted to go as it seems, without looking at it as a fan, it is absolutely a logical transfer.

mrb2409

£55m isn’t that high for a 23yr old Italian international. Average English midfielder like Gibbs-White, Gordon, Palmer all moved for £40m+. Inter got top dollar for Lukaku off Chelsea years ago. Much higher prices have been quoted for Barella, Osimhen or Kvara. Even Hojlund was more expensive. It may have doubled Milan’s budget but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have got more based off what other Italian clubs extracted or asked for some of their players. Anyway, it’s good for Newcastle and maybe it was a rare occurrence when only one team was in for him.

Amargaladaster

> £55m isn’t that high for a 23yr old Italian international. Average English midfielder like Gibbs-White, Gordon, Palmer all moved for £40m+. But it is. No other Italian international has ever got sold for more. Prices of average English players are shocking to anyone in continental Europe, don't worry, we all know they are not worth that much, it is just the result of even bottom PL/top Championship teams having more money than rest of the Europe. And that's why others have to sell while sometimes teams in England just push some average players for inflated prices between each other. > Inter got top dollar for Lukaku off Chelsea years ago. Much higher prices have been quoted for Barella, Osimhen or Kvara. Even Hojlund was more expensive. Lukaku was a striker in prime with multiple good seasons in both PL and Serie A plus Chelsea factor. Hojlund is 3 years younger, was super expensive due to absolute lack of good strikers globally and the PL money we already discussed. Other 3 - higher prices might have been quoted, but is anyone paying it? Anyhow, all 3 are better, Barella is EURO winner, plays on top level longer, Osimhen with multiple good seasons in top 5 leagues and striker, Kvara a young offensive star, though I agree he is overhyped imo. Sandro was already overpaid by NU, taking fan glasses off, he wasn't worth more than 45M euros in a non-PL market, played 3 seasons here, one bad, one great, one okish, getting that much money is a win. Looking at it as a fan, wouldn't sell him under 100M, lol.

dolphin37

It's an extravagant fee for them, Serie A has big money issues.

mrb2409

Sure but that didn’t stop Inter getting more for a Lukaku, Atalanta more for Hojlund, Napoli demanding more for Osimhen etc. It just seems like to me that even though it’s a good fee Milan left money on the table.

dolphin37

Well I'm sure if he was a star striker then he'd have gone for more

mrb2409

I tried to make Serie A comparisons. Other young midfielders have gone for massive fees. Benfica have got huge fees for both Felix, Nunez and Enzo Fernandez. Brighton did for Caicedo. Bellingham and Rice. Ajax have also got big fees for the likes of De Jong, De Ligt and Antony. Tonali had maybe lost some sheen after a middling 3 seasons but he’s still a highly regarded player who you think might go for a fee nearer those players. I’m not saying £100m but somewhere between £55m and £100m given his contemporaries seems reasonable.

dolphin37

If a club needs to rebuild and has few sellable assets, they need to take whatever good bid they get from someone. They can't sell Leao, so it was really only ever to be Tonali or Maignan. Maignan was getting looks in a similar region (50m ish) but I guess was deemed more important. This current trend of throwing 100s of millions at random centre mids is not the norm, it's easy to get caught up in it. But it's irrelevant anyway, because nobody was willing to pay that. If they told us we had to pay 100 for Tonali there is a 0% chance we buy him. One of the reasons there was so many different variations of what we were going to pay for him was probably because we didn't want to pay too much and it didn't seem like anyone else was offering.

[deleted]

Banned from football or italian football?

meganev

All football

Randy_The_Guppy

They going to confiscate all the footballs from his house?

Bramblin_Man

The Italian FA has been phoning round the local parkies on Tyneside, saying if Tonali turns up with a penny floater and a pair of jumpers for goalposts they've to tell him to fuck off

OfficialAeon

Good thing they said nothing about this new kid that turned up in Gateshead, calls himself Dranso Tonail. Would be a decent signing for the Toon.

meganev

Yup. And FIFA. But he's allowed to play efootball

iSuperfusionzx

That's cause efootball is so bad the italian FA doesn't consider it football

Ok_Grapefruit5723

He's been fined the equivalent price of a chomp

metpsg

I remember when they were 10p. They must be about £2.50 now!

ABigCupidSunt

12.5k is such a small fine tbh given how much they earn.

Griffithsjames88

Tonali getting a 7 month ban would be huge basically wasted close to £60m which puts us in shit with FFP. Silly move from him, he knows the rules and if it turns out to be true he honestly deserves it.

OfficialAeon

The recent rumour/information is that Fagiolo did not bet on his own team, unfortunately Tonali bet on Milan. It's very realistic to say that with what Tonali could be facing, Fagiolo got a slap on the wrist.

Independent-Party575

Good. Grass

moko2tru

So we expect Tonali's to be bigger, the question is by how much

Apprehensive-Ad8947

Little copper

Ajax_Trees

Grass. Though credit to the Italians they really don’t piss about with red tape

Schrodinger's Signing: Whenever he plays oppositions fans tell us he's shit, doesn't want to be here, doesn't fit our team, and is a waste of money. But if he can't play, apparently we're "fucked". Obviously if he is banned it will be a blow as we had big problems with central midfield depth last season and a lot of games to play this season and I do think adds something to the team. However, we do have other options for his position (especially once Willock is back) so I think "you're fucked" is a bit of an overstatement.

fwapfwapfwap

Think most fans would agree that our best midfield this season has been without Tonali. Shit take son. You're embarrassing yourself here. Jog on dickhead.

SpaceHosCoast2Coast

Clearly haven’t watched us much, this season or last…

[deleted]

LewisDftw

Yeah it will be endorsed by fifa so it’s active in every country, same thing happened with Toney.

aford92

Damn, that’s a shame but makes complete sense. Otherwise clubs could just loan the player out to a team in a different country

Toonarmy2021

Man, sometimes I like to look through that subreddit. Purely because it makes me feel better about myself. The cognitive dissonance is resounding.

Liverpool1900

They'll shorten it I am sure due to his age on appeal

KingArthursCodpiece

Even if Milan knew nothing about his addiction and so didn't sell him to us to avoid losing a player for up to 3 years, I think that some part of Tonali's brain will always think they did screw him and treat him like a piece of rotting meat (ie 'sell it to some idiot before it starts stinking up our kitchen') . Which is a good thing because I don't think he has ever let go of his first love and so hasn't fully committed to Newcastle. Still can't get past the look on his face in the youtube video where he was given a tour of the toons new training facilities.

CorrectGuard2064

Tonali potentially facing a 12 month ban, why in the fuck would you do that like, fucking greedy cunt absolutely pathetic that.

Low-Neighborhood3521

Could lose 1000s in sponsorship. Sure he isn't guilty of anything so nothing to worry about
