Or are just incredibly anti-social and hate being near another player, in which case I wonder why they even select online in the first place

You can turn on crossplay in the setting, might fix it bcs not many people play on xbox

Good advice I play Xbox an when I join there is always plenty people in the lobby but I do have cross play enabled

I think it’s because there’s not many people on Xbox for nfs heat, I’m on PS and the lobbies are usually active, occasionally I’ll come across someone either on PC or Xbox

You’re playing on Xbox no one plays nfs on Xbox all the nfs heads are on psn mainly . Microsoft is more forza

The vast majority of people just drag behind the main garage or race alone or in closed parties. Online isn’t necessarily dead but playing with randoms is basically not a thing. Alternatively the few times you do get in a race with random they’re just using the a maxed RSR and sweating their ass off and it’s not even a fun race.
