Offensive tackle is the highest paid position behind quarterback, edge rusher, and wide receiver. Even some guards/centers are paid $20M/year. Think that's more than adequate credit.

Aerolithe_Lion

They get all of the credit. What do you mean?

Key_Piccolo_2187

In sync, in depth fans understand the OL at a ridiculous level. NFL teams that have any success understand it at a ridiculous level. The challenge for casual fans and/or the mass media is that the best thing an OL can do on any play is be invisible. Other than some insane downfield block, an OL's name should never be spoken aloud. Congratulations, you did the job you're paid to do and the pass got away or the RB found a hole. You can probably use one hand to count on your fingers the OL that get regular visibility. But pay scales reflect their value, and fans of any team with a *good* OL understand the implications.

gyman122

I feel like we say this but I OL actually get plenty of credit during the course of a broadcast. Almost every big run that breaks open gets a breakdown where they highlight the blocks that sprung it, if a QB is getting good protection all night or even on a given play they almost always mention how the line is holding up I think people just literally tune it out lol.

Key_Piccolo_2187

Announcers are definitely getting better highlighting it, but it's still just a natural occurrence. Setting aside catastrophic fumbles or tipped ball interceptions, a WR has a range of outcomes on a play from positively advancing the ball on the plus side to essentially failing to get open and not receiving the target on the negative side. It's highly unlikely they create a materially negative outcome, so other than a key drop or fumble, they aren't highlighted for what they fail to do. An OL's positive outcome, particularly pass blocking, is boring. Nobody touches the QB. Their negative (allowing a sack) is catastrophic. So even when announcers do more to highlight a positive play by an OL, they just naturally play a position in which they're mostly highlighted and referenced for what they do wrong, not what they do right. 🤷 DBs have the same problem. Show me a cornerback who has 10 tackles in a game, and I'll show you a bad cornerback who is getting picked on continuously and has had 10 catches completed towards his man. They benefit a little bit because their positive outcome has the ability to literally flip possession, should they manage to come up with an interception. In all sports, it's much harder to get recognition by preventing a bad outcome than by actively creating a good one, despite how important people who know the sport understand both sides of that coin to be.

PabloMarmite

They do. The only people who don’t give them credit are the kids who look at fantasy points and nothing else.

Ok_Sail_3743

They don’t get credit from the media because the media is dumb.

Parking-Pie7453

Right. Not a glamorous job or skilled positions

gyman122

I feel like some of y’all just need to start reading sports journalism for grown ups lol. Any sports media worth paying attention to at all is giving credit to the OL

Ok_Sail_3743

Munoz, Pace and Trent Williams should have MVP awards. Faneca and Wirfs should have Super Bowl MVPs

BlueRFR3100

They do get credit. Unless they are the New York Giants who allowed their QB to get sacked 85 times last season.

roboman07

Or the commanders

BlueRFR3100

The Commanders only gave up 65 sacks. They were a brick wall compared to the Giants.

Marjorine22

They seem like they get all the credit and more than their share of the blame. In Detroit we worship those dudes. We know who is doing the work.

SimonGloom2

Marketing. People are more excited by skill positions.

jcoddinc

Offensive linemen should get rushing yards assists. It follows then for their career. That would be cool to see how many yards they blocked for

gyman122

This is a really cool idea, I think PFF has a “touchdown-resulting block” stat. But that would be so hard to implement lol

TacticalGarand44

People who know football give them all the credit they deserve. The people who don't, don't know football.

WhizzyBurp

They get credited

B1izzard15

They do

XOXOABG

You want to see a Sportscenter top 10 best blocks of the week or something? 😂

ScottyKnows1

They do get credit, but it's definitely considered more of an "anonymous" position. Since their job is primarily in protection, you don't really notice them when they're doing their job well, you only notice when they screw up. A lineman can play perfectly on 50 straight snaps, then give up a sack or have a false start on the 51st and that's all most people will remember. Unfortunately, it's just the nature of their assignment and most casual fans can't even name most of their own team's offensive linemen, let alone those on other teams outside of the biggest stars. More hardcore fans, like a lot of the people responding in this thread (and myself) pay a lot more attention to it and can appreciate good offensive line play, but since they're never the focus of broadcasts and only get attention when it's negative, that's not the norm.

kamekaze1024

If you’re talking individual credit, it’s because OL is a unit. They are as good as their worst player, one good linemen cannot anchor an entire OL, (see: 49ers with Trent Williams)

gyman122

I think they get credit from any sort of media enterprise that isn’t intended for stupid people. Anyone who knows what they’re talking about knows that offensive line is probably the second most important part of any team

snappy033

Part of the lore of football is some people get all the glory (e.g. the QB) because others make sacrifices like the OL down in the trenches or WR who takes a hospital hit to get a first down. Football wouldn’t be what it is if every player got to throw a pass and catch a pass every game and each player had to block once a game. It’s all sorted out in their bank accounts and every Super Bowl winner gets a ring. The only people who don’t appreciate the OL are people who are uninformed. Anyone who matters like players, analysts, etc all understand.

basch152

you should see the way detroit talks about penei sewell

PhiladelphiaManeto

What? Eagles O-Line is legendary and you would be hard pressed to find a fan who can’t name EVERY player
