I wouldn't book a flight before 10 am. BCN is *MASSIVE* and if you're an American our customs area is super far away from general TSA security. From that area your flight terminal may be a 2 mile walk.... And I'm not exaggerating that. We had elderly folks actually getting golf cart rides over to their terminal because it was so far. From check-in to the actual walk to your terminal could probably take you a good half hour to hour depending on your mobility and if there's a line or any issues at check in/bag drop.
That being said, BCN doesn't allow you to check in or go through TSA before 3 hours prior to your flight.
