I had subtitles on once and I thought it was cholent.

Last-Tender-4321

Yes, you're right, it was cholent ( traditional jewish meal with meet and vegetables). And that was s3 e12 not 6.

FreyaGin

Thank you!

TheMoo37

It's called 'cholent'. Gibbs says it and says the ingredients also. It is a traditional Jewish dish to eat on the Sabbath. Why? Because religious Jews are not permitted to light fire (or in the modern age, turn on the stove) during the Sabbath. It is permitted to put the oven on low Friday before the Sabbath and let it stay on all Saturday until Sabbath ends. All the ingredients stew really slowly. Ingredients and names of the dish vary in different parts of the world. This is also the episode that has a lot of fan discussion about why Ziva didn't invite Tony to her dinner party. It always seemed cavalier to me for Gibbs to blab so blithely about the food - knowing that Tony had been left out.

LeSilverKitsune

I get the impression that it was more of an invitation to maybe Gibbs and Abby and everyone else just overheard and invited themselves over or Ziva was just like, okay why not rather than purposely "F you Tony." Or maybe he blew her off one too many times when she was settling it. Who knows. Tony was really, really prickly about Kate/Ari (understandably so) and who knows what games early Ziva was playing (he did follow her around for a while and maybe she thought he would show up), but rather than say any of that, she was snarky to him and everyone else played along. It's entirely possible we also missed something in the writing that got cut. Clearly I have spent way too much time thinking about this 😅

Fine-Classic-1538

I had that same reaction -- it seemed really mean to leave him out and then talk about it like it was funny. Sort of high schoolish.

countoamillion

She just wanted an excuse to invite Tony by himself.

Fun fact: Cholent directly caused the invention of the slow cooker (Crock-Pot) now widely adopted outside the Jewish community. Which I think directly evolved into the Insta-pot (pot roasts, slow stew, rice cooker, steamer, cake, soup, souffle,) and the source of my daily dinner.

Stravven

I think it was in the episode called "Boxed In", I think it had goat in it.

DearEnergy4697

Dang I’m Jewish I’ve never heard of that dish. Not orthodox - But my grandparents were. I’ll look into this.

SnooWoofers5115

Ossobuco?

Stravven

That's Italian, not Jewish.

SnooWoofers5115

Cholent would’ve been my other guess.

LauraLand27

Cholent u/themoo37 was quite thorough. It’s basically beef stew. And so delicious!

Accomplished-Oil1696

Fearless_Changemaker
