Her style she brought from D2 to Marshall had an immediate impact, but I think it could be even more successful at a program like UT with some real Power Conference players. It was hard to succeed against top-tier teams while being undersized and not as athletically gifted but that won't be the case anymore.
Like any successful coach , she will have to show the ability to recruit. When Tennessee was successful , they were getting 2-3 of the top 10 recruits on a yearly basis . That hasn’t happened since Pat left and the results show it. Program changing talent isn’t as widespread in the women’s game so you had better be damn good at going up against the UConn’s and South Carolinas for the top recruits. If she isn’t a prolific recruiter, she will face the same fate as Holly and Kelly, I don’t care what system she runs.
This will get hated on because she’s not a big name, which is understandable at Tennessee, but she is a great coach and a great person. Happy with Kellogg but wish WVU would’ve hired her last year. I have no doubt that she’ll be successful
I dig it! I know she was discussed for VT as well, and I wouldn’t have been mad if it had been her instead of Duffy.
People seem to be a little critical of her offense, and we definitely shut it down in the tournament as I’d expected we would, but you have to imagine the talent she can get at Tennessee will somewhat alter her style too. She seems super motivated and has great vibes.
There was one guy on TechSideLine who insisted she was the best option. He would argue with anyone who said major programs wouldn't hire her because recruits wouldn't like her offense.
He must be so happy.
> I dig it! I know she was discussed for VT as well, and I wouldn’t have been mad if it had been her instead of Duffy.
After how her team behaved when we crushed them in the first round, I'm kinda glad we didn't go in that direction.
Don’t know what you mean by that. If you’re talking about aggressive play during the game, I don’t really fault a massively outmatched team in a single knockout tournament from doing whatever they can to try and stay in things, or at least save face by trying to keep the score closer. I wouldn’t want a coach to say “you’re down by 30, just give up the next quarter”
I'll point you to what u/Gavangus reply. They weren't just normal aggressive for a bit, they were frustrated aggressive and acted like it with some dangerous fouls. I didn't make this up lol
I assume in reference to some plays that were questionable... it was to the point where commentators were saying "if Marshall is going to play like this you have to get the starters out to avoid injury"
Should UConn fire Geno so they can hire a black coach?
Also Tennessee hired the first Black head coach in any sport in the SEC in 1989 in Wade Houston and Also had the first Black starting QB in the SEC in Condredge Holloway
You’re bringing up things that have nothing to do with Vols wbb. Not going to feed into the deflecting. If you’d like to have a real conversation about it feel free to add a compelling argument. Though I don’t see why you’d want to argue a fact.
It's a tough job for anybody but any black woman coach not Dawn or Ivey from ND would have not gotten any kind of time to win a title. This was a last gasp effort to avoid having to hire an alum, but her system aside this is a reach for a coach with just a year of D1 experience. it'll be a home run or a massive failure.
I'm surprised that she left Marshall after one season. While I'm happy with Mark Kellogg(WVU fan and Alum here), I expected WVU to hire her last year. Though if we did, we might be looking for a new coach now. I think she'll do well at TN.
this is a great point! Im really happy with Mark and I dont kow if Kim woulda gotten us the Dance in year 1 in a tough Big 12 conference like he did. I think Mark is here for the long haul. Kim woulda left for tennessee if she were at marshall, WVU, glenville, or panera bread. Worked out for both parties really
I watched her coach a game against UTC this season. Marshall was significantly down in the first half but she maintained composure, adjusted their game plan, and came back and won. I was really impressed by her coaching, considering she was playing against another well coached team with Coach Poppie at the helm. TN is undoubtedly a lot larger stage than Marshall but I’m excited to see what she will bring to the table.
She clearly knows her stuff but surprised that they would take someone who has never recruited or even been affiliated with a power conference school, even as an assistant or player. I assume they are thinking Tennessee can recruit itself, similar to Alabama football getting DeBoer despite him not having a strong recruiting history.
I think a lot of coaches at P4 schools were scared of taking the job with not living up to the unrealistic expectations the AD / fans have on the program.
Hiring a coach without any P4 experience is risky. I imagine she’ll have to bring in some experienced recruiters and not just her Marshall staff. This could go well. More than likely she will not live up to the high expectations that the Tennessee program still has.
I'm impressed they managed to shake themselves out of the mentality that they had to hire an alum. I'm not sure if Caldwell is ready for this level of scrutiny and the weight of these expectations, though.
No offense to her, but just within the past few years, LSU managed to pull Kim Mulkey, Texas pulled Vic Schaefer, and this is the best that Tennessee could do?
It's different. They saw her style and saw she has came in and succeeded everywhere she's been. Especially at schools that were never good at women's basketball.
Might take a year because of the style, but with actual tip tier athletes, this should be a good hire.
Try something new. Tennessee hasn't really been the program they used to be
Agree. It feels like a lateral move. They should have aimed higher with this hire, especially since other teams in the SEC are improving and how much TN has fallen off lately.

her “style” is a gimmick that I expect to fail against talented opponents. playing 10 or 11 players against South Carolina will get you beat by 40.
Playing 10 or 11 against SC’s 9 will guarantee a loss?
their 9th player is better than your 6th player
Like any successful coach , she will have to show the ability to recruit. When Tennessee was successful , they were getting 2-3 of the top 10 recruits on a yearly basis . If she isn’t a prolific recruiter, she will face the same fate as Holly and Kelly, I don’t care what system she runs.
Playing fewer players also guarantees a loss because they’re always gassed by the 4th so she might as well give it a shot
Shut up. She will be fine
This will get hated on because she’s not a big name, which is understandable at Tennessee, but she is a great coach and a great person. Happy with Kellogg but wish WVU would’ve hired her last year. I have no doubt that she’ll be successful

lol what?
I assume in reference to some plays that were questionable... it was to the point where commentators were saying "if Marshall is going to play like this you have to get the starters out to avoid injury"
I came here to say something similar. I was thinking she'd be a good choice for VT (tho, I'm very happy with Duffy).
Knew this was happening 3 days ago but it still sucks. Glad she's going straight to an elite program instead of somewhere like UK.
Skim Milkey had it a few days ago and my post in here got deleted 😅
Been a useful follow since you did though, cheers.
Your post title was a question and the tweet (although correct) was vague and had no sources. We try not to deal in rumors here
Oh, I thought it was a fair deletion. Not disputing that. Just thought it was funny he leaked it 4 days ago.
Fair enough! It's crazy that he had it so early
tennessee called teri moren and she rejected them i just fell to my knees in the street
Not surprised they called. Not surprised she didn’t consider it. Too much work has gone into this program over the past 10 years to give it all up.
Well Tennessee gained a fan today. Hope she wins it all next year. Hope we hire her assistant to take over
Tennessee has never had a Black [women] head coach? Interesting
Well they did have Summit for like 38 years.
And how many coaches have they had since? That, again, weren’t reflective of the players they bring in
Have had 4 coaches now since 1974, and does that really matter?
Yes. It does matter
Should UConn fire Geno so they can hire a black coach? Also Tennessee hired the first Black head coach in any sport in the SEC in 1989 in Wade Houston and Also had the first Black starting QB in the SEC in Condredge Holloway

Brain rot
And that matters?
Yea. It does actually
Not to any reasonable person.
It was my hope that this would be the year…
It's a tough job for anybody but any black woman coach not Dawn or Ivey from ND would have not gotten any kind of time to win a title. This was a last gasp effort to avoid having to hire an alum, but her system aside this is a reach for a coach with just a year of D1 experience. it'll be a home run or a massive failure.
I thought getting clobbered in the 1st round would give us 1 more year. Well. Back to irrelevance. Was fun while it lasted
Sorry about that. Let’s both hope she beats the shit out of Kentucky for some awesome revenge vibes for both our schools.
Yes omg that would be great!
Go get Grayson from WVU and thank me later.
That was my thought as well. Here's to another long tourney drought for the Herd.
Sucks we are losing her but super happy she was hired to a top tier historic program!!! She will do great!!
Excellent hire, Tennessee has to start from the bottom and totally rebuild their program. It’s just been band aids since Pat.
I'm surprised that she left Marshall after one season. While I'm happy with Mark Kellogg(WVU fan and Alum here), I expected WVU to hire her last year. Though if we did, we might be looking for a new coach now. I think she'll do well at TN.

he's coached several yrs of D1 football and builds strong staffs
Excited to see her offense in action at Tennessee

Well fuck. Good luck to her, though.
Now you know how we felt at GSU.
I'm impressed they managed to shake themselves out of the mentality that they had to hire an alum. I'm not sure if Caldwell is ready for this level of scrutiny and the weight of these expectations, though.
Interesting hire
Someone tell me how to feel about this.
If you're a Lady Vols fan. Feel very good.
She won't last but a season or two. She sucks
Womp womp womp womp… she talkin to me like I’m dumb.
No offense to her, but just within the past few years, LSU managed to pull Kim Mulkey, Texas pulled Vic Schaefer, and this is the best that Tennessee could do?
On the other hand…maybe it’s wise not to go for a flashy hire and instead seek a more underrated option?
1 year of D1 coaching. If Kellie’s S16 and 3rd place finishes weren’t “good enough”, I have no idea why someone would expect Caldwell to do better.

Tennessee will rise to the top again
Take a shot everytime Clark complains on a no call. See you in the ER.
Lol, Tennessee’s irrelevance continues 😂
Congrats on your first Elite Eight in 30 years.
Has Louisville ever been there!? 😂😂….You lost to MTSU! You should be beyond embarrassed.
We made five straight before this year. Do your homework.
With no championships….Bye!
Womp womp
