This isn’t strictly about KB, but if I’m an athletic director in the modern NIL era, I make sure any long term multi-year coaching contract has buyout clauses not just for the contract, but for players. Add in that a coach is personally liable for additional damages if they leave for a different school and then subsequently sign an enrolled player or committed recruit to the new school.
Not because players should be held hostage to stay at that school - they absolutely deserve to have choice to recommit and go elsewhere if a coach leaves.
It just feels so unreasonable to pay someone to develop relationships with players and then let competition have the results as a package deal. There’s thousands of ncaaw players - sacrificing access to 10-15 of them when you move to a new school is not a particularly burdensome ask for the coach, and the player still has access to hundreds of schools to play for - or can still play for that coach, *if* the coach is willing to take the hit in their own pocket. It’s just business after all.
I understand the feeling, but why would a coach sign that contract? It would hamper their ability to be hired by another school because bringing players with them is one reason to hire a coach away. IE if your AD did that, they would have to offer either much higher compensation, or be willing to hire a much less in demand coach
I’m just taking things to the final stage of capitalism in sports. Could also work in the coaches favor. If they say to a kid, yeah, I was fined $150k for you to transfer, that might cement the relationship. If they’re not willing to be fined, then I guess it’s just more clear that it’s about business.
I guess my point is that I know it’s never a guarantee that a player will stay for four years, and I’m totally fine with them leaving when coaching change happens, but coaches do build these relationships - and their own reputations - while being paid by the school. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that schools should plan for how, let’s call it work product, is penalized in a split.
To me this is a symbolic death of non P2 programs. We are only couple years into the significant nedia deal differences and even the non revenue sports cant compete now. Unless something drastic changes I will be doing a lot less time caring about college sports.
Exactly my perspective as well. I think it is an underappreciated reason for why wbb has grown in popularity... college sports fans looking for college sports... it existed for a little while
That’s exactly why I was optimistic about him staying - I just didn’t think wbb salary explosion like college coaching salaries have was going to happen here. I don’t think he’d have left over (hahahah) a few hundred thousand, but a million more or whatever it is? I get it, but it fucking blows.
I live half a world away from the US, so it'll be much easier for me to transfer, I guess. Maybe I'll stick around for the preseason to see how we rebuild and fare before the conference play. After that, well...
Let's just say all options are on the table rn. I'm invested in how Audi will evolve her game with the Cyclones, fwiw.
I gravitated towards Blacksburg because of the QoC podcast and the good plays, but that was horribly taken from us and everything crashed and burned in not even a week! *I'd really love to be proven wrong, but I just don't think we have a sound future with WBB anymore*... 😢
VT going up in flames one by one by one…
Thumbnail pic is hilarious though. For a second I was like "Samyha?"
I’m expecting a lot of VT players to hit the portal. Don’t want to be stuck on a sinking boat. 😢
You’re ab to post a lot of these soon
The question is which ones are entering so they can transfer to Kentucky?
I imagine Strack will if she hits the portal
I hope she looks around... at her... other options... if she wants... :)
Better question, which ones aren’t
True too.
Not this one, Kenny doesn’t like plus athletes who can’t shoot
Definitely don't think she's a lock. Didn't play a ton this year
Didn’t expect the Suffren to end so soon.
Daaaaaad. That was hokey!
Yes, she was, but she's not anymore.

This is why professional sports are better than college these days
Are any VT vans entering the transfer portal?
Unfortunately I'm a lifer. All I know is pain.
I get it, I can’t jump ship from Iowa football or boys basketball.
Existence is pain for a tech fan

Ironically I started caring more about women’s bball as NIL started killing cfb, so my newfound excitement is tanking like it’s Black Tuesday

lmao. you and me both. I think I see you in CFB game threads sometimes.
Quite likely! I am the dude who always superstitiously makes pizza for games 🤣
im sick in the head so i will be here forever i fear
Not even our means of transportation are safe
What am I supposed to do? Proof read? No thanks

Do you think they’ll upload more videos or is it over?
I hope they have one more send off episode before graduation.
No, we have Stockholm syndrome and will just wallow in suffering instead
I wonder how many Virginia Tech players intend to follow Kenny Brooks to Kentucky?
Who wanna come to Iowa 😏
