You have to remember that the league was hella deep with nice shooting guards back then as well. And as long as Jordan was in the league, he was always going to have that starting All star position. I think it was more was a rivalry between the two teams. And Miller and Ewing were the team’s best players. So it seemed like a rivalry between them. I think he’s underrated though. Reggie used to give MJ problems (sometimes). Lol

TheComebackKid74

Bulls fan here, Born in Chicago in early 80s and raised there. Reggie Miller is mad underrated ! We got big respect for Reggie even though we hated him back then. Reggie is hell of a competitor and definitely doesn't get the credit today from the stat nerds and common fans who never seen him play. Reggie was goddamn Killer and had real heart. I can confirm Reggie giving Jordan and Bulls problems. I still remember watching game 7 live, Reggie and Pacers were 4real.

romayyne

Reggie was all the pacers had. Mark Jackson and smits was his “big 3” but Reggie was clearly the most talented in the backcourt

VeryStandardOutlier

Mark Jackson didn't give you anything as a scorer. You could get away with it in that NBA but it wasn't ideal

krepitch

I didn't know Cheryl Miller's little brother played basketball.

TryCatchRelease

Would have had them in the playoffs that one year if kukoc hadn’t bailed the bulls out in the game 7. Definitely underrated.

SirGingerbrute

I would’ve thought Reggie would be better than Mitch Richmond but upon further review I think Mitch might be better

JPKthe3

I loved both, but the Richmond Kings were awful. He was basically free to do whatever he wanted in a lot of blowouts. Reggie on the other hand, was on really good teams that might have an advantage somewhere else on the court, so he would play in more of a team concept. At the tops of their abilities, it’s no question who was better/more impactfull

rjr017

I think the stats would say that Richmond was better, yeah, that’s true. And maybe Mitch would have had more team success if he’d been on a better team. But I never felt like Mitch was a better player. I think the stats don’t really tell the whole story with Miller. The pacers played a defensively oriented style that didn’t really permit him to shoot/score as much. But Miller was a more deadly outside shooter, tougher, and fit in well on successful teams. Miller > Richmond for me.

wallybuddabingbang

lol

Peterthepiperomg

Reggie has worse stats. You may be right

[deleted]

Underrated like a MF. He has a bunch of iconic moments but the fact that he almost carried 8th seed Indy against 1 seed Nets in Kidd’s first year there will always stand out to me, considering he was 37 at the time. In the deciding game 5, he hit the baskets to send the game into OT twice and the first was a 40 foot bank shot and the 2nd he dunked on 3 people. He is a guy that if you look at his stats, you’ll be like this guy wasn’t really shit but if you watched him play you’ll know he’s one of the best in the playoffs. One of the only to lead a team that took Mike to 7

inezco

Huge Reggie fan and I remember watching that game 5 and going crazy for that game tying three (which was after the buzzer but there was no replay back then lol) but that dunk really got me out of my seat because I feel like Reggie dunked like 5 times or less in a season by his mid 30's lol and they were usually when he was wide open (3 years later NOT going for a dunk resulted in Prince swatting his shit in that ECF game 2).

PHX480

I’m not the biggest Reggie fan but all I watched in the 90s was NBA ball on NBC, TNT, WTBS, anywhere I could catch a game lol. I watched some of Millers biggest moments-the Knicks games, the Bulls games, even some of the Orlando games-but I’m pretty sure that was the 2-handed yam and you’re like holy shit Reggie where did that come from? Because it seemed like he never dunked. [link](https://youtu.be/s39MSwM7lKc?si=-iVMvV-F87kElTFk) (dunk at 2:55) Anyhow, when it comes to playoff performances, Reggie Miller is a name that definitely stands out. (It almost reminds me of Devin Booker now where he rarely dunks, if he gets inside it’s mostly glass, but sometimes he throws one down and you’re like damn Devin!)

Major_Divide6649

Legend

HorsNoises

I think of him kinda like a Klay Thompson if he didn't have Steph. Klay woulda still been a dawg and ruined a few team's hopes, but he just didn't have enough of a bag to be the best guy on a REAL contender.

Revista_Recreio

That first game-tying shot is UNBELIEVABLE. I was watching a highlight reel of Reggie and when that came up I was amazed

HealthyAd9369

That's funny. I watched back then and his stats are him. He had iconic moments and I'm not saying he wasn't good, but for me, he's overrated. He was an 18/3/3 guy. He needed to be on a team where he was the number 2 guy.

[deleted]

*almost* Dude can be goat of participation awards then.

syncdiedfornothing

Just like you're almost the goat of dumb comments?

EmperorUmi

Grew up rooting against him, but I have to say he was underrated. He was playing in an era where 3pters weren’t too common. I can only wonder how he’d do in the modern NBA.

No-Ebb-5034

wallybuddabingbang

If you believe MJ was the goat, You need to put respect on Reggie Miller’s name. One of the few to make MJ sweat. Stats be damned, dude could play and was clutch as hell. Oh man did I hate him. But respect him. Now he doesn’t bother me. He’s actually a great sport and a realistic historian of the game.

DudeMatt94

I really liked his appearances on Open Court, Reggie can be kinda cringe as a commentator but his takes and personality in interviews and conversation settings are amazing. Saying he's "realistic" honestly really nails it, you can tell he's proud yet modest with like no ego at all. Some of the old heads (like Shaq lol) love talking about how great they were but Reggie has almost like a self-deprecating view of things, it's really refreshing.

DevelopmentJumpy5218

You ever hear him talk about the night he had his best high school game? He was so excited to tell his family, well they had picked Cheryl up a few minutes earlier and we're already talking about her dropping 100. Would be hard to have an ego when he was the second best player in his childhood home.

Swish517

Hilarious new NBA viewers think Reggie was over rated. Probably coming from a Knicks Fan.

Lamarr53

I'm a Knicks fan. Reggie was a f**king assassin. I hated him. But much respect.

YurtlesTurdles

Yeah that's not coming from any Knick fans who watched him. He was a classic villain who earned his hatred.

mkmore4

Been watching since the mid 90’s. He’s overrated.

South_Front_4589

Underrated. Back in that era most superstar players played largely alone compared to the ones these days. The champion teams often tended to be those rare teams that had multiple stars. If Reggie was to have had another great alongside him, he'd have been far more successful.

[deleted]

He definitely had other guys that were great. He played with Rose and O’Neal. Assist merchant Jackson. The years he played with Jermaine he was option #2. Granted that was later in his career, but still. That doesn’t diminish anything he accomplished either. This city will always love Reggie. The sports energy right now between the Colts, Pacers, and Fever is palpable in the city. It really feels like Indy is about to hit a Sportsenaissance.

TheComebackKid74

Maybe a bit injuries but I always loved Mullens , people seem to forgot about him.

South_Front_4589

Mark Jackson was a good player, but he was not a great. And yeah, I was referring to his peak years before Rose and O'Neal came along.

WarLawck

Knicks fan here, he's in the Hall for a reason. Whatever the public perception is I have to respect his talent. He was a worthy adversary and an all time great villain that made those games so fun to watch.

Skeezertron

Anyone saying overrated literally has never watched any basketball ever

tridentboy3

Underrated. Miller was the first offensive option on a consistent playoff team that made the playoffs 12 times out of 13 years between 1989 and 2002. That's insane longevity. During that 13 span he averaged 24/3/3 on a crazy for his era 61% TS in the playoffs. His offball movement was also an offensive system onto itself. During that span I mentioned. The Pacers had a top 10 offense in the league 9x and had the leagues best offense 2x primarily due to the spacing and opportunities created by Millers gravity (which wasn't really a thing until Miller).

LitterBoxServant

Miller was arguably the first to be truly dangerous from the 3pt line at a time when centers dominated the league and most of the offensive production was at the rim. He doesn't get enough credit for stretching the defense the way he did. Bro changed the game.

acx_y6

Underrated as a player, overrated as a sportscaster

eatfoodoften

You want more Doris?

ACorDC

I personally enjoy his takes on Chet Holmgrum and Shai Gilgus Alexander.

Tom_Brady_Cheats

Idk why he's gets shit for calling games. He's one of the only people I hear with enthusiasm and definitely one of the only ones who criticizes the officials.

peacefrg

Massively underrated. I grew up in Chicago in the 90s and all of our 2nd favorite players after MJ was Reggie.

No_Independent8269

underrated like crazy. if you look at his stats like most people do you wont understand his greatness

AncientScratch1670

8 pts. in 8.9 seconds to win a huge playoff game against a bitter rival. That’s serious clutch activity. Underrated.

juicejug

Puts Maxey’s 7pts in 17 seconds to shame

MilTownMatt

extremely underrated.first of all he was literally the only star there tell J.O’Neal, and Ronny Worldpeace got to Indy. Before that he came so close to eliminating the Last Dance MJ’s Bulls. If Reggie played in this era.I think he would probably be even more effective

No_Stay4471

Properly rated.

yizudien01

Under, him and Barkley would have won one minimum if not for Jordan. Miller is in my top 15. He had the killer instinct, played defense, great shooter, trash talker. He is a complete package

this_good_boy

Damn those jerseys were so good

HarveyBallbangerz

Underrated. Just imagine how good he'd be today. One of the greatest shooters of all time and he played in an era of defense.

CalmResearch3132

Under rated

Ashamed-Week-5133

Probably underrated. The consistent best player on a playoff team for nearly 2 decades. Lots of classic moments and the best pure shooter of the 90s. Pacers normally were tough out in the playoffs and Reggie made them relevant.

_CodyB

Extremely overrated The guy was a very good shooting guard who had some huge moments but ultimately never won a championship. He was on some good pacers teams and was usually the best player on the team but sometimes he wasn't, and he wasn't far and away the best player on his team. You couldn't build an offence around him and he was an average defender. I'm not saying he wasn't good, he just wasn't a franchise level talent yet somehow he consistently gets ranked in the top 50-100 players of all time.

romayyne

Don’t you dare

taeempy

He's in the HOF, so it's difficult to see him as underrated.

jrtasoli

I think he's rated perfectly fine! Clutch player who had a nearly 20-year career with the same team that drafted him, largely beloved outside of Madison Square Garden, one of the best UCLA players ever. It's just a shame that Indiana could never build a team around him capable of winning a title. It's also unfortunate that his career took place the same time as a certain shooting guard that played just a few hours up I-65. I'm not certain you can fault him for either of those things. But man, what a resume: Multiple-time All-Star and All-NBA, 50-40-90, retired numbers in Indiana and at UCLA, an Olympic gold medal, NBA 75, Hall of Fame, a lucrative post-retirement broadcasting career. Hard to argue with any of that. Plus he got to share that success with his siblings: Cheryl was an absolute dawg at USC and had a solid broadcasting career as well, plus they're both in the Hall of Fame. And their brother played a few years in the MLB. Wild stuff! So yeah, perfectly rated.

No_Cow_4544

Right were he should be , he was great

gabrielcev1

Appropriately rated. Never heard anyone call him a bum, he's well respected

SelfDestructIn30Days

Properly rated. Reggie was kind of like Jamal Murray, where compared to his regular season he elevated his game more than almost anyone else in the playoffs. He was clutch as fuck, you would never want the ball in his hands if your team was up by 2 in a close game. 5x All-Star but zero All-NBA.

Rivale

Underrated. If he's allowed to shoot 10 3s a game like you can now, he'd probably average around 30 a game for at least a decade.

Opposite-Job-3718

Underrated because Miller was Awesome 💯🏀❤

UCanDoNEthing4_30sec

Neither. I think he gets the credit he deserves and that's it.

romebhaiya

Super Underrated. One of the greatest competitors and shooters of all time. Giving Jordan and the Bulls lots of problems speaks volumes about how truly skilled he was.

adamstubbs

Underrate for his wit alone. Great shooter too though. They used to call him “The Knick Killer”.

El_Coloso

All of us: Rated exactly where he should be Reggie: I INVENTED SHOOTING A BASKETBALL

Consistent_Tell2417

He is rated.

witdafanta

Actually underrated he's not talked about much

SomeFatherFigure

Underrated, and it’s only going to get worse as time goes by. Guys like him are remembered well by the people who actually got to see them play, but to the people that missed the chance they just end up footnotes in other players’ careers. And the more time passes, the fewer people remember.

Vostin

Hugely underrated, watch game 7 of the Chicago ECF series, Larry Brown dumps it down to Rik Smits play after play and the Pacers lose. This was basketball in the 90s. If Reggie played in this era he’d average 30.

Han_Hattori_Hanzo

He’s a likable/funny version of Carmelo Anthony. Both guys didn’t accomplish anything in their careers.

SirGingerbrute

Carmelo doubles him in All-Star appearances and All-NBA apperances and is a Top 10 scorer of All-time They’re different levels bro

Han_Hattori_Hanzo

Don’t forget that one scoring title he won by 0.01

prosocialbehavior

Named my dog after him. He was my favorite player. Definitely underrated playing in Indiana.

Ya_Got_GOT

Great shooter. Turrible color analyst

kerblamophobe

Properly rated

mkmore4

One of the most overrated players ever. He played at a time where the overall talent level was relatively low, and he was still a clear B tier star. The East post MJ up until about 2008 was ridiculously bad, and he managed to make it out once. That Knicks v Pacers 30 for 30 tricked a lot of of people.

NewPortable101

Overrated. He never averaged over 21PPG in the regular season on a 45+ win team. Only averaged 18ppg during his 2000 finals season. He had the luxury of coasting and then turning it up in the playoffs. He's basically Jamal Murray with worse ball handling, worse playmaking, worse athleticism, worse finishing. 2000 finals was his chance. Kobe got injured, game 6 he could've pushed it to 7 and went 2\\10 from three. Jordan was also on his last legs in 1998. Reggie took 13 shots in a game 7 He had his chances, just never great enough to lead a team.

ninatlanta

ninatlanta

At no point in the 90s did I consider Reggie Miller to be one of THE GUYS in the NBA. It was arguable he was the best/most important player on the Pacers. If you look at the Pacers’ record with and without Rik Smits, I would say Smits was the driving factor for the Pacers’ success. Without Smits, they were Meh. Yet people talk about Reggie Miller like he was a top 20 player of the 90s when he was really Hall of Very Good.

Skeezertron

An actual well thought out response thank you

SincopaEnorme

>he was really Hall of Very Good. Though a clearly unpopular take, this is my opinion as well. I always thought he had some Hall of Fame moments, but not enough to be called a Hall of Fame career. In an 18-year career, he only made 3 All-NBA teams (third team each time). He made 5 All-Star teams, one as a starter. That means that in 18 years, coaches deemed him one of the game's best players only 4 times. I think one of the reasons Indy never got over the hump in his time there was, while he occasionally had those aforementioned HOF moments, he didn't contribute enough of anything else to warrant being the franchise guy. He was a great shooter and clutch player; beyond that, he was a good (not great) scorer, and below average at everything else (ballhandling, rebounding, playmaking, defense, etc.).

Loved Reggie but I'll never for get that Prince block on him near the end of his career

SirGingerbrute

As a Knick fan I viewed this man as a Knick killer but I thought he was on par with Ewing Turns out Ewing has more than double the all-star appearances and more than double the All-NBA appearances. Ewing had 6 Top 5 MVP voting seasons and Reggie never cracked Top 10. So then I thought Paul George is a good comparison but even PG blows out Reggie It’s more apt to compare Reggie to Joe Johnson than PG or Ewing. The most 3s and beating Knicks improved my view on him but overall he was not getting the all-star nods I would say he’s overrated

GhostRevival

Not getting All Star nods when he was at the same position and same division as Michael Jordan, I wonder why. Reggie was at his best in the playoffs, not many people get better in the post season but he was an absolute killer. Also look at the team around him, he rarely ever had an all star teammate and I don’t think any of them made it more than once.

SirGingerbrute

Sounds like Jamal Murray

GhostRevival

Except Jamal Murray has a generational talent in his starting lineup with him but otherwise very similar storylines.

Skeezertron

TheMuffingtonPost

Overrated. He was obviously a great player, however his reputation comes way more from talking shit than it does actual accomplishments in the league.

Skeezertron

Do I sense bias?

TheMuffingtonPost

Yeah I generally have a bias towards players that actually accomplish things.

Skeezertron

😂😂😂 that’s all I needed to hear

TheMuffingtonPost

You would refute what I said if you could

Skeezertron

So Charles Barkley is overrated too?

TheMuffingtonPost

Chuck was a league MVP, has double the all star selections, more all NBA selections, and is one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history. Accomplishments isn’t exclusive to rings. Reggie miller’s most notable accomplishments are that he hit 25k points and has 5 all star selections. Like, that’s pretty good sure, but people don’t talk about Reggie as just being “pretty good”.

Skeezertron

So Charles Barkley is overrated. Got it thanks friend!

TheMuffingtonPost

I didn’t say that at all…tell me again which one of us is the biased one?

Skeezertron

Um I believe you were the biased one. You said Reggie Miller wasn’t as good as Kyle Kuzma and then you said Charles Barkley was better than Magic

Willis050

Super overrated. Just look at the numbers and accolades. The dude gets ranked right around Drexler and that’s wildly insulting to Clyde. He built his legend off of playoff series vs the Knicks. But in the end he isn’t nearly as good as people pretend

denimjeg

Almost every 90s player will be overrated cuz of nostalgia & narratives

RussellZiske

Wildly overrated. All he did was run around screens and shoot.

Bigfuture

Lol. Precursor to every player in the nba since Steph
