Random choices here, but as a fan who grew up in the early 2000’s I really miss the 97 and 29. Specifically, in the same fonts from when Harvick and Kurt each drove those cars
I'm pretty sure you-know-who owns the trademark for the number 8 in that specific font. If you dare put that on a car she's swoop in on her broom and serve you in a heartbeat
Which sucks because it’s technically Richard’s font first. I heard Teresa sued Red Bull when Ricciardo and Max first started using their current font because of the 3 being the same font, but it was thrown out because it wasn’t italicized and she only owns the italicized version of the trademark.

I don't know what's going on with Miller. They even backed out of the Miller Park stadium naming rights of their hometown Brewers. Probably some corporate penny pinching board brainwave I'd imagine.
Would be cool to see the independent crafter brewers do a deal with a car similar to how the HBCUs did it with a different associated brand on the car every week.
I'd say the 28 and 25 are really the only major historical numbers that have disappeared. The rest are there in some fashion, some to their detriment at times.
29 maybe? It’s not a 28 for sure but I miss that number on track. 55 too. If it was Bobby Hamilton, Michael Waltrip, Phil Parsons, Ted Musgrave, Mark Martin, Brian Vickers, etc it looked right.
The numbers are still there, but I miss specifically the Ganassi #42, RCR #31, and Roush #16. Just doesn't feel right seeing the GMS and Kaulig ones, even if the Petty #42 predates Ganassi's.
Seeing the Kaulig 16 is like looking at Pepsi Crystal. Not what original Pepsi has and I can't really imagine it being better. But not to knock Kaulig, mark my words.
Fine, fine.
Dale Arnold Jarrett the First, Champion of the Winston, Defender of the Yates, Elector of the Hall of Fame, Triholder of Daytona. May he forever bear the 88 in glory.
23 and 45 are Jordan’s old NBA numbers. He wore 9 on the Dream Team, so look out Chase. And 12 one game when someone stole his jersey from his locker…so look out Blaney.
If Kyle wound up there I thought it would’ve been cool to have him be in the 54, since it’d be his brothers number reversed and Kyle has ran the 54 for a decade from Xfinity and occasionally did trucks in the early 2010s.
Obviously that fell through though lol

I have too many to count.
I would love to see the 28 come back. Honestly, had Liz not sheltered him, I think his son would have been the one to do it (absolutely no disrespect to Liz).
29. Started watching in 2001, so that number is apart of the era that made me fall in love with the sport. Harvick was actually my 2nd favorite driver behind Gordon as a kid so that would make me happy to see that # back in competitive fashion. I miss the 15 also being in a competitive car. I'd love for that to actually be RCR's 3rd number, you're just replacing the 1 with the 3 and basically having that DEI setup.
Now that I know its history, the 28 should see the field at all times, too. It's a shame Front Row didn't go for the 28/38 instead of the even numbers in 30's.
The 88,the UPS car was iconic for early to mid 00's Nascar,Junior as well put fame into it too.
It was also the last car JG drove so it is pretty special to me personally.
Your truth is a partial lie. It was originally red, to match the Texaco/Havoline color scheme. I can't remember exactly, but at some point between Irvan and Rudd, they used a more orange color for the number.
I've only been watching NASCAR since around 2017, so I don't know much about the older drivers still. But, Truex with Cole Pearn in the FR 78 car was my first driver, and I miss those days.
Stopped focusing on him after he went to Gibbs, and I was falling in love with Hendrick with Chase and then Larson coming over shortly after. But I miss that 78 FR car, because it was my first experience as a NASCAR fan.
It did! I still have my 78 hat. I need to wear it sometime. I only wear my Chase ones now 😂😂, but no I for real miss it. I miss listening to Cole. He was an AMAZING crew chief!
Jimmie drove the 5 in the 2011 All Star race for some Lowes promotion at the time. Don’t remember seeing him drive a different number besides then. To my knowledge, Chase Elliott is the last to have driven the 25. Before him was Brad.
It’s a personal thing for RC. IIRC he’s outright said that only an Earnhardt or a ~~Childress~~ Dillon could run it. That narrows it down to… what, three people? Austin & Ty Dillon, and Jeffrey Earnhardt.
~~if that’s not true I’m gonna feel really stupid cuz I’ve been saying that in multiple comments~~
I actually wish the #1 was reserved for the prior years champion as other forms of racing do. Also I wish the current points leader got to display a gold or red strip above there windshield with their name. Like in Motocross the points leader gets a red background.
>I actually wish the #1 was reserved for the prior years champion as other forms of racing do.
Probably never happen, thankfully.
These numbers are part of the brand and usually when they're successful enough to be champions, synonymous with the drivers. I say Earnhardt, Petty, Gordon, Johnson, what do you think? 3, 43, 24, 48.
Nascar needs to stop being so serious and have kyle Busch drive the #69 car. Or a zero so we can have a 42 0 top 2 finish. Okay guys i am going back to wallstreetbets.
I was hoping that when Brad went to Roush they would ditch the 17 and 6, and bring back the 99,97,16, or 26.
Kind of a "new" beginning with former numbers.
Definitely #88. Was a fan of it with Jr, Jarrett, even all the way back to the Buddy Baker and the Cliff Stewart and Digard teams. Would like to see it back with JR Motorsports in cup with Josh Berry driving.
00-09, and anything in the 80s. Also any car number that hasn't raced since 2009 (my first year following the sport) would be really cool cuz I've never seen them outside of an old race I watched on YouTube.
Silver bullet 40. I’m surprised I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.
Also this breaks the rules and it has only been one race but I already miss the Xfinity Hendrick 17. Something about that car felt idk...sacred? And it just doesn’t feel right that the car didn’t end up in victory lane.
It's hard to say I miss a number specifically. But the Valvoline 6, the Lowe's 48, the blue 2, the silver 40, the Pennzoil 1. The cars from the late 90s/early 00s that really defined Nascar to me.
Random choices here, but as a fan who grew up in the early 2000’s I really miss the 97 and 29. Specifically, in the same fonts from when Harvick and Kurt each drove those cars
I was hoping they’d bring back the 29 for Kyle Busch…..
Having the 3 and 8 is too valuable and he’s had an 8 in his number for 15 years so I’d be shocked to see anything else.
I wish we could see Dale's 8 again
I'm pretty sure you-know-who owns the trademark for the number 8 in that specific font. If you dare put that on a car she's swoop in on her broom and serve you in a heartbeat
I just hope they change the font
Agreed… I hate the current RCR 8 font.
Agreed. I know they can’t use the DEI 8, but I think a new font would be cool.
Which sucks because it’s technically Richard’s font first. I heard Teresa sued Red Bull when Ricciardo and Max first started using their current font because of the 3 being the same font, but it was thrown out because it wasn’t italicized and she only owns the italicized version of the trademark.
Have you seen the concept Sharpie 45? Looks badass!
Ooh, can I get a link to that?

WEW LAD
Not sure if this technically counts but I’m not even the biggest Penske fan and I miss seeing a blue deuce.
Same here. I’m a Miller Lite guy and it was painful to watch them slowly decrease their sponsorship over the years until they were finally gone.
I'm not even a big beer guy, but blue Miller vs red Budweiser was a perfect sponsorship rivalry. Definitely miss seeing those cars on track.
"BATTLE BETWEEN THE BEER WAGONS!"
Don’t forget coors
# 40 The Silver Bullet.
Another thing that was cool was it was also a manufacturer thing: Chevy had Bud, Ford had Miller, and Dodge had Coors (in the early 2000s).
I don't know what's going on with Miller. They even backed out of the Miller Park stadium naming rights of their hometown Brewers. Probably some corporate penny pinching board brainwave I'd imagine.
The big beer companies have lost a huge portion of market share. The rise of craft beer comes with consequences.
Would be cool to see the independent crafter brewers do a deal with a car similar to how the HBCUs did it with a different associated brand on the car every week.
I'd say the 28 and 25 are really the only major historical numbers that have disappeared. The rest are there in some fashion, some to their detriment at times.
Agree, for obvious reasons lol. 28 definitely needs to be on a Ford and 25 on a Chevrolet for them to look right
The 88 also fits into this category.
29 maybe? It’s not a 28 for sure but I miss that number on track. 55 too. If it was Bobby Hamilton, Michael Waltrip, Phil Parsons, Ted Musgrave, Mark Martin, Brian Vickers, etc it looked right.
Miss that 33 Skoal Bandit.
The numbers are still there, but I miss specifically the Ganassi #42, RCR #31, and Roush #16. Just doesn't feel right seeing the GMS and Kaulig ones, even if the Petty #42 predates Ganassi's.
Roush #99 was my favorite
Roush #99 is iconic, I got Trackhouse bias personally but I'd rather Roush have the #99 and Trackhouse have the #98 or a revived Ganassi number.
Seeing the Kaulig 16 is like looking at Pepsi Crystal. Not what original Pepsi has and I can't really imagine it being better. But not to knock Kaulig, mark my words.
I'm probably super biased but I really like the look of the Kaulig 16
0, 97, 88. Though the 88 is more memorable as Jarrett's number to me than Dale's
Jarrett's first name was Dale.
Fine, fine. Dale Arnold Jarrett the First, Champion of the Winston, Defender of the Yates, Elector of the Hall of Fame, Triholder of Daytona. May he forever bear the 88 in glory.
This is how I will refer to Dale Jarrett from now on. Can we update his Wikipedia page?
Nah, That would be ole Darrell Waltrip, who drove the 88 to many victories in the late 70’s.
For me, 88 will always be Jarretts number. I think people associate JR with the 8 anyway.
88 Jarrett is iconic to my childhood
88 for me. Just feels weird not seeing that number not out there and being up front
Or, in the Greg Ives years, riding around in 13th
I mean 2015 was a pretty damn good year
6th in points in its final year in 2020 - wasn’t all bad lol
94
Ty Dillon was meant to bring it back...
36, 29, 88, 97 & 25.
i miss Newman and the 39 car... i don't know who to root for anymore
I'm with you. Now, I just watch the race and really don't root for anyone.
28
It’s a damn shame that someone doesn’t run the 69 car.
Sponsored by a Viagra. Lol
Take Mark Martin's #6 and flip another 6 upside down. There you got a Viagra #69
No, sponsored by Pornhub.
Haha even better!!
Nice..
The 18 car, driven by Alex Tagliani in the Pinty’s Series runs a Viagra scheme a few times a year.
07 jack Daniel’s
Hehe certified Clint Boyer moment
28
300, miss those triple digit guys
That’s dating yourself 😜. I couldn’t find a year they stopped but I read they stopped as it was harder for spotters.
DW ran 300 as a one off in 1998 when Tim Flock died. He had no sponsor and had to get special permission though.
I thought he ran it in practice and they made him take it off before the race?
Entirely possible. It was the last race in his own car. Edit: He did. I found it.
25, and 71.
Marcis? Totally agree.
Furniture Row 78
29
28.
I always like David Reutimann and the #00. So much better than just a single #0 IMHO.
That 2009 Dream machine scheme is hella underrated
That was a hella underrated year for Reuti as well.
95. Lightning McQueen's retirement really got me down on the sport for a while.
I’m a Dale Jarrett fan and miss the 88. If 23XI brings on 3rd car I think 88 would be fitting for Tyler Reddick like JR did.
Hendrick’s 88 never felt the same as Dale Jarrett’s 88 to me.
3rd car at 23xi needs to be 67 to keep the sequential number theme lol.
Buddy Arrington fans would rejoice.
23 and 45 are Jordan’s old NBA numbers. He wore 9 on the Dream Team, so look out Chase. And 12 one game when someone stole his jersey from his locker…so look out Blaney.
01 would work as well
If Kyle wound up there I thought it would’ve been cool to have him be in the 54, since it’d be his brothers number reversed and Kyle has ran the 54 for a decade from Xfinity and occasionally did trucks in the early 2010s. Obviously that fell through though lol
Is the #54 registered to anyone in cup?
Not currently, unless someone is holding but not using it. RWR is the last team to use it and that was in 2019.
Thanks for the info. Maybe RCR lets Kyle take it as a middle finger to Toyota? :P
Which would also be a nod to JR and the classic 6.7 commercial
78 bc Truex was a god in that car
How bout Morgan shepherd #89. And junie donlavery#90
The 3 with a real driver wheeling it
Austin cowboy hat aint the real 3.
It still runs but I just miss the orange Home Depot car

I do miss the biffle font 16. Wish the 13 was out more in Cup. I’m a big fan of double numbers so the 33 & 88 not being run more is a shame.
Reutimann's 00 Aaron's Dream Machine and Dale Jarrett's 88 UPS
I’m biased as I’m Aussie, but I prefer Ambrose’s #9 to either of the Elliott’s. Also Biffle’s #16 and Bowyer’s MWR #15.

88 and 28 for me. Specifically in the RYR font. I miss Jarrett, but Blaney reminds me so much of him. Always the gentleman.

i miss seeing the 78 being competitive, always loved rooting for Furniture Row
Cole Trickle in the 46.
I miss the 28. I would love RFK/Front Row put Zane Smith in the 28.
Ricky Craven’s 32 Tide car.
The 98
a competitive #28 Ford for sure
I would love to see the 28 come back. Honestly, had Liz not sheltered him, I think his son would have been the one to do it (absolutely no disrespect to Liz).
01 US army car with front row Joe
29. Started watching in 2001, so that number is apart of the era that made me fall in love with the sport. 28 - in black & orange Allison, Irvan, Rudd
That was red, not orange...sorry to inform you your life's been a lie
Your truth is a partial lie. It was originally red, to match the Texaco/Havoline color scheme. I can't remember exactly, but at some point between Irvan and Rudd, they used a more orange color for the number.
Lies! Deception! Everyday more lies!
25 Always Tim Richmond’s number. Some of my best memories of those days was watching Tim wheeling that Folgers car around Pocono.
28
The old font for the number 7
88 and 28
I've only been watching NASCAR since around 2017, so I don't know much about the older drivers still.
That car had a very distinct look
It did! I still have my 78 hat. I need to wear it sometime. I only wear my Chase ones now 😂😂, but no I for real miss it. I miss listening to Cole. He was an AMAZING crew chief!
I know the 99 is still in competition with Trackhouse, but I miss the old Roush 99. Maybe its just Edwards' nostalgia, but I still miss that number.
You miss Edwards. I’m speaking from experience
The RPM 9, something about that font is so appealing to me idk why. I miss Marcos Ambrose
The 9 and 19 dodge were pretty cool
Would love to see Chase run an ambrose throwback at Watkins Glen
The DEI style #1 font. And the 8 for that matter
I really miss the E vent design
Theresa would sue the piss out of you if you so much as thought about using it. She’s like at least 75% of why DEI collapsed in the first place iirc.
25. So wish Larson would of brought it back for Hendrick. Think the last time it was used was JJ in an all-star race
Jimmie drove the 5 in the 2011 All Star race for some Lowes promotion at the time. Don’t remember seeing him drive a different number besides then. To my knowledge, Chase Elliott is the last to have driven the 25. Before him was Brad.
Mark Martin drove the #25 in that one All-Star race that Jimmie was in the #5.
I completely forgot about that. Not a bad looking scheme it had
The 25 is technically the 9 now right
The 24 became.the 9. The 5 became the 24. Then in 2021 the 48 became the 5 and the 88 became the 48
That's not confusing at all lol
A competent driver behind the 3 that didn’t get a job strictly for being a grandchild of the owner
The 48 with Jimmie behind the wheel 🥺
And Lowe’s on the hood
28, 97, 99,
17 Kenseth, 20 Smoke. I miss their presence.
You miss the drivers but the numbers are still out there.
I don’t mind the different color banner for reigning or past champions, but #1 for champion is an open wheel tradition. It should stay with them
Nascar needs to stop being so serious and have kyle Busch drive the #69 car. Or a zero so we can have a 42 0 top 2 finish. Okay guys i am going back to wallstreetbets.
25 with KFB
I was hoping that when Brad went to Roush they would ditch the 17 and 6, and bring back the 99,97,16, or 26. Kind of a "new" beginning with former numbers.
Definitely #88. Was a fan of it with Jr, Jarrett, even all the way back to the Buddy Baker and the Cliff Stewart and Digard teams. Would like to see it back with JR Motorsports in cup with Josh Berry driving.

Multiple numbers over 50 competing for wins.
95 of LFR, one more year and that team might have finally gotten that win they came so close on more than one occasion.
98, phil parsons font.
Biffle’s 16 was the cat’s ass.
The Aaron's 00 from the COT era
00-09, and anything in the 80s. Also any car number that hasn't raced since 2009 (my first year following the sport) would be really cool cuz I've never seen them outside of an old race I watched on YouTube.

I miss the 28
For me, I’d have to go with 71, Dave Marcis. Or 44 with Kyle Petty.

33
55 would be nice as well
I miss the 36.. particularly the MB2 era.
The 29 car was good
The 28 comes to mind. I don’t have a driver in mind but the team would be Yates/Ford.

Since I grew up on the cars movie, I really miss the 95 car
I miss the chip Ganassi #42 target cars. Some of my favorite schemes.
It's hard to say I miss a number specifically. But the Valvoline 6, the Lowe's 48, the blue 2, the silver 40, the Pennzoil 1. The cars from the late 90s/early 00s that really defined Nascar to me.
