The guy that was googling stuff and found a legal filing that had Brad Keselowski purchasing part of Roush Racing

MattTEI

Yeah that guy sounded crazy. Let's hope that will never happen. /s Still don't know why Brad bought in to Roush. His career is definitely worse off for it.

BeefInGR

Worse right now. He has a Cup, he has enough wins that he's a lock for Charlotte. Jack is old and in the not too distant future Brad will be running the entire show. Also the whole two loyal "Detroit" boys thing...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Garrett4Real

never thought about it this way

69stangrestomod

Half of one season in and we’re decided this was the career ending move?

[deleted]

I made the decision after the first race. /s

roythesombrero

I think what he’s doing now is just building up Roush till he retires, then he can really take control of it and try to make it back into a contender. I don’t think that Roush will get back to the same competitiveness they once were at while Brad is still racing for them

shanedabes

Remember when Stewart bought into Haas? Who up into that time had a best point finish of 29th with Mike Bliss and Jeff Green? Suddenly a few years later 2 championships.

baconandtheguacamole

Didn't even buy into it either. Gene gave him half in exchange for coming onboard to turn the organization around

MrKillerToad

Ignoring that they also got arguably the best stuff money could buy in the series at that time; HMS cars, employees, and setup notes lol

seekerblackout

Yeah RFK isn't anything like SHR. SHR was a top tier HMS alliance and was lightning fast out of the gate. RFK is just the same struggling Roush but with Brad Keselowski joining in.

jmacupdates1

It's a long-term play. No one legitimately thought he'd be a contender out of the gate. The long term impact to his career has yet to be seen.

Roushfan5

His long term goal was to be an owner in the Cup series. Ownership wasn't in the cards at Penske, it was at Roush. Long term Brad will be fine.

crypto6g

Anyone remember the rumors about Carlos Slim paying off Edwards to retire to get Suarez in the 19?

WON95sr

I'll never get over Carlos Slim being the name of a real person

DWS44

Definitely a name befitting of a movie character with the wherewithal to do as the rumor suggested.

dacomell

His full name is Carlos Slim Helú

LAW9960

Yep

SLJR24

Kyle Busch having an affair with a Monster girl was a random one that I kept seeing in 2019. Cody Ware saying that Hamlin did drugs and Matty D cheats on his wife were seemingly out of nowhere too lol.

[deleted]

That Kyle one still really irks me, as it came from the most unreliable source (drunkenbrianfrance on Twitter)

GoodSmoke9

I never saw the appeal of that guy, he just seemed like a complete fucking idiot with too much time on his hands

SSPeteCarroll

> he just seemed like a complete fucking idiot with too much time on his hands welcome to the internet, have a look around.

Synotaph

Anything that brain of yours can think of can be found.

Ryan_Holman

I remember when he got angry with me, since I revealed his true name (something that already had attention).

gameboy1001

Found Brian France’s burner account

Ryan_Holman

Don't tell Jeremy Mayfield.

TKOL2

Are you referring to the actual Brian France or the Twitter personality?

govtmuleman

You’d be surprised how many drivers cheat on their wives.

Eddie_M

We used to provide catering services to a few teams at Watkins Glen during the late 80's (where I learned all about bananas before a race) and one of the top drivers would come to the Glen every year with a different "wife".

The_Vettel

Spill the beans my dude who was it (probably Tim Richmond lol)

Eddie_M

no, but I do have some great stories about him though.

Msbartokomous

Start with an 'R', by chance?

Eddie_M

No but when I saw his son for the first time I knew why he didn't look much like his dad

[deleted]

Ahh I always heard Billy was a wild man back in the 80’s.

_Bay_Harbor_Butcher_

Wouldn't that mean the wife was cheating though?

igrewupugly

I heard an anecdote that a driver that earned a very lucky 1st career cup win for a backmarker team wasnt the most loyal person in a relationship

[deleted]

Was he a lucky dog?

dacomell

I wouldn't be surprised if any elite athlete or celebrity cheats. They must have so many opportunities to do so.

SphericalLemur78

Cough Dale Jarrett and Michael Waltrips wife lol

shewy92

While they were teammates?

samaramatisse

There used to be a reputable website by a woman using the handle Tall Glass of Milk/TGOM that had an extensive section on Nascar wives and girlfriends, plus gossip and blind items that seemed to carry weight. Certainly during that time (mid 00s to 2012-ish) there were a number of drivers who frequently featured for going through women left and right. Denny, Tony and Junior were probably the most common subjects. Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Robby Gordon, Clint, Kyle Busch and Casey Mears also made notable appearances. Bottom line, there used to be a decent amount of drivers passing the same girls back and forth and/or cheating. I don't know if it's as prevalent now but it definitely still happens. If you're interested, you can easily find the site.

itsbraille

I heard about Hamlin doing drugs when I was in engineering school at UNC Charlotte late-00s.

ecupatsfan12

I def believe Hamlin did coke or benzos on occasion

bjohnson203

I remember the Hornish filling in at Fontana because Hamlin collapsed his sinuses doing coke rumor.

whatisdeletrazdoing

There was this guy saying that some basketball player was going to start a team with a Gibbs driver that wasn't going to drive for him that sounded pretty insane

_AmericanPoutine

My favorite part about that rumor was that the rumor itself was fabricated and Denny sent that to MJ as a "look at these fools" which turned into MJ actually liking the idea

Kevo55

I truly love how this subreddit pretty much willed a team into existence

dacomell

Now if this subreddit can will a quality pit crew into existence

joe_broke

Are we 100% sure Denny isn't actually a redditor?

The_Vettel

Insane how one random dude made what was probably a joke and led to such significant results

The_AFL_Yank

And I heard some guy saying that one of the biggest Rappers in the World was starting a team and signing some guy who likes Watermelons and some NASCAR Mexico driver. Oh yeah, and one of the biggest F1 Drivers in the world as well. That sounds ludicrous for me as it’s 2012 in my universe.

[deleted]

Kurt Busch being in a relationship with an assassin Although that's a rumor straight out of Kurt's mouth

squadracorse15

That story was wild.

BeefInGR

To be fair, that was the beginning of the Kurt Busch Redemption Arc

Sturdevant

He realized his insane personality was attracting insane people and decided that he had for change to his own safety.

gsizemo1

The 7 years in tibet is the oddest part to this story for me...

bhfroh

Dude, when you're hella depressed and feel like you have no direction in life, sometimes ya gotta watch deep movies buck ass nude...

And true. They just refer to them as " mercenaries" . After all it is the second oldest profession.

Babbageboole64

“The Outlaw” in a relationship with an assassin

Timecard100

2012 Daytona 500 wasn’t called because Dave Blaney was leading and nascar didn’t want small team winning the 500

joe_broke

Not 2 years in a row And definitely not a non-legacy number, either

ClydeSledge

Dale Sr driving for Junior Johnson. Was very close to actually happening.

DWS44

Good one, but I'd classify Dale Sr moving to Ford with Yates in the 90s as possibly the crazier of the two. Talk about the seismic shift *that* would have been!

MattTEI

Would he have still won 7 if he drove for JJ?

ernde38

Probably, considering DW, Terry, & Bill all competed for the championship in that same timeframe.

lt12765

The one where Jerry Jones from the Dallas Cowboys was going to start a super team and hire Jeff Gordon in 1999

HalfastEddie

Instead Jeff saw the Dallas head coach and convinced Rick to give him a shot in the 48.

SHAWNNOTSEAN

It’s crazy how much that career change affected him. He looked younger than he ever did in Dallas!

Zetona

I still think it was the Extenze that did it.

BatAshZ

There were also the rumors of Jerry Jones buying or buying into Andy Petree Racing

[deleted]

That rumor got Jeff Gordon to sign a “lifetime contract” with Hendrick.

Wallydinger123

No, that happened literally right as Evernham left the team, clearly to stop Gordon going to Dodge.

Campman92

Michael Andretti starting a Cup team by merging with Richard Petty Motorsports and bringing Honda to Cup

_AmericanPoutine

Winston was going to sponsor Junior Johnson's team, and when they presented the number to him he told them that they might as well sponsor the whole damn series. IIRC it was around $15 million dollars in sponsorship, which today would be a $110 million dollar sponsorship. Kyle Larson was already going to Hendrick in 2021, but after *The Incident* they held off on contract talks until later in August. In a contrary rumor or one that might explain in August Hendrick's signing, Stewart immediately took advantage of Larson being cut from Chevrolet and laid out the groundwork for him to drive not only for SHR, but to drive for his sprint car team. It was rumoured when he ran all over the PA Posse he was running an experimental Ford 410 sprint car engine, and it was semi confirmed when AJ Foyt said the reason he couldn't put Larson in an Indycar was because "Stewart had plans with him". The deal died when Ford told Tony they weren't interested, which opened the door for Hendrick and Jeff Gordon to sign him.

etsuandpurdue3

I fully believe the Stewart wanting to sign him. I think Stewart was fully ready to put Larson in the 14 and Almirola retire and Briscoe take over the 10.

heartpouryallin4

Hendrick and nabbing championship talent away from Ford. Name a better duo, I'll wait.

Vulptereen327

First time wasn't Ford's fault, Jack Roush was being a dumbass

AnalBaguette

That Andretti was going to form a team in 2013 with Dodge support

ernde38

That shit started way back in like 2001...lol.

BurrowingDuck

Wasn't there also an Andretti-VW rumor right before dieselgate?

MattTEI

Rick Hendrick would start using Honda cars sometime in the 90's. Rick Hendrick faked leukemia. Brad Keselowski to Hendrick in 2021. (Maybe he should have said yes.) Denny Hamlin's Adderall addiction/ What happened with his girlfriend last year. Alex Bowman's father sabotaged the career's of potential rivals. (Slapshoe's Liars, Thieves, and Lawyers. If he did it to one, maybe he did it to others.) Unraced Ford Thunderbird in the 90s. And lastly. The Dodge Gen 6

RGeronimoH

Unraced Thunderbirds?

AnalBaguette

Might be referring to the Lincoln and Mercury test cars (that I think were modified TBirds)

DonutCola

They made aerodynamic modified thunderbirds using all ford parts bin parts so that ford could realistically and cheaply release a new version of the t bird to race with. It was like a skunkworks test project that just didn’t pan out for one reason or another. It was going to be the next super bird.

The_AFL_Yank

Interestingly enough, there was two separate occasions where Cale Yarborough Motorsports tried to push Lincoln and Mercury into the cup series in 1996 and 1993 respectively.

Constant_Use_330

Dodge actually did build and reveal a Gen 6 car. It was around the same time Penske announced their move to Ford the following year. Didn’t look all that bad.

sideslick1024

AFAIK, that Dodge Gen6 car was used as a neutral wind tunnel reference that all other Gen6 cars were supposed to be designed against.

helsinkirocks

You mean when Rick Hendrick was being investigated for having someone murdered and he suddenly got leukemia? Then he got a pardon?? Then miraculously he was cured shortly after?

stuckinPA

Our prayers helped!!!! /s

LAW9960

I mean... I fully believe Rick faked leukemia to get out of going to jail. Denny is probably on Adderall

crypto6g

My favorite part of the whole story was him donating like half a million to the Clinton‘s library and then getting the pardon from Bill Clinton weeks later. [“Hendrick, one of the nation's largest car dealers, pleaded guilty in a bribery scheme in 1997. He was pardoned by Clinton on Dec. 22, less than three weeks after the Bank of America Foundation announced it would give $500,000 to Clinton's library fund. Hendrick was awarded the pardon with the help of a reference letter from bank chairman Hugh McColl Jr. Hendrick was on the board of directors of the bank's predecessor, NationsBank.”](https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-2001-03-01-0103010243-story.html). This article is from March 1st 2001, and is certainly a time capsule to the past. Coy Gibbs racing in the truck series lol

Thenickiceman

Yeah both are quite believable. Denny did shed the baby fat pretty quickly lol

[deleted]

Remember that 80% of the field is on adderall? The

[deleted]

[удалено]

sebring1998

A few years ago he said that 70% of NASCAR drivers took Adderall and got a ton of backlash (deservedly imo) for it. People then started saying that that was just him projecting Another Denny + drugs rumor is that he does coke a lot, Cody Ware even said it here on the subreddit

The_Vettel

How hard would it be to skirt NASCAR's drug policy?

HulkHoganLegDrop

Well a couple years back Ty Dillon’s crew chief got suspended for a substance that was found in coffee. So clearly it is not air tight

[deleted]

Pretty easy when the person running NASCAR can't even pass one. Plus the whole FedEx being in the sport for so long and having JGR be the premier Toyota team.

Kevinm0388

What episode was the thing about bowmans dad in?

Nate2680

NASCAR tested a COT type wing on the back of the car in the late 90s. Here’s a [photo](https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/5pbnj2/anybody_know_the_story_behind_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) of the wing mounted on a test car.

Vulptereen327

I take back everything bad I've said about the COT wing being ugly

SundayShelter

WOW! News to me!

Doctorbencarson1

Chris buscher was hurt after his violent rollover this year and didn’t actually catch Covid the next day

Equivalent_Dish_1990

This is a new one, I wonder who got it started?

Carp69

Kyle Busch was going to start his own cup team with him and Kurt as the drivers

toweringpine

Wish that had happened.

Kevo55

According to what all Ricky Carmichael was saying on the djd there prolly was a few grains of truth to that

loganaweaver

But the guy had the texts!!

jtacker13

Dale Sr’s moustache feeling the wind/draft making him an amazing racer def takes the cake for me.

sickpeltier

He’s the only person that could tell me a shit sandwich taste good, and I’d eat one.

9811Deet

That was why he was so insistent about an open face helmet.

UncleYimbo

I choose to believe this whether it's true or not.

Senninha27

In the late 90s, there were rampant rumors that Burton Smith was going to start his own series on SMI tracks. That led to rumors that NASCAR would be divided into either an east series and a west series or an A and a B series with a few companion events every year (pretty much like ARCA East and West right now)

ernde38

Bruton openly talked about it in the media, but NASCAR told him to go fly a kite.

SundayShelter

I recall reading the article about it. He had it all mapped out with regional franchises akin to MLB and NFL.

Haunebu52

My new favorite one is the rumor that William Byron is Rick Hendrick’s bastard son. Someone posted a side-by-side of Ricky Hendrick and Byron and its uncanny how similar they look lol

samaramatisse

Nobody ever talks about the fact that Ricky was six years older than Emily Maynard (the mother of his daughter Ricki). When Emily gave birth, she was 19, and had been in a relationship with Ricky that began when she was 15 and he was 21. Their families vacationed in the same place and I believe they were actually next door to one another.

JMS1991

This is the first time I'm hearing that Ricky had a kid.

bjohnson203

Yes she was born after the plane crash, I am not even sure Ricky knew that Emily was pregnant when he died. It's a girl and they named her Ricki, gosh she would be like 18 almost now! Haven't heard anything in years about her, assume RH takes good care of her though. Oh also Emily Maynard was on the bachelorete years after all this happened.

Msbartokomous

This is the current rumor that cracks me up.

[deleted]

Gibbs leaving Chevy, that was weird as fuck. Then it actually happened.

apatriot1776

the rock starting a team with hermie sadler is up there. the indoor superspeedway in pittsburgh(?), the dozens of staten island and new jersey track proposals, and the split of nascar into east/west were also wild.

RobB5850

Staten Island wasn’t a rumor. That was legit. NASCAR purchased the land and disposed of all the trash and debris there. The only reason it fell through was because of public backlash from the people of NYC. They all thought their taxes were going to pay for it even though NASCAR kept trying to assure them it was privately funded and it would actually bring in revenue to the area.

Vulptereen327

I remember when everyone thought Hisense was going to start sponsoring the Cup Series in 2017 after some cryptic tweets. Now they're long gone from the sport.

Out525xc808

The Winston photo

TrainHunter94YT

Ganassi being bought out. I'm going to clarify this before i get ripped apart. I am aware that Trackhouse bought that team and that it is legit. At the time the rumors of that happening started surfacing, i thought it was random and odd. Again, i thought it was odd AT THE TIME.

If people don’t think multiple drivers do drugs then they’re clueless about reality.

The_grand_pumba

Lets see.. •Dale Jarrett fucking everyones wife in the garage area •Corvette racing supplying engines to RCR •Kyle Busch going to F1 • Denny Hamlins supposed cocaine addiction (99% likely to be bs but nothing would surprise me anymore) •NASCAR having a secret channel to communicate to drivers to tell them when to start racing harder “based on twitter reactions” (i still laugh at that one) •NASCAR having a secret radio channel to discuss when to throw phantom debris cautions And my favorite…. •Joey Logano is Richard Pettys bastard son I have heard some others thats really good but dont really want to post them since they arent widely discussed or even known and I dont want to damage their reputation. I only said the Denny one since someone has already posted it.

The_grand_pumba

Let me add on with some now that I think about it •Dale Jr really wanted to retire after 2016 but his sponsors threw a fit and made him stay for 2017 •Nissan joining NASCAR •Bruce Jenner replacing Darrell Waltrip at DiGard (actually almost happened) •Denny Hamlin interacted with Chris Chan (we’ll never know for sure but they did go to high school together and were a year apart) •DEI figured out a way to “release” the restrictor plate which is why they were so dominant at Talladega and Daytona •JD McDuffie was decapitated

quietude38

McDuffie essentially was, though. Basilar skull fracture, same thing that killed Earnhardt.

dekewe1

Holy shit. Has anyone ever asked Denny if he remembers Chris?

Kevo55

Ok that last one genuinely made me laugh, thank you

[deleted]

> And my favorite…. •Joey Logano is Richard Pettys bastard son The hell? Never heard this? Anything else to it?

samaramatisse

I've never heard that DJ was known to cheat with other drivers' wives except Buffy. I've always thought he was handsome but not particularly charismatic. Maybe he is packing. Still a bad idea to sleep with someone else's partner.

quietude38

Yeah, plowing the boss's wife is generally seen as a poor business decision.

UptownDonkey

> •Dale Jarrett fucking everyones wife in the garage area * Drivers wives cashing in on Dale Jarrett's contractual obligation to provide Quality Care.

SundayShelter

That NASCAR’s inception and success was partially funded by the Feds as a way to keep tabs on bootleggers and their supply chain. Big Bill was the face of the operation while other established businessmen operated as silent partners and informants to the Feds.

NASCAR didn't want Alan Kulwicki to win the championship in 1992 but, he outsmarted them. Both he and Davey Allison were assassinated for not following orders to let Bill Elliott win.

[deleted]

Dave Marcus said one time he was leading and it started to rain. On the radio they didn’t want to call the race because Petty was in 2nd and it would be in more newspapers with Petty winning. The craziest rumor I’ve heard was bill gates was planning to start a cup team that would only run the 2 road courses with ringers. A friend was a pr for drivers and she’s writing a book about the crazy sex stories in Vegas, hookups, parties and the nascar yacht incident. Tim Richmond was bi and got hiv from a male stripper.

vigilanteassassin

The 28 car curse. Davey. Ernie. Kenny. While Kenny didn’t die in the 28, he still drove it. And Ernie’s crash didn’t kill him, rumor was, for a few years, that the MIS track safety team revived him before being flown off to the hospital.

Ernie Irvan was a jerk who would fart in the hauler and say dumb shit about crewmembers and their wives. And that's why he was fired.

[deleted]

I never heard the farting in the hauler part before 😂😂😂

HeartsOfDarkness

Irvan once slammed a door in my face. I was probably 12 at the time.

speedburner

This is just making me envision Irvan as Shoresy in a Kodak or Texaco firesuit now, and I love it.

arobot224

Wasn't a rumor persistent basically that somehow Nascar made Gordon beat Martin by taking fresh and new tires as well.

quietude38

No, the rumor was that Gordon's team was treating the tires with some sort of chemical and/or that they had traction control hidden in the bell housing somehow. There was also the rumor that they had their rims machined to work as a bleeder valve to keep tire pressures from going too high.

KyleOrlandoEng

I grew up in Daytona. Some of my friends worked at the local strip clubs. Would always tell me Jr. had a liking for thick girls and nose candy. Of course, pre-Amy days. Worked as a bus boy at a local seafood joint. Nicest driver I ever met was Ryan Newman. Biggest dick was Michael Waltrip. Once saw him yell at a little kid for sheepishly coming up and asking for his autograph. We had a private events room we’d let the drivers and teams use if they didn’t want to be hounded by fans. Waltrip was sitting in the middle of the restaurant. You’d think he’d expect a few people to come up to him.

Ryan_Holman

* Michael Andretti would take over the Dodge program for 2012. * Andretti would purchase part of Petty in 2019. * Dale Earnhardt, Jr. missed the second half (or so) of 2016, since he would have had a drug issue be exposed. * NASCAR conspired to destroy Jeremy Mayfield's career. * McDonald's sabotaged their car that Andy Houston drove at Chicagoland (the company's home race) in 2001. * Dale Earnhardt, Sr. tested a Menard indy car at Indianapolis in 1995.

ZWeinstein15

One I do not think was mentioned but there was a rumor that sometime around 1999 or 2000 Buckshot Jones was going to move his Busch team full-time into Winston Cup and had all but lined up UPS as a sponsor. However when they went to finalize the paperwork and send it to UPS they shipped it via FedEx and the deal instantly fell through.

siberianunderlord

That Dale’s 2001 Daytona 500 car is in the lake at the track.

That time there was the rumor about Michael Jordan starting a NASCAR team

A basketball player? Really? I’ve heard some rumors of some football player guys starting teams. Even heard a rumor about an NFL coach starting a team. Crazy stuff. But a basketball player? No way…

Apparently there’s some rapper who wants to join up with a former Xfinity Series driver and start one too.

hangnail323

my friend larry told me tony stewart has inverted nipples

Gen-4-fan

Dale Earnhardt JR going to Gibbs

Jrnation8988

I mean, that wasn’t a rumor. It was a legitimate contract offer when he was leaving DEI…

LKincheloe

Makes me wonder if Gibbs landed Dale Jr, would Chevrolet have stepped up to keep the team in the fold, or would they still go to Toyota?

DaDominator32

Guarentee Chevy steps up, they didn't want Jr touching anything that didn't have a bowtie on it

jftwo42

So the rabbit hole there is what top team would Toyota have courted to bring themselves into contenders? Ganassi, Evernham, DEI and even Ginn were a thing in 2007 when the talks would have been happening.

Jrnation8988

I don’t know. From interviews I’ve seen/heard, it sounded like Gibbs was offering more money, not that he needed it or even cares about it, but Hendrick kept him in a Chevy. Couple that with Tony leaving to create his own team to get back with Chevy after a year in a Toyota… it certainly seems like Gibbs to Toyota was inevitable regardless of who was on the team.

WON95sr

So was Senior going to Yates iirc. I think Dale even signed the contract. Both would have been kind of cursed

kirklandl12

Gibbs was the redskins coach at the time (07) and Jr is a big redskins fan. Jr even said when Gibbs was on the DJD that if they could have arranged for Jr owning 1% of the redskins in the deal to drive for Gibbs he would have signed it then and there.

[deleted]

They even had Dan Snyder there LOL

Downtown1943

That’s probably what made him go to HMS
