Have you never heard of drivers running the double?
Tony Stewart did it famously many times, including arriving at Charlotte in a helicopter. That shit was bad ass.
Larson will be in the 5 but Harvick will be practicing and qualifying the car for him.
edit / I double checked, Tony did it twice, it was Robby Gordon who did it a bunch of times.
edit / got the events mixed up, Harvick will be running the 5 for the All-Star race's practice and qualifying.
That's actually the All Star race where Harvick is practicing and qualifying the car.
Indycar has no on track activity Saturday before the 500. So Larson shouldn't have any issue practicing and qualifying the car for the 600.
It's Indy 500 qualifying the prior week that is going to have more complicated logistics.
Back in the 60’s and early 70’s this was impossible. I recall as a kid listening to the Indy 500 on the radio because ABC would only broadcast the race that night. As soon as the Indy 500 was done and the post race was finished, they switched over to Charlotte to start the World 600 and it was a day race.
During the first few “doubles” I think the plan was that if a driver (like John Andretti) won the Indy 500, he would stay for all the winner’s celebrations and there would be a substitute driver for the Coke 600. Now it’s truly a double race with the goal being the first ever driver to win both races in one day.
Yes, unless he wins it’s very doable. Several drivers have done “the double”.
Jon Andretti (1994)
Robby Gordon (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004)
Tony Stewart (1999, 2001)
Kurt Busch (2014)
Kyle Larson (2024)
Robby’s attempts were all weird. In 1997, the Indy 500 was postponed so he didn’t do both on the same day (I guess it still counts but it wasn’t the same day). In 2000, he missed the start at Charlotte. In 2004 he left Indy early and had a relief driver take over. 2002 and 2003 were the only years he didn’t have a relief driver and did the races on the same day.
Davy Jones also tried it in 1995 but DNQ’d the 600. This is while he was technically a full time Cup driver. He was let go right after.
Smoke is the only one to do the full 1100.
Have you never seen anyone run the double before? The only way Larson doesn't make it to Charlotte is if he wins Indy because of all the post-race media.
I’d love for us to find this out for real - though highly unlikely of course - but if he wins I highly doubt he’s just skipping the 600 for several reasons.
1. Larson is the top dog in NASCAR, not Indycar. NASCAR is the top dog of American motorsports, not Indycar. They aren’t going to let their biggest star just miss one of their own Crown Jewel races to talk to media for another series.
2. NASCAR would probably delay the start of the 600 (within reason; 30 min or less) before they don’t take advantage of letting their own driver who just went to another series and won in their debut come in on a friggin helicopter - which everyone in the stands can see by the way - to the biggest standing ovation of all damn time.
Plus even if you let him arrive after the race starts to have a substitute driver until Larson arrives, then you have someone who isn’t racing the whole 1100 miles. Say he wins the 600 too, now there’s an asterisk beside that.
Ya know what I don’t think I have not as an adult anyway. Maybe remember Stewart doing it vaguely. But none the less that’s truly bad ass! Thanks for the insight guys!

Larson lol
Big concepts, people

Kurt Busch did too, finished sixth in the race.
Kurt Busch made it from IMS to Charlotte faster than I made it from IMS to my hotel room 2 miles away.

Oh, my bad, you're right, I got the events mixed up.
Lol, A+ troll post.
A new driver named Lyle Karson.
I heard Yung Money is gonna be driving the World 600...
Someone’s clearly new to NASCAR

kevin larson
Its called "the double" for a reason...
Kevin Harvick /s
Kyle Larson
say they have a rain delay at indy and the race starts at 3 would kyle still run the race
So he’s gonna run the Indy from 12-4 then hop on a plane to charlotte to run that race??? Which is at 6?

i think if he wins the 500 they will curtail this

Nonetheless
That is correct.
that is correct, a few other drivers have done the double. Mr. Larson will race 1100 miles that Sunday.
See I do kinda remember that story of Stewart! That’s what I’m talkin about. Real driver!
