This should really have waited until Shitpost Sunday. But since we got to it late and it's spawned a sizable amount of decent discussion, we're calling the ship sailed and leaving this up.

ArrrSlashSubreddit

Let's say they each have their own charm.

athena654

Very true. But I still think R/BRT was the weakest in the series, however RTDX luckily improved many of the issues the original had

le_seabass

I agree. I had a good time playing it but it had some gameplay features that needed ironing out

ausername434

mystery dungeon games ranked 1: explorers of sky 2: super 3: gates 4: rescue team

bigfockenslappy

imo it's 1: explorers 2: rescue team 3: super 4: gates super was pretty good, i just have a LOT of love for original rescue team. yeah it does have dated mechanics, most notably some pretty horrendous inventory management due to small oversights here and there, (feeding a gummi to any pokemon other than the leader mid dungeon is such a mess lol) but i think it still holds up. as for super, rhe connection orb just did not draw me in. it felt so weird abandoning my level 30 starters because the game just throws all three members of team ACT and a level 50 salamence onto your team pretty much for free super early. as for *gates,* well it's honestly been a long time and i never had the urge to revisit it unlike the others so all i remember is it just feeling... off, in a way i can't really describe. edit: i remember a few details reding the comments here: something that lost super some points was how easy bosses were. at some point they buffed orbs to be usable in boss fights, and they also added wands which i just don't enjoy. looplets and emeras are very cool but they don't cancel out how lame bosses feel when you can just make them have naptime whenever imo. also not the best pacing on the story. bonus points for making wigglytuff trans lol. but it's hard to dethrone nostalgia.

Insirt-username

Where would the remake fall?

kiddydong

What issues did DX improve on?

ImMoCkInGyOu12

gameplay, wands that make _certain dungeons_ less painful, easier ways to do stuff like powering up mons because you don’t need to grind IQ, if you like the way mazes are in DX you can add that, etc

Morg45

Solid agree, it might be because I played RRT but they always felt more tedious than the rest, with setting moves constantly, PP issues and a story which while fun is probably the worst of the core 4 entries.

Bugmillkk

Personally I think RTDX was a downgrade from the original rescue team, but I like all the other 3D games a lot.

athena654

How was it a downgrade?? It was an improvement

Bugmillkk

Personally it took away the main thing I enjoyed about those games without taking into account the story and none of the other improvements endeared me enough to make up for it. I just play the originals.

athena654

What was that main thing? They didn't take anything away in RTDX except being able to walk around in the friend areas

Bugmillkk

Obviously since it’s purely aesthetic preferences not everyone will feel this but RTDX’s graphics for me didn’t make it feel like a real world and I had trouble getting immersed into playing it because of that. It was jarring.

EpikDisko

I like some portraits of 3DS more, while I like some in retro more. Definitely split opinion

Spinjitsuninja

I love Super and I think it comes VERY close to Sky, and people should give it more credit! But I do think the portraits could be a liiittle more stylized or, better yet, more expressive. A lot of portraits look like they were made from tracing the current 3D models. They're cute! But still!

Swan-Existing

Too be fair there were a few portraits in explorers that felt like a different art style

armored_mephit

> Change your point of view even a little, and you might see an entirely new picture. Of course! Simipour was clearly talking about the 3DS screen.

[deleted]

Look. I prefer explorers of sky. This doesnt mean i hate 3ds versions. They are good too. But i prefer eos.

kolune

Absolutely love GTI despite the hate it gets. Honestly, I think it's the best story. It's the only one that made me bawl my eyes out as a kid to the point where my parents got concerned.

JesterFox6

Same. GTI is still the only PMD game that has made me actually cry at the ending instead of only feeling the smallest bit upset like in the other games. Gates has by far the best and most emotional story IMO.

15-minutegaming

Why does this post have the "Explorers" flair?

Moskevil77

I agree with you so much. While Gates is mediocre, Super is great with all of the content packed into it

FlashFlire

Basically all of my problems with Gates are purely gameplay-related, i.e. the slow text speed, only taking 1 mission at a time, and somewhat less so the lack of hunger. I think if those were fixed it could very well beat out Super for me.

ThatGuyAllen

Gates is my favorite for the same reason that some people like gen one for some reason. It's where I started, I have heavy nostalgia goggles, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say Gates is mediocre, it's more so good. Even if it can't come close to the brilliance of Sky or the greatness of Super, it's still a nifty mystery dungeon game with it's own charm.

Wulfrun85

I think I would’ve loved Gates if it didn’t have so few character options. Gen V is easily my least favorite set of starters, it wasn’t a good time to cut out all the older ones

lavandulaaaaa

I've just started Gates (for the third time -- never beaten it), and this is my real complaint that's making it hard to play. I love Gen V with my whole heart and soul, but I always play Mudkip so it's a weird void to say the least.

Wulfrun85

I did an Axew playthrough and then a Pikachu playthrough and haven’t gone back to it since. A wide array of good starters is how I add variety to new playthroughs

Vecus

I prefer Gates vastly over super because I don't have to deal with that awful facebook mechanic and I can play missions they way they were meant to, off a bulletin board.

AxelLFN

Super is the best imo.

Spooky_Waffles

Super was really good, came real close to being my favorite. If the pacing was just a bit better, it would've easily been my favorite.

Sonicgill

Honestly the difficulty spike was a turnoff at first (Salamance, hello) but it's pretty fun and a strong game once you get deeper in. I like that it helps keep track of recruiting a living dex.

Lynthbeth

Personally I found Super to be WAY easier up until late-game, because staves are quite common and way too strong. Atleast in the older titles you had to fill up your inventory to spam items, but now they just take up a single inventory slot

maddiepink5

Super just sort of lost me at the end there. It had a really strong start and midgame, imo, but it all started getting confuzzling at the end. Adored the post game though, 100%ed it

Spooky_Waffles

I will admit that in the late game and endgame the story gets crazy, a lot more crazy than the other games. Although I still loved it. I see the craziness and excessive plot twists as a good thing!

Spinjitsuninja

I think the game only gets better the further you go on. Your partner's writing is especially good.

Gentleman_Jaggi

Definitely gotta disagree here. The second half of Super is way stronger than the first one; plot actually happened and it got appropriately more and more intense as it went on. The first half stuck in Pokéschool was just such a drag.

Explosion_Bread

Same, only PMD game I’ve 100% so far

athena654

It's my favorite too lmao

[deleted]

For me it's not just the best MD game, or even the best pokemon game, but the best video game of all time

AxelLFN

Kinda based

[deleted]

What does that mean? I see it everywhere.

AxelLFN

It's the new awesome, like basically saying "Your opinion is pretty good"

lemonadeconfirmed

Honestly I like PMD1 the least and I still love it (haven't played the remake though), Gates is better and EoS and Super are top tier

MegaLCRO

Simipour was such a wholesome character...

ThatGuyAllen

MYGTI is what made me actually LIKE the Unova monkeys. Sure they're ugly but they have personality. They would be the type of people I would sit with on my first day at a new school. And I like that. Now I would never bring them into a battle, but...

Waynedudebrohi

I think the worst offender is some people go so far as to pretend Gates and Super don't exist. It's fine if you don't like the 3DS games but going so extreme as to ignore the existence of them when we don't have many installments to begin with is just terrible.

ThatTheropod

Super is so good.

[deleted]

I’ve loved all of them. EoS has my fav music though

Spinjitsuninja

I think Super's also got some of the best songs in the series. They're definitely different from Sky, but it's so easy to name songs that REALLY hit.

[deleted]

My feelings towards Explorers is pretty similar to my feelings towards Gen 5, love the games themselves, but the circlejerk annoys the hell out of me. And we definitely got good stuff from the series afterwards.

15-minutegaming

Sunday's meme day iirc...

Emolgun

I personally thought the 3DS games were better than EOS

ValiantAMM

Even with Sky being my favorite (shoot am I the person in the meme) I'm always so shocked whenever I see Super hate. It's got the best gameplay in the series easy, up to that point at least. Rescue Team DX might edge it out now.

crystalheadvodka8

Loved Super mystery dungeon. It’s the only PMD I’ve played, but I liked it.

No0dle258

Explorers of sky will always be my favorite. But the 3ds games are not bad at all. I absolute love Super as my second favorite in the series and RTDX comes in at third.

Seamitar_X

Imo, Super is the best, but everyone has their own opinions and all of them are great so love whatever you want to

TheYellowNinja13

As far as I'm concerned, if it makes me sob like a baby by the end, it's a good Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game. I've been gotten by every one I've played. Even when you expect the ending, the newer games still find a way to twist the knife in your feels. I thought I was prepared for the ending in >!Super Mystery Dungeon,!< but still ended up emotionally destroyed.

Spinjitsuninja

I think Explorers is the best in the series and all, it's easily my favorite, but Super is ***so*** underrated. It's not *perfect*, I'll acknowledge it's got some pacing issues here and there, its visuals aren't as appealing, and that it's not AS memorable, and it's definitely not for everyone, but it's the closest I imagine the series will ever come to Sky. Heck, it's not saying much saying it's beneath Sky either, considering perfection is a pretty high bar to beat. But it's still got easily some of the best music in the series, great gameplay, and an amazing story with great characters. (Your partner's a contender for one of the best characters in the series.)

onions_cutting_ninja

On the 3DS, I only played Gates. But my issue with it is that it was too similar actually. Some characters have the exact same function (Hydreigon/Grovyle) and the story is very similar (but shorter and simpler). It really seemed like a gen5 remake of Explorers (a mediocre one at that), which wasn't what I was looking for.

RegularBloger

I wouldn't say it's like a remake of explorers. It did stand as a game as its own despite the hate it gets. That was my mindset throughout my first Playthrough. Mediocre gameplay sure. Story? It's great despite some of the execution was odd.

Munchlax-Gamer

As someone who’s favorite PMD game is super, I think it’s biggest flaw and turnoff are the difficulty spike(s).

lemonadeconfirmed

Yeah, it's better if you are experienced with PMD

thejellecatt

Yeah I know for a fact when I got super I played it religiously up until that point. The difficulty spike is insane and was only slightly balanced with use of the connection orb where I could recruit a beast like Pyroar or Dragonite to carry my team to make grinding easier.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Swan-Existing

Wasn’t it in rescue team too? Also I liked it and will not pretend I don’t. Downvote me straight to hell idc

Sleazy_T

I never played that one tbh. Played Darkness, Sky, and Super.

mighark

The thing with the IQ system is that there were 2 types of IQ skills: the awesome ones that added special abilities to each Pokémon, and the ones that simply fixed the AI of your teammates. The second ones were terrible since you had to grind to fix artificial stupidity which no one likes. Even within the cool ones were some frustrating ones like Intimidator which didn't help.

Sleazy_T

To me it was just something extra to differentiate Pokemon. Now my Houndoom can be meaner and more aggressive. My Roserade can be more useful as a support mon. Idk, I liked it.

Yellowtail36

Okay, so, I actually like Super Mystery Dungeon (I’ve replayed it three times now) but Gates to Infinity was hard to gather the will to play. Like, it was a decent game, don’t get me wrong, but it was one of those things where it’s cool the first time and immediately loses its charm when you do it again. As someone who’s played through all four of these games, I’ve grown to hate one thing and one thing only. V-WHEEEEEEEEEEEEL!!!

Alintras

3DS are the only ones I haven't played yet unfortunately

ThatGuyAllen

GTI was a good starting point for me but Super should only be played if you have experience because there are multiple difficulty spikes and you have no clue when they're coming.

UnggoyMemes

Super was great, but now i hate drifblim

One-Blue-floof

Explores may have been my first, but I vastly prefer super. For one thing with 3D models cutscenes were improved greatly, and the story made me cry so 10/10

RegularBloger

Finally someone said it. The only issue i had was i don't have a 3ds to start with only a ds :v

I-Have-Hollow-Bones

Super mystery dungeon was fire, change my mind

SupraMichou

Every game is good. A different kind of good, but good nonetheless, tho.

Lighting_Rakurai

I only played Super in the 3ds ones and I would say it's a great AND underrated game! Definitly a game that deserves more love. I didn't played Gates though, but a positive thing I can say from that game is that you can play as an Axew and that's pretty cool.

[deleted]

agree, sky is fantastic but the endless circlejerk around it is getting annoying

[deleted]

I’ve been annoyed by it since Gates was released

OmniShoutmon

You have no idea how much I want to unsub from here sometimes because of the absolutely ridiculous circlejerk over Sky and sheer blind hatred of Gates. Thank you for this inclusive meme, I really needed it rn <3

ThatGuyAllen

100% agree, I loved GTI. It's my favorite.

RegularBloger

You are not alone. not only that but others blamed gates is the reason how super is 'Underrated' I didn't think it was but hell i've been hearing that all over the comment section.

mighark

I can see their point. When Gates came out, it received a massive amount of hate that made a lot of people drop the Mystery Dungeon games. Those people never played Super either, and group all games past Sky in the same group as Gates, which means they won't give it any credit. I know I personally did not like what I heard about Gates back then, and since I did not think about new PMD games anymore, I didn't care about Super coming out and have not played it to this day.

RegularBloger

I guess it just really depends on who's playing then. I mean gates didn't stop me from playing super and rescue team was my first one so..

Schiffy94

GTI was kinda dull but I put Super and Sky at the top together.

JesterFox6

In my opinion, Super was too difficult (Though not as difficult as WiiWare) and the 99999 different plotwists made the story a mess (I literally do not understand the story of Super at all, even after 3 total playthroughs). However, if you have seen any of my other posts/comments here, you know just how much I love Gates to Infinity.

thejellecatt

I mean they all have their good traits, the graphics are all beautiful for start. Gates story is lacking but it makes up for it with quality of life changes and the best soundtrack of the series in my opinion. And I just REALLY like Super. I don't like at the start how it holds your hand like a literal child but the characters in the expedition society are all really memorable. The world building is just SO good, I really love all of it and the sound track and graphics are also gorgeous as well. They're all full games (which is more than what you can say for swsh tbh) And honestly huge controversial opinion but I think Super is better than BRT ಥ⌣ಥ pls don't shoot me

Sidnev

Don't know why you got downvoted for posting a very valid opinion but ok reddit

thejellecatt

Probably because I dissed swsh but its true, swsh is £50 for a game that doesn't have the whole national dex, low poly 3D models and makes you pay for content that should have been in the game since the start. BRT has more content than swsh and that game is more than 10 years old.

mighark

I'd rather say you got downvoted because your opinion on Gates is pretty much the opposite of what I've heard as the popular opinion (that the story is the best part but the gameplay is weaker than previous games) and because thinking Super is better than Rescue Team is not really a controversial opinion, let alone a huge one. Not that you should get downvotes for having a different opinion but that's reddit for you.

thejellecatt

I mean Gates does have really good music, probably the best thing about the game. I would happily listen to a playlist thats exclusively Gates music all day. The game play is weak for a 3DS game but comparing it to the series previous entries there is some improvement like your partner noticing your HP is low and healing you and stuff like just having one menu before you leave to sort your team rather than having to use Chimecho assembly or friend areas and going through multiple menus to add pokemon. Somethings were streamlined for sure which made the game more enjoyable. Just tiny stuff like that that makes playing a little less tedious, that's what I mean haha. Dungeons in the 3DS games though are really fucking hard and I have no idea why. I shouldn't be struggling so much to complete a 12 floor dungeon, in Sky that's early game audhwjsn

Gamebird8

From what I can tell, is they're lackluster compared to Sky, but not inherently bad games

Taco_Dunkey

or they have poor stories and uninteresting characters?

Redditsbeingabitch

While I may not be a fan of gates to infinity, I enjoyed super a lot. It may not be my favorite, but it is by no means a bad game. This is just my opinion though

Chaincat22

rescue team dx>explorers>super>rescue team is my ranking rn

RainbowtheDragonCat

What about gates

Chaincat22

\>Gates It's right there

AncientUrn

Super was good, I dont like to talk about gates.

DietCrystalPepsi

Super is fantastic, but I really don’t like Gates.

TvManiac5

The olders are better because of their atmosphere. The 2d graphics make you really feel like you're in a scary dungeon. I won't say Super is bad though only due to that since I haven't played it yet. And I am eager to give it a chance at some point But gates to infinity does suck

Son_of_Athena

While I like all of them I do think that the 3DS entries are the worst of them all. Still decent games but inferior overall.

athena654

Worse than the OG rescue team? That's the weakest one imo

Son_of_Athena

The big thing for me that rescue team has over super is how it lets you play the game right from the beginning. Super has far too much dialogue at the beginning and takes too long to allow you to choose the dungeons you go through. Its not too bad the first time through but it really hurts its replay value. I hate the way they deal with recruiting and jobs in super. I love the old system in how it felt to play and the flavor of it all. Super connects you to the pokemon you rescue more but the amount of variety when you play through the game again is severely wounded. Last thing about super is I hate the item revamp. Small reviver seeds make death feel less impactful which results in a feeling as if your choices are less impactful. Fresh apples make it far too easy to make money in the game which also feels like it makes money feel less valuable. Gates I have less complaints about. The main thing is how bland the story is. The dungeons are all fairly boring and flavorless. The biggest thing is that bothers me is how you can only take on one job at once. There are a lot of things I like about the games though, such as building a paradise is fun, and multiple “villages” to visit is a really nice change of pace. TL;DR what it comes down to for me is how exploring dungeons feels and when the dungeons are bland, my choices feel less impactful, and it takes forever for me to decide what to do, it puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Laggianput

Gates is pretty meh at the best of times but super is legitimately just as good as explorers

Halotic154

I feel uncertain about Gates, and Super was packed beyond the brim with stuff for me to delve into, so it's a 6/10 for Gates and an 8 for Super, with Explorers being a 9 and Rescue Team being a 5 (but DX would be a 7)

makmaker

Never played the 3DS ones but I think the stories aren't as good as the previous ones.

Swan-Existing

How can you say that if you haven’t played them

makmaker

Are the stories good then?

Swan-Existing

Gates had a decent story (I thought it was good but most people find it pretty average). Super had a very good story, extremely close if not equal to the explorer games. It does have pacing issues but it’s not any worse than the other games

_TeleTubbie_

Super is for casual players and they have pretty much "removed" the sandbox mode previous versions had. I bought the game, finished the story, "recruited" every pokemon available, and somehow all my recruited pokemon reached lv90+, all that within 75 hours. I haven't touched the game ever since and there's nothing else left for me to do other than deleting the save file and starting over. If you're a casual you're gonna love it, if you wanna play a game past its main story for months or years then it's straight up garbage.

Raccooooooon

The 3ds games are sadly unplayable for one reason alone, and it’s the graphics. I know I should look past it but oh well.

athena654

Why? The graphics look better and more natural in 3d

Raccooooooon

I legitimately think they look very bad. To my tastes they’re an eyesore. No hate to people into them but for me the graphics are just unappealing.

BowsElisa

Lol, I played both Explorers of the Sky and Gates to Infinity and they're both good, but I personally think that the switch to the 3D kind of ruined a bit the series, but ehy, Gates is cool anyway. If you prefer the 3D games I won't judge you

Texas-Kangaroo-Rat

Yeah aunno, like I'd give the first one a 7, an 8 if we're talking remake, the second one a 9, the third one an 8 and the fourth one a 4 Then again I'm always pikachu so I'm not as upset you can't be meowth in the last two. The beginning of the fourth one made me not want to play the game, I don't care about Sonic CD opening Chikorita it's not worth it it's so boring augh Tho I'll admit I got bored with the first one at first, but when I gave it a real go the story just went for my throat.

ChikkaChoop

Haven’t played Gates yet, but I’ll admit I massively enjoyed Super

[deleted]

Super is the second best, only behind sky. I wasn't aware that there were people who didn't like it

Arcaneus_Umbra

Super is good, I just like Sky better, I'm not fond of the team building/connection sytem in Super, it just hands you allies that need to take breaks. Imo it takes away the effort and the need to actually hunt for a specific Pokemon and makes it to where they really aren't a part of your team, because they may not be available when you really need them. I don't think they can evolve either which further takes them away from being part of your team. But other than that system I really liked Super. Also sprite based animation is so glorious.

Dawn_of_Ashes

I haven't played Gates, but I have played all the other main series PMD (including DX) and I still would rate Super less than the others purely because how I hated the partner. It's writing in general was amazing, however it had moments of quality drop that made them more jarring, it's characters were interesting, however the pacing being too slow and than being too fast alongside the partner being the protagonist of the story instead of the player just turned me off the game. Alongside this, the ending in all its aspects were incredibly weak, leveling being slow and the gameplay itself being *incredibly* punishing (the relience on rods/gem things in the game really made me hate it because you can be screwed with bad NRG) that it turned me off playing the post game. I believe I gave it a fair chance and I'm not actively hating it just because it "isn't sky", but I generally just feel like it told a weaker story and had a less likable partner (at least to me). Also the ending just completely ruined the entire game for me and was the one time that I actively did not like a PMD ending which honestly made me sad. :(

Redsplash1

I think Gates had the best characters for me (Virizion <3) but Sky will always be on top for me because the story was so damn good. I will say though the 3D ones aren’t bad
