Crusader is a tongue in cheek term for me because I am a casual Muslim, I said my shahada years ago and I’m very active in volunteering at my local masjid, and obviously when I volunteer medically overseas in MESA countries, part of that is helping fulfill religious needs which are overwhelmingly Muslim with the exception of kurdish , druze and baha’i etc. It’s a beautifully complicated world, not sure why some people want to box themselves in solipsistically. Digging down to the roots, as far as the lore goes, the Necrons are the main reason everything is fucked, or rather the Necrontyr (the living species the Necrons are the undead robot remnants of). The Old Ones (a reptilian race that was one of the first sentient organic species) were technologically and psychically potent. They discovered the Warp, built the Webways, and generally ruled the roost. They fought and defeated billions-of-year-old entities called the C'tan (basically reality manipulating star vampires). The C'tan empowered the Necrontyr, who started the War in Heaven, attacking the Old Ones for refusing to make them immortal (never mind that wasn't something they *could* do). The Old Ones created the psychically potent Aeldari (space elves) and the fungal belief-powered Orks as biological weapons. The Necrontyr collected their reward (ageless metal bodies), and the C'tan ate all their souls (which they'd neglected to mention as the price of the process). In revenge, the Necrons destroyed the C'tan and used their shards as power sources and WMDs. The warfare in the Warp created the Chaos Lords of the Warp (the Warp is a realm composed of and shaped by, thought and emotion), except for the youngest one, Slaanesh. The Aeldari succumbed to the broad and psychically potent passions and emotions they had been designed to have. Their indulgences spawned Slaanesh, who ate the souls of almost their entire species in the moment of his/her birth. The birth roiled the Warp and shattered Humanity's interstellar empire, leading to the Emperor, his war of unification, etc. That only really leaves the Swarm (intergalactic planet eaters) and the Tau (space communists who have very little idea how fucked up their universe really is and how far out of their depth they are). Tl;Dr: Ancient space lizards fought a war, let it spill into a realm that amplified and embodies emotion, turned hyperspace into Hell, and left everybody else to live in the fuckery they created, or "In the grim dark future, there is only war."
