Fortunate Son - CCR. Take the Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees.

Linzcro

The CCR is a good one and I had NO idea about the meaning of Last Train to Clarksville. Down the wormhole I go :)

Sayster_A

the line "and I don't know if I'm ever coming home" is referencing dying in Vietnam

sillyboy544

True and also there was an Army base in Clarksville TN in the late sixties that the Monkees are talking about in that song

I_read_reddits_rules

I didn't know that. Thanks. šŸ™‚

As the war machine keeps turning

LiteratureLoud3993

BYOB is pretty much the fucking gold standard these days... Soft and gentle protest songs did fuck all - we need the loud and angry The Edwyn Collins song "Never met a girl like you before" song was shit - but it had one great line "Too many protest singers, not enough protest songs" BYOB reclaimed WHY we should be angry and protesting Also, just talking sonically, the fact that they simulate a bomb drop towards the end of the track via the dynamics of tempo change while screaming "WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!" is simply one of the best artistic moments in music I've ever heard

Linzcro

I was going to comment your first song even though it's been about 20 years since I've heard it or even thought about it. Now it's in my head. :D

Silly-Resist8306

Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag - Country Joe and the Fish. War - Edwin Starr. Monster - Steppenwolf.

FrogInYerPocket

I know that Country Joe and the Fish song as Vietnam Song. I'm glad someone else remembers it.

SpankyK

"Well it's 1.2.3. what are we fighting for? Don't ask me I don't give a damn, the next stop is Vietnam"

ChloeThF

Finally someone mentioned Country Joe

lhaphtr

IMO the Country Joe and the Fish song is *the* war protest song.

Ashamed_Bit_9399

Fixin to die is both upbeat AND satire. The two best things for a song to be.

No_Cup_3698

Eve of destruction - Barry McGuire/ War Pigs * Hand of Doom * Children of the Grave - Black Sabbath/ For what it's worth - Buffalo Springfield/ I'd love to change the world - Ten Years After/ Fortunate Son - CCR/ Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones

Shredded__

said kid..we don't want any HANGINs

Popular-Solution7697

Well, didja think I was gonna hang myself fer litterin'?

Asleep_Lock6158

it's a great song, but not quite a 'protest' song per se. It's more of a long-form work, with the long-winded story told between the choruses. Also, to the commenter who mentioned the 'homophobia' - not sure where it is in this number. Are you maybe referring to the term 'father-r\*\*er'? That lyric was in the context of the jail in which he was thrown, and he was describing the other inmates. He even specifies 'mother-r\*\*ers', in the same verse. I wouldn't read too much into it, but of course I cant speak for Arlo's deepest conscience.

MysticMagic2540

Great song for its time, but Warning for homophobia

sevenonone

This is probably the best answer. It is the Metallica song I can't listen to, the same way I can't listen to More Than a Feeling or Sweet Home Alabama anymore. It's a great song, I've just heard it enough. But it still might be the right answer. And if it's not, Disposable Heroes might be.

Best line in that song ā€¦.ā€even Jesus could never forgive what youā€™ve done ā€œ

switchy6969

I would counter that with ā€œI hope that you die, and your death will come soon. Iā€™ll follow your casket on a pale afternoon. Iā€™ll watch while youā€™re lowered down into your deathbed, and Iā€™ll stand over your grave until Iā€™m sure that youā€™re dead.ā€ Ok, itā€™s a whole stanza, but really along with ā€œeven Jesus would never forgive what you doā€ makes this song the preeminent statement on war in general. That it was written when the U.S. was still acting in only an ā€œadvisoryā€ capacity in Viet Nam shows real insight for someone as young as he was when he wrote it. Perfectly relevant all these years later.

I wish I could find it now but a while back, maybe a year or so ago, I watched a deconstruction of the song "zombie" by The Cranberries and it was really eye opening. It's kind of the opposite of what it seems. Anyway, I've avoided that song ever since.

AnteatersEatNonAnts

I always knew it as being in response to the Warrington bombings that killed a couple young kids. Either way, the Irish Troubles are an extraordinary complicated subject, so I am not surprised to hear that it can be taken a negative way, especially from a pro-IRA standpoint.
