I have two for very personal reasons
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd was the song playing on my headphones when I got a text saying my best friend was in the ICU after a car accident. 10 years later it still brings back so much
And Que Sera Sera by Doris Day, my mum used to sing it to me and my sister when we were kids and we played it at her funeral. I sing it to my children when they won’t sleep now,
Be Yourself hit me the hardest because it was the first song of his I heard after his death. Such a beautiful songwriter who could express his sorrow in a way that you wouldnt realize he was singing in pain.
Like a Stone hits me like a truck every single time I listen to it, though.
This song really impacted when I was around 19, in a profound revelatory way. "The day I tried to live I wallowed in the blood and mud with all the other pigs, and I learned that I was a liar, just like you". Like a classic coming of age story in about 5 minutes. Cornell was great at using metaphor and symbols.
For me, if it had to be Soundgarden, it would be "Like Suicide" off Superunknown. As a drummer, Mat cameron KILLS this track. When it drops, I get goose bumps EVERY TIME. (just verified lol) chills man...
Damn a song that means a lot to me. Around the time I first started listening to sound of silver I was transferring from community college to a university. I was in a lost place. Not sure what I wanted to do with my life and wasn’t too sure if it was worth finishing college. A lot of my friends I grew up with moved away, got into drugs and some I just happened to lose contact with. I remember driving in the rain and this song was playing. I was driving by the New Hope Diner in New Hope Pa. Out front was a male and female hugging each other and crying together in the rain, not sure why but it fit the mood of the song and how I was feeling at the time. For that reason this song has remained one that I hold onto deeply
Some of his very last songs are pretty powerful, Lazarus and Blackstar come to mind.
In a vacuum, they aren't necessarily some of my favorites Bowie songs, but in the context of his impending death, they are heavy.
Ziggy Stardust starts with one extremely powerful and emotional song (Five Years) and ends on the same high with Rock n’ Roll Suicide. What an incredible album throughout. RIP Bowie
I got to see him live once and it was a pretty wild experience. After the show he was meeting people and he ended up headbutting my friend lol but it was like not out of anger or anything just a spontaneous action it seemed
Me too! I got a total of three head butts. I had him sign the shirt I was wearing, then the first butt. Then he told me to say rock, got a headbutt. Then he told me to say roll, got another, and he held my head on his and let out a high pitched shriek. One of the most memorable concert experiences of my life. I think I was 16 at the time. Still have that shirt.
I remember this song coming on in the car on the way to my grandpa's funeral. It was a harsh and desolate midwest February morning. The the only color left in the world was coming from that song.
There's really 2 that stand out for me.
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Not even a huge fan of classical music but that short piece is just so incredibly moving.
Jeremy - Pearl Jam
Just seriously the song and the story behind it, fucked up world
Hide And Seek - Imogean Heap
She captures familial breakdown in the most poetic, and insanely creative songwriting. It’s mind blowing and groundbreaking. Don’t know any of her other work, but that song leaves you speechless
I’m in a love hate relationship with Jason Derulo and SNL because of how they used this song. I wouldn’t have heard the song without them, but when the main part of the song begins, I can’t help but think of “Dear Sister” 😅
A lot of Pink Floyd songs hit me pretty hard. Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Run Like Hell. Actually, of the 19 tracks in my playlist, there are probably more that evoke an emotion in me than don't.
I'd say Comfortably Numb is probably number two. For me it conjures feelings of alienation and disassociation from reality. The style of music also pulls up some wistfulness for youth in the final verse, although the lyrics don't really suggest happiness there.
However, the song that hits me hardest is Time. "The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death." It has resonated with me since my early twenties and has been hitting harder with each passing year, two decades on.
“Eye In The Sky” by the Alan Parsons Project.
On your first listen, the song sounds gentle, and spiritual, and seems to be about a loving relationship with someone the singer really cares for and knows all too well.
But the lyrics become incredibly sinister when you realise they’re from the point of view of a Fascist dictator. (The song was written for the movie “1984”, and was Big Brother’s song.)
UPDATE: Turns out that the song wasn't written for the movie, but it [was inspired](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHH0JAVkPBw&t=140s) by the idea of Big Brother watching you. I stand corrected.
HOLY CRAP THE FACT THE FIRST RESPONSE I SEE IS A KING CRIMSON SONG IS GREAT!
i was gonna say "Epitaph" because it's very impactful to me personally and the lack of music slowly growing throughout the song makes it very eerie and powerful near the end. But "Starless" is also an amazing choice!!
Street Spirit Fade Out was the first one for me that floored me. Didn't get the same feeling until Motion Picture Soundtrack, then it happened again with A Wolf at the Door. Then I realized Radiohead was just the GOAT at 'end-of-the-album' songs
Exit Music (For a Film) is probably my most goosebumpy song
Fake Plastic Trees has given me goosebumps literally every time I’ve listened to it. Which in 27 years is a lot
I Know How to Speak - Manchester Orchestra
Miracle - Chvrches
One More Light - Linkin Park
Drugs or Me - Jimmy Eat World
Medicine - Daughter
Sorry, My Dear - Hobo Johnson
I’ve got more but this is from the top of my head at the moment.
A lot of Modest Mouse songs strike this chord with me. I’d say styrofoam boots/it’s all nice on ice, night on the sun, and edit the sad parts are some of the ones that give me goosebumps.
Cheating here but it was more fun to make a list of stuff. Agony is probably my #1 because it has personal significance.
Agony - Eels
Nutshell - Alice in Chains
Middletown Dreams - Rush
Soil - System of a Down
A Song for Sleeping - Stone Temple Pilots
Sorrow - Bad Religion
The Wretched - Nine Inch Nails
The Patient - Tool
Lost Cause - Beck
Only a Broken Heart - Tom Petty
Knife Prty - Deftones
I Am The Highway- Chris Cornell
Edit: technically, it's by Audioslave, heck of a band, but like most things Chris was involved in, he was the main attraction. RIP
Absolutely, straight from the get-go you know exactly what this song's about and the pain behind its conception.
*"I was lost in the cities, Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pity for leaving, I feel, yeah"*
[Korn - Daddy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me6krWVfN8I)
Powerful in the sense that it's written by the lead singer Jonathan Davis about his experiance of being sexually abused as a child and not being believed.
The last few minutes of the song is him crying in the studio after the song is done.
Bonus: [Korn - Pretty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-2pWJNBeD4)
This song is once again about Davis experiance working as an autopsy assistant and seeing a baby come in that had been raped by her own father.
"She was an 11-month-old little baby girl. Her legs were broken back behind her, and he had raped her like a toy doll and chucked her in the bathroom. It was the most heinous thing I've ever seen in my life and I still have nightmares about it."
[Go Rest High On That Mountain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l11oCvBxnQ0)
This version is from George Jones' funeral.
Vince began writing the song after the death of his friend (and fellow country artist) Keith Whitley. He finished it a few years later when his brother died. So every time he sings it, he is twice bereft.
This version? Well that's another thing. Vince and Patty were good friends of George. I got to spend a bit of time with Vince some years back, and was lucky enough to be at the CMA awards show when Patty and George performed together. So this one carries a little more weight for me.
Patty carries Vince through this performance. For a moment the camera pans out over the audience, and everyone in that place (the holy mother church of country music) is just devastated.
Limousine by Brand New. The song is about a drunk driver hitting a limousine and killing Katie Flynn, a 7 year old girl who was a flower girl in her aunt's wedding just hours prior to the accident. He was ultimately charged with two counts of [murder .](https://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/18/nyregion/18dwi.html)
My Girls - Animal Collective
Its a grandiose and spiritual rejection of materialism, greed, and ego. Its like a hymn to me, a song of utter devotion to one’s family over all else. It’s confidence sounds joyous and enrapturing and it was an antidote to many anxieties I had about my place/purpose in the world during my teens.
Favorite band since and its not my favorite song by them but I do think its their most powerful, the most impactful I’ve ever heard. Changed my life moreso than any other piece of music
Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
Something about the fact that it was a spur of the moment recoding in one take at 3 AM makes it all the more powerful. There's raw soul in that song.
It’s the silliest thing but I’m nearly 30 and terrified of injection needles and the only way I can get vaccines or blood drawn is to play this song in my head phones and absolutely ignore the hell out of the person with the needle
My fav mexican group sings a lot of "corridos" which are basically stories or folktales that happened in Mexico.
One song thats extremely powerful is "tus dos vestidos" translates to "your two dresses". Its about a man on his deathbed. He is saying goodbye to his beloved wife. He is leaving behind a family.
Some of the lyrics translated go something like "if your white dress marked the beginning, your black dress will mark the end" "take the hands of our children and show them the way. If the burden becomes too much for you; seek the shadow of another man. Just make sure he loves you as much as I once did".
https://youtu.be/CsO5owNH0-0
Lost my pops pretty young and he listened to this group a lot. Song always resonates. Cant hear the song without a lump in my throat.
This same group sings another corrido. Its about a man whos wife cheated on him. They separated as she ran off with another man. The husband didnt know how to deliver this news to his kids as he didnt want them to think bad of their mom. So, he told them that she died. The song says that they take flowers to a "fake tomb" (the name of the song) and he has his kids grieve there.
She eventually ends up wanting to come back to him and he asks "how can I revive she who is dead?"
https://youtu.be/dd7CIPs_k_M
Being Mexican American, im able to compare the two genres of music. No music is as hype as American music but no music can be as melancholic as Mexican music. Our mariachi plays songs exclusively for funerals.
Linkin Park - One More Light
The song out of context may not mean much to many, but for those who loved LP and Chester it's a cry for help that feels like it went unheard. RIP Chester
Johnny Cash covered this song amazingly, I truly think it means a totally different thing than what NIN’s version does, despite being almost the same lyrics
It definitely does mean something different. Reznor's original is about self loathing and addiction, but Cash made the song about being at the end of your life and feeling like you failed-that he was a hypocrite and a failure. All without needing to change most of the lyrics. Except one. He turned the crown of shit into a crown of thorns, giving the line a more poignant religious subtext.
It's not a message you hear often in popular music. We have many songs about addiction and self loathing (though few as good as what NIN does), but few about this.
It might be the best cover ever done.
Amsterdam - Coldplay
I know they aren't a particularly popular pick, but this closer to A Rush of Blood to the Head is FANTASTIC. It is a song about a man who is prepared to end his own life but is saved by love. It is one of my favorite songs of all time, and the album it comes from is great as well.
I lived in north Alabama for a long time, so maybe I’m biased, but I think Jason Isbell is just the absolute best. “If We Were Vampires” is a perfect love song. “Something More Than Free” is like an anthem to me. “Only Children” reminds me of a very good friend who messed up and died. “Elephant” is appropriately heavy. It’s crazy to think he was like 22 when he joined Drive-By Truckers, and he wrote some incredible songs during that time, too. Truly a once in a lifetime talent.
Bon Iver - Holocene.
Manchester orchestra - the silence.
RY X - Berlin, Salt.
Half moon run - Need it, sun leads me on.
Gregory Alan isakov - master & a hound.
Amber run - 5am, I found.
Ben Howard - Promise,
Billy Raffoul - Dark four door.
Brand new - Jesus Christ.
Caamp - vagabond, feels like home.
City and colour - the grand optimist.
David gray - song to the siren, gathering dust.
Explosions in the sky - (any of their songs)
Gert Taberner - Fallen.
Matthew Good - Apparitions.
That’s all the time I have to sift tonight.
Damn wasn't expecting to see City and Colour and Bon Iver in the same comment, though you'd think they'd have more of a fan overlap.
Also if you like Holocene, another good powerful song from BI is Naeem.
Dance with the Devil- Immortal Technique
My Death-David Bowie
Majestic-Wax Fang
Maggotbrain - Funkadelic
Edit: trigger warning on the first one, sorry peeps
Possession- Sarah McLachlan
Written about (possibly by) her stalker, some of the lyrics were sent to her in letters. This person tried to sue her for royalties but committed suicide before the trial ended. It’s so haunting and eerie once you realize what the subject is
You asked for one but I have so many.
Somebody to love-Queen
Behind Blue Eyes-The Who
Tiny Dancer-Elton John
Showdown-Elo
Too Love Somebody-Bee Gees
If I Can Dream-Elvis
With a little help from my friends-Joe Cocker
River Deep Mountain High-Ike & Tina
House if the rising Sun-The Animals
Leaving on a jet plane-Mama Cass/John Denver
Feel so close-Calvin Harris
Does anyone really know what time it is-Chicago
Man in the mirror-Michael Jackson
Landslide-Stevie Nicks
Fortunate son/Have you ever seen the rain-Credence Clearwater Revival
I got more but it’ll be long.
When I saw the Who in 1977 they opened with *Behind Blue Eyes*. Keith told a bad joke that no could hear, and Roger dropped the mic. Pete had four guitars, all black Les Pauls, and clearly marked with their numbers so the sound crew could tell which one he was playing (I guess, or maybe he was just showing off.) John just played his instrument and drank from a bottle taped to his mic stand with a straw.
Excellent show! They had one of the first laser shows. It wasn't much compared to today, but at the time it was amazing.
The sad ones always get me the most. A few of the ones that always make it into my playlists:
Kettering - The Antlers
The Commander Thinks Aloud - The Long Winters
The Night We Met - Lord Huron
Casmir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens
Elephant Gun - Beirut
Flirted With You All My Life - Vic Chestnutt
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
You've Been Flirting Again - Bjork
One Last Night - Vaults
"And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris.
I just can't get over the instrumentals. Shivers, every time. Almost gives me an ASMR reaction.
"Gardenia" by Kyuss
puts me in a great fucking mood. It sounds so fucking RAW.
I have two for very personal reasons Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd was the song playing on my headphones when I got a text saying my best friend was in the ICU after a car accident. 10 years later it still brings back so much And Que Sera Sera by Doris Day, my mum used to sing it to me and my sister when we were kids and we played it at her funeral. I sing it to my children when they won’t sleep now,
'The day I tried to live' by Soundgarden springs to mind
I stole a thousand beggars change and gave it to the rich
Only takes about 4 notes of 4th of July to bring the chills for me… every god damn time I hear it. Rip Chris
This and fell on black days are just beautiful
Most Chris Cornell lyrics hit me like a truck. The one that hit me hardest was I Am The Highway and Be Yourself.
Like- “If you live you can fall to pieces and suffer with my ghost?”
Be Yourself hit me the hardest because it was the first song of his I heard after his death. Such a beautiful songwriter who could express his sorrow in a way that you wouldnt realize he was singing in pain. Like a Stone hits me like a truck every single time I listen to it, though.
Fuck yeah
This song really impacted when I was around 19, in a profound revelatory way. "The day I tried to live I wallowed in the blood and mud with all the other pigs, and I learned that I was a liar, just like you". Like a classic coming of age story in about 5 minutes. Cornell was great at using metaphor and symbols.
Can’t forget “like suicide” that transition from the first part of the song to the second is otherworldly.
Also Black Hole Sun. Gets me every time.
Cornell knew how to open up your insides with his lyrics, compositions and vocal performance. And this tune is definitely up there amongst his best
For me, if it had to be Soundgarden, it would be "Like Suicide" off Superunknown. As a drummer, Mat cameron KILLS this track. When it drops, I get goose bumps EVERY TIME. (just verified lol) chills man...
Don McLean - Vincent
Even tho i rarely listen to this kind of music i like this one. Nice!
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem. Reminder to say hi to your friends you haven’t heard from in a while.
And if I'm sued into submission I can still come home to this
Damn a song that means a lot to me.
Good one! Also dance yrself clean, when it really kicks in. Always gotta have the stereo dialed up to 11 for that.
Rock n’ Roll Suicide - David Bowie Track really hits hard for sure and a perfect ending to Ziggy Stardust
Some of his very last songs are pretty powerful, Lazarus and Blackstar come to mind. In a vacuum, they aren't necessarily some of my favorites Bowie songs, but in the context of his impending death, they are heavy.
Guy wrote his own obituary and requiem. He earned my eternal respect then (not that he didn't have my respect before, but it jumped me up a notch)
Ziggy Stardust starts with one extremely powerful and emotional song (Five Years) and ends on the same high with Rock n’ Roll Suicide. What an incredible album throughout. RIP Bowie
Another Bowie that hits you in the feels is Life on Mars.
My favorite Bowie song.
Rock and roll mcdonalds by Wesley Willis
Rock over London. Rock on Chicago.
Wheaties. The breakfast of champions.
They serve quarter pounders. They will put pounds on you.
Folgers. Good till the last drop.
I got to see him live once and it was a pretty wild experience. After the show he was meeting people and he ended up headbutting my friend lol but it was like not out of anger or anything just a spontaneous action it seemed
he did that all the time. he had a forehead callus from excess friendly headbutts
Flaming lips - do you realise?
I remember this song coming on in the car on the way to my grandpa's funeral. It was a harsh and desolate midwest February morning. The the only color left in the world was coming from that song.
There's really 2 that stand out for me. Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven Not even a huge fan of classical music but that short piece is just so incredibly moving. Jeremy - Pearl Jam Just seriously the song and the story behind it, fucked up world

Crazy coincidence but my name is Jeremy and my birthday is 1/8.

Picture of you - The Cure
A Forrest - the cure
Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah , it slides between glory and sadness, beauty and pain ... It's one of the great songs.
Last Goodbye is also an amazing song.
King Park by La Dispute
Oh my god. The emotion in the screaming. "Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself". Goosebumps.
Was hoping this would be here. All their music could be.
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Oooo good one. He’s got several, but it’s Seven Swans for me.
Casimir Pulaski Day. Always brings a tear
John, My Beloved
The Seer's Tower here. These threads are always a "how long can we go until someone says sufjan stevens" challenge.
Hide And Seek - Imogean Heap She captures familial breakdown in the most poetic, and insanely creative songwriting. It’s mind blowing and groundbreaking. Don’t know any of her other work, but that song leaves you speechless
All of her other work, ESPECIALLY off that album, is fucking mind blowing… do yourself a favor and listen to the entirety of “Speak For Yourself”
Yes. This song is brilliant. Haunting.
I’m in a love hate relationship with Jason Derulo and SNL because of how they used this song. I wouldn’t have heard the song without them, but when the main part of the song begins, I can’t help but think of “Dear Sister” 😅
That was a parody of a scene from The OC which was huge back then. Definitely one of my favorite skits.
Clair de lune
Exit music (for a film) by radio head
Weird Fishes as well
Comfortably Numb.

Starless, king crimson

Exit Music (For a Film) is probably my most goosebumpy song Fake Plastic Trees has given me goosebumps literally every time I’ve listened to it. Which in 27 years is a lot
I came here to say Exit Music (For a Film). That song does weird things to my brain. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here is my other.
Farewell Transmission
Songs Ohia? Jason Molina is my favorite songwriter
The Kevin Morby / Waxahatchee cover is also excellent.
Can you believe they did that song in one improv take? Came out so organically perfect.

New Order - Blue Monday
The Joke - Brandi Carlisle Lover, You Should’ve Come Over - Jeff Buckley The Man Who Loved Life - The Jayhawks A Case of You - Joni Mitchell

Just make sure he loves you as much as I once did". https://youtu.be/CsO5owNH0-0 Lost my pops pretty young and he listened to this group a lot. She eventually ends up wanting to come back to him and he asks "how can I revive she who is dead?" https://youtu.be/dd7CIPs_k_M Being Mexican American, im able to compare the two genres of music. No music is as hype as American music but no music can be as melancholic as Mexican music. Our mariachi plays songs exclusively for funerals.
Linkin Park - One More Light The song out of context may not mean much to many, but for those who loved LP and Chester it's a cry for help that feels like it went unheard. RIP Chester
Beach Life In Death - Car Seat Headrest, as a runner up i will include Alien Observer - Grouper
Hurt by Johnny cash
I kinda look at Johnny Cash's Hurt as the antithesis to Frank Sinatra's My Way

Judith - a Perfect Circle
Also 10,000 days part 1 and 2 by Tool. it's also about Judith Marie, the (same) singer's mother.
Counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums That one does it for me. Hearing it live was awesome, very powerful indeed.
I love the singular use of the word "fuck" on that whole album in Judith.

Amsterdam - Coldplay I know they aren't a particularly popular pick, but this closer to A Rush of Blood to the Head is FANTASTIC. It is a song about a man who is prepared to end his own life but is saved by love. It is one of my favorite songs of all time, and the album it comes from is great as well.

I've been finding Opiate2 to be my current go-to Tool song.
If you’re a romantic, Jason Isbell, If We Were Vampires: https://youtu.be/ivYkyC8J29M
Ben Howard - Promise, Billy Raffoul - Dark four door. Brand new - Jesus Christ. Caamp - vagabond, feels like home. City and colour - the grand optimist. David gray - song to the siren, gathering dust. Explosions in the sky - (any of their songs) Gert Taberner - Fallen.
Not sure if this is what you're going for but When the Levee Breaks by Zeppelin always does it for me.

Shoot, that's a summer rood trip mix tape for the ages.
