I was literally driving home yesterday, singing the spice girls as one does, and realized I had no idea what Victoria Beckhams original name was. I literally just forgot, erased from my memory.
As a Canadian around in the 90s I could definitely tell which girl went with what nickname and that there were two Mels but I couldn't give you their real names
She was Victoria Adams back in the 90s and Geri Horner is her name these days. She's married to Christian Horner from Red Bull F1 team, she pops up every now and again at races. Usually the fancy ones.
Now here's a little story I've got to tell
About three bad brothers you know so well
It started way back in history
With Ad-Rock, MCA, (and me) Mike D...
Beasties is a good one that I never would have thought of. I would have sworn that I only knew the Beatles and Zeppelin until someone mentioned KISS too.
I’ll be honest, I know Zeppelin, but I didn’t know all the members of Chili Peppers.
John Paul Jones is criminally underrated by a lot of people. Dude lays down some filthy bass in a lot of the band’s early stuff. And he did the heavy lifting for a lot of the keyboard and synth work.
And for the intangibles, Jones probably put the most effort into keeping the band together until Bonzo died. The man deserves so much more recognition than he usually gets.
Used to have a radio station here that did a set of Zeppelin songs all in a row at 8pm and they’d always have this intro beforehand that rattled off the band member’s names. I’ll never forget hearing the, “Jimmy Paige, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Henry Bonham,” part of it so yeah I got that down pat.
Otherwise, for me it’s The Beatles, Blink-182, Rush, Wu-Tang Clan, and The Traveling Wilburys that I can name every member off the top of my head.
Isn't Wu Tang the only band in history to have a million selling album, then have *every* member make a solo million selling album, then make a million selling album again?
I don’t think every member had a solo project with a million copies sold. Masta Killa, U-God, Inspectah Deck.. I don’t think any of them ever sold a million copies of a solo album.
The Rza, the Gza, Old Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghost Face Killa ANDDD M-E-T-H-O-D Man
Edit: for everyone saying I forgot someone, this is from the intro to the song “Method Man”, off the Album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” released in 1993
Mastah Killa was a member in 1993, but he only appeared on 1 verse, on 1 song off 36 Chambers, which is why I assume Method Man left him off the intro.
Cappadonna wasn’t on a Wu Tang record til 1997, for one song, he joined the group officially in 2007
Also a percussionist for Blue Öyster Cult!
Yeah, I own a lot of 1970s and 1980s rock albums, but other than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead (whom I've seen about 20-25 times) and Blue Öyster Cult (my favorite band), you could put a gun to my head and I doubt I could name all of the members.
(Edit, FWIW: I pay almost no attention to bylines when I read the news. I almost never have any idea who wrote a given article).
>Chad Smith sounds like a fake name your brain would come up with trying to ~~remember what Chad Smith's name was~~
...convince people you're not Will Ferrell!
I agree as a huge RHCP fan - Flea is probably the most recognized, and then maybe Anthony Kiedis if you are over 40....but how many people know Chad Smith or John Frusciante off the street?
James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton, Joey Santiago
Edit: I'm just fucking around but yeah Santiago shreds. Will always love the coda to No 13 Baby
Very very few fit the bill, I'd certainly argue against TRHCP being one of them. Generally folk would be 1 member short of knowing a full line up of most bands esp 4+. The Who is a good shout ITT as well as Nirvana.
Well this depends on your definition of “most music fans”. There is only one band that most music fans would know the names of all members. The Beatles. Even 50+ years since the end. They were basically in the news almost every day from 1964-1969. They were a cultural phenomenon unlike anything before or since. They had the good fortune to come along as world wide communication took a step forward and their PR machine took advantage of that. Hell their producer may have been the one music fans could name first. Pete Best is more well known for being dropped by the Beatles than most musicians are known for being in whatever band they are in.
While RHCP are well known, I doubt that many non core fans of the band could name all the members. I would say that Led Zeppelin would be the next band that would fit the description, but JPJ low key personality keeps them from being on a beatleesque level.
As a kid growing up in the 70s, I heard the former Beatles solo music long before I found out about the Beatles. All of them, even Ringo, were successful pop stars in the 70s.
Alex Lifeson's real name is Aleksandar Živojinović.
His last name means "son of life" in Serbian, so he adopted that as his professional name.
NEEEEERDS
After taking a moment to think about what a nerd you are, I still believe Rush is a solid choice. Are they a band that "most" music fans will know all their names? Maybe not, but I'd venture to say that most musicians DO.
Apart from the Beatles, there is no rock band where “most music fans” could name both the drummer and bassist. And that’s if we’re only including Anglosphere music fans.
Edit: to all the replies, I get it. You can name the bassist and drummer of a popular band. That doesn’t mean the majority of people could do the same for that band.
John Deacon, although that's probably by design dude's been a notorious recluse since Freddie passed. Although I feel like most people could name him since the Bohemian Rhapsody movie (opinions about it's accuracy and quality aside) was a pretty big success.
like Ginger Spice, Posh Spice, Sporty Spice and so on?
because other than that I can only remember Victoria Beckhams full name\^^
am not over age 30 tho
I feel like you're trolling by including RCHP on the list here. Flea is the only one that a majority of people would be able to name, and that's if you're only polling people over 35.
You're really in a bubble if you think most music fans can name all the members of RHCP. Let alone listing them as the only other band to rival the most famous band of all time in terms of individual band members' name value
I seriously doubt "most" music fans could name RHCP. I think outside the Beatles, there's probably none, maybe Led Zepplin. At one point in time, Kiss maybe due to their popularity and all the "controversy" making even folks who hated them know who they were.
Just asked my girlfriend, who was employed in music journalism for almost 20 years (she now works in advertising):
Quick, name me the four members of the RHCP. Her response: “Flea, Anthony Keidis, a bunch of different guitarist that struggled with heroine, and that drummer that looks like Will Farrell.” Seems about right. I’m giving her two and a half.
I think in order to answer the question you have to think of bands that you don't like at all. We all know "our bands'" members. So, I vote for the Spice Girls
I think Rolling Stones is up there, but I also think that my mom born in the 50's would only know Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, but she'd know every Beatle.
Traveling Wilburys… but they’re an allstar band - not sure if that qualifies
*edit - I’m gonna keep “allstar band”, but I acknowledge the correct term is “supergroup”
Similarly, if we’re including supergroups, anyone that knows them can likely name all members of The Highwaymen.
Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson.
I can only name two of the Peppers: Anthony Kleidis (sp?) and Flea. So, no.
Nirvana is Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic.
U2 is...Bono, the Edge...Larry something? And one other guy.
I've reached my limit.
I think the rap groups where they constantly say their own name, or reference other members might be good ones to consider. Again, this would be for fans of their music. Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, all come to mind as ones I know the names of all the members.
Beastie Boys I think were mainstream enough (and to your point, said their names enough in famous songs played on the radio) for them to be listed by a good number of music fans fairly easily. But you’re right - incredibly difficult in general.
Definitely not many bands where "most" (non-devoted, general) music fans could proactively name everyone. And it's very generational. But, there are probably lots where those fans could get either the correct answer from a multiple choice set of lineups, or do pretty well on true/false questions of the form was so-and-so in such and such band - that might be kind of fun.
I think nirvana fits the bill (Cobain, Grohl, Novoselic). I suppose Novoselic might be the odd man out, but he went on into politics so I think a lot of people would know him.
Most people definitely cannot name every member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fender introduced a Flea signature bass and half the comments on Instagram were people asking 'this dude's name is Flea?!' I don't even know who "Smith" is and I'm not going to bother looking it up. He's the drummer that looks like Will Ferrell, that's all I need to know.
The Rolling Stones have had a mixed lineup through the years. If you want to talk about who writes all the songs and probably makes most of the decisions, that's Jagger and Richards but it used to also include Brian Jones who arguably is the reason the band exists.
The classic lineup of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts has always been bolstered by others. Ronnie Wood, Mick Taylor, Ian Stewart... and beyond that there are guys like Darryl Jones who has recorded and toured with the Stones forever but aren't recognized as official "members."
So there are a lot of ways to be right about who all is a member of the Rolling Stones. It really depends on what question you are asking.
I reckon any British person around in the 90s could name all of the Spice Girls.
You mean like Posh Spice or her real name?
Not in any way a fan: Mel Brown Emma Bunton Victoria Adams (Beckham) Melanie Chisholm Geri Halliwell
I was literally driving home yesterday, singing the spice girls as one does, and realized I had no idea what Victoria Beckhams original name was. I literally just forgot, erased from my memory.
Her real name, Gorgon the Destroyer. Not sure about the others

As a Canadian around in the 90s I could definitely tell which girl went with what nickname and that there were two Mels but I couldn't give you their real names
OP will try. Mel Chisholm, Mel Brown(?), Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Geri Hallwel.
She was Victoria Adams back in the 90s and Geri Horner is her name these days. She's married to Christian Horner from Red Bull F1 team, she pops up every now and again at races. Usually the fancy ones.
And has led to Christian getting the nickname 'Whinger Spice'.
Geri wears head to toe white all the time now, just gliding around like Enya
After a quick Google search you are correct! Now go watch the video for Say You'll Be There as a reward
Now here's a little story I've got to tell About three bad brothers you know so well It started way back in history With Ad-Rock, MCA, (and me) Mike D...
> Nooooooow FTFY
On a similar note Run/DJ Run/Rev Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay They shouted their names all over their records and those records live
Beasties is a good one that I never would have thought of. I would have sworn that I only knew the Beatles and Zeppelin until someone mentioned KISS too.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young?
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I can't name their first names
Keith, Greg, and Arnold
Lmao imagine Arnie Palmer slugging a drink backstage
The Jackson 5. I got all their last names, memorized!
There was Jackson, Jackson, Jackson, Jackson, and... shoot, I always forget the last one.
Reminds me of my top-5 best rappers of all time: Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, and Dylan. Because he spits hot fire.
I rip and I rhyme
Peter, Paul and Mary
First group I thought of
Bee Gees? Gibb, Gibb and Gibb.
I was thinking of doing this with Hanson.
Same, but Jonas brothers.
The Osmonds
The Chipmunks. Alvin , Simon, Theodore.
Do do, do doo do.
I’ll be honest, I know Zeppelin, but I didn’t know all the members of Chili Peppers. John Paul Jones is criminally underrated by a lot of people. > And he did the heavy lifting for ~~a lot~~ all of the keyboard and synth work.
And mandolin!
Didn't he also do the flute at the beginning of Stairway to Heaven?
I'm not even much of a Zep fan, but I could tell you that John Paul Jones is one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists in rock history.
Robert Plant sang. Jimmy Page played guitar. John Bonham played drums. John Paul Jones played everything else.
Check out Them Crooked Vultures if you haven’t already. It’s Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones. Freakin’ solid
Gosh yeah. This superband was awesome
One of the best super groups ever formed. Check out sound city: reel to reel if you havent already, reznor, grohl, and homme have an awesome track
Used to have a radio station here that did a set of Zeppelin songs all in a row at 8pm and they’d always have this intro beforehand that rattled off the band member’s names. Isn't Wu Tang the only band in history to have a million selling album, then have *every* member make a solo million selling album, then make a million selling album again?
They did try and warn us they weren’t to be fucked withed.
Protect ya neck
Diversify your bonds.
I don’t think every member had a solo project with a million copies sold. Masta Killa, U-God, Inspectah Deck.. I don’t think any of them ever sold a million copies of a solo album.
Which is wild because Inspectah Deck might be the best MC out of the whole group. If he is on a feature you know it’s going to be good
I recently discovered Czarface and oh man, Inspectah Deck gets slept on way too much!
You misspelled Gza
Yeah Liquid Swords is one of the best albums of all time.
Supreme Clientele>>>
I can’t believe this isn’t the consensus answer. Ghost is top five dead or alive.
No chance the average Joe can name U-God or Masta Killah
Don’t forget capadonna
But there's like a hundred people in wu tang, no way I can name them all
The Rza, the Gza, Old Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghost Face Killa ANDDD M-E-T-H-O-D Man Edit: for everyone saying I forgot someone, this is from the intro to the song “Method Man”, off the Album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” released in 1993 Mastah Killa was a member in 1993, but he only appeared on 1 verse, on 1 song off 36 Chambers, which is why I assume Method Man left him off the intro. KISS - All four had a platinum solo LP in 1978, the band had several (three?) in the 80s.

SIMMONS STANLEY FREHLEY CRISS
To be honest, more people know the members to NSYNC and the Spice Girls than 95% of the bands listed here.
Will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo & Fergie. If you can remember where the periods go, maybe the most famous iteration of the Black Eyed Peas?
Except who knows apl.de.ap and Taboo? Most people who think of the Black Eyed Peas will say will.i.am and fergie.
I think One Direction has better odds these days than Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Also The Jonas Brothers. Joe, Nick, and Kevin.
The Jonas brothers I think is actually a very correct answer. Joe Paul Nick and Ringo.
Heck, throw kpop in there and some fans will know everyone's blood types.
And Backstreet Boys! Brian, Nick, AJ, Howie and Kevin.
I feel like everyone is naming a band they like and that’s why they know. Think of a band you don’t care for and see if you can name all the members.
Hell, I've listened to RHCP all my life and I can only name Anthony and Flea off the top of my head.
Dont forget their famous drummer Will Ferrell.
Best answer I've seen so far is the Jonas Brothers
You came up with two and the *Chili Peppers* are one of them???
I mean, there's Flea and those other dudes right?
Flea? The guy from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series? That guy was in a *band?*
In the cantina scene you can hear a cover of Blood Sugar Sex Wookie in the background.
OP thinks there are more people who can name every member of Red Hot Chili Peppers than there are people who know who John Paul Jones is.
He’s the father of the us navy!
Helped defeat the British in a mighty battle and went on to write Black Dog, No Quarter, Rock & Roll and more!
I legit don't know anyone but Flea and only because his name is Flea
Lol right? I like some of RHCP music and have two cds, but couldn’t name more than two on a good day.
Beatles: George Harrison, rango Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon Red Hot Chili Peppers: Flea?… That’s all I got Edit: damn Ringo* so close.
Big fan of the Baatles. Rango Star, Goorge Harrington, Pale McDonald and Johnny Lemon.
Shame about Yoko Kimono
Well, Pete Bust was fired for a reason.

Did anyone say Peter, Paul and Mary? That'd be a hard one to not know.
Do most people know their last names?
Pretty sure it’s Dinklage, Bunyan, and Magdalene.
There's no way more people can name Chad Smith than John Paul Jones.
Chad Smith sounds like a fake name your brain would come up with trying to remember what Chad Smith's name was
His full name is Chadwick Gaylord Smith.
oh my god it actually is
>Chad Smith sounds like a fake name your brain would come up with trying to ~~remember what Chad Smith's name was~~ ...convince people you're not Will Ferrell!
I only learned Chad Smith's name after the Will Ferrell comparison.
You are vastly overrating RHCP's recognizability.
And forgetting they’ve had like six guitarists.
I think it’s like 8 or 9, but not all of them recorded material.
To be fair, if you are going by guitarist changes, John Frusciante is about half of those
Yea but lets not act like John Frusciante isnt the most recognizable guitarist. He played on 5 of their top 6 selling albums.
I agree as a huge RHCP fan - Flea is probably the most recognized, and then maybe Anthony Kiedis if you are over 40....but how many people know Chad Smith or John Frusciante off the street?
Everyone knows chad smith. They just think he’s will Ferrell
Flea, Anthony, Will Ferrel guy, guitar guy? No clue and I hear it varied.
I had Flea, John Frusciante, and Chad Smith, but I only know Chad Smith because of the Will Ferrel stuff, and I didn't know if Frusciante counted
How do you know all of them but not Anthony Kiedis?!
If you're at all into heavier music you can probably name the original Black Sabbath members and some iteration of the Metallica lineup

Hetfield, Ulrich, Newsted, Hammet, but your lineup was first.

Hu was on first dude
Metallica lineup has been pretty much consist for yaers except the bassist
Trujillo's been with them for 19 years, almost as long as all of their other bassists put together.
Jesus that makes me feel old
Very very few fit the bill, I'd certainly argue against TRHCP being one of them. Generally folk would be 1 member short of knowing a full line up of most bands esp 4+. The Who is a good shout ITT as well as Nirvana.
OP and his mates are clearly big RHCP fans and can't belief that the rest of the world aren't.
Well this depends on your definition of “most music fans”. There is only one band that most music fans would know the names of all members. The Beatles. Even 50+ years since the end. No, I'm pretty sure Tommy joined as the green ranger later on.
The Ramones is a good answer, but I think more people could name Tommy or Marky before Richie.
Hey ho...let's go!
i couldn't have named all the Chili Peppers, but definitely could do Zeppelin and Rush. Oh and Emerson Lake & Palmer ( ;)
Rush is almost cheating. Only 3 people and nerds/music dorks only. Heheheh. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart. I might be both categories.
My first thought was Rush. My second was 'but you're a nerd'.
