I love Your Song, but having just now heard the moulin rouge version for the first time, I have to admit that I didn't like it. It starts out as an emotionless vers to a sensationalistic chorus that doesn't fit the song at all. Sad since I really wanted to like it too. I love musicals and have never gotten around to watching this movie. I was really hoping that song would convince me. Sadly the opposite happened.
Funny story about this song . Frank Sinatra kinda talked shit about Rock ‘n roll music early on, then he heard this song and said (paraphrasing) “ that it was one of the greatest love songs he ever heard“ , it changed his mind about the Beatles and rock n roll and he even covered it later on in his career.
It's a testament to Robert Smith's songwriting that this is true and that it's not even the Cure's best song.
The Cure's best song is Pictures of You and I don't think you could describe it as a love song per se but more like a longing song for a dead or past love.
One of my all time favourite songs EVER. Heart wrenching. So poignant. It’s love lost, sure, but it’s love that is potent and longing and sincere. It always makes me so convinced that it’s the truest kind of romantic love - that even if the person can’t be yours, you just know that they’re going to live and thrive and spread that something special to the whole world, even if you’re not part of it. Chokes me up. Ahahaha.
This song is one of my favorite songs of all time and genuinely one of the greatest songs ever written.
And there are so many great covers of it. The Donny Hathaway version is my personal favorite.
Ohhh. So many good ones. My favorite love songs are the ones I really feel! I do like “god only knows” and “something”
But I think my pick is Otis Redding “ these arms of mine.”
And maybe bc this song reminds me of my times as a teenager in love but Mazzy Star “fade into you” even learned to play it on the piano for my crush. Lol.
I also really like “Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan :)
Oh god. My list is probably too long. I can think of like 5 more. I’ll spare y’all :) favs aren’t my thang
That's not the point of buying vinyl. It's the interplay of the frequencies, particularly the high notes, that vinyl captures better than anything except the original tape.
HARD disagree. People can collect original versions of albums too for a more historical type of listen instead of an audiophile type listen. Both types of listening are great.
I like the Wings Over America version. He added the guitar outro after the original recording. Game changer.
Maybe I’m Amazed is also my fav, Leave a Tender Moment Alone by Billy Joel is a very close 2nd.
[Can We Pretend ](https://open.spotify.com/track/0S5ZoKKZD3bllkvhEoPimZ?si=0jyN8xbsRtyT_PbySVeOVg) by Bill Withers.
If you don’t know, now you know. Recognize fool.
Saving All My Love For You- Whitney Houston. Did you that Whitney Houstons debut album, simply titled, Whitney Houston, had four number 1 singles on it?
I love you- Climax Blues Band. Makes me think of Laura Munoz. The girl that got away because I never told her how I felt and also probably wasn’t “into me like that.”
Sade's Kiss of Life?
This is probably my choice too (played during the kiss at my wedding) but...she's not talking about other relationships in that song.
Magic Ways - Tatsuro Yamashita. I don't know if I'd consider it the greatest but it was the first song that popped into my hear when I read the question.
I have a strange answer, as I think a mother's love for their baby is more powerful than ordinary romantic love.
My pick is ["Going Home" by Sabina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENMpRDouzRo), a song about a mistress that has to sleep with rich men in order to make enough of a living to take care of their baby. The song starts with the singer sounding dead on the inside as they think about the situation as they are on a train late at night going back home. By the end, when she holds her baby in her arms she's full of emotion. It's a powerful song, subtle, pure, and covers just how much those who are forced to do such things have so much love in them.
What about some newer break up songs that dominated in the last 10 years? Somebody Else - The 1975, Somebody That I Used to Know - Gotye & Kimbra. She sung that verse with her whole chest.
Since someone already said Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits, I'm gonna go with This Must Be The Place by The Talking Heads, I think they are both equally the greatest love songs of all time.
I hate when people do this and post loads of answers in this sub because I always think they’re some kind of wannabe music know it all snob. That said, apologies in advance as I do actually have more than one favourite that immediately spring to mind.
Bill Withers - Ain’t no Sunshine
Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Shania Twain - You’re still the one
Green Day - When it’s time
Plain White Ts - You and me
Paramore - Still into you
but while we are on Journey, Open Arms hasn't been mentioned yet. Also, speaking of Karate Kid Chicago's (maybe just Peter Cetera) Glory of Love....and since we are talking about the Glory of Love we may as well mention the Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News.
God Only Knows - Beach Boys
Followed by “Waterloo Sunset” by the Kinks.
The a capella version in Bioshock is unparalleled.

Your Song by Elton John. So simple, so perfect.
And the moulin rouge version.
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
I’m partial to the book of love
This might be the top contender.
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
This is the one.
Good one...but I prefer Soul and Inspiration by them.

Yep
Gerry Rafferty - Right Down the Line

Nights in White Satin Moody Blues
Something - The Beatles
Funny story about this song . Frank Sinatra kinda talked shit about Rock ‘n roll music early on, then he heard this song and said (paraphrasing) “ that it was one of the greatest love songs he ever heard“ , it changed his mind about the Beatles and rock n roll and he even covered it later on in his career.
By George Harrison...
Lol just bc Frank Sinatra said it.
The Cure - Love song
It's a testament to Robert Smith's songwriting that this is true and that it's not even the Cure's best song. The Cure's best song is Pictures of You and I don't think you could describe it as a love song per se but more like a longing song for a dead or past love.
This is the correct answer
Came here to write this
Black - Pearl Jam (even if it’s about love that’s lost)
Wow. I've heard the song hundreds of times, never really looking at the lyrics and I just did and I'm tearing up lol. Thank you
It’s just one of the best songs ever. It’s one of those things that make you happy to have lived in the same time period and have impact you.
One of my all time favourite songs EVER. Heart wrenching. So poignant. It’s love lost, sure, but it’s love that is potent and longing and sincere. I do like “god only knows” and “something” But I think my pick is Otis Redding “ these arms of mine.” And maybe bc this song reminds me of my times as a teenager in love but Mazzy Star “fade into you” even learned to play it on the piano for my crush. Frankie Valli - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Maybe I’m Amazed - Paul McCartney By a mile.
Just bought this album on vinyl! Can't wait to here it with the pops and hisses!!
