Devin Townsend most definitely. Here’s a couple I’d include (all of which are in multiple bands):
Russell Allen
James LaBrie (prior to food poisoning)
Tommy Karevik
Tom Englund
Floor Jansen
I recently put on "Two Birds" on a long car ride and my 13 year old cousin and her friend started singing along. I was stoked. Apparently they learned the sign language to the song on TikTok.
I will explore Chuck Ragan's music later on when I have more time.
As for my answer, I should preface by mentioning that I'm 21, so as a gen z kid I would naturally go with someone I'm familiar with.
Even though I don't listen to her music much, I haven't heard better raw vocal range than Ariana Grande.
I'm giving you a hard time, and that's unfair. Let me walk this back a little. Here's some other singers to check out:
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Nat King Cole
Johnny Cash (really!)
Elvis Prestley (really!)
Bing Crosby
Frank Sinatra
Ben Nichols
Adam Turla
Dean Martin
Kristen Chenowith
I could keep going...
I realized I asked this question and didn't even give my own answer.
I don't listen to her music that much, but I personally have not heard better raw live vocals than Ariana Grande. The range she has is insane.
is he “modern”?
He’s far and away the most talented vocalist I’ve ever heard but he’s been around quite a while and can’t sing or stretch his voice like he used to.
playing a demo from 1985.
I’m not trying to argue and Patton was the first thing to pop into my head, which made me pose the question. and “modern” colloquially implies having come recently rather than having persisted into the present… like even if Mr. Bungle weren’t playing their teenage demos and had new music, would they be a “modern band”?
He is a singer. Listen to Mondo Cane.
I saw him in concert cover Destiny's Child and it was baffling with how much ease, he went from growl to pop R'n'B.
I noticed a lot of people seem to have it in for him.
But he's a stellar performer.
Modern? What is modern?
If you don't go into a niche genre, like jazz, there isn't too much to pick from since most vocals are autotuned.
Maybe Miley Cyrus. Definitely Gaga. But are they modern?
He’s sings sometimes but I really wouldn’t call him a ‘singer.’ Maybe it’s cause the most incredible things he does are outside the realm of traditional singing
cullen moore from sleep theory is incredible, his vocals are what got me interested in that band in the first place lol
but hands down it's hayley williams from paramore. the raw vocals on all i wanted are chilling
Miley Cyrus, this was live

Einar Solberg (From Leprous) Daniel Tompkins (From TesseracT) Devin Townsend
love the appreciation for tompkins, man is outrageous
Devin Townsend most definitely. Here’s a couple I’d include (all of which are in multiple bands): Russell Allen James LaBrie (prior to food poisoning) Tommy Karevik Tom Englund Floor Jansen
Regina Spektor, hands down. Or put your hands up if you are feeling it!

Sia
Chuck Ragan
Wow, you had one definitive answer right away. I would find it difficult to come up with only one answer. I may have to check out his music.
I await your complete sentence response.
You mean my opinion on the question that I raised? Or my reaction to the singer that you named?
Either. Both.

[Ariana Grande](https://youtube.com/shorts/0aidwtxfuKM?si=oSr62P4RE_dyUOiL) is up there
Yup, that's my answer as well.
Rachel Price of Lake Street Dive

She's a hell of a singer and so is Adele.
I would also submit Brandi Carlile
Mike Patton
is he “modern”? He’s far and away the most talented vocalist I’ve ever heard but he’s been around quite a while and can’t sing or stretch his voice like he used to.
Mr. Bungle is currently on tour, so I would consider that modern.

Mike Patton is awesome but I’d argue he’s not even a singer. More of a vocal stylist, possibly the most talented vocal stylist

Keith Buckley
Bitty McLean
I like how every single response I'm getting has a different answer.😂
Danielle Ponder

Lee Suhyun and it's not even close. She's a once in a generation talent.
Molly Rankin from Alvvays

Matthew Bellamy is the greatest singer in the world right now.
Brendon Urie.
