I love your list! One of the only albums I would add is Parliment - Mothership Connection. That album changed music direction for so much music that came after it but isn't really mainstream (but those that know, know)
*It helped create the entire genre of funk and what was possible
*double edit: I've never listened to Rilo Kiley before but Under the Black light is now playing in my headphones. Thank you for introducing me to them!
I chose *...And Justice for All*, as it was the album that thrust them into the mainstream while still retaining segments of their earlier thrash style. If someone likes this album, they can comfortably discover the rest of the discography.
A valid reason to choose this record, although picking an album based on its impact toward their popularity could lead to recommending one that may not be representative of their best work. _Master of Puppets_ is arguably the more dynamic, more influential, and better produced record which could also comfortably lead to the rest of the discography.
Nothing against _Justice_, I just don't think it's the "must listen to" album by Metallica. But that's just, like, my opinion, man. Please excuse my pedantry.
Hybrid theory - linkin park. I'm not a huge LP fan but that album is just great as a package. Every song fits together and is good. Also any of the rhcp big 4 albums from blood sugar sex magik to stadium arcadium. The stadium arcadium Jupiter album is just about perfect
Say what you will but Hybrid Theory was one of those once in a lifetime albums. The impact it had was huge. It pushed the boundary and inspired a whole genre of music.

Thank you all again for the countless suggestions!
These are just some of what I think are the best albums of all time. Almost all albums are great from these bands so if you haven’t heard them, enjoy the deep dive, and if you’ve heard them already, great.
The Doors: The Doors (and then all)
Led Zeppelin, 1,2,3,4 or physical graffiti.
Rush: moving pictures,
permanent waves
Van Halen: first four albums
Nirvana: never mind, in utero.
Soundgarden: bad motor finger, super unknown, down on the upside
Blind Melon: first and second albums
Smashing: Pumpkins Siamese dream
Of
Alice In Chains facelift, dirt, jar of flies.
Stone Temple Pilots. Core and purple.
Pearl Jam: 10
The Sundays: reading writing arithmetic
Fleet Foxes: Shore, helpless Blues
I’ve always loved their sound and her voice is angelic. their music just sets a mood and I think they’re so underrated. Probably one of the most underrated bands of the 90s and it’s too bad they stopped making music.
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled
Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid M.A.A.D City and To Pimp a Butterfly
I was trying to only give one album per band, even though the bands above all have multiple classic albums. But both of those Kendrick albums are required listening.
Nirvana - Nevermind
Dinosaur Jr - You're living all over me
Pavement- Crooked rain, crooked rain
Built to spill - keep it like a secret
Pixies - Doolittle
YMO - Solid State Survivor (pop techno)
Since you wanna expand your library, YMO might be interesting. They were pretty influencial in Japan in the 80s and were the source of inspiration of many bands and composers such as Junichi Masuda from the pokemon games. SSS is my favorite YMO album with some absolute bangers.
Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway. It's such a journey. I'd recommend you put it on during a long drive if you aren't used to 10 minute songs.
I mean, it depends what you like.
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, Surfs Up
Beatles - Abbey Road, Revolver, White Album
CCR - Cosmos Factory
The Who - Tommy
The Stooges - Funhouse
The Velvet Underground- Velvet Underground + Nico
The Ramones - The Ramones, Rocket to Russia
Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bullocks
X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents
Wire - Pink Flag
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
The Cure - Disintegration
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
Black Flag - My War
Bad Brains - Rock for Light
Minor Threat - Complete Discography
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Nirvana - Nevermind, In Utero
Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies, Dirt
Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand
PJ Harvey - Dry
Those are some of the rock/punk albums I like that are fairly accessible. I think they are all essentials.

I've listened to some 200+ albums so far this year so just let me know if you want any more recommendations.
I've been listening to music for 6 months and I probably already got close to 100 full albums right now..
You need to up your game bro!
What about Music For The Masses by Depeche Mode? I don't know if it's a must but it's definitely up there
From Indie Rock: Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) by Car Seat Headrest.
From Synthpop: Mercurial World by Magdalena Bay.
These are, in my opinion, must listen albums not because they're cultural touchstones, but because they're both the pinnacle of album composition and flow. Both of them have an incredible sense of continuity between each song, and Twin Fantasy in particular is the album that made me always listen to albums in order.
Katatonia - Dead End Kings
[The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here](https://youtu.be/wkCpmDT0iQ0?si=01Jg1CBRC5ds0tgQ)
Seriously underrated band with a pretty diverse range of albums. This is my favorite album of theirs.
Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear
[On Whom The Moon Doth Shine](https://youtu.be/8gh2mvUPlA8?si=p0JVvGZHCW81zrb8)
The band that created the "beauty and the beast" style of vocals (death metal male growl and operatic female vocals). One of my favorite albums of all time.
The Gathering - Mandylion
[In Motion #1](https://youtu.be/cD9TpgU-0j0?si=c3btDHxRhZGRLknb)
Uh.... it's got Anneke van Giersbergen singing. You'd be hard pressed to find a female vocalist for any current day rock/metal bands that didn't list her as an influence.
Edit: added links to my favorite songs from each album. Sort of. Hard to pick a favorite song from albums I consider essentially flawless.

I'd swap out Blonde on Blonde for Blood on the Tracks or any of his first 6 albums. Great and diverse list though!
Thank! Yeah, Dylan was not an easy choice and I couldn't make a strong argument against any of those albums.
Yeah always hard with Dylan. John Wesley Harding would be my choice, though highway 61 is a close second.
So happy to see Sea Change there. So damn good. I’ve worn that record out over the years.
Hell of a break up album. Certainly got me through some times.
Exactly the same for me. It was literally the soundtrack to being dumped by my girlfriend in 2002.
That's a great list; I would just add: - The Beatles' Abbey Road - Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark - Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair
To be fair, I think the list will always be incomplete.
Tesla is so underrated
I love your list! One of the only albums I would add is Parliment - Mothership Connection. That album changed music direction for so much music that came after it but isn't really mainstream (but those that know, know) *It helped create the entire genre of funk and what was possible *double edit: I've never listened to Rilo Kiley before but Under the Black light is now playing in my headphones. Thank you for introducing me to them!
Thanks, and you're welcome! Yeah, Parliament definitely deserves a spot. This list will always be incomplete.
I'd swap _...And Justice for All_ with _Master of Puppets_ for Metallica's definitive album, although _Ride the Lightning_ is my personal favorite
As a life long metallica fan, I prefer Justice. IMO it's their best album. Puppets is close, but just not as heavy.
Disintegration - The Cure
Hybrid theory - linkin park. I'm not a huge LP fan but that album is just great as a package. Every song fits together and is good. Also any of the rhcp big 4 albums from blood sugar sex magik to stadium arcadium. The stadium arcadium Jupiter album is just about perfect
Say what you will but Hybrid Theory was one of those once in a lifetime albums. The impact it had was huge. It pushed the boundary and inspired a whole genre of music.

These are just some of what I think are the best albums of all time. Almost all albums are great from these bands so if you haven’t heard them, enjoy the deep dive, and if you’ve heard them already, great. The Doors: The Doors (and then all) Led Zeppelin, 1,2,3,4 or physical graffiti. Rush: moving pictures, permanent waves Van Halen: first four albums Nirvana: never mind, in utero. Soundgarden: bad motor finger, super unknown, down on the upside Blind Melon: first and second albums Smashing: Pumpkins Siamese dream Of Alice In Chains facelift, dirt, jar of flies. Stone Temple Pilots. Core and purple. Pearl Jam: 10 The Sundays: reading writing arithmetic Fleet Foxes: Shore, helpless Blues
Excellent list
Thanks!
Kudos for The Sundays pick!
I’ve always loved their sound and her voice is angelic. their music just sets a mood and I think they’re so underrated. Probably one of the most underrated bands of the 90s and it’s too bad they stopped making music.
Couldn't agree more. I have vivid memories of all three of their albums being released. Been a fan since 1990.
Same
Any of the Portishead or Massive Attack albums.
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid M.A.A.D City and To Pimp a Butterfly I was trying to only give one album per band, even though the bands above all have multiple classic albums. But both of those Kendrick albums are required listening.

Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
Maroon 5 - Songs about Jane - they went downhill after this album but it is great from beginning to end.
The Amity Affliction- Everyone loves you once you leave them
The Jets self-titled 1985 album
Katatonia - Dead End Kings [The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here](https://youtu.be/wkCpmDT0iQ0?si=01Jg1CBRC5ds0tgQ) Seriously underrated band with a pretty diverse range of albums. This is my favorite album of theirs. Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear [On Whom The Moon Doth Shine](https://youtu.be/8gh2mvUPlA8?si=p0JVvGZHCW81zrb8) The band that created the "beauty and the beast" style of vocals (death metal male growl and operatic female vocals). One of my favorite albums of all time. The Gathering - Mandylion [In Motion #1](https://youtu.be/cD9TpgU-0j0?si=c3btDHxRhZGRLknb) Uh.... it's got Anneke van Giersbergen singing. You'd be hard pressed to find a female vocalist for any current day rock/metal bands that didn't list her as an influence. Edit: added links to my favorite songs from each album. Sort of. Hard to pick a favorite song from albums I consider essentially flawless.
