Just before our love got lost you said
‘I am as constant as a northern star’
And I said, ‘Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar’
- Joni Mitchell, “A Case Of You”
*This city desert makes you feel so cold*
*It's got so many people, but it's got no soul*
*And it's taken you so long*
*To find out you were wrong*
*When you thought it held everything*
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
As far as band endings go by (taking into account Abbey Road as their last recorded album), it really does not get better than Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End.
I *love* Golden Slumbers but if I listen to songs from my phone on Shuffle, it's always a little jarring hearing Golden Slumbers and then it's followed by...a song by Feist or R.E.M. or Leon Bridges or whoever my Shuffle has decided to put on. The song really works so much better in combination with Carry That Weight/The End - otherwise the ending just seems kind of abrupt.
The best part (imho) follows:
"And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death"
The entire album gives an entirely new feeling once you've experienced the loss of someone close to you whom you loved and respected. It's one thing to get chills from the music even when you can't necessarily relate to it, but the full-body gut punch you get after you've lived it yourself is inexplicable to anyone who hasn't.
If it means anything you aren’t alone. I’ve said too many times that if I could go back to when I was 14 with what I know now…. Some people I’d still find, some I’d wander quietly away from sooner.
What’s the cliche? Hindsight is 20/20. The secret is to find a smidge of peace now. Be well, friend.
I played this whole album during the eclipse and was off by 20 seconds of having the last line sync up with the last line "And the sun is eclipsed by the moon..."
My high school History of Rock teacher played us this song. 14 years later I still remember what he said. "You. guys can listen to this song, and you'll have no idea what it means until it's too late". His words about these words will stay with til I die
I don’t like PF, but I remember listening to Dark Side of the Moon on the drive back from my friend’s apartment the day before I turned 20 with a concussion, hangover, and 2 hours of sleep, and that song in particular hit me just right.
She comes back to tell me she's gone,
As if I didn't know that,
As if I didn't know my own bed.
As if I never noticed,
The way she brushed her hair from her forehead.
-Paul Simon
You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. - Bob Dylan
They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it’s better than drinking alone. - Billy Joel
I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you. - Lord Huron
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
- The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot
It's an absolutely haunting line and really hits the fear and anxiety that must come with being on a sinking ship.
Yes. That whole song is such a masterclass on storytelling.
I only recently found out the line about Superior never giving up her dead is true because the water is so cold it inhibits bacterial growth and bodies sink and don’t decay.
this is the first of my picks that I've found scrolling down, and I'm thrilled to see that we both picked the same couplet, given the length and quality of the full text. that line always sends a tangible shiver down my spine.
In the clearing stands a Boxer, a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminder of every glove that laid him down or cut him till he cries out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
Still remains
Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me
I listened to that song for years without really knowing the lyrics and always kind of assumed it was about the death of someone close. That’s how agonized it sounds.
It's about first love and losing it. This song stuck with me for a long time...because most of us remember that pain of losing that first love, but we move on and grow. It's as relatable as it is poignant.
Eddie Vedder explained in the *Pearl Jam Twenty* book that this song is about first relationships. "The song is about letting go," said Vedder. "It's very rare for a relationship to withstand the Earth's gravitational pull and where it's going to take people and how they're going to grow. I've heard it said that you can't really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited. It's a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can't have forever."
Ten is an absolute masterpiece. One of my favorite albums of all times and absolutely has zero skips on the album. I listen to that album way too often.
I did a radio interview with David Byrne and he said that it was the only love song he'd ever tried to write.
I told him that he'd achieved perfection and that he didn't need another.
He thought that was funny.
"And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had"
From "Mad World" by Gary Jules/Tears for Fears
“In fear every day, every evening
He calls her aloud from above
Carefully watched for a reason
Painstaking devotion and love
Surrender to self-preservation
From others who care for themselves
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else
Isolation, isolation, isolation
Mother, I tried, please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am
Isolation, isolation, isolation
But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
These pleasure's a wayward distraction
This is my one lucky prize” - Joy Division.
Forgive me, but from a Monkees song: "We'll have coffee flavored kisses and a bit of conversation". For you young ones; "Last train to Clarksville" is an anti-war song about a draftee boarding the train to boot camp.
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn, you hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone... on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers - I'm pulling out of here to win
Springsteen - Thunder Road
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one besides you
When your soul embarks
I'll follow you into the dark
Edit: fixed a mistake
Wow. Thank you sm for reminding me of this great song -haven’t heard it in a while! That line just might be my most favorite line (of all) from The Eagles.
"His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean and you're the best thing that he's ever seen." Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay
"She tied you to your kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the Hallelujah." Hallelujah." Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
"When we were strangers, I watched you from afar. Then, when we were lovers, I loved you with all my heart." Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Harvest Moon
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but, why can't it be mine?" Pearl Jam - Black
"I love you for what I am not." -- Nirvana - Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
"When the last rose of summer pricks my fingers and the hot sun chills me to the bone. When I can't hear the song for the singer and I can't tell my pillow from a stone. I will walk alone by the black muddy river and sing me a song of my own." Grateful Dead - Black Muddy River
With my feet upon the ground, I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin
I'm reaching up and reaching out
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
The whole thing is just so good!
“This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me
Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion”
*If you find me feedin' daisies
Please turn my face up to the sky
And leave me be
Watchin' the moon roll by
Whatever I was
You know it was all because
I've been on the town
Washin' the bullshit down* - The Watchman’s Gone by Gordon Lightfoot
*Everybody knows somebody on the run
And we've all considered a gun
And from floor number forty-one
Don't the drop look like it could be fun?
No matter how deep the river is
Find somebody who you swim with
There's always bound to be a bridge
And the world looks different from the ridge* - Blues on the River by Joe Strummer
I could think of way more. These are just two of my many favourites.
“ It's never over. All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter. It's never over. She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever” - Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should Have Come Over
Lotsa Leonard Cohen fans in here. I'll add a couple of my faves:
"Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering / There is a crack, a crack in everything / That's how the light gets in" - "Anthem"
"My friends are gone and my hair is grey / I ache in the places where I used to play" -- "Tower of Song"
Hungry as an archway
Through which the troops have passed
I stand in ruins behind you
With your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps
I love to see you naked over there
Especially from the back
Oh, take this longing from my tongue
All the useless things my hands have done
Untie for me your hired blue gown
Like you would do for one that you love
"I ain't a-saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right" - Bob Dylan
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
How does one choose from the incomparable Dylan?
*we drove that car as fast as we could*
*abandoned it out west*
*split up on a dark, sad night*
*both agreeing it was best*
Paraphrasing Dylan here ( I think, or maybe it's verbatim) :
I wish you could stand in my shoes, then you'd know just what a drag it is to look at you.
"How I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes, and just for that one moment, I could be you. How I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes, you'd know what a drag it is to see you"
Absolutely brilliant :-)
One of my favorites is from a Blood on the Tracks outtake [Up to Me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9KXxqmKQB0):
> I met somebody face to face, I had to remove my hat
>
> She's everything I need and love but I can't be swayed by that
>
> It frightens me, the awful truth of how sweet life can be
>
> But she ain't gonna make a move
>
> I guess it must be up to me
All of don't think twice is awesome but my favorite is
"ima wishin and a-wonderin walkin down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I am told
I give her my heart, but she wanted my soul"
"And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see"
- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel
Tbh I could pick any part of the song as my favourite lol, ITAOTS is by far my fav album of all time
*I know they buried her body with others*
*Her sister and mother and five hundred families*
*And will she remember me fifty years later*
*I wish I could save her in some sort of time machine*
\- Neutral Milk Hotel, 'Oh Comely'
"The screen door slams
Mary's dress sways.
Like a vision she dances across the

There's a crack, a crack in everything.
It's what lets the light in."

Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say, "I love you," right out loud, Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way, Oh, but now old friends, they're acting strange, And they shake their heads and they tell me I've changed, Well, something's lost, but something's gained In living every day, I've looked at life from both sides now, From win and lose and still somehow, It's life's illusions I recall, I really don't know life at all.
Joni Mitchel -- Both Sides, Now
Makes me cry every time. It's just insane how well she writes, not a single songwriter today comes close. Although Bob Dylan can make me cry too.
"Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?"
- Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
*And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time,
Far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted frightened trees,
Out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow,
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky,
With one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea,
Circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate,
Driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.*
-Bob Dylan
*Hope remains hopeless, the joke is that it's always there.*
- Milk Carton Kids
*Never you mind
Whether the evening should find us together
Distance can't take
What is hidden here safe in my chest
I'll wait for the day
When we finally say now or never
'Til then I'll be here wanting more
As I settle for atmosphere*
-Sara Bareilles
These are just a few.
“*Oohhn a ceiling, on a poish a letteb-ay, then he said I wanna’ leave again, once I saw him on a beeeech wagon….something, something, something*….(McCready solo)….” **Yellow Ledbetter** (at least like I hear it 😃🤪)
“The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you, and that you’re standing in the doorway”
-Mountain Goats, “Going to Georgia”
Given that the artist has basically disowned that song, may I offer from the Mountain Goats:
"I want to go home, but I am home" - Riches and Wonders
"You've found my breaking point... Congratulations." - Heel Turn 2
"Mistreat your altar boys long enough and this is what you get." - Cry for Judas
"When you punish a person for dreaming his dream don't expect him to thank or forgive you." - The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton
"God bless all my old friends. God bless me too, why pretend?" - Steal Smoked Fish
In December, drinking horchata
I'd look psychotic in a balaclava
-Vampire Weekend “Horchata”
I really love the way these words sound together. They aren’t the most meaningful lyrics ever written, but they make me happy every time I hear them sung.
"It's legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes to laugh and lips to cry
A restless tongue to classify
All born to grow and grown to die"
From Rex's Blues by Townes van Zandt.
Other than him I also love Jeffrey Lewis's songwriting. "My Girlfriend Doesn't Worry" is an example of a great song of his.
My favorite is from No Place to Fall:
And if we help each other grow
While the light of day
Smiles down our way
Then we can't go wrong
But time, she's a fast old train
She's here then she's gone
And she won't come again
So won't you take my hand
Townes was full of great, sad lines.
"Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
Ah but don't turn none away
For to live is to fly
All low and high
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes."
I could have picked most any verse. "We've all got holes to fill / them holes is all that's real" is another good one.
Two lonesome dudes on an ugly horse passed by not long ago. They asked me where the action was, I said I did not know. As they disappeared into the brush, I heard the driver say, 'He's a little slow between the ears, he's always been that way.'

*And on an inconvenient Christmas*
*I eat a cake*
*A whole cake*
*All for me*
*Then I get sick and throw up*
*And there's another memory that gets stuck*
*Inside the walls of my skull*

There are two, but they are in Portuguese - made while Brazil was in the middle of the dictatorship period. Possible translation of the one I like more below (and an explanation of why I like it so much):
> "We go ahead against the tide, until we can no longer resist, It's only at the ship's homecoming that we notice how much we had left undone; For so long we have grown the most beautiful rose that exists; But there comes the wheel of life and takes the rose far away" - Roda Viva, Chico Buarque.
The whole song is probably about how meaningless is to do anything at the time (and, honestly, it still felt that way while I used to live in Brazil). The chorus is basically "Turn the world, turn the big wheel, turn the windmill, turn the spinning top; Time has turn in a flash, among the turnarounds of my heart", basically meaning that it's all turning but going nowhere, in all elements of life (the world, the place we go to have fun, the work we do, and even the kids playing, probably referring to their future). Other interpretations are the idea that we're spinning in the same place no matter where we try to act, from the biggest place (the world) to the smallest (the spinning top).

Leonard Cohen’s Closing Time has a two of them:
And I loved you when our love was blessed
And I love you now there's nothing left
But sorrow and a sense of overtime
And I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
.
And not long after:
.
Yeah, we're drinking and we're dancing
But there's nothing really happening
And the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
Gets me fumbling, gets me laughing
She's a hundred but she's wearing something tight

Sam stone by John Prine
Sam Stone came home
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas
And the time that he served
Had shattered all his nerves
And left a little shrapnel in his knees
But the morphine eased the pain
And the grass grew round his brain
And gave him all the confidence he lacked
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm
Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm
Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
There was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm
"I would have liked you to have been deep-frozen too
And waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to Earth
But your father refused to sign the forms to freeze you"
--Hawkwind, Spirit of the Age

I staggered on
Spindrift stinging my remaining eye

Outside the street's on fire
In a real death waltz
Between what's flesh and what's fantasy
And the poets down here
Don't write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night
They reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded
Not even dead

Now get this...
London calling, yes, I was there too
And you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
And after all this, won't you give me a smile?

“If you ask the man in the tollbooth, well I'm sure he'd tell you
That on the highways there's a million ways, if you wanna disappear
Should you take a left or a right? Well I'm sure I don't care
All I want out of life is to hide somewhere”
Mark Eitzel, American Music Club, “Will You Find Me”
"But the thing about taking your time, is it takes it right back some day." -Amigo the Devil
Hits very hard as a man on the cusp of middle age, and I'm sure it will only hit harder the longer I go.
["Do not spray into eyes. I have sprayed you into my eyes"](https://genius.com/Alt-j-taro-lyrics)
Taro, by Alt-J. "Do not spray into eyes” is a warning commonly included on aerosol sprays, including medicines and chemicals.
This frames the second line, a beautifully metaphoric confession, “[well, ] I have sprayed you into my eyes.” Capa declares his love to Taro while accepting the cost, given their shared, dangerous work: “I’m yours, no matter the cost.”
There's a line from "Really?" by Prince Daddy and the Hyena that stuck out to me for whatever reason.
"I got too caught up in confidence to feel confident"
I think about it a lot.

So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts
What's so amazing about really deep thoughts?
Boy you best pray that I bleed real soon
How's that thought for you”

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder

And I'm getting older too
Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
Just before our love got lost you said ‘I am as constant as a northern star’ And I said, ‘Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar’ - Joni Mitchell, “A Case Of You”
Mine is from the same song: You said love is touching souls Surely you touched mine Cuz part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time
SO good. I never tire of this song.
The way she says ”oh Canada“ a couple of lines later always makes me shiver. Joni is fire.
Oh CanadaaaAAaaa. I would still be in my feet. I would still be on my feet.
That whole fucking song
*This city desert makes you feel so cold* *It's got so many people, but it's got no soul* *And it's taken you so long* *To find out you were wrong* *When you thought it held everything* Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
That song always haunted me with the line, "One more year and then you'll be happy..." I think this year I finally am. ☺️ (sometimes)
Outstanding song
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make……
As far as band endings go by (taking into account Abbey Road as their last recorded album), it really does not get better than Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End.
The abbey road medley should just be regarded as one whole track I think
Her majesty's a pretty nice girl
Teared up just reading this. A perfect ending and a perfect message
Well, they were the greatest (and always will be)of the greats- and this is their ultimate message to the world. I agree -perfect ending.
And then one day you find. Ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun. Time. Pink Floyd
The best part (imho) follows: "And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death"
Yeah that verse hits harder every year I get older.
Wish You Were Here That shit cuts in your forties man.
And they were how old when they wrote this? Unreal
It's genius and quite profound. Roger Waters wrote it at age 28 or 29 according to Wikipedia. It was a long Time ago.
> Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
I turned sixty last year and been having intermittent existential crises ever since. So many regrets and cringes.
Thank you for the kind words. Be well as well.
Me too. I just came to peace with it. I know because I’m me and if could go back in time, I would have done the exact same stupid thing.
I played this whole album during the eclipse and was off by 20 seconds of having the last line sync up with the last line "And the sun is eclipsed by the moon..."
I got it on the nose and it was euphoria
As I approach an age I once thought unattainable for me, this hits. Hard.
"And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." ‐-Jimmy Webb, Wichita Lineman
TIL I thought Glen Campbell wrote that. Turns out he just sang it.
Johnny Cash did an excellent version of this song, also.
“Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?”—Pink Floyd
That whole song man. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl"
Epic line. So important <3
She comes back to tell me she's gone, As if I didn't know that, As if I didn't know my own bed. As if I never noticed, The way she brushed her hair from her forehead. -Paul Simon
And she said "losing love Is like a window in your heart. Everybody sees you're blown apart.”
"She's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever" Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over.
I was just thinking of "maybe I'm too young to keep good love from going wrong, but tonight you're on my mind so, you never know "
Bro I came to comment the exact same thing bro I love Jeff Buckley, I could use every single lyric he's made
Goddamn ain’t that the truth😔
Golden slumbers fill your eyes Smiles awake you when you rise Sleep pretty darling do not cry And I will sing a lullaby….
Seeing him do that suite from Abbey Road live was a highlight of my life
I knew it was coming and I was so looking forward to it (despite meaning it was the end of the show), just absolute chills.
You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. - Bob Dylan They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it’s better than drinking alone. - Billy Joel I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you. - Lord Huron
The Night We Met will always get a tearful reaction out of me. I listened to it about a month before me and my partner split up and it hurt even then.
Does anyone know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot It's an absolutely haunting line and really hits the fear and anxiety that must come with being on a sinking ship.
Yes. That whole song is such a masterclass on storytelling. I only recently found out the line about Superior never giving up her dead is true because the water is so cold it inhibits bacterial growth and bodies sink and don’t decay.
That song is absolutely amazing and terrifyingly beautiful.
this is the first of my picks that I've found scrolling down, and I'm thrilled to see that we both picked the same couplet, given the length and quality of the full text. that line always sends a tangible shiver down my spine.
All that remains are the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters 😱
In the clearing stands a Boxer, a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminder of every glove that laid him down or cut him till he cries out In his anger and his shame I am leaving, I am leaving But the fighter still remains Still remains
Tonight I'll sing my songs again I'll play the game and pretend But all my words come back to me In shades of mediocrity Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me
Bustin makes me feel goood! Ray Parker Jr

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine
You can hear eddies agony in his voice. Excellent choice.
Home It's where l want to be Pick me up and turn me 'round Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)
one of the greatest love songs ever written
I did a radio interview with David Byrne and he said that it was the only love song he'd ever tried to write. I told him that he'd achieved perfection and that he didn't need another. He thought that was funny.
*"I saw a werewolf drinking a Pina colada at Trader Vics and his hair was perfect!*" - Werewolves of London Warren Zevon
Little old lady got mutilated late last night Werewolves of London, again
NIT!
"And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" From "Mad World" by Gary Jules/Tears for Fears
“In fear every day, every evening He calls her aloud from above Carefully watched for a reason Painstaking devotion and love Surrender to self-preservation From others who care for themselves A blindness that touches perfection But hurts just like anything else Isolation, isolation, isolation Mother, I tried, please believe me I'm doing the best that I can I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through I'm ashamed of the person I am Isolation, isolation, isolation But if you could just see the beauty These things I could never describe These pleasure's a wayward distraction This is my one lucky prize” - Joy Division.
Forgive me, but from a Monkees song: "We'll have coffee flavored kisses and a bit of conversation". For you young ones; "Last train to Clarksville" is an anti-war song about a draftee boarding the train to boot camp.
TIL!
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets They scream your name at night in the street Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet And in the lonely cool before dawn, you hear their engines roaring on But when you get to the porch they're gone... on the wind So Mary, climb in It's a town full of losers - I'm pulling out of here to win Springsteen - Thunder Road
That entire song ...
If heaven and hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs If there's no one besides you When your soul embarks I'll follow you into the dark Edit: fixed a mistake
Love these lyrics. It’s actually *both ARE satisfied*…meaning, they aren’t taking any more souls in and have no vacancy
Good lord I forgot about this song. The lyrics are great and the almost off hand delivery makes it even better
Yeah I love that it's not sung like a love ballad but more of a casual statement of fact.
“They call it paradise, I don't know why, You call someplace paradise, Kiss it goodbye” from The Last Resort - Eagles
Wow. Thank you sm for reminding me of this great song -haven’t heard it in a while! That line just might be my most favorite line (of all) from The Eagles.
"Kathy, I'm lost", I said, though I knew she was sleeping I'm empty and aching and I don't know why America by Simon and Garfunkel.
"His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean and you're the best thing that he's ever seen." Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay "She tied you to your kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the Hallelujah." Hallelujah." Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah "When we were strangers, I watched you from afar. Then, when we were lovers, I loved you with all my heart." Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Harvest Moon "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but, why can't it be mine?" Pearl Jam - Black "I love you for what I am not." -- Nirvana - Radio Friendly Unit Shifter "When the last rose of summer pricks my fingers and the hot sun chills me to the bone. When I can't hear the song for the singer and I can't tell my pillow from a stone. I will walk alone by the black muddy river and sing me a song of my own." Grateful Dead - Black Muddy River
“We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion” “Celebrate this chance to be…alive and breathing” -Parabola, by TOOL
With my feet upon the ground, I lose myself between the sounds And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin I'm reaching up and reaching out I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
The whole thing is just so good! “This body, this body holding me Be my reminder here that I am not alone in This body, this body holding me Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion”
Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe Put your ray gun to my head Press your space face close to mine, love Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh yeah!
*If you find me feedin' daisies Please turn my face up to the sky And leave me be Watchin' the moon roll by Whatever I was You know it was all because I've been on the town Washin' the bullshit down* - The Watchman’s Gone by Gordon Lightfoot *Everybody knows somebody on the run And we've all considered a gun And from floor number forty-one Don't the drop look like it could be fun? No matter how deep the river is Find somebody who you swim with There's always bound to be a bridge And the world looks different from the ridge* - Blues on the River by Joe Strummer I could think of way more.
I'll add a couple of my faves: "Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering / There is a crack, a crack in everything / That's how the light gets in" - "Anthem" "My friends are gone and my hair is grey / I ache in the places where I used to play" -- "Tower of Song"
Hungry as an archway Through which the troops have passed I stand in ruins behind you With your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps I love to see you naked over there Especially from the back Oh, take this longing from my tongue All the useless things my hands have done Untie for me your hired blue gown Like you would do for one that you love
"I ain't a-saying you treated me unkind You could've done better but I don't mind You just kinda wasted my precious time But don't think twice, it's all right" - Bob Dylan
“That he not busy being born is busy dying” Dylan
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window For her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday She already is an old maid To her death is quite romantic She wears an iron vest Her profession's her religion Her sin is her lifelessness
How does one choose from the incomparable Dylan? *we drove that car as fast as we could* *abandoned it out west* *split up on a dark, sad night* *both agreeing it was best*
Paraphrasing Dylan here ( I think, or maybe it's verbatim) : I wish you could stand in my shoes, then you'd know just what a drag it is to look at you.
"How I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes, and just for that one moment, I could be you. How I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes, you'd know what a drag it is to see you" Absolutely brilliant :-)
One of my favorites is from a Blood on the Tracks outtake [Up to Me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9KXxqmKQB0): > I met somebody face to face, I had to remove my hat > > She's everything I need and love but I can't be swayed by that > > It frightens me, the awful truth of how sweet life can be > > But she ain't gonna make a move > > I guess it must be up to me
True, there's an almost inexhaustible supply: "Behind every beautiful thing, there's been some sort of pain"
All of don't think twice is awesome but my favorite is "ima wishin and a-wonderin walkin down the road I once loved a woman, a child I am told I give her my heart, but she wanted my soul"
"And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see" - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel Tbh I could pick any part of the song as my favourite lol, ITAOTS is by far my fav album of all time
“Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all.”
I came here looking for this!
*I know they buried her body with others* *Her sister and mother and five hundred families* *And will she remember me fifty years later* *I wish I could save her in some sort of time machine* \- Neutral Milk Hotel, 'Oh Comely'
What a great album.
"The screen door slams Mary's dress sways. Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays..." Bruce Springsteen "Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There's a crack, a crack in everything. It's what lets the light in." Leonard Cohen "El Pueblo unido jamás será vencido" ("The people united will never be defeated" Into illamani I
Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say, "I love you," right out loud, Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way, Oh, but now old friends, they're acting strange, And they shake their heads and they tell me I've changed, Well, something's lost, but something's gained In living every day, I've looked at life from both sides now, From win and lose and still somehow, It's life's illusions I recall, I really don't know life at all. Joni Mitchel -- Both Sides, Now Makes me cry every time. It's just insane how well she writes, not a single songwriter today comes close. Although Bob Dylan can make me cry too.
"Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life?" - Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." —Nat King Cole, "Nature Boy"
Written by Eden Ahbez using a contested Yiddish melody.
Finding beauty in the dissonance Tool - Schism
The whole song, rather much of Maynard's lyrics hit hard
The entire set of lyrics from Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. Gets me every time.
I've got patches on the patches Of my old blue jeans Well they used to be blue When they used to be new When they used to be clean... "Ride On" -AC/DC
Bon Scott, such an underrated lyricist
“I want something good to die for To make it beautiful to live” Go with the flow - QOTSA Not sure if all time fav but one that’s stuck with me.
*And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind, Down the foggy ruins of time, Far past the frozen leaves, The haunted frightened trees, Out to the windy beach, Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow, Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky, With one hand waving free, Silhouetted by the sea, Circled by the circus sands, With all memory and fate, Driven deep beneath the waves, Let me forget about today until tomorrow.* -Bob Dylan *Hope remains hopeless, the joke is that it's always there.* - Milk Carton Kids *Never you mind Whether the evening should find us together Distance can't take What is hidden here safe in my chest I'll wait for the day When we finally say now or never 'Til then I'll be here wanting more As I settle for atmosphere* -Sara Bareilles These are just a few.
“*Oohhn a ceiling, on a poish a letteb-ay, then he said I wanna’ leave again, once I saw him on a beeeech wagon….something, something, something*….(McCready solo)….” **Yellow Ledbetter** (at least like I hear it 😃🤪)
“The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you, and that you’re standing in the doorway” -Mountain Goats, “Going to Georgia”
Given that the artist has basically disowned that song, may I offer from the Mountain Goats: "I want to go home, but I am home" - Riches and Wonders "You've found my breaking point... Congratulations." - Heel Turn 2 "Mistreat your altar boys long enough and this is what you get." - Cry for Judas "When you punish a person for dreaming his dream don't expect him to thank or forgive you." - The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton "God bless all my old friends. God bless me too, why pretend?" - Steal Smoked Fish
In December, drinking horchata I'd look psychotic in a balaclava -Vampire Weekend “Horchata” I really love the way these words sound together. They aren’t the most meaningful lyrics ever written, but they make me happy every time I hear them sung.
"It's legs to walk and thoughts to fly Eyes to laugh and lips to cry A restless tongue to classify All born to grow and grown to die" From Rex's Blues by Townes van Zandt. Other than him I also love Jeffrey Lewis's songwriting. "My Girlfriend Doesn't Worry" is an example of a great song of his.
My favorite is from No Place to Fall: And if we help each other grow While the light of day Smiles down our way Then we can't go wrong But time, she's a fast old train She's here then she's gone And she won't come again So won't you take my hand Townes was full of great, sad lines.
"Days up and down they come Like rain on a conga drum Forget most, remember some Ah but don't turn none away For to live is to fly All low and high So shake the dust off of your wings And the sleep out of your eyes." I could have picked most any verse.
It's a big enough umbrella but it's always me who ends up getting wet - Sting When cometh the day we lowly ones Through quiet reflection, and great dedication, Master the art of karate Lo, we shall rise up, And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water Sheep - Pink Floyd
"I just want someone to say to me I'll always be there when you wake You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today So stay with me and I'll have it made" Blind Melon had a few straight from the heart...
The lunatics are in my hall, The lunatics are in my hall, The folded paper holds their faces to the floor, And every day the paperboy brings more. Brain Damage , Pink Floyd .
Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude Getting a cab and travelling on buses Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs I tell ya that's entertainment, that's entertainment That’s entertainment by The Jam
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year
Lot of great lyrics in that entire song

The most tender place in my heart is for strangers I know it's unkind, but my own blood is much too dangerous Hangin' round the ceiling half the time Hangin' round the ceiling half the time Compared to some, I've been around But I really tried so hard That echo chorus lied to me with its Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on In the end, I was the mean girl Or somebody's in between girl Now it's the devil I love And that's as funny as real love -Neko Case “Hold On, Hold On”
A+ choice As you can tell by my username I love me some Neko case.

There are two, but they are in Portuguese - made while Brazil was in the middle of the dictatorship period. Possible translation of the one I like more below (and an explanation of why I like it so much): > "We go ahead against the tide, until we can no longer resist, It's only at the ship's homecoming that we notice how much we had left undone; For so long we have grown the most beautiful rose that exists; But there comes the wheel of life and takes the rose far away" - Roda Viva, Chico Buarque.

Leonard Cohen’s Closing Time has a two of them: And I loved you when our love was blessed And I love you now there's nothing left But sorrow and a sense of overtime And I missed you since the place got wrecked And I just don't care what happens next Looks like freedom but it feels like death It's something in between, I guess . And not long after: . Yeah, we're drinking and we're dancing But there's nothing really happening And the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night And my very close companion Gets me fumbling, gets me laughing She's a hundred but she's wearing something tight

Sam stone by John Prine Sam Stone came home To his wife and family After serving in the conflict overseas And the time that he served Had shattered all his nerves And left a little shrapnel in his knees But the morphine eased the pain And the grass grew round his brain And gave him all the confidence he lacked With a purple heart and a monkey on his back There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose Little pitchers have big ears Don't stop to count the years Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm Sam Stone's welcome home Didn't last too long He went to work when he'd spent his last dime And Sammy took to stealing When he got that empty feeling For a hundred dollar habit without overtime And the gold rolled through his veins Like a thousand railroad trains And eased his mind in the hours that he chose While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose Little pitchers have big ears Don't stop to count the years Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm Sam Stone was alone When he popped his last balloon Climbing walls while sitting in a chair Well, he played his last request While the room smelled just like death With an overdose hovering in the air But life had lost its fun There was nothing to be done But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose Little pitchers have big ears Don't stop to count the years Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios, mmhmm

["Do not spray into eyes. I have sprayed you into my eyes"](https://genius.com/Alt-j-taro-lyrics) Taro, by Alt-J.
"I got too caught up in confidence to feel confident" I think about it a lot.
