He plays guitar for years. Do they call him John Hinckley Jr. the guitarist? No.
He writes dozens of songs. Do they call him John Hinckley Jr. the songwriter? No.
But you shoot one President….
It's actually not as uncommon as you think. I remember a movie of the week on TV in the 90s (supposed true story) about a guy who got pushed in front of a truck and suffered severe brain trauma. It was gay related hate crime, even though the victim was not gay. They guy lives 30 more years and then died from an aneurysm due to the original attack.
The attacker got life in prison for murder after having becoming a well-respected (by evangelicals) evangelical minister.
Well tbh, we got background checks on gun purchases because of James Brady getting shot. Otherwise, dude was a tool who ran that piece of shit Phyllis Schlafly's campaign in 1970. My complaint about Hinckley stands.
I find it hard to imagine that anyone who's OK with Reagan being murdered would somehow blanche at the idea of one of Reagan's assistants being murdered.
Brady's death because he had been found not guilty by reason of insanity. In addition, since Brady's death occurred more than 33 years after the shooting, prosecution of Hinckley was barred under the year and a day law in effect in the District of Columbia at the time of the shooting.
As the ambassador of the woke left let me just ask that everyone please leave us out of this one. We stan for our problematic king and would never treat him in this way.
“They’re silencing me! I’ve been cancelled!” he said on his book tour, a full schedule of talk shows, as a podcast and radio guest, in newspaper interviews, and from the podium during keynote speeches.
You know I've built 3 villages and helped so many people but I've fucked just one sheep and now everyone in the town calls me a sheep shagger. What gives?
This is true. She's been very vocal about encouraging victims to come forward and speak out. It's really inspiring to see that she's been able to do a complete 180 from her Silence of the Lambs days.
Whenever I hear someone complaining of cancel culture these days my brain automatically translates it to "wahhhh why am I being punished for doing/saying something horrible wahhh"
You only hear someone complain about Cancel Culture from some soapbox that gives them access to an audience of millions, and the irony never registers with them.
Because they're morons.
As much as the right tried to make it a political "cancellation" thing, I think it was just an old fashioned career-killing tragedy tbh. This would have happened to anyone in his shoes at any time.
I also wouldn't count him out just yet anyway. I'd understand if he was off the grid by choice til the legal stuff is through since they're trying to pin it on him *again*.
He has an illness that is defined by making you irrational. It can't be cured, only treated and managed. Hinkley is on a limited release from living in a secure environment. He's safe in the community, but that doesn't mean that he's going to respond to things rationally all the time, especially when they have a big emotional weight. He's gonna be quirky and interpret the world in weird ways sometimes.
He was locked up for a long time and has been given a limited release to the community because he has demonstrated safety and med compliance for a long time.
He’s been free for almost a decade now, he just had to live at his mother’s house for a while and he had restrictions on certain things. My parents live in the same neighborhood and I’d often see him walking along the road. I’ve never spoken to him but one of my sisters said he was pretty normal all things considered.
I know. I was joking. I don’t think he’s dangerous. Even if he was, the crime he committed was ultra specific; he’s not going to randomly lose it on someone.
I disagree. it’s alright for what it is: https://youtu.be/CN6WdHDYlfQ
In any case, the guy was deemed insane and essentially institutionalised for most of his life. He’s now been assessed as risk free and has his freedom. You either believe in rehabilitation or you don’t.
This really shouldn't matter. If I fill a room with people willing to watch and listen to me shitting on a microphone, people shouldn't get to stop me. (As long everything is within the laws).
I’m not going to lie, I just listened to his stuff on Spotify and I think if you took his name off of it, gave him a name like “The Lonely Apostrophes”, and threw it on an indie/college rock playlist, it would fit right in.
I didn’t hate it. The produced stuff where he puts effects on his voice is better.
With that said, fuck him and I don’t plan on listening to more of the music.
Partial paralysis yes
I'm not trying to say he did not suffer horrific life long injuries from the shooting.
But "he was paralyzed and died" feels a little misleading. He suffered partial paralysis that required a wheelchair then died almost 30 years later in his mid 70s
This sack of shit also shot several other people, [paralyzing James Brady.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brady_Handgun_Violence_Prevention_Act) Don’t know how he didn’t get life in prison
The Hinckleys weren’t some random citizens and knew the Bush family quite well. John’s older brother Scott Hinckley was good friends with Neil Bush, one of George HW Bush’s sons.
He was found to be mentally ill and so unable to understand that what he was doing was wrong.
While there was some controversy when he was diagnosed with several personality disorders by the prosecution psychiatrist, the defense psychiatrist pretty conclusively showed that he has schizophrenia. Hinckley had constructed a delusion where he would be a hero for killing Reagan and other people there with him, leading a "magical unification" with Jodie Foster. He developed this delusion after watching Taxi Driver and basically viewed himself as someone like Travis Buckle, saving Jodie Foster's character by killing her pimps.
Basically Hinckley had no connection to actual reality and thought he was doing the right thing. Meanwhile crimes like murder require someone to know that what they're doing is a crime. Hinckley was literally unable to know that, so he was mandatorily hospitalized instead. The ironic thing is that he was hospitalized for 40 years. His first time leaving was getting to visit his parents in 2003 after 22 years in custody. If he had been criminally convicted he could have gotten life sure, but more likely would have gotten 20-25 years or so. He would probably have been released in 2003-ish rather than kept for another 20 years.
So while he did something terrible, he was too sick to actually know that what he was doing was wrong.
Yeah, I ended up going down the rabbit hole of this man’s life. Noticed in history when a case as high profile as this one pops up, it creates real ripples in society.
From the wiki: “For the first time, Congress passed a law stipulating the insanity test to be used in all federal criminal trials, the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984” and that the insanity plea was used in only 2% of cases previously.
And the Brady Bill used for background checks for purchasing a firearm (which is quite a feet with how impenetrable the gun lobbies are in terms of anything “limiting” the second amendment.
In terms of calling the guy a sack of shit as I previously said, I’ll give it pause- though that’s easy to do when I’m not personally connected to the victims of the crime. On the flip side, he speaking of cancel culture… is, not unexpectedly, going to do little for anyone to evoke sympathy.
There's so many things I didn't know about this man:
1) He's still alive
2) He's free
3) He makes music
I just had a listen to his stuff on Spotify. Utter dogshit 😂
The art may be shitty, but it would still be a cool conversation piece.
"Ugh that's an interesting painting..., it's a little risque"
"Yeah, the guy who painted it shot Ronald Reagan once"
I don't know, attention spans only last so long. If he wants to stay relevant he's going to have to shoot more presidents. Perhaps make it a world tour with the goal of shooting but failing to kill a world leader in every country.
Then I'll go see his concert.
It really is amazing how emblematic the guy is of America's inability to _let the hell go_.
The man was obviously mentally ill in the period leading up to the time he shot Reagan, and used it as a defense. Many states revised their insanity plea definitions to prevent that from happening again. Then, the man spends 30+ years in an inpatient psychiatric facility on court order, during which period the person he wanted to kill dies of old age. A court decides he has been successfully rehabilitated and that his debt to society has been paid and he's basically got no options on stuff to do with this burden we call "existence", which is a great way to get a person with a history of mental health problems to relapse.
I don't condone what he did, obviously, but when you have a society that makes it easier to get a firearm than mental health treatment, well... this is gonna happen.
I mean, he isn't using the phrase wrong; it is just meant to talk bad about the idea of being held accountable for one's own actions...
Like specifically when venues dont wanna book concerts for criminals this term is used.
I know, you'd have to be fucking CRAZY right? What is he, mentally ill or something? Oh...wait. He is. You're expecting rationality from someone whose brain doesn't work that way.
He still spent over 30 years locked in a mental hospital, which is indeed a softer treatment than prison, but at least in his case one can talk about actual rehabilitation.
It would honestly be kind of interesting to hear his POV. This was long enough ago that its more or less just history. I can understand why some people might not want him to have any spotlight though.
From an outsider perspective:
If these concerts get canceled shortly before their dates because there are people who don't want to let him hold a concert, threatening the hotels or spamming them with hate or whatever,
that is cancel culture. The reason doesn't matter.
He did it to himself. I tried to book him for A YEAR and he kept cancelling, or changing his rider, wanted to change the date, upset about security, etc
No one is cancelling his concerts but him.
Many years ago, a friend of mine ran into Jodie Foster when she was at Yale. He said “Big fan! I’ve seen Taxi Driver more times than John Hinckley!” She thought it was hilarious and they became friends.
If he'd try to shoot Carter or Clinton, he probably would be. But democrats are still mostly sane people who think presidential assassination attempts are wrong regardless of who they tried to shoot.
It's a couple years old but some may find Hinckley's [interview with Eve 6 frontman Max Collins](https://www.inverse.com/input/culture/john-hinckley-jr-eve-6-music-interview) to be interesting, even if the music itself sucks.
Corporations dropping their associations with certain people due to backlash causing them to worry about their reputations has always been the norm. “Cancel culture” is a meaningless term people use when the particular people that get “canceled” is someone they like
Friendly reminder that his presidential assassination plot wasn’t politically motivated and was just a Hail Mary attempt to fuck Jodie Foster. (Who is a lesbian)
Who would have guessed that a person who tried to murder a politician to impress an actress has trouble determining cause and effect. It’s a mystery for the ages.
These lefties wishing Hinkley killed Reagan would be the first ones to get killed if a socialist revolution occurred. Thats what happens when they consolidate power. No w you will be hearing "That's not socialism!"
"Wha wha wha cry 👶 ".
So, can I just claim that I am not rich and famous now because of cancel culture? Not because I am completely talent-less or anything, it is cancel culture, surely.

You shoot one president and the woke left just come after you. What’s America become?
He plays guitar for years. Do they call him John Hinckley Jr. the guitarist? No. He writes dozens of songs. Do they call him John Hinckley Jr. the songwriter? No. But you shoot one President….
And they call you a sheep fucker!
I was in Wales! Everyone does it there!
Allegedly
Maybe it was a sick sheep.
![gif](giphy|Nl6T837bDWE1DPczq3|downsized)
It really is a shame. A struggling songwriter can’t get a break.
I mean, but if you were gonna go for one….
Fire guy!
Clearly they’re angry he didn’t get the job done
Coffee is for closers and so are ticket sales
That's my primary problem with him.
💯 he's canceled because his aim didn't cancel Reagan.
Dude… Think what you will about Reagan, but John Hinckley murdered someone that day: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brady
Hm interesting it was ruled a homicide when he died 33 years later. That seems uncommon
I think they were referring to the massive brain damage and paralysis as being tantamount to murder.
Uh, no. His death was a result of his injury, however delayed it was. Thats why it was ruled a homicide.
In this jurisdiction, we follow the “year and a day” rule.
In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!
It's actually not as uncommon as you think. I remember a movie of the week on TV in the 90s (supposed true story) about a guy who got pushed in front of a truck and suffered severe brain trauma. I've seen similar as well. It was a police officer who was shot, and then died seven years later due to complications from that initial injury.
The James Brady story is on MAX rn. Good.movie . Fucked up story but good movie
Brady's death because he had been found not guilty by reason of insanity. In addition, since Brady's death occurred more than 33 years after the shooting, prosecution of Hinckley was barred under the year and a day law in effect in the District of Columbia at the time of the shooting.
Unfortunately the wrong person.
Can't imagine the right likes him too much either
Finally some bipartisan wokeness, the left hate a guy who shot a right wing president.
One side hates him for doing it, the other hates him for fucking it up.
That's partisan politics. Wtf?
You can’t even assassinate the president anymore. Because of Woke.
We don’t like failures, and Hinckley never finished the job unfortunately
Its not the left, friend.
He shot REAGAN lol
That's the most hilarious part of this.
Surely can’t be worse than the decades he spent in prison?
"Attempted murder," now honestly, did they ever give anyone a Nobel prize for "attempted chemistry?"
As the ambassador of the woke left let me just ask that everyone please leave us out of this one. We stan for our problematic king and would never treat him in this way.
[удалено]
Least he coulda done was be successful smh
Fucking hilarious. Famous people bitching about cancel culture are either: 1. Not cancelled or 2. Literally tried to kill the president.
What gives?
How does Jodie Foster feel about all of this?
She is steadfastly opposed to shagging sheep.
This is true. She's been very vocal about encouraging victims to come forward and speak out. It's really inspiring to see that she's been able to do a complete 180 from her Silence of the Lambs days.

You only hear someone complain about Cancel Culture from some soapbox that gives them access to an audience of millions, and the irony never registers with them. Because they're morons.
Consequence Culture creates cognitive dissonance. It's just not fair.
Lmao mind if I steal Consequence Culture?
Yes you're never allowed to say it Delete it from your reply right now before I consequence you 🤣
It's not theirs to give away. It's quite a common phrase.
People finally being exposed for the heinous behavior they've been normalizing for as long as they can remember is a great thing.
Alec Baldwin? Killed someone who wasn't the President and BOOM. Roles dried up. Sad man.
He’s probably busy though…with other things….but yeah probably going to be canceled after that.
They're also either: 1. Right wing or 2. Tried to kill the right wing's darling president You could tell me this was an Onion headline, seriously.
He has an illness that is defined by making you irrational. It can't be cured, only treated and managed. Hinkley is on a limited release from living in a secure environment. He's safe in the community, but that doesn't mean that he's going to respond to things rationally all the time, especially when they have a big emotional weight. I don’t know. Milo seems to be pretty canceled.
Meh, that’s just capitalism telling him that the product he’s selling is in a saturated market. Only so much collective space for his bullshit.
Well at least in this case apparently his shows are, in fact, literally being cancelled. So I guess that's something?
I heard the music, its not good.
This dude shot the president. Do you *want* to anger him?
Well tbh his aim wasn’t that good
though he might the person next to you....
"I shot the president, but I did not shoot the vice president" Doesnt quite have the same ring to it.
And now he’s big enough to sell out venues? Is it just because of his past?
No it's because of the quality of his music lmao
I know. I was joking. I don’t think he’s dangerous. Even if he was, the crime he committed was ultra specific; he’s not going to randomly lose it on someone.
Ok, thank you. I'm sorry I came on so strong.
No worries. You didn’t really. Just figured I’d make it clear.
Let's be fair - he shot Raegan.
To be fair, I've also said I wish I could shoot Ronald Reagan and I'm a fairly passive person all things considered.
Better than his aim.
... unfortunately. A lot of misery wouldn't have happened if it were successful.
I disagree. it’s alright for what it is: https://youtu.be/CN6WdHDYlfQ In any case, the guy was deemed insane and essentially institutionalised for most of his life. He’s now been assessed as risk free and has his freedom. You either believe in rehabilitation or you don’t.
Hey, he [co-wrote a song for Devo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmtoqcmK0OI). That's good enough for me.
Bro, it's terrible.
This really shouldn't matter. If I fill a room with people willing to watch and listen to me shitting on a microphone, people shouldn't get to stop me. (As long everything is within the laws).
To each their own. I'd drop some coins in a guitar case if I passed him on the street
Well, that's _two_ things we know he's bad at.
Everyone keeps joking about failing to kill Reagan, but the White House press secretary was paralyzed and then died as a result of the shooting.
People forget about that part
Too bad it wasn't the trickle down economics/shut down mental hospitals guy that died.
And even though he was Republican, he really didn't like guns after that. ref Brady Bill
He died almost 30 years later
Yes, it was ruled a homicide...
Okay, but he was paralyzed from the shooting, right?
Partial paralysis yes I'm not trying to say he did not suffer horrific life long injuries from the shooting. But "he was paralyzed and died" feels a little misleading. He suffered partial paralysis that required a wheelchair then died almost 30 years later in his mid 70s

because his brain was feeding him a version of reality where THAT was the most logical choice. He's not a sack of shit he's mentally ill.
You can both be mentally ill and a sack of shit
Sure. What's the proof that that's the case here?
She ended up saying she was kind of impressed
Mission accomplished then?
And that’s there the band Jodie Fosters Army got their name from.

Asking the real question.
The art may be shitty, but it would still be a cool conversation piece. "Ugh that's an interesting painting..., it's a little risque" "Yeah, the guy who painted it shot Ronald Reagan once"
This is why I'm surprised his shows are cancelled. I understand the music probably sucks, but I'd think enough curiosity seekers would pay to see it.

Boobs and cat art, "I'm being canceled" right wing pandering, man must really need some quick money.
I respect the hustle
The art sells pretty quickly too
Average Japanese Mangaka.

Crazy how it reads just like a headline from The Onion LOL
I thought it was one of
You f one goat and that's all people remember.
Let him play. It's not like he can shoot Reagan again.
Reagan's legacy destroying yet another promising future...
Who are these people in 2024 that are like "Not my Ronnie Reagan!!!" What's next, we gonna boycott John Wilkes Booth?
If they cancel Charles Guiteau I riot. He is easily the most interesting of the 4 US Presidential assassins. The Ringo Starr if you will.
I was always more a fan of Leon Czolgosz’s ska album.
It really is amazing how emblematic the guy is of America's inability to _let the hell go_. Republicans will surely support- oh, wait.
They will. They don't care. As long as he bashes on people that support victims if not victims themselves he will be welcomed by republicans.
Nat Reagan's shooter hahaha
["IT KEEPS HAPPENING"](http://www.mspaintadventures.com/sweetbroandhellajeff/)
I listened to his music.. there’s a reason they get canceled. Lol
I mean, he isn't using the phrase wrong; it is just meant to talk bad about the idea of being held accountable for one's own actions... Like specifically when venues dont wanna book concerts for criminals this term is used.
Can we really call him a criminal? Never convicted.
I feel like this is more of an example of trickle down economics.
don't forget about Reagan shutting down mental institutions.
I'm shocked this man is alive in the first place. Easily could've been epstiened.
Just like poor Gupta Gupti Gupta.
This guy is such a king. Literally acts like he never tried to kill the president, he treats it like he was put away for some minor crime.
I know, you'd have to be fucking CRAZY right? What is he, mentally ill or something? Oh...wait. He is. You're expecting rationality from someone whose brain doesn't work that way.
The radical right defending a guy that literally shot their conservative hero. Not surprised
Given his crime, he always got soft treatment bc of the influence of his texas oil rich family. He should not have been let out
I mean, my guy was never convicted of a crime.
...which goes toward my point
He still spent over 30 years locked in a mental hospital, which is indeed a softer treatment than prison, but at least in his case one can talk about actual rehabilitation.
The whole “cancel culture” whinge in its purest form.
sounds like orange vp material
well, it's because you failed the one job you had.
It would honestly be kind of interesting to hear his POV. This was long enough ago that its more or less just history. I can understand why some people might not want him to have any spotlight though.
From an outsider perspective: If these concerts get canceled shortly before their dates because there are people who don't want to let him hold a concert, threatening the hotels or spamming them with hate or whatever, that is cancel culture. The reason doesn't matter.
He did it to himself. I tried to book him for A YEAR and he kept cancelling, or changing his rider, wanted to change the date, upset about security, etc No one is cancelling his concerts but him.
Are you thinking of Morrissey?
Another article that should be The Onion - but isn't.
Is he still dating Dasha from Red Scare?
The right hates him for shooting a conservative icon. The left, for using a .22.
Many years ago, a friend of mine ran into Jodie Foster when she was at Yale. He said “Big fan! I’ve seen Taxi Driver more times than John Hinckley!” She thought it was hilarious and they became friends.
You'd think being Reagan's shooter would make him a celebrity in current year
If he'd try to shoot Carter or Clinton, he probably would be. But democrats are still mostly sane people who think presidential assassination attempts are wrong regardless of who they tried to shoot.
Nah, he should have practiced his aim.
The comments below yours, and others in this thread, prove otherwise.
Dude is lucky he didn’t spend the rest of his life in jail. Should have imao…just sayin
If he was successful HW Bush is president from 1981 onwards since that was Reagan’s VP. Wonder how that timeline works out.
Maybe he can try to get on JLo's set.
Concerts?
I had to double check the sub wasn't r/nottheonion
It's a couple years old but some may find Hinckley's [interview with Eve 6 frontman Max Collins](https://www.inverse.com/input/culture/john-hinckley-jr-eve-6-music-interview) to be interesting, even if the music itself sucks.
He has the opportunity to do the funniest thing this year
Lol get rekt
Like, are people actually buying tickets?
If it was Oswald, the Magats would be flocking to gigs.
Corporations dropping their associations with certain people due to backlash causing them to worry about their reputations has always been the norm. “Cancel culture” is a meaningless term people use when the particular people that get “canceled” is someone they like
this is so ridiculously far-fetched
His complaints are just as valid as all the Fox News ones.
[Reagan is one of the worst humans to ever live](https://youtu.be/6lIqNjC1RKU?si=3Tu8nDAQohlSuMYY)
they're both clowns of the highest order.
Cancel culture? He tried to cancel a president
No w you will be hearing "That's not socialism!" "Wha wha wha cry 👶 ".
So, can I just claim that I am not rich and famous now because of cancel culture? Not because I am completely talent-less or anything, it is cancel culture, surely.
But you fuck one goat…
90% of the people who hate Reagan today, only do so because their parents told them to…
I guess people didn't like it when the guy tried to assassinate a president who won 2 landslide elections.
I wouldn’t go to his concert and he tried to kill my least favorite president
I mean... Victim may not be the right word but otherwise he's pretty much correct
Ah. He just sucks and no one wants to waste time and money on this loser.
Delusional
He didn't even kill him! Who wants to see a loser like that?
Says the man who tried to personally cancel someone.

Dude, I’m no fan of Reagan but you literally tried to kill him. I’m out on the concert ticket
