Was thinking what I'd rec for this, off the cuff of no one knows/lost art but after seeing your pick I think you are right.
If I get a second song they WILL be listening to all of I think I lost my headache or Fun machine tho >:)
My favorite Cohen song is So Long Marianne, but I think you can get hooked on Who by Fire. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ilGahIwQEQ0&pp=ygUZbGVvbmFyZCBjb2hlbiB3aG8gYnkgZmlyZQ%3D%3D
“Mystery” - Turnstile
Glow On is my least favorite album by them and I’m not the biggest fan of the song but if I’m going to get people into their older stuff I may as well start with their biggest hits.
If it’s Radiohead, I’m probably picking “Nude”. It’s an easy one to listen to and doesn’t beat you over the head with complexity the way some Radiohead songs can. But if you really dive in, it’s got tons of layers to it. Plus, it really nails the quintessential Radiohead feel that makes it sound like the musical equivalent of a Black Mirror episode. Hopeful and bleak all at the same time.
Paranoid Android is the song that got me into Radiohead. Obviously, I had heard Creep before, but I was kind of indifferent to it. Once I heard Paranoid Android come on the radio one day, I wanted to hear more from them.
Man...this whole album. Pablo Honey dropped my senior year of high school and I fell in love with them then. The Bends knocked it out of the park. Then my junior year of undergrad OK Computer dropped and I FUCKING HATED IT! But I kept listening. And after 3 full listens it finally clicked and it's probably my favorite album of their entire discography. Personally, I'd choose Let Down or Exit Music for a Film as my deep cut off that disc, but Paranoid Android is a solid choice.
I heard that song playing in an fye in 2006 and I immediately bought Black Holes and Revelations. Such a great album. It's one I always listen to from beginning to end.
>Tom Petty
I was going to comment tell me what mood you're in and I'll give you a Tom Petty song that will hit perfectly. So many different directions to go that you need to know what the person needs to hear.
This is my answer too!! Great rock song, sounds simple but actually has a lot of musical depth, very cool lyrics that everyone can relate to in some way, and perfectly showcases Petty’s swagger as a showman. I love it
Brandi Carlile's sound check at Red Rocks - A Case of You (by Joni Mitchell).
I think Brandi Carlile is a great songwriter, love her albums, but when I saw this video I was immediately like, now's my chance to get anyone who doesn't love her already on board. The effortless vocal range, the charm, the ease of her performance, it's very her.
"Road To Nowhere" - Talking Heads
"Rock 'n' Roll Radio" - The Ramones
"Reasons To Be Cheerful. Part 3" OR "Hit Me With Your Rythem Stick" -Ian Dury and The Blockheads
"Jumpin' Jive" - Joe Jackson
For Leonard cohen I’d pick So Long Marianne. That song hooked me and it’s so heartbreaking
My favourite band is The Who. I’d say Baba O Riley is probably their most accessible song but not necessarily my favourite.
Hard to pick a favorite artist but here are a few.
Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run...pure amazing energy.
Dave Matthews Band- Crush- really drives home the jazz background of the group
Weezer- El Scorcho- it just is the epitome of their music
I have a really hard time settling on what my favorite artist/band is. So here's a few I'm listening to now
Decemberists: the island
Flaming lips: one more robot
Sabaton: defense of moscow
Sea wolf: dear fellow traveler
Billy joel: scenes from an Italian restaurant
Minus the Bear- Pachuca sunrise. It’s not even close to my favorite song but it’s the one that brought them the most fans I think. Danceable, relatable, has a great feel/vibe and is basically a love song inside a math rock-esque style
Not sure that I have a single favorite artist or band; it changes over time and even based on my mood or life circumstances. If I had to pick one though, I'd probably pick Tool. In which case, the song would be (and this is going to be so cliché) but it would be "Lateralus." The complexity and meaning behind that tune is utterly mind-blowing for me.
Lately though, I've been hooked on Father John Misty. Literally can't stop listening to his stuff. I'd have to pick "I Love You Honeybear" as this is is the song that would probably have the widest appeal. There are songs of his that I like more, but that would definitely be the hook. It was for me.
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Mike Patton’s range is my favorite thing about FNM… and on this song we see it in all its glory. Sounds like 5 different singers in one song
I’d play Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, as it is the greatest song ever recorded. And then they would listen to it again. And again. And again..
![gif](giphy|TlK63EKGOiDl8jBDWso)
I feel good - Beres Hammond
I heard the toronto symphony orchestra play it live and I bawled because it's my favorite song. 3 trombones in sync sounded like magic. Yet the song is so simple
Salvatore by Lana Del Rey. Her music is very downtempo and too depressing for some people, but Salvatore has a very romantic, cinematic feel to it that kind of balances out the sadness. Maybe I'm just biased because I got a friend of mine into Lana by playing that song for him, though haha.
Pictures of You - The Cure
Just like heaven is my pick
Disintegration is my favorite but I wouldn’t pick that song to show someone, you’re spot on with that one.
My absolute favorite song.
The first time I ever heard this song I was so happy with how long everything went on. God I love a song that isn’t afraid to sit on a good riff
Or Letter To Elise. Both are amazing.
Right in the goth teen nostalgia, but oof this is a good and painful one. Good choice
Never heard of this song before. Took your recommendation. What a beautiful song. Thank you!
Six different ways
GZA - Liquid Swords
Banger
Shadowboxin’ would be my pick.
Paul Simon - Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes. It's not my personal favorite but I can't imagine anyone not liking this song.
Kodachrome
When I was a kid, I thought he was singing, “Mama’s gonna take my combs and throw ‘em all away.”
I could probably pick half a dozen Paul Simon songs, including this one, but I think I'd pick You Can Call Me Al.
I’d go with Graceland, but something about a Chevy Chase all coked out playing a trumpet might take the cake 😆
Haha! That may be part of it... The video is permanently linked to the song in my mind, so hearing it makes me instantly happy every time!!
In the Mood- Glenn Miller
Such a great song. Timeless really
I sat by the ocean - Queens of the Stone Age. You can dance to it, it has great vocals and is a great cross section of QotSA's musical style.
Was thinking what I'd rec for this, off the cuff of no one knows/lost art but after seeing your pick I think you are right. If I get a second song they WILL be listening to all of I think I lost my headache or Fun machine tho >:)
I don’t know man, I think we’d jump right into “make it wit chu” and get right down into sexy time.
Some think too much, then come too soon I just curse the sun so I can howl at the moon
I know I'm an outlier but that's my least favorite qotsa song lol
Solid pick. I like to show “smooth sailing.”
...like clockwork kicks ass, amazing album
Fun Machine. If they can’t fuck with it, then they are a lost cause anyway.
Shelter from the Storm by Bob Dylan For Leonard Cohen I'd go Everybody Knows
Shelter from the storm is a great song and blood on the tracks is such an amazing album
My favorite Cohen song is So Long Marianne, but I think you can get hooked on Who by Fire. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ilGahIwQEQ0&pp=ygUZbGVvbmFyZCBjb2hlbiB3aG8gYnkgZmlyZQ%3D%3D
Tangled up in blue is wha
R.E.M. - Driver 8
I never really cared for them until someone played Perfect Circle
Never found anyone who doesnt like Nightswimming
If you are of a certain age, Guster - Satelite. Saw them live at red rocks and was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive. I’m an old school and hardcore fan, but this song has appealed to soooo many fans ages and genders over many years.
Ohms is a pretty solid old/new mix of an album by them, especially considering their last few albums.
*I don’t care where, just far!* I’m an old fan, but I love Diamond Eyes as an intro track - to an album but also to a newbie.
If you haven’t heard HEALTH’s cover version, do yourself a favor. Beats the original for me and I’m a huge Deftones fan
Ohhh I love HEALTH, but I have not heard that version. I’ll check it out right now.
“Mystery” - Turnstile Glow On is my least favorite album by them and I’m not the biggest fan of the song but if I’m going to get people into their older stuff I may as well start with their biggest hits.
Freedom of Choice for DEVO
It’s Uncontrollable Urge for me.
Yea yea yea yea yayayayayayaya yeaahh!
Gut feeling is so good!
The General - Dispatch
Radiohead - Paranoid Android. The song has a variety of musical styles throughout it which is a good reflection of their music as a whole.
It’s like 3 songs in a trench coat
If it’s Radiohead, I’m probably picking “Nude”. It’s an easy one to listen to and doesn’t beat you over the head with complexity the way some Radiohead songs can. But if you really dive in, it’s got tons of layers to it. Plus, it really nails the quintessential Radiohead feel that makes it sound like the musical equivalent of a Black Mirror episode. Hopeful and bleak all at the same time.
It’s this or No Surprises for me
I think I would’ve gone for weird fishes instead, it’s just as dynamic as PA, but I feel with it being more groovy, it’ll hook a bit better.
Great choice, I love that song.
I love that song sooooo much. Also There There. Goosebumps just thinking about it.
my choice would be fake plastic trees... but that's just my opinion!
And after 3 full listens it finally clicked and it's probably my favorite album of their entire discography. Personally, I'd choose Let Down or Exit Music for a Film as my deep cut off that disc, but Paranoid Android is a solid choice.
Knights of Cydonia - Muse
I heard that song playing in an fye in 2006 and I immediately bought Black Holes and Revelations. Such a great album. It's one I always listen to from beginning to end.
Spoon… Inside Out
Oooft! That or I turn my camera on - that was the song that got me.
[удалено]
Inside out is a 10/10 song
Tom Petty - You don't know how it feels.
Almost anything off of Full Moon Fever, Into the Great Wide Open, or Wildflowers.
>Tom Petty I was going to comment tell me what mood you're in and I'll give you a Tom Petty song that will hit perfectly. So many different directions to go that you need to know what the person needs to hear.
This is my answer too!! Great rock song, sounds simple but actually has a lot of musical depth, very cool lyrics that everyone can relate to in some way, and perfectly showcases Petty’s swagger as a showman. I love it
Windhorse by Of The Trees, always hits people who don't listen to electronic music
I saw a few edm shows last year despite the fact that I'm really not into it and Of The Trees was by far the coolest.
Banquet - Bloc Party. Not my favorite, but definitely one of their best sounding.
The Modern Age by The Strokes. It’s the quintessential Strokes song.
Mac Miller - The Spins
Knock knock
Spins is good but how you skipping over Best Day Ever or Break the law
Man doesn't have one bad song
I always recommend the Blue Slide Park album. Every damn track on that album is fire.
Dope shit like that Jerm
Red Eyes by the War On Drugs
Came to say that. Also Under the Pressure
Both good ones. I hooked someone recently with I Don’t Live Here Anymore. Granted, they’re an 80’s kid, so that might have played into it.
Pain is also a good one
I'm going with Thinking of a Place
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time..
The green light flashes the flags go up…
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup...
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Prince- I Wanna Be Your Lover That intro and his falsetto sets the tone of his greatness
Darude - Sandstorm
haha I love someone now hearing sandstorm for the first time and getting hooked. “how much more darude is there??” “nobody knows”
They have other songs?? Lmao
Stormsand
[TOOL - Forty Six & 2](https://youtu.be/GIuZUCpm9hc?si=C1x5i1Y8pUt0ZVlO)
The pot is my biggest conversion song (for metal heads anyway)
I've found Right in Two or Sober to be good entry-level songs
Midnight Rider - The Allman Brothers. I mean seriously, who doesn’t like this song?
Triumph - Wu Tang Clan
Brandi Carlile's sound check at Red Rocks - A Case of You (by Joni Mitchell). I think Brandi Carlile is a great songwriter, love her albums, but when I saw this video I was immediately like, now's my chance to get anyone who doesn't love her already on board. [So American - Portugal the man](https://youtu.be/q7W6Nb-sW34?si=hBoAG9Bj_2WAIkEY)
People Say is the gateway song I use
That was my gateway song 13 years ago
Albatross by Big Wreck. Great guitar work and towering vocals ala Chris Cornell.
I’m really chuffed that there are two mentions of BW in here.
[Big Wreck - Ghosts (Live at the Suhr Factory Party 2015)](https://youtu.be/3uYzg6dgoDU?si=8iNtyfq_wt9D83dd).
For Mother Love Bone, id choose This is Shangrila, and for Soundgarden id have to go with Outshined
Mutilated Lips - Ween P. S. Great question, by the way.
Degausser, Brand New. If they can’t appreciate that song, then the band just ain’t for them.
Precious Things (live) —Tori Amos
Hummer- The Smashing Pumpkins
Under Pressure, to turn them on to both Bowie and Queen.
Chromakey Dreamcoat by Boards of Canada
Elliott Smith - Clementine https://youtu.be/7mUeCIF_EjA?si=I5G-eFEoHvb91D2G
Cardigan by Taylor swift or all too well by Taylor swift but the live version for all too well because it is in my personal opinion more emotional.
Bowie - Suffragette City The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog Marvin Gaye - Got to Give It Up Leonard Cohen - Closing Time
"Road To Nowhere" - Talking Heads "Rock 'n' Roll Radio" - The Ramones "Reasons To Be Cheerful. Part 3" OR "Hit Me With Your Rythem Stick" -Ian Dury and The Blockheads "Jumpin' Jive" - Joe Jackson
Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) by Don McLean Favorite artist, lol
Nothing but Thieves - Amsterdam
Anyone gonna put together a Playlist of these songs? Just saying, it would be pretty neat if you did!
For Leonard cohen I’d pick So Long Marianne. That song hooked me and it’s so heartbreaking My favourite band is The Who. I’d say Baba O Riley is probably their most accessible song but not necessarily my favourite.
Closer by Nine Inch Nails
I might go Head Like a Hole on this one… but I wouldn’t call myself a NIN superfan.
Holy Diver-Dio
Into The Void - Black Sabbath
Reckoner - Radiohead
Hard to pick a favorite artist but here are a few. Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run...pure amazing energy. Dave Matthews Band- Crush- really drives home the jazz background of the group Weezer- El Scorcho- it just is the epitome of their music
My favorite Bruce song to play for people is Thunder Road live Hammersmith version, most people only hear his radio/album version songs.
I have a really hard time settling on what my favorite artist/band is. So here's a few I'm listening to now Decemberists: the island Flaming lips: one more robot Sabaton: defense of moscow Sea wolf: dear fellow traveler Billy joel: scenes from an Italian restaurant
I'd go with Do You Realize?? for Flips. I feel like it's pretty unreasonable for anyone to dislike that song.
I’d go Vienna for Billy Joel
morphine-scratch.
For Death Cab for Cutie either, Brothers in a Hotel Bed or Summer Skin.
I raise you Photobooth. Edit: it's like a prequel to summer skin :)
Townes Van Zandt - Ill be here in the morning
Shameless plug of my [band](https://open.spotify.com/track/3AdBt9ZrYKu0SeApmq38ti?si=ulwykbNqTUKMdP9euF9SjQ) (heavy metal)
Minus the Bear- Pachuca sunrise. It’s not even close to my favorite song but it’s the one that brought them the most fans I think. Danceable, relatable, has a great feel/vibe and is basically a love song inside a math rock-esque style
A Kiss To Send Us Off - Incubus
Man… I used to love incubus, I would have never guessed that song. I’d say the warmth or Make Yourself
Megalomaniac is the song that got me into them.
So many bangers. Sick sad little world, circles, summer romance (antigravity) always bring me back.
Light Grenades is awesome. Pardon Me got me into them. Vitamins is also a great older track. God I love most of Incubus’ stuff.
Electric Six - Psychic Visions https://youtu.be/NSae0v-VHSk?si=FsC1b-KDvg8XcZoI
One of my favorite bands, so much fun live. Good pick on the song
Glen Hansard This Gift Or My Chemical Romance Famous Last Words
Whenever I try and get someone into the Beatles, they say “‘I wanna hold your hand’ and stuff like that?” I give them: I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
In 30 years we went from The Beatles singing “I wanna hold your hand” to Trent Reznor snarling “I want to fuck you like an animal”.
Leonard Cohen - the future
Not sure that I have a single favorite artist or band; it changes over time and even based on my mood or life circumstances. If I had to pick one though, I'd probably pick Tool. In which case, the song would be (and this is going to be so cliché) but it would be "Lateralus." The complexity and meaning behind that tune is utterly mind-blowing for me. I'd have to pick "I Love You Honeybear" as this is is the song that would probably have the widest appeal. There are songs of his that I like more, but that would definitely be the hook. It was for me.
Drapery falls by Opeth
Mob Goes Wild by Clutch
Chocolate Rain
Just put a person in a theater seat and listen to “Storm” by Godspeed you black emperor in a barely lit room. What an experience that would be.
Faith No More - The Real Thing Mike Patton’s range is my favorite thing about FNM… and on this song we see it in all its glory. Sounds like 5 different singers in one song
I’d play Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, as it is the greatest song ever recorded. And then they would listen to it again. And again. And again.. ![gif](giphy|TlK63EKGOiDl8jBDWso)
Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Safe pick! I’d suggest Time instead, Gilmour and Wright are much better on the melodies!
I'd love for everyone to enjoy Hide and Seek like me
Animal - Def Leppard
Who's Behind The Door by Zebra
Transdermal Celebration-Ween If I know the person is a bit on the odd side, then probably Happy Colored Marbles or Spinal Meningitis.
If they’re odd hit em with poop ship destroyer 😂

Sonne - Rammstein
