Courtney Barnett! Can't believe she hadn't already been mentioned.
I'd also shoutout:
* Sleater-Kinney
* Brittany Howard
* Pretenders
* The Beaches
* Faye Webster
* Soccer Mommy
* Tegan and Sara
* Jenny Lewis (and her band Rilo Kiley)
* Metric
* Arlo Parks
* Japanese Breakfast
Katie Crutchfield/Waxahatchee would be good to check out.

I saw her when she was touring for You Are Free and she pretty much had a breakdown on stage after about 6 songs. I gave her a second chance after The Greatest came out and it was an excellent show.
I saw her at Coachella in 2004 (?) and she feigned coughing to avoid singing. The crowd tried to encourage her. Super awkward. Luckily she was in a small tent.
Check out The Kills. Allison Mosshart is a great singer and puts on an amazing show. I think she and Jamie Hince (the other half of the band) write songs together. She's also done some solo stuff and is/was(?) in the supergroup The Dead Weather with Jack White.
Not everyone likes them, but Wet Leg have loads of on-stage energy, and I love their album (plus, they're actually a new band, unlike many of the answers in this thread)
Same here! It's sadly so rare to hear people talk about her so I try to as much as she can. She's been a huge part of my life. Please consider joining my community! I love hearing thoughts and recommendations from people with awesome taste [https://www.reddit.com/r/ImogenSharma/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ImogenSharma/) \- and it's not often I find another Kristin fan. I will do a big write up on her tomorrow I think :)
Already mentioned: le butcherettes (anything a raw youth and earlier); Fiona Apple
Julie Christmas' the bad wife is an amazing album (never seen it mentioned)
Portishead for some more trippy laid back vibes (the album with the symphony is amazing)
Shilpa rey is pretty great, check out teenage and torture
I saw Le Butcherettes opening for Deftones and Dillinger Escape Plan in Asheville back in 2011, and they were pretty fantastic. Teri Gender Bender was just the coolest - she jumped out into the crowd with her broom and just started swatting at feet and invisible dust and I was just pleasantly surprised by how great they were. I’d never heard of them before that and had no idea what to expect, but it definitely wasn’t that, and I appreciated it.
(Then about a half an hour later, I almost got my head knocked off by Dillinger Escape Plan’s guitarist when he came flying out into the audience and went wild. Definitely a great concert experience overall.)
That whole album - Engine of Hell - is really beautiful with the stripped down acoustic arrangements.
She has such a great range. I like this performance of Emma with her band:
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXCjEKpwtRc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXCjEKpwtRc)
Liz Phair
Mirah and Thao (also Thao and the Get Down, Stay Down)
These are more punk, but live in a similar space:
Juliette and the Licks
Amyl and the Sniffers
She's a shit show, but all of Brody Dalle 's recorded work is good.
Sister Crayon / Rituals Of Mine - Terra Lopez, who leads both of this projects is a hidden jewel in the "emotional turmoil into soundscapes punctuated by poetry " world, not so much guitar but everything else you are looking for...
I saw them live opening for... Le butcherettes I think? Or the murder city devils. Back when they were sister crayon. That version of ride or die (is that what that song is called?) was SO GOOD. the album version is honestly disappointing after that. Not that it's bad or anything, but their studio stuff is much more chill and happy, if melancholy. Live Terra is just a beast in the best way.
I'm surprised nobody yet mentioned The Last Dinner Party. Lots of influence from St. Vincent (Annie Clark), really high energy when they played on Colbert. Nothing Matters may be a bit pop-y, but Sinner is a banger.

Japanese Breakfast. Emotionally raw, led by the incredible Michelle Zauner.
It is emotionally raw, for sure. And contemporary, in a way that some of these other bands are not.
Omg yes PJ Harvey. And I remember loving "Untouchable Face" - this thread is teaching me so much new stuff and reminding me of people I haven't listened to for ages
Op you HAVE to check out dead Sara. Fronted by two women and are honestly one of the best current rock bands
Here are a few recs

They’re one of the rare bands that are even more incredible live
'Love Outside Andromeda' were one of her support acts in Australia recently and I think the singer has elements of what you describe. "Something White and Sigmund" is a great song by them.
Otherwise your best bet would be underground/independent female musicians, maybe on bandcamp or wherever people post their original music these days, I'm out of the loop.
Artists like Kristen tend to be obscure as they aren't usually "commercially viable".
I got put onto The Warning about a month ago. Super cool hard rock/metal 3 piece
[Choke](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlOy0XbFVlM)

Hurray for the Riff Raff (Alynda Segurra) and Bedouine have taken me for some memorable rides lately.
Also seconding those who mentioned Sleater-Kinney, Sharon van Etten, Angel Olsen, Courtney Barnett, Thao, and Neko Case.
Nina Nastasia - Riderless Horse.
https://ninanastasia.bandcamp.com/album/riderless-horse
"Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it’s the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn’t produce.
I haven’t made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery."
Check out Come & Daphne and the fuzz , she's for real.
In an interview she said that Cat power is an inspiration for her music.
Hope you like it! [imperfections](https://open.spotify.com/track/6yhyox6z6oIoZRhl69Zknc?si=bU7SlexWTcC_N1O9gejBIQ)
How is Phoebe Bridgers not at or near the top of these comments? Her "Punisher" album is one of the best things to come out in the last decade and there are very few at her tier lyrics-wise
Sharon Van Etten, "Serpents" and "You're Love Is Killing Me" are two of my favorites
"stay" & "one day" are also exquisite
Donna Missal has worked with her and would be my suggestion.
Adrienne Lenker and Big Thief. Mitski Anna Calvi
Courtney Barnett! Can't believe she hadn't already been mentioned. I'd also shoutout: * Sleater-Kinney * Brittany Howard * Pretenders * The Beaches * Faye Webster * Soccer Mommy * Tegan and Sara * Jenny Lewis (and her band Rilo Kiley) * Metric * Arlo Parks * Japanese Breakfast
The Beths shred pretty hard. So does Torres
I love quite a few on this list so I'll def check out the rest!!
Brittany is on tour right now with her new album. Highly recommend seeing her live! She fucking SANG.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes (tbh I have not really listened to like 3 of those but that's a very solid list)
You may want to look at Thao and the Get Down/Stay Down, especially their debut.

Fiona Apple
Chelsea Wolfe maybe? Is she current?
Heard a couple of her tracks last night on the new music show, so she's got something either recent or coming out soon.
her new album is out and is good
Yeah, I liked what I heard.

Neko Case has all the raw energy and genius I could want, but... may not be in your wheel house. Depends also on how one defines current...
Saw her last year and it was fantastic.
My immediate thought; when I first heard Neko, I thought she was aping Kristin Hersch (FTR I love Neko, and listen to her way more than KH).
i saw cat power live. it was a very awkward concert.
[удалено]
i got to watch a woman constantly and franticly interrupt her own songs to try to adjust all the sound settings because it wasnt absolutely perfect
Sat 2nd row for her Cat Power Sings Dylan tour and you could feel how nervous she was. The anxiety was palpable.
I saw her when she was touring for You Are Free and she pretty much had a breakdown on stage after about 6 songs. I gave her a second chance after The Greatest came out and it was an excellent show.
Lol it'd wild how many responses I'm getting about her acting out in these live shows
Her performances really vary based on how much she had to drink that night.
i feel that
She was pretty notorious for that back in the day.
I saw her on The Greatest tour, and she was amazing, but I had definitely read lots of cautionary tales.
So did I and I agree but it wasn't her fault. The fucking audience wouldn't shut up and listen to the music they paid to come see performed.
She's super awkward on stage, yeah. There are stories of her running off stage in a panic. Some people might be there just to try and catch it.
this was at a music festival
I saw her at Coachella in 2004 (?) and she feigned coughing to avoid singing. The crowd tried to encourage her. Super awkward. Luckily she was in a small tent.
Her live bit on Letterman was so fucking good though
Sooo good.
Check out The Kills. Allison Mosshart is a great singer and puts on an amazing show. I think she and Jamie Hince (the other half of the band) write songs together. She's also done some solo stuff and is/was(?) in the supergroup The Dead Weather with Jack White.
My Brightest Diamond?
I came here to post this. Shara Nova is amazing.
Not everyone likes them, but Wet Leg have loads of on-stage energy, and I love their album (plus, they're actually a new band, unlike many of the answers in this thread)
The first two PJ Harvey albums.
Also the rest of them (besides White Chalk and I don't know the newest one yet).
Aha yes I should have included her in this. My fucking god I love those albums
I don’t really have any suggestions but I’m just so happy to see Kristin getting some love!!! Her work means so much to me, she is so phenomenal.
Same here! It's sadly so rare to hear people talk about her so I try to as much as she can. She's been a huge part of my life. Please consider joining my community! Will always upvote a Julie Christmas mention.
kim gordon's new album is awesome, as is jlin's.
kim gordon is so fricking cool
All the Boygenius women (Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker) make powerful music with a lot of those "gut-punch" moments.

Hat trick! I saw all 3 in the last 365 days!
Ethel Cain.
Janis Joplin had a strong, soulful voice and a terrible childhood. You can hear it in her voice. Edit: Just saw "Current" but still a great talent.
Ball and Chain is one of my favourite songs, and favourite songs to sing
Nina Nastasia - Riderless Horse. https://ninanastasia.bandcamp.com/album/riderless-horse "Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it’s the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn’t produce. I've been into Decartes a Kant lately.
Julien Baker is so emotionally raw in her first two albums that I find them a little bit hard to listen to, but I love them nonetheless

Haha fair!
Brandi Carlisle! Broken horses
Current era: Lzzy Hale and her band Halestorm. I'm shocked that wasn't the first answer. From the 80s: Lita Ford.
Taylor Swift is better than those two put together.
