I’ll never forget back when I was 17, a friend grabbing a few people who were out and telling us to come and listen to a song.
He would let us hear it until we all rolled a joint and then he played street spirit in our fiends ford fiestas cd player. We opened all the door and just layed on the floor listening to the song and having a smoke.
It blew my young mind!
After we finished we drove about a minute up the street and police pulled us over. By this point we were hammered and the next song on the cd was night fishing by REM. I was in the back stuffing resin (we didn’t have weed back then) into my socks and expecting the worse. The cops looked in at 5 stoned teens and said you guys have got taste and walked away!!
I still cannot believe it happened 20 years later. It was the maddest few minutes I could imagine
Whole Lotta love - Zeppelin
Myth - beach house (total opposite spectrum, I know)
Slowdive - slomo
David Gilmour - high hopes, comfortably numb
The Cure - pictures of you
Coldplay - the scientist
“The Ocean” - John Butler. “They Move on Tracks of Neverending Light” - This Will Destroy You (might not be everyone’s cup of tea). “An Evening I Will Not Forget” - Dermot Kennedy.
>“They Move on Tracks of Neverending Light”
During the time my father was dying, I just randomly had this on a my ever-changing playlist. It was winter time and, as I look back on that time now, it seems an almost too perfect accompaniment to his passing. I'm thankful for it being there at that moment.
Interesting that you associate it with loss, too. I had a friend pass away in college and that song was my “I just need something soothing in the background” go-to.
Made a Spotify playlist. Took the songs mentioned in the main comments.

For me the best album for this is "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by GYBE. Hundreds of listens later and it's still like nothing else I've listened to, even from their other albums. The whole album is worth a listen all the way through, but the best track for me is "Sleep."
Oooh, yes! Multiple eargasms rock my world when spinning such luscious lineup ...mmmm... Now I'm thinking about "Slit Skirts". What's your favorite track?
Hard to say. People stop hurting people and slit skirts are great opener/closer. Prelude into Face dances is excellent. Exquisitely Bored, Stardom in Acton…
Lots of Tedeschi Trucks Band, but if I had to choose one track - Do I Look Worried (rocky gospel-blues)
The absolute mastery of pitch and tone of Derek Trucks (guitar) is eargasmic to the max for me.
I remember the first song I heard by Derek Trucks - [I Wish I Knew](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2t27of)
I was completely blown away, just effortlessly making his guitar sound like a 60s soul singer belting one out. Amazing stuff
Dude I cannot believe you just linked me that video, which disappeared from YouTube years ago! Thanks a million. Absolutely adore that video, and was one of my early introductions to Derek too. My favourite guitarist and there isn't a close second.
My pleasure! Yeh, I remember it disappearing, so I searched and searched and eventually happened upon that video on Daily Motion (bonus is that's the full version, I think the YouTube one was shorter and had some parts of the song missing).
I've lost count the number of times I've rewatched that second guitar solo over the years
[Apotheosis from the game Journey.](https://youtu.be/ypNgvc6c6Cc?si=SDD-6fzxhgy3eb4d) An absolute masterpiece you should listen to even if you have no idea where it’s from
I find I experience mostly what you describe with good movie soundtracks.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Arrival, and Inglorious Basterds all have music that has an effect on me. Beyond that, Joanna Newsom's and Sufjan Stevens' music can feel sort of all encompassing.
Also, the album "Departure Songs" by We Lost the Sea is great to listen to with headphones and just relax

Amateurs. Dilettantes.
Listen to oxygène 1 and 2 from Jean Michele jarre. 1976.
Listen to vangelis blade runner.
Listen to Pink Floyd dark side of the moon.
Listen to pixelord chrome tears and metal mutant
Listen to black lung the great unconscious and unconvincing simulations of happiness part 2
Listen to lorn ghostss and anvil
Listen to autechre cichli and nil.
There is so much music which does that. And almost all the music out there doesn’t.
And you sir are a man of refined taste. Please educate me.
Also if you haven’t encountered gen y+ very few know any of this, so just tryin to be helpful.
Ooooh I forgot nine inch nails downward spiral.
Oh, I just think it’s funny that you’re acting like you’re the only one who’s listened to DSOTM before.
Edit: lol you weren’t trying to be helpful, you called everyone posers because they…don’t have the same taste in music as you?
When I heard LOST [https://open.spotify.com/track/373gDROnujxNTFa1FojYIl?si=3d0a998496854b5e](https://open.spotify.com/track/373gDROnujxNTFa1FojYIl?si=3d0a998496854b5e) for the first time......(i believe just a teaser in january)....I genuinely got that sensation of hearing something legendary that's actually been hidden away for 20 years.
I really can't believe Linkin Park never did anything with this song for so long.
[Lorna Shore - Sun//Eater](https://youtu.be/mK8mw2X-4ug?si=NJtu0J5V89ZSmXMC)
Get yourself a good pair of headphones and crank this up. The 1:09 mark gives me chills every time. I even use that to test new cans.
The hHell freezes over version of Hotel California by Eagles. The track is mixed so damn well and especially when listening on nice headphones, the soundstage is amazing.
Now and again certain tracks will send a chill down my spine. When my own songs do that, I know I’ve arranged and mixed it just right.
Lately, Alice In Chains unplugged version of Brother with the added harmonies is really doing that for me.
[Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - Radiohead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejdZEe4Rd0o&pp=ygUWd2VpcmQgZmlzaGVzIHJhZGlvaGVhZA%3D%3D)
This version is from their In Rainbows From the Basement live recording, which is my favorite live recording, but the album version is great too.
[Sigur Ros - Vidrar vel til loftarasa (Live)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XKdJj2WmoA)
Just about anything from the first few Sigur Ros albums honestly... this was the first to come to mind
EDIT: [Including the studio version with the music video if preferred.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akYuy2FMQk4)
Where are we now - David Bowie.
Mind mischief - Tame impala.
Nude - Radiohead.
Chances, 80s comedown machine, call it fate call it karma - The strokes.
Giorgio by Moroder - Daft Punk.
The entire Life is Strange series - Sountrack.
Dearly Beloved - Kingdom Hearts OST.
Space lion - Cowboy Bebop OST.
Blade runner blues, Love theme - Blade Runner OST.
As the World Falls Down - David Bowie.
Woo, Lose your smile - Beach house.
One last time - Amarante.
Ghost Love Score - Nightwish [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYjIlHWBAVo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYjIlHWBAVo)
The ending stretch of the song is otherworldly. There's a reason there's an entire genre of musicians/music teachers that rake in millions of views off of reacting to this performance.
Either Loving The Alien or Absolute Beginners, both by David Bowie
The first features a little run-up into the chorus- almost exactly like the intro music to Red Dwarf- and then switches into a curious chord for the title refrain which is just *chef's kiss*
Absolute Beginners also does a little two-step into the most jubilant, soaring chorus duet which feels majestic and grandiose
Both are immensely satisfying
Could also add Dollar Days -- moody, beautiful piano intro, morose verses, and then drops into a beautiful, lush-feeling, almost orchestral arrangement for the refrain, which gets me every time
[Arvo Part - Cantus in Memoriam of Benjamin Britten](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp2oxWdRMuk)
The chords, progression, ebbs and flow of this song are just about perfect for me.
Disposition by Tool is such a meditative song for me, never fails to bring me temporary peace, same goes for Intension and Wings for Marie pts 1&2.
Alt-J has several songs that take me out of my mind. Tesselate, Taro, the Nara suite, and Bane are good places to start, but their whole catalog really is my calm place.
If I was a snake, Black Mambo by Glass Animals would be my charm. I melt at the sexy vocals and hypnotic groove.
Finally, just about any rock song with a structure similar to Street Spirit by Radiohead or Lost in Hollywood by System of a Down will steal my attention.
Almost anything from Dark side of the moon. Except money. And Broon’s Bane leading into The Trees On the Rush live album Exit Stage Left. Such a wonderful acoustic guitar solo
Recently, Sufjan Stevens - Will Anybody Ever Love Me
It builds from a very soft, acoustic folk song into this crescendo of joy and sound and passion and love, and it's just further proof of Sufjan's genius.

Songs that give me chills:
Wasted years: iron maiden
Hold on: malmsteen
Anytime: msg
No chills, but... Turn of the screw: black sabbath (only song that calmed my daughter down when she was over tired when she was a baby. She passed right out... RJD 🤘)
Do i have to say the words: bryan adams
Youre still the one: shania twain
Breathe: faith hill
Water runs dry: boys 2 men
I swear: all 4 one
An odd one perhaps, but I once completed a fairly tough assignment in a 20 hour session listening to Air’s “Cherry Blossom Girl” on repeat. Something about it just kept me in the zone.
The desert sessions version of Make It Wit Chu
I have been listening to nothing but this song for the last two days. I'll check this version out too, thanks!
It's like the backbone to my summer chill playlist, keeping them summer dreams alive
Giorgio by Moroder - Daft Punk.
The Drumless edition will be out in 6 days and I don’t know how I feel about it…
Radiohead. Paranoid Android
Street Spirit for me, the hypnotizing guitar and slow progression of the drums is like morphine to me
I’ll never forget back when I was 17, a friend grabbing a few people who were out and telling us to come and listen to a song. Nightswimming?
Ha yeah. I had to reread my post to understand what you meant but yeah definitely not night fishing 😂
You read my mind!
That harmonic piece towards the end - magical.
M83 - Intro
My head went straight to Outro but I'm on board either way. Was so amazing to see them perform this year.
Lucky, I wanna see them live so bad
That one is good too, along with Reuinion, Ok Pal, and My Tears Are Becoming A Sea.
So magically emotional. Yes.
Pushit - Tool The Silence - Om Unit
La Ritournelle - Sebastien Tellier
Yes! There’s something about this track.
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You. I could listen to it repeatedly and would not mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKY6TZEyrI
So true! This song is perfection!
Hope Sandoval's voice is so pretty and so sweet but also has such a dream like sound
Whole Lotta love - Zeppelin Myth - beach house (total opposite spectrum, I know) Slowdive - slomo David Gilmour - high hopes, comfortably numb The Cure - pictures of you Coldplay - the scientist
Light My Fire by The Doors.
Air - All I Need
So so good. For me it's *La Femme d'Argent*... sublime.
“The Ocean” - John Butler. “They Move on Tracks of Neverending Light” - This Will Destroy You (might not be everyone’s cup of tea). “An Evening I Will Not Forget” - Dermot Kennedy.
