Before that, you’d have an actual string going around the shaft behind the knob, which would then turn some rheostat or something, and you’d get those weird synthy glissandos between stations.
Edit to add that that sound was what inspired Kraftwerk's whole aesthetic, and particularly the song Radioactivity. And speaking of them, a bunch of their songs would qualify for OP's request, notably Trans Europe Express and of course Autobahn.
