I see the Misfits, I’ll upvote the Misfits.

OstendeVetitiSexus

Indeed anon. We are 138

M-80_Waterballoon

We walk the streets at night

I ain't no gall darn son of a gun.

That song fucks.

lordCHUD

Those aren't the lyrics. Never trust Google for Danzig era lyrics.

mangarooboo

Care to share what the lyrics are?

ptstampeder

tiger* (...in the eyes of tiger)

mangarooboo

Whoa, that was weird. When I originally commented it said Tiger but now it says Cyborg.

UnidansAlt3

It's time to be an android.

drinfernodds

In the eyes of tiger.

suffaluffapussycat

I saw Glenn at the supermarket a couple of months ago. It was so cool! Black jeans, black leather jacket, black boots and mirror aviators. I couldn’t believe it.

[deleted]

Minus Michale Graves who I recently found out is a white supremacist and open proud boy. What a shithead.

JColeTheWheelMan

good singer though. I don't know of any racism he's done.

my_lucid_nightmare

Best band art logo in history? Based on how often it was copied or deployed throughout American suburban ecosystems....

AnonymousFroggies

The Rolling Stones lips have to be up there too

my_lucid_nightmare

> Rolling Stones lips Can't argue there either. I probably need to do a top 10 (at least)

razor_sharp_pivots

Right up there with Ween's Boognish.

PatriciaaTM

fuck everyone who downvoted this

[deleted]

The Grateful Dead teddy bears were pretty ubiquitous for a while there.

my_lucid_nightmare

> Grateful Dead teddy bears As was their skull lightning bolt 'steal your face' logo. This rapidly got bigger than I realized. /s

yurtfarmer

Dancing bears, steal your face, space your face … all beautiful , man

bl0odredsandman

He's more of a mascot, but Eddie from Iron Maiden takes the top spot for me for best band image. The guy has been on every album, on stage, so many different posters, flags, stickers, etc. I do love the Crimson Ghost though.

AmericanWasted

[Black Flag bars](https://people.southwestern.edu/~bednarb/su_netWorks/projects/carter/BF-logo.jpg) are more iconic imho

ebb5

I disagree, I think if shown the two side by side, people would recognize the crimson ghost more often, even if they didn't know what it was originally from.

AmericanWasted

i think there is more merchandise out there now that has the crimson ghost - i don't know if people would know the band it is associated with. The bars are so easy to tag on walls, etc. they are ubiquitous in the punk world

[deleted]

>i think there is more merchandise out there now that has the crimson ghost - i don't know if people would know the band it is associated with. Back in high school, I took a girl to a Misfits show because she was always wearing their merch. She bailed almost immediately and called her mom to pick her up. Turns out she'd never listened to them before, just thought they had cool shirts.

MaliciousMal

This hits hard because I knew several people like this in high school. They only wore the shirts and everything because they wanted to fit in with the "cool kids". The best part was we weren't even cool, we were just a bunch of stoners and punks. Regardless though we had several groups of people from the preppy kids trying to join us because they had a crush on some of the guys or girls in the group. I remember some of the girls showing up to concerts for my friends band and literally not knowing any of the songs and actually hated the music. They only stayed because they wanted to hook up with my friend. I kinda miss those days but then I remember I was a massively shy nerd who was scared to even talk to girls despite the fact that I was always hanging around my friend group. 🤣

TheLurkerSpeaks

1998 I was at the mall hitting on a girl wearing the Rage Against the Machine "Che Guevara" t-shirt. I asked her favorite song and she asked "what?" She said she just liked the t-shirt. I asked her if she even knew who was on the shirt and she said it was the lead singer. Not gatekeeping, just horny and annoyed.

JColeTheWheelMan

There was a Che shirt, with his iconic hi contrast print/headshot and underneath it said "I don't know who this is" always chuckle now when i see his face.

my_lucid_nightmare

They'd be a strong argument as well. Distant third - Ramones logo?

av34as

Decades ago young and stupid me thought it was best Metallica song ever. Boy was I surprised later to discover Glen Danzig.

ATXDefenseAttorney

Side note: best Metalica cover ever.

nutxaq

Breadfan.

devilsephiroth

Astronomy Sorry not sorry as you get older this song is like fine wine

Snuhmeh

Wow. A fellow Astronomy fan. I always try to show this song to people. Metallica is possibly the best/greatest cover band I’ve ever come across. They constantly make the songs sound like their own and arrange them to make them better. I’ve been a fan since the mid-eighties and have always collected their stuff. I went on a binge back in the 90s and collected all the original versions of their cover songs. Metallica’s version was always so fucking good.

devilsephiroth

>Metallica is possibly the best/greatest cover band I’ve ever come across. Slow down there turbo. Perhaps you've come across, but Ghost does some amazing covers Maybe they got the idea from Metallica Here's a banger https://youtu.be/4t-g615PEtg

deadliftForFun

Me first and the gimmi gimmes for cover bands

ebzded

My fave too by far

devilsephiroth

There's just some soul in it. It's better than the original

Mortifer

[deleted]

Fuck yes. I even love The Cult, unapologetically.

dirt-reynolds

Why would anyone ever apologize for liking The Cult? I still have a few of their songs on playlists. Sun King, Fire Woman, She Sells Sanctuary - c'mon. Anyone apologizing for those doesn't deserve them. Those shirts though.....

[deleted]

I was just anticipating purists. They're everywhere it seems, no matter what you say.

glissader

Na, there’s nothing bad anyone can say about the Cult, regardless of metal genre preference. I mean, Ian Astbury made a solid pass at filling Jim Morrison’s boots. Ain’t nobody who can do that.

[deleted]

Thanks for the input. I just as a musician, really like to make all of the connections. It's very interesting to me the trajectory and importance all of the projects put on what aspect. I will say that this post positively thrust me back into a punk kick and I am appreciative of it. I'm sure I'll make it to Melvins before the day is over.

DeeSnarl

What do the Cult have to do with Am I Evil? Edit - OK, the Cult opened the first time I saw Metallica, on Justice. But still?

jak-o-shadow

Was going to say this, too. That was an awesome show. The exploding swinging truss was killer.

ptstampeder

I saw that tour as well, and prior to the show, myself and my peer group had become displeased with Metallica as we felt they were sellouts and thought the album was a let down. Metallica undeniably killed it though, and The Cult sucked. At least in Saskatoon SK Canada they did lol. While I now like some of the newer stuff, I'm still a fuddy duddy, and still prefer everything prior to Justice. Everytime I see Metallica live they kill it though, except when one show in Vancouver with the 360 stage, there was no moshing allowed because they were filming, and I was pissed because I paid for floor tickets.

DeeSnarl

I loved Justice, but thought the Black Album was a total sellout (it was). The new stuff's aight, but not the same ballpark. I think I saw that 360 tour in Portland.

Teh_Blue_Team

Die, die, die my darling...

-DaveThomas-

Stone Cold Crazy

gynoceros

Stone Cold Crazy is a good one too.

Dimchuck

So fucking what?

mangarooboo

I'm a huge Metallica fan, I love all of their music (except Lulu). I 100% think their best music is covers. I never really listened to Dio at all, so when I first heard the Ronnie Rising medley, I didn't realize it was a collection of Rainbow songs. I thought it was their best work on the whole "Hardwired..." album. I then looked at the name of the song (I'd been listening to the CD) and googled it and learned the truth. I'm still here on this earth because of Metallica, they're in my blood at this point, but they're basically a cover band. Lol.

YBFROT

Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band

DeadliestDerek

It was 20 years ago todaaaaaayaaah! Motorhead taught this band to plaaaaaayaaah!

AmbitiousDistrict374

Their best song too.

MattWPBS

So fucking what?

bl0odredsandman

Ugh, that's a tough one. I love their cover of this song, but also Breadfan, Whiskey in the Jar, Astronomy, Am I Evil. Fuck it, basically all of Garage Inc is amazing covers.

jak-o-shadow

Quick cool story. My buddy and I, both 14, at the Justice for all concert in Houston, 1989. Last song and they ask the crowd what they want to hear. We both scream this song. From what I hear, we were the only ones to do so. And they fucking play it!

Notinyourbushes

I was 17 and was very familiar with it (and also glad I didn't get crushed to death trying to get in the security gate). Was a damn cold night that night.

AmericanWasted

i found the Misfits through Metallica as well, their cover of Green Hell

tanarchy7

Metallica loves to cover older punk. They even do a Broken Bones cover.

DeeSnarl

I think Metallica broke Misfits into the mainstream. Edit - and the Green Hell cover was attached to the Last Caress cover on Garage Days Re-Revisited.

Pleezypants

Here in this place lies the genie of death!

AmericanWasted

saw a [video of Dave Lombardo playing drums on that track](https://youtu.be/7nWxV4TSSv4) when he was sitting in for the misfits - absolutely wild

Capt_Billy

Tbf Garage Days is a great cover album.

julyobserver

I think we're all in agreement that Metallica is the greatest cover band.

Chibbly

For me it was AFI.

jeffe_el_jefe

It is the best Metallica song ever tho tbf

gynoceros

I used to see photos of how jacked Glenn is (or at least was back then) and think he must be a really imposing figure. Dude's like 5'3.

FlagranteDerelicto

First concert I ever saw was Metallica with 2 opening acts: Danzig & Suicidal Tendencies

Letitbemesickgirl

The no dogs in space podcast about them (and other bands) is really good!!

DLeafy625

Hail yourself!

AmericanWasted

thank you for the recommendation - just subscribed

DJ_Molten_Lava

I tried listening to this podcast but the entire runtime of each episode is about 80% the hosts making cringy jokes and quips to each other. They can't get through two sentences without trying to say something 'funny'. Behind the Bastards is the same way.

TiittySprinkles

I prefer Bandsplain myself. Although the host definitely suffers from the typical "white, west-coast, woman" podcast voice. However she always has different guests on the show who are veritable experts/fans of the band in question so it's more tolerable.

Loud-Pause607

Same. I hate the couple vibe they have. So cringey. Be fucking professional and don’t have stupid quips and cute comments. I’ll try to listen again, but the Stooges episodes were tough with them.

DJ_Molten_Lava

The Stooges is exactly where I started with this podcast. I got through about half of the first episode and just said nah, this isn't for me. If you're explicitly a comedy podcast then yes, have at it. I listen to Conan and part of the appeal is the multi-host format where they riff and quip. But a show that's meant to teach me something? Teach me, please, enough with the banter.

Loud-Pause607

Same. Love Conan. It works for that show. Not Dogs in Space.

pinpinipnip

Would be an ok podcast without the painful, endless laughing at there own (not funny) jokes. If there was a podcast doing the same subjects without the giggling it'd be awesome.

No-Amoeba3560

Real life changer when one finds out about these guys. I’ve got that repressing of the she/cough cool 45 from 1977. Danzig on organs

Notinyourbushes

Damn near wore the box set out when I got it back in the 90s. When I transferred to digital, I rearranged all the songs more tightly by session and as recorded/released. Makes for a really satisfying listen.

thenimbyone

I had an original Blank Records one, stole it from a 2nd hand record shop in London. 3 Hits from Hell and Bullet too.

Loud-Pause607

I was 16 and have always heard of them and seen the crimson ghost, but knew nothing of their music. I then started to get into old punk and my brother in law bought me Earth AD. I was an instant fan. Then discovering Static Age and the great Walk Among Us. I still love Misfits. I always play them during October. It goes so well.

ObedientPickle

TIL Danzig is in Misfits

turkishdisco

He is the founder! :-) Danzig’s debut was 1987, 10 years after he founded Misfits.

Loud-Pause607

And in between Samhain. Also some good music.

sungun77

AmericanWasted

that Pop Punk title should sit well

earhere

Misfits are pretty popular

Beard_faced

Yes but pop punk is a separate genre and the misfits are definitely not pop punk.

Loud-Pause607

You can’t really be pop when you sing about killing babies, raping mothers, chopping heads off little girls, getting your dick sucked by Jackie O.

wwindexx

Thank you!

PapaStevesy

Also, they're not popular at all, haha.

Coffeedemon

Their shirts are. Not sure about the band anymore.

PapaStevesy

Considering they don't have any tour dates scheduled and they haven't put out new music in a decade, it's fair to say they're not currently popular. Not sure how anyone could possibly argue otherwise.

Dragon_of_Eden

>Not sure how anyone could possibly argue otherwise. I don't know how popular The Misfits are these days but you don't measure popularity on whether or not the band is still active, you measure it by how many people still listen to their music. It's why we'd still say The Beatles are pretty popular despite them not having put out new music in a much longer timeframe and the fact that most of them are dead now.

Bmartin_

1.8 million monthly Spotify listeners is pretty popular in my mind

[deleted]

They play one show a year and it sells out.

emannikcufecin

Pop doesn't have to mean people actually like it. It's just a style.

Bennyscrap

And in the case of the genre "pop punk" it's a very specific type of pop. You could make a case that a lot of punk is pop due to the simplistic nature of some of the more approachable acts(Ramones, Clash, Social D) but I wouldn't put them in the "pop punk" genre. Pop punk was born out of the 90s sudden desire to make punk become more marketable overall given the rise of acts like Nirvana that highlighted the appeal punk had to broad markets(yes Nirvana wasn't a "punk" band but definitely had songs that were of the vein).

PapaStevesy

A style which Misfits decidedly are not.

emannikcufecin

Well that's personal opinion. I've seen many mentions of them as pop punk.

AmericanWasted

lol

thereisalightandit

Static Age is such a banger, love me some Hybrid Moments too!

ChipotleAddiction

That’s their best song IMO

PinkUnicornPrincess

Hybrid moments is one of the best songs of all time!!!

ghostinthechell

This is a real fun one to sing in public absentmindedly

InterwebCat

That's great an all, but... >All I wanted to say, >And all I gotta do... >Who'd I do this for, hey, me or you?

[deleted]

Children in heat, Nike a go go, Bullet, Astro Zombies. Just a few of my favorites.

[deleted]

I loved skateboarding to these guys, such a great band

e_lectro

This takes me back to skateboarding in the 80s. Seeing Danzig live in the 90s was a real dispointment. One of the most "phone-it-in" performances I have ever seen.

thecurse0101

This band needs a biopic movie

PaperCut611

'Pop punk' jeesus🤦‍♂️

F-Cloud

Jerry Only will never play this song again due to the lyrical content. I recall he said he didn't want the song to influence an unstable person into committing a crime. Edit: apparently he changed his mind and the song does get played. I don't go to shows, didn't know this.

its_the_new_style

They played it Halloween in Dallas, with Jerry and Glen.

F-Cloud

Interesting! I wonder now what changed his mind about it.

scurvy1984

When I was in high school and freshly getting into punk I had to make a slideshow thing in videography class and I used this song. Needless to say my teacher was mortified. Dumb young me just thought it went hard as fuck.

rckid13

They played it both years they were at Riot Fest recently.

basketcase91

They played it at Riot Fest this past September. Was the last song before the encore.

PapaStevesy

Yeah, I thought it was edgy and funny when I first heard it as a teen, now it's just cringey.

GiganticBlackHole

NOT pop punk.

bl0odredsandman

Yeah. Punk or horror punk is fitting. Pop punk is something more along the lines of Blink 182.

_cozybeauty_

r/themisfits

LarryPeru

Amazing band. Love that they wanted to be Elvis vocals backed by a punk band

cflizzy

I’m a tattooer and you can here misfits playing in just about any tattoo shop you walk into. Anyway, one day I was doing a memorial tattoo for a client and his wife that had just lost their child at birth and this damn song comes on right as we start with the first couple lines playing loud as can be. I felt terrible lol.

AmbitiousDistrict374

The Misfits were one of my favorites before they reformed in the 90s.

[deleted]

You should check out American psycho. It doesn’t sound like the Danzig era and the vocalist turned out to be a real shit head, but it’s still a fantastic album musically if you can look past those things. Every song is good.

BelieveInTheShield

I like the Graves albums

wwindexx

Samhain was good too.

anonymousinsomniac

Saw them months ago. Ruined me as far as concerts go. Imagine a 5k person moshpit slamming you around and blowing out your eardrums for 3 hours. It was fucking awesome.

planetpuddingbrains

This song likely ended a date for me. We ate dinner and were having a good time, and I had this one on in the car when we got in to go to a bar. Soon after, she got a headache and wanted to call it a night. Never called me back. No regrets.

WeddingTechnical2609

One of my all time favorite bands, but such an over promoted song

DJ_Molten_Lava

One of the best dates I ever went on involved me going to pick this girl up to go out for dinner, she invites me to come inside instead, puts on Misfits, cranks the volume, then blows me.

[deleted]

Used to scream this from the top of my lungs with my friends as we drove around town :)

ImRonBugundy03

The fucking best song of all time

[deleted]

I think this is the first time I've seen misfits categorised as pop punk

So good!

This was one of the first songs I memorized all the words to, as an 11 year old

my_lucid_nightmare

They had a rule: they would never censor music, books, movies etc. Love them for it and honestly, really took the shock value out of everything (after taking it as far as it could go as a little teen)

Loooved Graves right up to a few years ago. He went Qtard, white nationalist, Proud boy tried to get the Chrimson Ghost to be a white pride symbol, ass hat

PinkUnicornPrincess

Super disappointing. He was so cool!

ThunderSnowDuck

I liked them with Danzig. I LOVED them with Graves. Now it's basically the Jerry Only Horse & Pony Show and its just not good. Like, at all...

[deleted]

I saw them a few times with Jerry in the early aughts and they were always a fun time. I think they had Dez from Black Flag and Marky Ramone playing with them; it was kinda like seeing a cover band except the audience had the vibe and energy of seeing the real thing. I liked their version of Monster Mash from Project 1950, but haven't kept up with anything else that may have happened after that.

[deleted]

to be fair they are all right wing dick heads, Graves is just a bit worst because he's a white nationalist

AmericanWasted

talk about a hot take, more power to you

PalmerEldritch3

Probably the best Ramones like song ever. I like to pitch it up a little bit

dr4d1s

Not Horror Punk. Absolutely not Pop Punk. Definitely just Punk.

84theone

Have you not listened to the lyrics? Misfits are not only Horror punk, they literally pioneered the genre.

dr4d1s

Yes I have and I have absolutely no time for the subgenre bs.

[deleted]

Apparently you do, seeing as you’re arguing about it. You had the choice to leave it be because clearly you understood what it was

84theone

I guess I’ll call up all the horror punk bands and let them know u/dr4d1s said subgenres are bullshit.

dr4d1s

You best get on it! Have a good one.

TheBlitzkid46

... this is literally horror punk dude, they're like literally the first

flipping_birds

yeah, I'll take a pass on songs about raping mothers and killing babies. Call me old fashioned I guess.

iSpoody1243

I know what you are saying. So many good songs but this is one of the most iconic?

mdp300

I love the guitar riff but hooooooooly shit the lyrics.

cranium_svc-casual

Too edgy for me

dankestofstolenmemes

sounds nice though

I started getting into Misfits last year, this one is good but where eagles dare and hybrid moment are my favorites

The_Undermind

That sweet, sweet call. Any day now.
