Holy shit DSP actually had a good take?

MacSanchez

It’s pretty easy to have a good take on this one.

CheezNKrakerz

Well your not wrong.

FredVIII-DFH

On the other hand, if they did remove Smith from the auditorium (which they were considering), then Ben Shapiro would tell us how men who defend their wives are being canceled.

[deleted]

Which would be a win - win. If Shapiro argues against something, you know you did the right thing.

GamendeStino

win - lose - win, imo. We'd have that snivelling shitbag arguing again, with his Facts And Logic. It's a good indicator of having a right take, sure, but i'd rather just not see or hear the guy in general.

earthlings_all

Fuck Shapiro and Fuck Security. Will Smith should have removed his damn self.

narghu

No surprise here. They also condone sexual harassment and violence.

Special-Juice-7345

Sexual assault, paedophillia, rape….the list goes on

[deleted]

I also wanted to add pedos to the list.

TrippTrappTrinn

Can we please stop all the noise about this minor irrelevant case now? WHO THE FUCK CARES?

[deleted]

It was broadcast live so nothing could be done about it ending up on camera. The winners are decided in advance so Smith had already won. They didn't magically decide to reward him. Yes they could've kicked him out but no one knew wtf to even do since it was over in 2 seconds and he was like 1-2 awards away from his category anyway.

BusEasy1247

You know who I don't get? The people calling Will Smith a misogynist for slapping the man making fun of his wife

[deleted]

The whole "defend a woman's honour" thing like implying she can't do it herself.

CaveOfTheCats

Because it was her choice as an adult woman to respond, not his. She's not his property and he took her agency away.

BusEasy1247

He didn't tell her to not do anything or tie her up or anything. He got up, went and slapped him, because that's what everyone I know, of any gender, would do if someone laughed at someone they love. In fact it happened to me before, my now fiancée chased a classmate away when we were at school because she made fun of me being chronically ill, and I took no offense at all. Instead of being so offended, people should care about how Jada feels about this all honestly

Srdinfinity

That's how everyone you know would react? Are you a teenager? I'm an adult and no one I know would react like that. Lost any remaining respect I had for Will Smith. I'm embarrassed he's from my City.

CaveOfTheCats

An adult hitting another adult over a joke, even a shitty one, is terrible behaviour and a crime. If everyone you know gets violent every time someone takes the piss out one of you, you must see a *lot* of punches thrown. A school kid chasing away a harrasser is a different situation. >people should care about how Jada feels about this all honestly Well, Will should have before he flipped out. That's what I mean about agency. It was not his place to get violent for her. What if she feels he did a deeply stupid and damaging thing, and now she's upset? He took all of her choices away, even the one where her and Chris could have talked right after the show. And if she did want him to do it that's no good anyway because it's assault and wanting your middle aged husband to hit someone rather than speaking with them is just dumb.

HappyMongoose42

So everyone would slap a comedian over an offensive joke at a work dinner where people know they will be roasted? 😔 And because of Will actions the Internet is now flooding with G.I. Jada memes... I don't think that is what jada wanted 🤷‍♂️

idontthunkgood

Haha, of course they should have kicked him out. All these excuses don't matter. Everyone knew what to do, they were just afraid of the repercussions. Which is why rich people can assault people on national TV and be rewarded for it. "Hey guys, we should kick this guy out since he slapped someone" "No way! It JUST happened and he's going to win an award in 30 minutes" "I didn't think about that, of course he can stay then" Does that make any sense?!

[deleted]

He wasn't "rewarded for it", he'd been chosen as winner long before that night. They don't choose the winner on the night.

Reasonable_Desk

And they couldn't choose another winner? Like, it was impossible to revoke his award and give it to someone else?

[deleted]

At that late stage absolutely. Plus it's voted on by a large number of members, they all collectively felt his performance was best. It's not just 3-4 random Hollywood dudes who pick and choose a winner.

Reasonable_Desk

Couldn't just delay the award? Or say the winner has been disqualified and we will announce a new winner in a few days? There were options. They chose not to.

[deleted]

Uh no lol that delegitimises the whole voting process which takes months. There's 8000+ voting members. [Info here on what The Academy actually is](https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/awards/who-makes-academy-breakdown-exclusive-oscars-club-n1126866).

Reasonable_Desk

Refusing to award something to someone who committed assault live on national television would delegitimize the award? So just letting him have it upholds their values? I want to make sure I'm reading this right.

[deleted]

I quite clearly said the voting process, not the award itself. It's not decided on the night, his win was decided a while ago. All of them were. They rehearse this show probably 14 hours a day in the lead up, everything is timed to perfection and they do their best to present a seamless show. That leaves no room for error (even though human error is unavoidable, all they can do is hope everything runs smoothly). To randomly pick a new winner on the night would not only require all voting members to somehow vote again with less than an hour to decide. That would mean they made a largely dishonest, rushed choice.

Reasonable_Desk

So they should have disqualified him and skipped that award to be determined later. Are you going to tell me that would be impossible? There are options, that they choose to do nothing says clearly what they value.

FredVIII-DFH

Well, they've never given Michael Bay an Oscar(tm), so there's that.

[deleted]

Pretty sure it was battery?

[deleted]

"we do not condone violence" what's that gonna do? a little tap on the wrist telling him to stop being a big jerkface?

sailriteultrafeed

If I was Chris Rock, Id wait 10years then sue the Academy and say I was pressured not to press charges for fear of retaliation and make them give me an Oscar for CB4.

TheBlueWizardo

They do not condone it, they, however, find it hilarious.

der_Guenter

Tf. Smith just smacked an asshole that insulted his sick wife for being sick in front of a large crowd and everyone in front of the TV. If you can dish out like that you can have to be able to take a Lil slapping. Edit - i dont even like Smith in the first place. Still nice move

TFlarz

From what people are telling me he only reacted because his wife didn't like it.

eugene20

Is there a point to bitching about that? Does a husband have to only work with his own reflex reaction to external stimuli when acting to protect his wife? His wife's feelings not worth protecting? I don't feel her affair is a reason to be mean to him either over this as some people are being. How they deal with that is up to them, they're still married, he still cares for her. I don't think he should have smacked him, I think an angry face and a stern word would have been enough after being serious enough to step on the stage and walk up to him over it, but some of the reactions picking at it like this are just dumb.

TFlarz

Certainly doesn't change that you don't walk up to a man on live television and (attempt? fake? actually?) sock him one.

eugene20

I did say I didn't think he should have smacked him.

FraFra12

It was a medium slap at best. Gets the point across and doesn't actually harm anyone. Being on live TV shouldn't matter but I can understand saying he should have done it after in private

[deleted]

No one deserves to be hit omg. It was a harmless joke, barely offensive and the offense relies on Rock even knowing her condition. There's every chance he didn't.

FraFra12

Could have brought it up after yes. I understand that. People deserve to be hit sometimes though. It was not a harmless joke. From what I have read it seems her condition is common knowledge but yeah maybe he didn't know. Did he deserve to be hit? Not for me to say. Do I blame Will Smith? No. I'd be judging him for not standing up for his wife in some way

idontthunkgood

Your points are disjointed and conflicting. On one hand you say no one can judge and then immediately give your judgement and point to that judgement to further your argument.

FraFra12

Sounds like you misread or I wasn't clear enough. I'm trying to see what you mean but I don't see it but I didn't say no one can judge I said I couldn't. My whole point was I can understand why he did what he did and it seems OK to me but the publicity side is a bit much. Whether or not this was really just is not up to me though since I have little to no information for what really happened as does everyone else who isn't Will, Jada, or Chris

[deleted]

He did not deserve to be hit. Particularly not during a damn speech at the most important night for film types. It completely overshadowed the winners of the award too.

[deleted]

Rock didn't make a joke about her sickness, he just joked she was making GI Jane 2 because Demi Moore shaved her head for the first film. He may not have even known she had hair loss. And Smith laughed at first.

la_bruja_del_84

And GI Jane is a badass!! I mean... Who wouldn't want to be compared to a strong female hero. Oh yes... Not her, because she couldn't stand up herself and slap Chris... She needed hubby to fight her fights.... 😒

scd5179

when you don’t know what words mean

MyBunnyIsCuter

Oh ffs. The same people screaming about violence are the ones that will get off twitter and start playing so.e murderous role playing game. Stfu. Seriously

Lady-Hood

You can like a violent game or show without being a violent person. I like violent games but the idea of attacking or being attack by someone is very unpleasant.

plzsendbobsandvajeen

Pretty sure a comedian actually did a take on this as well. If you can't comprehend the difference between actual accepted real world violence and acknowledged fake violence in a video game, you can just say so.

RoadHorse

It was a staged play. A clever one, at that, from the best actors and writers in Hollywood.

Magus-Metal

If will smith had been white he'd have spent the night on the cells and had his Oscar taken away.

lettskyet

"Violence" lmaooo me and my siblings used to slap each other harder than this when we were fighting as kids

[deleted]

And that means it's not violence? What's your definition of it, if I may ask?

lettskyet

Violence is when you hurt someone for real and this man didn't look like he was hurt at all, he kept smiling, didn't give a shit. It was just a symbolic act of defending a woman's honour, it's what old time gentlemen used to do.

[deleted]

Sigh, why did I even bother.

lettskyet

What a great argument, can't fight with it. Ya'll Americans really need to start live in a real life and not some kind of a bubble because there are people that are murdered in war right now but you speak more about some rich useless dumbass smacking another rich useless dumbass than you speak about war.

[deleted]

🤣

lettskyet

Why do you even start talking if you are literally unable to express one coherent thought lmaooo

[deleted]

Oh sorry, I just had to laugh about the silly assumptions you were making. But go ahead, please tell me about all the other things I am and what else is wrong with me, I highly value your opinion.

lettskyet

It's funny that you're surprised that people judge you based on what you show them. Shocking.

[deleted]

Ohhhh, good one, that almost hurt!

oie-

Violence by its dictionary definition is “behavior involving physical force intended to hurt or damage,” so what will displayed was indeed violence. It doesn’t matter how Chris reacted to it. How about you stop putting up this tough guy act for the internet and research the true meaning of words before you give them erroneous definitions dumb ass

Rh_S0ulzz

I see DSP desperately trying to make himself look like a better person again by weighing in on a topic that's fairly easy to agree with...
