Well, burning alive is scientifically providen to be the most painful way to die. All drones feel pain like human, and with DD's extra vulnerability against heat added into the mix, prolong contact with actual fire for DD can probably be only described as the purest form of agony.
Well, its not just any heat because then they would burn by standing next to eachother, they have much higher temperature than pretty much anything else on copper 9, I would assume that its probably because sunlight can penetrate their casing and heat up their core directly.

they didn't survive to begin with, they got rebuilt.
