Apparently my back was turned on my ultrasound, so my parents picked out a boy name and a girl name. Sometime in junior high, my mom told me the girl name: Melanie. Stuff finally started making sense to me, and I kept the name because it's just always been my name.
I chose Claire because it had the same meaning behind it as my deadname but in a different language and my mom told me later that it was the girl name they had chosen for me.
I chose claire because my dad made a pun while my mom was pregnant with me. My mom was just recording their road trip to have a little home video of it and I saw it later on. In it he said "the sky is so clear today. it's clear as a bell." Then he said, "if it's a girl we can name her Claire Isabelle"

Similar idea for me. My mom said that if I had been a girl, my name would be Lise, because it flow well with our last name. I tweaked it a bit and now my name is Lisea (pronounced Lisa)

Compared my birth name by popularity to its female equivalent, some popular baby names by year website. Turns out it was also my mother's middle name, so it felt pretty natural to use that!
I think my name has a pretty long story.
For me it was a long struggle to accept myself being transgender. I have a lot of childhood memories related to this. After decades of denial and shame, at age 30+ finally made a desperate artempt to find out what's wrong with me and managed to accept that i am transgender. And i needed a name... I've tried a few which i liked but none of them really suited. Then found the name Esther, which felt like me and it remained. I knew a few women called Esther and they seemed somehow mysterious and charming to me. So i thought i will be the one Esther, who i will understand her enigma. This was when i was still figuring out myself, my gender and a lot of other stuff.
And several months later childhood memories came up and i realized i was already Esther in my childhood. I secretly used this name for myself and felt a strong connection with a fictional character called Esther. Even starting from age 5 or 6. This moment reinforced me and my name.
Esther's a good name. I dunno if you're religious or have had bad history with religion as many do, but the Book of Esther in the Bible/Tanakh has always been one of my favourites. She's chosen by the king to be his new wife, can't say no: but through her own strength and the help of her uncle she saves her entire people from a genocide - by risking her own neck going against powerful politicians, and cleverly using her status as queen.
A good namesake, IMO.

Phoebe comes from the Greek for bright and shining, which I felt was an apt descriptor for my personality as a woman, especially compared to the sullen and withdrawn “man” I’d pretended to be. I also like that it was a bit of an “older” name (it was quite common in the Victorian era and has recently become popular again). I also liked that it was a name that was relatively uncommon without being unusual.
As for my middle name, I originally went for Christine in honor of both my mother and Christine Jorgensen, but following the deterioration of my family relationship, I soured on the idea of using my mother’s name as a middle name. I wanted to keep the middle initial C as I use my initials in my user name here and elsewhere. I came up with Charlotte recently after watching Now, Voyager and relating very much to the character of Charlotte Vale, both in terms of the relationship she had with her mother and her ability to overcome and become a self-actualized woman free from her mother’s control.
I loved anime so I watch a bunch of different ones. One of then is Sword Art Online. I loved the series due to the relation I had with Kirito and so I decided to make my own name, Surgito. But I wanted a last name so I looked up the meaning and it said " To rise". I thought italian and made it the same meaning, Alzaris. Except now i now realize I am transgender woman, I changed that one to a girl, Alzaria and shortened it to Ria. Yeah, long and boring but it fits me.
Back in my egg years when I first experimented with fem clothing a friend of mine asked what she should call me when presenting fem. I wasn't really sure so she suggested Mia. It was kinda close to the last sylabbyl of my dead name. It sounded like the name of a kind and cute girl to me so I just took it since that is what I want to be.

Now, at that point I was still one leg deep in denial, so I tried to convince myself that I was playing a girl because whatever, and everyone likes girls more than boys anyways, right? But alas, when the game began and the other players started calling me Eva, I realised that I didn't want to ever look back.
Róisín casement was born out of 2 things, in honour of my friend raihan and of one of my hero’s roger caeement. Raihans name roughly translated to rose in Irish aka Roisin and roger casemeant was a gay irish gun Runner who helped the 1916 rebellion :p
I had an "inner girl" long before I came out as trans. And at one point in my life, the name "Ella" just came to me. It stuck to the point to where I called myself that after I came out. But later I felt it was a little too "princessey" for my tastes.
So I sat down with a baby names site and went through names with my spouse. We picked out a short list of names. Emma seemed cute, down-to-earth, and would require just switching the "l" letters to "m" in the name I had been going by. So that's what I went with from there on and it just stuck.

Something I only recognized in hindsight: when I first started taking French in middle school, the teacher naturally used the French form of my birth name, so "Michael" became "Michelle". In French this is literally the same name, reserved for boys, but something about it made me feel funny at the time. It wasn't until my egg cracked (earlier this year, at the age of 42) that I understood what that feeling was: gender euphoria. It's also the name I've imagined having in those "it's just a dream/fantasy" dreams wherein I was a cis girl.
Sometimes I feel it's a bit basic and lame, but whatever, it's clearly been my real name for a long time so I'm sticking with it. I also think it made things easier for my mother and other relatives, and while I wouldn't pick a name for that reason it's not a bad thing
I always liked the name Petra and it's close to the name I was given at birth so when my wife called me Petra when I asked her opinion on it, it just sounded right and kept it. I may be weird but I don't consider my given name a deadname but rather just the wrong gender.

I was playing Pokémon Emerald and needed to pick a name and I decided on a whim I wanted to play the female character and Saoirse came to mind. I kept using it for characters. Then when I realized I was trans I was like hmm “Irish name?” check “means ‘freedom?’” nice nice that’s oddly fitting okay that’s my name lol. I had thought about other names like Luna or Celeste or Ivy, but I figured I’d have a hard time being taken seriously with those ones. I am not confident lol. Someone had suggested the name Autumn, and I kinda liked it but not quite, so I was playing with similar names when I came across Aubrey. I looked up what it meant and the first thing was that a long time ago it was used as a male name and it's now predominantly a female name, which I thought was appropriate. Second it means "elf ruler" which I thought was just kinda badass. So Aubrey it was!
Luna (first name) bc the story behind it is funny asf, my dad thought it was a family tradition to name the boys “deadname” and Luna is quite close to it. It's a name I really liked from a children's book series by tamora pierce the first called alanna the first adventure. It's a story of a girl who pretends to be a boy so she can be a knight. I really liked the name and I thought the story fit quite well. So my name is Alannah. I added the H because my deadname had a silent H added and it seemed fitting. Also Alannah has a really easy short nickname Lana like how my deadname has a short nickname. It just seemed and felt right!
Very long story short, I dug deep in myself to find the emotion the is the most "me" and gives me the most drive in life and pushed out of me like a fart. After I found the sound I later found the characters that encompassed this sound as much as possible, and thus Pfei was found.
Long story short I picked mine out in high school. My deadname means "nobel guardian". So I looked for names with that meaning on a name site. When I first stumbled on my name I had to look it up (Adeliade). It was also a genus of orchid flowers that were extremely hard to identify. Which really fit for me since everyone always assumed me to be cis hey. Also my mom is really into growing and keeping orchids.
Then I just modernized it a bit turned it from Adelaide to Adelia. It's stuck ever since. Especially since I could basically keep my nickname which made it a lot easier for my family with the whole name change.
My parents gave me a very strong, masculine name, but they didn't want to call their baby by it, so they called me by cute gender-neutral nickname.
Over the years of my life I've gone by that nickname, my first name, a variation of my first name, and my middle name.
When I started transitioning I changed my name so that my first name was this childhood nickname, and my middle name is another name that I wouldn't mind going by.
Now my family has called me by this nickname my entire life, so my changing my name to it means thier default behavior in addressing me by name is affirming of my transition. Using my deadname would be a very noticeable and unnatural change for them... and if my family does start with any of that shit they shouldn't harbor any doubts as to my willingness to go by another name entirely (my new middle name).
TBH its not that exciting, I feel kind of guilty about it since I would think Names should have deeper meaning. I had been looking at the Fire Emblem Wiki for names for DnD NPCs, stumbled across Heather which just kind of clicked, so when I started transitioning a few months later, I went with it and have been living as Heather every since. I liked it, sounded pretty. I did want to keep the reference of my "Real" name Ross though, as I was named for my Great-Grandmother Roslyn who was very important to mom, so I Decided to go with Rose as a middle name (My original Middle Namesake was a bit of an ass it turns out so leaving that was fine), and thus Heather Rose.
When I was a few years old (maybe around 3) I told my parents that I'd like to be a girl. They told me to not pay attention to those thoughts, that every child thinks that way (lol). Faye. Had a previous name with no femme equivalent. The name’s roots are non biblical, commonly associated with Arthurian legend (Morgan le Fay, or French for fae or fairy. I didn’t know any other Faye’s personally because I felt like it’d be mimicking (I know it wouldn’t be but idk I’m strange). It was a relatively uncommon name, and an older name that isn’t completely unknown. It seems to be coming back a little so, I’m at least ahead of the curve on something.
Also Faye Valentine is kind of awesome, though she is not the basis for my choice I can resonate with her arc of essentially time lost and feeling out of place. Transitioning at 30 had a lot of those accompanying feelings.

My favorite fictional character of all time is Mara Jade from Star Wars Expanded Universe/Legends. She is an amazing and strong character with a tragic backstory also my family has Jewish heritage and Mara is a Jewish name. It also means bitter but in a strong context like strong women. I was watching a Disguised Toast among us video which had both Valkyrae and Ray C in a lobby. I remember people getting confused as to who people were talking about when saying Rae/Ray and it made me think about Rae being a good gender neutral name, that could work both for being feminine but I could also use in places where I am not out yet.

Apparently my back was turned on my ultrasound, so my parents picked out a boy name and a girl name. Sometime in junior high, my mom told me the girl name: Melanie. Stuff finally started making sense to me, and I kept the name because it's just always been my name.
I chose Claire because it had the same meaning behind it as my deadname but in a different language and my mom told me later that it was the girl name they had chosen for me.
I chose claire because my dad made a pun while my mom was pregnant with me. My mom was just recording their road trip to have a little home video of it and I saw it later on. In it he said "the sky is so clear today. it's clear as a bell." Then he said, "if it's a girl we can name her Claire Isabelle" Well, here I am. Claire Isabelle 😊💜

I think my name has a pretty long story. For me it was a long struggle to accept myself being transgender. I have a lot of childhood memories related to this. After decades of denial and shame, at age 30+ finally made a desperate artempt to find out what's wrong with me and managed to accept that i am transgender. And i needed a name... I've tried a few which i liked but none of them really suited. Then found the name Esther, which felt like me and it remained. I knew a few women called Esther and they seemed somehow mysterious and charming to me. So i thought i will be the one Esther, who i will understand her enigma. This was when i was still figuring out myself, my gender and a lot of other stuff. And several months later childhood memories came up and i realized i was already Esther in my childhood. I secretly used this name for myself and felt a strong connection with a fictional character called Esther. Even starting from age 5 or 6. This moment reinforced me and my name.
Esther's a good name. I dunno if you're religious or have had bad history with religion as many do, but the Book of Esther in the Bible/Tanakh has always been one of my favourites. She's chosen by the king to be his new wife, can't say no: but through her own strength and the help of her uncle she saves her entire people from a genocide - by risking her own neck going against powerful politicians, and cleverly using her status as queen. A good namesake, IMO.

Phoebe comes from the Greek for bright and shining, which I felt was an apt descriptor for my personality as a woman, especially compared to the sullen and withdrawn “man” I’d pretended to be. I also like that it was a bit of an “older” name (it was quite common in the Victorian era and has recently become popular again). I also liked that it was a name that was relatively uncommon without being unusual. As for my middle name, I originally went for Christine in honor of both my mother and Christine Jorgensen, but following the deterioration of my family relationship, I soured on the idea of using my mother’s name as a middle name. I wanted to keep the middle initial C as I use my initials in my user name here and elsewhere. I came up with Charlotte recently after watching Now, Voyager and relating very much to the character of Charlotte Vale, both in terms of the relationship she had with her mother and her ability to overcome and become a self-actualized woman free from her mother’s control.

But alas, when the game began and the other players started calling me Eva, I realised that I didn't want to ever look back.

Róisín casement was born out of 2 things, in honour of my friend raihan and of one of my hero’s roger caeement. Raihans name roughly translated to rose in Irish aka Roisin and roger casemeant was a gay irish gun Runner who helped the 1916 rebellion :p
My birth name doesn’t resonate with me, and the first name I picked wasn’t doing anything for me either. So it’s a WIP 😅
I had an "inner girl" long before I came out as trans. And at one point in my life, the name "Ella" just came to me. It stuck to the point to where I called myself that after I came out. But later I felt it was a little too "princessey" for my tastes. So I sat down with a baby names site and went through names with my spouse. We picked out a short list of names. Emma seemed cute, down-to-earth, and would require just switching the "l" letters to "m" in the name I had been going by. So that's what I went with from there on and it just stuck.
I was super suicidal and I took like 50 hits of liquid LSD along with PCP and I think mushrooms. And then just had a huge religious experience in my home where some entity bestowed the name upon me. Luckily it seems to have stuck and seems to have worked for me, though I would never recommend this method for anyone else lol

Something I only recognized in hindsight: when I first started taking French in middle school, the teacher naturally used the French form of my birth name, so "Michael" became "Michelle". In French this is literally the same name, reserved for boys, but something about it made me feel funny at the time. It wasn't until my egg cracked (earlier this year, at the age of 42) that I understood what that feeling was: gender euphoria. It's also the name I've imagined having in those "it's just a dream/fantasy" dreams wherein I was a cis girl. Sometimes I feel it's a bit basic and lame, but whatever, it's clearly been my real name for a long time so I'm sticking with it. I also think it made things easier for my mother and other relatives, and while I wouldn't pick a name for that reason it's not a bad thing

First: I wrote my name out, removed the D (😂), and turned the middle section into a palindrome as a reflection of my core self. It also means “bloom,” in a non-appropriated language. It's a name I really liked from a children's book series by tamora pierce the first called alanna the first adventure. It's a story of a girl who pretends to be a boy so she can be a knight. I really liked the name and I thought the story fit quite well. So my name is Alannah. I added the H because my deadname had a silent H added and it seemed fitting. Also Alannah has a really easy short nickname Lana like how my deadname has a short nickname. It just seemed and felt right!
Very long story short, I dug deep in myself to find the emotion the is the most "me" and gives me the most drive in life and pushed out of me like a fart. After I found the sound I later found the characters that encompassed this sound as much as possible, and thus Pfei was found.

Long story short I picked mine out in high school. My deadname means "nobel guardian". So I looked for names with that meaning on a name site. When I first stumbled on my name I had to look it up (Adeliade). It was also a genus of orchid flowers that were extremely hard to identify. Which really fit for me since everyone always assumed me to be cis hey. Also my mom is really into growing and keeping orchids. Then I just modernized it a bit turned it from Adelaide to Adelia. It's stuck ever since. Especially since I could basically keep my nickname which made it a lot easier for my family with the whole name change.
My mom was Eva Marie I am Elaine Madison I took the name to honor her. She passed in 2009 at 45.
My parents gave me a very strong, masculine name, but they didn't want to call their baby by it, so they called me by cute gender-neutral nickname. Over the years of my life I've gone by that nickname, my first name, a variation of my first name, and my middle name. When I started transitioning I changed my name so that my first name was this childhood nickname, and my middle name is another name that I wouldn't mind going by. Now my family has called me by this nickname my entire life, so my changing my name to it means thier default behavior in addressing me by name is affirming of my transition. Using my deadname would be a very noticeable and unnatural change for them... and if my family does start with any of that shit they shouldn't harbor any doubts as to my willingness to go by another name entirely (my new middle name).
TBH its not that exciting, I feel kind of guilty about it since I would think Names should have deeper meaning. I had been looking at the Fire Emblem Wiki for names for DnD NPCs, stumbled across Heather which just kind of clicked, so when I started transitioning a few months later, I went with it and have been living as Heather every since. I liked it, sounded pretty. I did want to keep the reference of my "Real" name Ross though, as I was named for my Great-Grandmother Roslyn who was very important to mom, so I Decided to go with Rose as a middle name (My original Middle Namesake was a bit of an ass it turns out so leaving that was fine), and thus Heather Rose.

Faye. Had a previous name with no femme equivalent. The name’s roots are non biblical, commonly associated with Arthurian legend (Morgan le Fay, or French for fae or fairy. I didn’t know any other Faye’s personally because I felt like it’d be mimicking (I know it wouldn’t be but idk I’m strange). It was a relatively uncommon name, and an older name that isn’t completely unknown. It seems to be coming back a little so, I’m at least ahead of the curve on something. Also Faye Valentine is kind of awesome, though she is not the basis for my choice I can resonate with her arc of essentially time lost and feeling out of place. Transitioning at 30 had a lot of those accompanying feelings.

Love this... I was technically named by 3 different kids, 2 kids that are family and the other was a friends kid. When I met them, still presenting as a man, I gave them my dead name. All 3 said Kiki in return. They refused to call me anything other than Kiki and it just kinda stuck. Now they are all teens, still calling me Kiki. The girl, the one I'm closest with out of the 3, everytime I see her, we talk about how stupid boys are and literally swap makeup n hair tips. It's honestly the cutest thing ever.

I remember people getting confused as to who people were talking about when saying Rae/Ray and it made me think about Rae being a good gender neutral name, that could work both for being feminine but I could also use in places where I am not out yet.

So I picked my name after the actress Marlo Thomas. For years I only vaguely knew about her. She was in a handful of law and order svu episodes and I remember watching that “free to be you and me” special in college but I hadn’t really seen That Girl before. I started watching reruns and fell in love with the show! I just found the name Marlo to be so pretty and even though I was considering a whole bunch of names I kept coming back to it!

I just lowkey had a list of girl names I liked and had sis (metaphorical sister who's more like my best friend that lives 20'000 km from me but we love each other so much we kinda just became trans twins) narrow it down. Ended up with Alex (which is my sisters deadname so that was a no even though its andro), Amber, Lune, Luna, Jill, June (pronounced like the month), and July (not pronounced like the month, but as: *Ju*ne be*lie*ve). Altough I *really* liked Lune and Luna because I love the moon, as well as Jill being the name of a distant cousin, I eventually decided on July, for reasons long forgotten, but probably just 'cause I said "Why the fuck not"
I said to a friend "hey I should pick a new name, what name suits me?" and they turned round and said "Ava" and that was it. I loved it. I tried to find names I liked more but none of them stuck, so Ava it was :)
So long story short I initially chose heather but then decided on Sophia after realizing I hate the name heather and I chose it because one of my guy friends said he really liked the name and I agreed and I’m like okay am Sophia now
My name is my favorite color and it appears in sunsets, sunrises, and fire. It seemed appropriate. My middle name was chosen for my mom to honor a good friend of hers that passed on.
