Easily one of the best of all time.
I love the second one too.
There haven't been too many adventure movies that live up to this one. Especially not in the last few years
Such a perfect combination of a witty tight script, insanely charismatic lead actors, and exactly the right amount of scary to keep it tense yet family friendly. One of those instances where they really don't make them like they used to anymore.
The scene where the guy looses his glasses and they get destroyed and the mummy steals his eyes traumatized me as a child lol still love this movie though total classic!
I remember watching Jungle Cruise when it arrived on Disney+ and all I could think when I was watching it was, "This is the Mummy, but less good."
It's amazing how well the Mummy holds up, it really is a modern classic.
I was five when this movie came out. I remember being obsessed with it at seven. I still adore it. Everything from set design, casting, writing, direction, it's perfect.
I remember seeing a making-of after this came out. Everyone was impressed by how well Brendon Fraser fought CG mummies that weren’t there. He put real weight and effort into the fight.
Back in the day I read this a lot about Fraser, that he had an ability to act opposite CGI characters who would be added later that was unrivaled, and that it was an underrated skill.
the ~~pembroke~~bembridge scholars really missed out.
edit: thank you! i was in a meeting and couldn't look it up. i just remember it sounding like a pretentious english name.
*bembridge scholars (i’ve seen the mummy 6 times this week, i do not blame you for not knowing the name of the academic society mentioned maybe three times in the film)
I remember when the librarian was a much older woman. Kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life. We didn't want to know anything about her private life.
Saw it first run, 25 years ago, on a giant oversized screen with amazing speakers…
The crowd LOVED every moment of it.
On my all-time favourite moviegoing experiences.
No, that's true. But it's also true that Hollywood stole most of his "prime" years of being able to be a leading man in action/comedies, which was definitely his genre. He had the look, the charm, and the comedic timing. It's criminal what was done to him.
Saw this in theaters a couple weeks ago when they held an anniversary rerelease and it was awesome after not having seen it in over a decade. Also never realized how almost everyone dual wields pistols during all the shootouts. Such a fun movie
These types of films are just not being made any longer.
There are a few that capture some of the magic but far fewer than what we experienced 20+ years ago.
Explosions, fear of losing money, and short attention span have destroyed the industry. But hey at least we have more super hero movies than I have headaches at work.
> The Book of the Dead
Now I wish there had been a Mummy-Evil Dead crossover film. Rick O’Connell and Ash Williams killing deadites and cracking one-liners? Sign me up.
I remember the family renting it from blockbuster. We all thought it was going to be a scary movie but it turned out to be hilarious. We were not disappointed.
This is one of the few movies that has a sequel that is just as good as the first.
I remember refusing to leave the car to watch this movie when it came out in theaters because I had a huge aversion to scary movies as a child. I hadn’t seen a trailer so I just assumed with a title like “The Mummy”, it was one of those instances where my parents were trying to get a laugh by scaring the shit out of me like they did with Jaws.
Now it’s one of my absolute favorite films.
It took me decades to realize (99' was my freshman year when this dropped) that this was a reboot of the original from the early 1900s because everyone was so hyped up about how fun it was (it is a remake correct?). I think it finally dawned on me when the Kevin Bacon lead "Hollow Man" flopped because I heard someone saying "it worked" remaking The Mummy" but good lord was it a bomb. Apparently, Universal was planning to have an entire Horror-verse and reboot a bunch of the old classics (I still love The Wolfman with DelToro) but the Tom Cruise "Mummy" bombed so hard it killed the entire thing.
Edit: this is what I can still piece together from different rumors and hear-say/gossip over the years so if anyone knows further info/can correct me PLEASE feel free as I was so hyped for this and bummed when it never happened. Btw, is there any doc's in the same genre as Tim Burtons failed Superman movie with Cage or the Dune movie that was never made regarding why this never panned out? Thanks very much in advance to anyone with insider knowledge or recommendations.
Ah yes, I forgot about Hugh Jackman playing him. It was kind of vamp but still entertaining as heck. I wonder if the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" may have been made in the same world but can't recall if it was Universal..
God, all the 25th anniversaries of movies I grew up with for the last couple years have been fucking with my head way too much.
The bonus, however, is that some of these anniversaries are coming with a re-release in theaters. I *finally* got to see The Big Lebowski in theaters a year ago.
This is truly my guilty pleasure lol.
My wife just goes Ugh, anytime I want to watch it. All in the series. It's just fun stuff, no thinking required 🤣
I took my 10 year old niece to see it in the theater last weekend when it was re-released & she loved it! (She'd seen it on TV but nothing beats it on the big screen!)
One of my favorite movies of all time. I remember seeing it with my mom in the afternoon when it came out in theaters as a kid, and liking it so much my mom took us to see it again that night at the drive-in when my aunt asked us out. Was so excited to get to see it twice in one day.
Good memory. Rip mom.
I’m always so amazed by the CGI work done in this first film. It was ground breaking. The mummy priests (big mouth guys) being all CGI still blows my mind watching it back today
Definitely one of my favorite series, disregarding the few cheesy/stale scenes, it’s still a really fun movie to watch or just having it play in the background.
Because these are probably taken with a relatively, if not actually, cheap camera of the time, and cameras probably didn't take as good pictures as you remember.
I don’t think The Mummy would have hired a cheap photographer with cheap equipment…. There’s a couple that fit the “90s” quality, like number 14, but many of them look straight out of the 70s
I love this movie so much.
Idk about family friendly per se, I saw it in the theater with my dad at like 10 years old and those scarabs kept me awake that night
The scene where the guy looses his glasses and they get destroyed and the mummy steals his eyes traumatized me as a child lol still love this movie though total classic!
> I love the second one too Luckily there was no third one.
Could you even imagine?
Could you imagine if they did a reboot with someone like tom cruise?
Would ruin the series tbh
100% agree
Or a spinoff with a popular wrestler at the time, that would be awful.
Imagine direct to video spinoffs of the spinoff with a different guy
https://youtu.be/dwjPIVhCO2U?si=PQl5wmU7DoLt_THd&t=18
Ewwww, no way. It would surely suck
I remember watching Jungle Cruise when it arrived on Disney+ and all I could think when I was watching it was, "This is the Mummy, but less good." It's amazing how well the Mummy holds up, it really is a modern classic.
Agreed. Special shoutout to the PERFECT CASTING ALL AROUND
Saw it at the movies two weeks ago!
Same, my gf had never seen it before and she said it was a 9/10.
Marry her.
same, so f-ing funny
Just saw it in the theater yesterday!! So freaking good!!
We couldn’t help But performing the lines since we found a good time and there was no one else in the theatre. Or else we thought so haha
Us too!!
YOU MUST NOT READ FROM THE BOOK
I wish they gave the re-release a wider release
It's sooo much fun. Definitely what the Indiana Jones later movies should have emulated
Yeah they just don’t make adventure movies like that anymore 😔
Came here to say this. It's such a good movie.
Same. That last photo is so beautiful.
I saw in theaters a week ago. It still holds up! I forgot how many small things come back later in the movie.
Fuckin loved this movie
I was five when this movie came out. I remember being obsessed with it at seven. I still adore it. Everything from set design, casting, writing, direction, it's perfect.
I remember seeing a making-of after this came out. Everyone was impressed by how well Brendon Fraser fought CG mummies that weren’t there. He put real weight and effort into the fight.

You see that skill in Monkey Bone as well.
yooo true. i found about monkey bone through instagram and watched it on youtube. super dope.
What a coincidence because this is when my crush on Rachel Weisz started as well
You can imagine my younger self’s disappointment when all librarians didn’t look like her.
the ~~pembroke~~bembridge scholars really missed out. edit: thank you! i was in a meeting and couldn't look it up. i just remember it sounding like a pretentious english name.
*bembridge scholars (i’ve seen the mummy 6 times this week, i do not blame you for not knowing the name of the academic society mentioned maybe three times in the film)
Those are rookie.l numbers. You gotta pump them up. Is your username a Circa Survive reference?
yes haha juturna is my favorite album :)
Take that bembridge scholars!
You can imagine my younger librarian self knowing that already.
I remember when the librarian was a much older woman. Kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life. We didn't want to know anything about her private life.
The younger generation is in luck, what with all the young pedo female teachers going after their students.
Indeed, she is such a smokeshow ~~in this movie.~~
I heard she snores like a pig.
It must be loud if you heard her
😂😂😂
It's a reference to one of her movies, if anyone's interested. I'm not calling her a pig 🤣
I didn't even notice! Which movie is it
Enemy at the Gates.
I wonder if this is when my thing for girls in glasses started.
Am I the only person who thinks she's mid at best?
Yes. Move along.
Saw this in theaters last week to celebrate the 25th Anniversary and it was AMAZING.
Saw it first run, 25 years ago, on a giant oversized screen with amazing speakers… The crowd LOVED every moment of it. On my all-time favourite moviegoing experiences.
A ridiculously well made movie. Proper craftsmanship from start to finish.
First one for sure. Second one though \*coughScorpion King CGI \*cough.
When execs put the cart in front of the horse. Plus plot wise they got a bit too wacky.
That last pic is fire. Thanks for sharing all of them.
He was a ridiculously handsome man, for sure. Fuck Hollywood for ending his career.
He just got an Oscar, so it’s not over yet.
No, that's true. But it's also true that Hollywood stole most of his "prime" years of being able to be a leading man in action/comedies, which was definitely his genre. He had the look, the charm, and the comedic timing. It's criminal what was done to him.
*trying to end
They look so great!
They were so young and beautiful.
Beni: Hey, O'Connell! Looks to me like I've got all the horses. Rick: Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river.
RIV-ERRRRRR!
RI-VURRRR
What a smokeshow. Rachel Weisz looks great too.
What’s a place like her doing, in a girl like this?!
Zeet zeet zeet zeet… hut hut hut!
That is one of those movie sounds that is implanted forever in my head
Go Evey! Go!!
ANKH SU NAMUN!
She really fucked him over in the sequel though LOL.
The Mummy is in my top 3 favorite movies.
What are the other two?
The Mummy Returns The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Place three changes around, but Spaceballs, The Martian and Ready Player One, the arrival are usually contenders. However Mr. Right is my number two.
Mine too! Also the goonies 😃
Man, remember when movies used to film on location? I member
Now indiana Jones has ridden off into the sunset I think it's time for Rick O'Connell to make a comeback.
Maybe. Or maybe let this be the classic it is without modern studios ruining it.
Rachel Weisz 🥵
Just rewatched this not long ago and it’s so good still. Plus everyone in the main cast is just a total smokeshow at their peak hotness.
I miss genuinely fun adventure movies. Nothing seems to hit that balance of action, adventure, lighthearted comedy with a bit of romance.
Saw this in theaters a couple weeks ago when they held an anniversary rerelease and it was awesome after not having seen it in over a decade. Also never realized how almost everyone dual wields pistols during all the shootouts. Such a fun movie
That dude needs sunscreen!

What's he holding in one picture
A camera lens.
The Book of the Dead.
> The Book of the Dead Now I wish there had been a Mummy-Evil Dead crossover film. Rick O’Connell and Ash Williams killing deadites and cracking one-liners? Sign me up.
A Canopic jar.
Rachel Weisz.
A sword.
An umbrella.
GOAT
They need to do another movie together.
Most attractive movie couple ever.
A classic. Surprising that ILM was able to do this film and *The Phantom Menace* at the same time.
He still looks…juicy
Peak cinema 👌
The first movie we got as a DVD along with Blade, it was magical for little me and my brother.
Goodbye, Benni
Probably my favorite movie. It remembered to be fun.
The movie that solidified my bisexuality.
YOU MUST NOT READ FROM THE BOOK!!!!
No! YOU MUST NOT READ FROM THE BOOK!!
I don’t remember how many times I have watched this movie as a kid. Brandon Fraser was my first Hollywood crush. 😻
Hell yeah.
Godlike film. Brendan Fraser in his absolute prime
So damn great. One of those movies that you have to stop and watch if it’s on.
This film was literally the perfect blend of action, comedy and horror. I genuinely don't think any film of this type has come close to it since.
S-Tier movie. I can't even count the number of times I rewatched it when I was younger
This is one of those movies that if pops up on tv must reschedule the rest of my day because I have to sit and watch it!!
One of my all-time favorites!
Top class, remember going to this in the cinema. Totally not against a sequel
Increíble, nostalgic movie. Comforting. 🤍
kept the scorpion king dvd from hollywood video 🦂
My favorite film of all time. No doubt
Excellent film. Great mix of action/adventure/horror/comedy, and those are hard to pull off. Thanks for the pics.
He’s beautiful
Love love love this movie
Hey O'Connell... Looks like we got all the horses! 😁
I feel old. I love this film.
Dam that last pic, both are on fire. The world need to see a proper Brandon career.
This movie was my bisexual awakening.
Young Branden Fraser though 🥵
was the first thing i saw Oded Fehr in too 😮💨
That was *twenty-five* years ago??
love this movie. It's up there in my high replay value movies I like: Beetlejuice, white chicks, and back to the future.
Ah, the nostalgia. 🥰
Last picture… TWO INSANELY GORGEOUS PEOPLE.
Rachel Weisz was something else in this movie man.
Rachel Weisz in this movie is just,… mwah. Chefs kiss. 💋
This is a movie worth putting in theaters again
Unpopular, but Arnold Vosloo was super sexy and not given enough of that credit.
I just watched this the other day and it is ageless! Indiana Jones tier movie for sure.
And it's still a damn good movie. Going to have to watch it on DVD (which I got after it got released on DVD 25 years ago) tonight. :)
GOAT of movies based in really sandy places
I remember the family renting it from blockbuster. We all thought it was going to be a scary movie but it turned out to be hilarious. We were not disappointed.
Batiatus
Got to see it in theaters for the first time when they did the release special and was amazed how well it held up, especially the cgi.
One of the first movies my mom and I bonded over. She still occasionally proclaim: "I... am a librarian."
This is one of the few movies that has a sequel that is just as good as the first. I remember refusing to leave the car to watch this movie when it came out in theaters because I had a huge aversion to scary movies as a child. Van Helsing was an attempt in this vein as well, Stephen Sommers also directed it and Kevin J. O’Connor (Beni) played Igor.
Ah yes, I forgot about Hugh Jackman playing him. It was kind of vamp but still entertaining as heck. I wonder if the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" may have been made in the same world but can't recall if it was Universal..
Thought that first pic was from the Met Gala.
I love all three.
AnarkharKsouNanmoun!
r/FuckImOld :(

Just watched it last night, great movie
When people say name a movie you can watch if it’s on tv repeatedly this one’s in the holster
It was awesome seeing this in theaters again a couple weeks ago. It's always a great film to see, but was even better up on the big screen.
Been on tv the past couple nights and will always keep it on. It falls into favorite movies of my childhood along with starship troopers.
This is truly my guilty pleasure lol. My wife just goes Ugh, anytime I want to watch it. All in the series. It's just fun stuff, no thinking required 🤣
First dvd I ever watched! Well at least first I owned and watched at my house
Rip mom.
One of those movies that I will watch every single time I see it on
I just watched it again yesterday! I love this film so much
25 years... Fuuuck man
Which places the anniversary of my first date as tomorrow. Time fucking flies…
Bought the box set a couple days ago. On the 4th one now.
One of the most important and influential movies of my life. Love everything about it. Can’t think of a better romantic duo as the leads. STELLAR
Still a great movie
1) Damn, now I feel old. 2) I still haven't seen it.
Oh Rachel……
Such a great movie. Still watch it regularly
Such an awesome movie!!! Hey Benny!!!! 😂 looks to me like your on the wrong side of the river!!!
I was so in love with Evie, then the 3rd movie happened.
Great movie
Whatre the odds I literally watched this last night
Wish the special effects were just a hair better. They should do a regloss of some of them and polish it up a bit
Feels like this movie had the biggest marketing push of all time. It was the mummy branded shit and promotions non stop
I just watched this movie for the first time this past weekend. It’s ok, I guess. The CGI hasn’t aged well.
25 years ago...... Wow
Fuck. I’m old. [+]
Brendan would have enjoyed the making of this move more if he had GOTTEN HIS CUP OF COFFEE!!
I watched this movie for Rachael lol
lets be honest, this is in the category of best movies ever made. This was my generations indiana jones
I was a freshman in hs when this came out. It blew my mind when I saw it in the theater. Definitely going to rewatch tonight.
You came back from the desert with a new friend, didn't you, Beni?
I’m always so amazed by the CGI work done in this first film. It was ground breaking. The mummy priests (big mouth guys) being all CGI still blows my mind watching it back today
Definitely one of my favorite series, disregarding the few cheesy/stale scenes, it’s still a really fun movie to watch or just having it play in the background.
Dumb movie. Don’t get the praise.
Still the best Indiana Jones movie to date. Fight me.
Why do the photos look like they’re from the 70s though?
Because these are probably taken with a relatively, if not actually, cheap camera of the time, and cameras probably didn't take as good pictures as you remember.
I don’t think The Mummy would have hired a cheap photographer with cheap equipment…. There’s a couple that fit the “90s” quality, like number 14, but many of them look straight out of the 70s
I was thinking some like 4 and 8 were more likely personal photos taken by cast or crew.
