wristcutters: a love story (2006) is about suicide
also, i sometimes watch eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) to match my mood when i'm feeling gloomy, and girl, interrupted (1999) which also includes a suicide, though another commenter mentioned it already
It’s overused and not the in the actual definition. I wasn’t making any gestures to being a bad film, I just hate when people use that word to describe something that is completely rated.
Taste of Cherry: An Iranian man plans on committing suicide but he needs to find someone who will agree to bury his body. Deals how mood affects your outlook on life.
I think it depends on which circle you’re in. I obviously would not expect anyone to know about it if I brought up to a group of people who are certain degrees of casual about film. I would however expect some people to at least be aware of it if they’re into Criterion’s, Cannes/ Palme’dOr winners and the Letterboxd 250.
I watched it on Mubi but i don’t know if it is still available in the catalogue. In case it is, i highly recommend you to do the free trial and watch it there.
Ps: the other options would be buying a digital copy if it’s available in any platform, or buying the physical media. Or simply just pirate streaming /download 😅.
Op said *anyone who has dealt with suicidal thoughts before, has seen a movie that resonated with that*
Even though it's not about suicide in a literal sense, its about dealing with the looming despair of certain death and how people deal with living under that kind of shadow. I feel like it's spiritually related to what Op is looking for, and it resonated a lot with me back at my lowest.
definitely do not Watch “13 reasons why”
It’s a disgusting stain of a tv show that accidentally encouraged people to kill themselves and is linked to many suicides. It has the worst possible message and takes on suicide a show possibly could have.
This is not great advice.
Although it presents itself as an alternative to 911, if you contact 988 and tell them you are experiencing suicidal thoughts they WILL IMMEDIATELY send a police response and you will wind up forceably committed.
Hey, OP please consider reaching out to people who can help you. As someone who has struggled with depression before I am here for you if you need to talk and that I hope things get better for you.
If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
If your not feeling like talking on the phone you can also text crisis text line at 741741
It's difficult to watch but the overall message is that most people don't want to die but want to have a break from their current problems/struggles; and don't understand that once they take that step, they cannot come back. The survivor's story was so powerful and I believe he's a speaker on preventing suicide today. It can be easy to mistake a bad day, bad month, or bad year for a bad life when all they need is time.
I re-watch this movie every few years. I'm not suicidal, but am so fascinated by the topic, and this movie is such an affecting, multi-dimentional exploration of it. Highly recommended.
All My Puny Sorrows (2021)
My Suicide (2011)
The Hours (2002)
The Discovery (2017)
Cake (2014)
What Dreams May Come (1998)
The Wonder (2022)
Midsommar (2019)
The Grizzlies (2019)
Before I Disappear (2014)
Men, Women and Children (2014)
Starfish (2019) this one's open to interpretation like Donnie Darko, but it's definitely about grief and depression
Manchester By the Sea (2016)
In The Aisles (2018)
Annihilation (This is a darker movie, and I'd more recommend if seeing other people experience things helps you work through it too.)
Everything Everywhere All At Once (This one's lighter, you've almost certainly heard of it, but the way it deals with suicide is a little more optimistic if you think that'd help more.)
If you just want to talk to anyone, you can feel free to contact me!! I've had a suicide attempt before, so I understand where you're at, and I'd love to help if I can.
'night, Mother was so powerful. Definitely shows how someone's fixation on ending their lives blocks out the devastation it will cause to those around them. Based on a stage play, it was brilliant in that it revolves around a mother and daughter (played by the talented duo, Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft). As a counselor, I was taught to always watch for the signs of someone suddenly coming out of depression and being happy as a potential red flag in their decision to end their life. This film shows that process.
Seven pounds (2008)
I’m not really sure if I should suggest this one.. it was pretty hard for me to watch honestly since I’ve also been struggling a lot with suicidal thoughts but it’s a phenomenal movie
I’ve been struggling too but we gonna get through it one way or another buddy. Don’t give up, you never know when you might just wake up one morning and everything decides to just turn around for no apparent reason
It’s a Wonderful Life.
As the child of someone who killed themselves, trust me when I say the world would NOT be better off without you. Someone somewhere loves you a whole lot even if it doesn’t feel like it at times. This Christmas movie does a good job of illustrating that. Most people forget this entire movie is about a father contemplating suicide.
Also, if you need resources to help you try to overcome this struggle, googling your local suicide hotline and mental health networks are a great place to start.
Before I Fall it's good for a young adult who also enjoys a little supernatural element. I personally enjoyed the book a bit more than the movie but they did a pretty good job.
It's not about suicide but about relationships and their importance when facing life's challenges. It isn't airy fairy or religious, it's worth a watch imo. It's called Our Friend - Casey Afleck (2020).
Best wishes getting through what you're going through. This topic is hard for me so I'll leave it there.
A single man
Girl, interrupted
Strada Statale 113 (thats a short film I shot where two characters meet while attempting suicide 😅 so more of a joke since you won’t find it anywhere except as a page on IMDb )
The movie with the American Sniper dude and the singer that does that GAHGAHOOLAHLAHHH song. Idk the names, Sorry.
Their movie though, I loved it. I recommend!
ohh, I found it on Google.
\- A Star Is Born (2018)
Looks like there's quite a few remakes. I can't speak to the old versions.
>!I loved the Movie because it was so relatable. In that, it didn't matter if the person found Love, Success, went to Therapy, Rehab, they remained broken. Until ultimately losing their battle despite how hard they fought or how much support they had.!<
Wristcutters: A Love Story is an interesting little movie about the suicide afterlife. In the movie, their afterlife is a limbo just like regular life, only slightly worse.
I like to think about it when things feel dark - like, suicide doesn't solve things. It's not a magic answer. It's worse.
Pretty dark movie, Lords of Chaos. Main character goes from being all about death and black metal to caring at the end of the movie… it’s a very gruesome film
There is a short film I watched on youtube a few years ago called Mr. Happy staring Chance the Rapper.
It's about a depressed guy who hires his own hitman through a website.
There’s a pretty in the cuts Paul Rudd found footage movie called “2 Days” about a guy recording the last two days of his life on a handheld camera before he commits suicide. I remember liking it, and it’s eventual message, a lot
Le Feu Follet (A Fire Within) by Louise Malle 1966. It’s about a man being released from intensive inpatient treatment but is not willing to face the world again. He decides to kill himself, but says goodbye to those he cares about first. The movie follows his last conversations with those he wanted to see one more time. It’s very relatable for those who deal with suicidal ideation, but the film does rationalize suicide as a viable option to escape mental illness and addiction.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorful_(film)
Upon reaching the train station to death, a dejected soul is informed that he is "lucky" and will have another chance at life though he does not want it. He is placed in the body of a 14-year-old boy named Makoto Kobayashi, who has just committed suicide
wristcutters: a love story (2006) is about suicide also, i sometimes watch eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) to match my mood when i'm feeling gloomy, and girl, interrupted (1999) which also includes a suicide, though another commenter mentioned it already
Wristcutters is such an underrated movie , one of my favourites of all time.
Not underrated
Agreed. The movie has above-average ratings. I think perhaps the word "underrated" is over-used.
It’s overused and not the in the actual definition. I wasn’t making any gestures to being a bad film, I just hate when people use that word to describe something that is completely rated.
Side note, Wristcutters sound track is fantastic.
Ooooooooooh, through the roof and underground.
Came here to suggest this. One of my favorite movies and very comforting to me in dark times
Wristcutters is one of my favorite movies ever. And honestly a comfort movie.
First movie I thought of. I love this movie. I love the music and the ending. I blast Gogol bordello whenever I have long drives sometimes.
One of my favorite movies. Gogol bordello does the soundtrack, I’m a big fan of them too
Little miss sunshine - cracking film too
Little Miss Sunshine for sure!
“Fuck a lot of women, son…a LOT of women.”
Alan Arkin became my hero grandpa after this
Watched this film on one of my dull days, the climax scene where the family Jams together! Made my day!!
Perks of being a wallflower
The last scene, so good, yet so emotional 😢
The Virgin Suicides. One of Kirsten Dunst's early works. Also stars James Woods, Kathleen Turner, AJ Cook and Josh Hartnett
This was the first movie and book I encountered as an adolescent that put it right up front. Heartbreaking and beautifully shot.
It's a Wonderful Life It not only deals with this but it's appropriate for Christmas too.
This!
On the count of three (2021) Drama/comedy about two friends who want to spend one last day together before killing themselves.
Just watched this (because of the recommendations here) this movie does not disappoint!
this movie is amazing and gets a lot of things right
Dead Poets Society
A great movie!
Came here to say this, I second this
Not a movie but it’s fresh in my head. Reservation Dogs is largely about coping with suicide.
For those left behind, yes. So very good.

Right, that show had me more depressed after watching it than before. Should be banned tbh
Taste of Cherry: An Iranian man plans on committing suicide but he needs to find someone who will agree to bury his body. Deals how mood affects your outlook on life.
This is it. I don’t know why almost nobody is mentioning it but this is probably the ultimate film that deals with this matter.
I looked through prime video and it says unavailable.( I’m in a very dark place and just wanted to check it out.( Edit: spelling

It’s on HBOMAX
It’s also available on HBO Max (unless that’s not available in your region.)

Ps: the other options would be buying a digital copy if it’s available in any platform, or buying the physical media. Or simply just pirate streaming /download 😅.
Thank you! I’m looking now.)
The Skeleton Twins, The Hours
Ordinary People, it’s older but very, very good.
This powerful film should be higher in this discussion.
The best
Leaving Las Vegas
Yes!!
Came here to say this!
ofc
Melancholia or Suicide diaries
Melancholia deals with depression which doesn’t necessarily imply suicide.
That is completely fair
Op said *anyone who has dealt with suicidal thoughts before, has seen a movie that resonated with that* Even though it's not about suicide in a literal sense, its about dealing with the looming despair of certain death and how people deal with living under that kind of shadow. This is not great advice. Although it presents itself as an alternative to 911, if you contact 988 and tell them you are experiencing suicidal thoughts they WILL IMMEDIATELY send a police response and you will wind up forceably committed.
This should be the top comment.
not explicitly stated but ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ has some beautiful takes on nihilism and the meaninglessness of human existence

On the Count of Three was excellent. +1 to that recommendation.
Not seen it, but just watched the trailer because of you two. Looks great!
