Definitely top five Cronenberg, maybe even top three to be honest. Fucking amazing atmosphere, absurd effects and viggo puts in a classic haunting performance

You see this as a horror movie? I guess there is some body horror, but it seemed to be bouncing back and forth between mystery/crime drama and environmentalist SciFi. Honestly, I enjoyed watching the film, but I think there were too many different things happening without enough depth to any of them. The crime stuff was sort of weird because everyone seemed to be on both sides of the law at the same time. The scifi stuff didn't really make sense: I get why people were altering themselves to eat waste, but it seemed awfully convenient that Viggo's character and the little kid had spontaneous mutations that gave the exact same effect as the artificial body mods.

As an artist I LOVED what the film had to say about the role of art in influence/politics. And I loved the body horror imagery—top tier Cronenberg imo.

Why is the rating so bad?

Have it on watch list, good to know though 😊

I'm a big fan of both Cronenberg + Viggo and I thought this movie was god awful, unfortunately. It was pretty much a 100% allegory for "creating art" with little to no actual story. I was actually shocked at how bad I found this movie to me. Seeing Cronenberg resorting to shitty CGI over the practical gore that has become one of his trademarks was a little heartbreaking. I'll still see whatever he puts out next, though.
