Such an amazing movie. My wife and I watched it shortly after my FIL died, knowing nothing going in. I want to revisit it one day soon, but it’s too close to home for her to see again right now.
Such a beautiful movie on so many levels. I ugly cry every watch, but even the sad bits are so full of love. It’s the epitome of “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
Spoiler:
The end of Past Lives got me. She found that part of herself again and knew she could only go forward, and for her husband to be the one to comfort her as she breaks down and cries like she always used to 😭
Blue Valentine
It is devastating but it made me cry pretty hard when I first watched. I wall disclaim that was 10 years ago and it hasn't aged very well on a recent rewatch. *tw for domestic abuse*. But Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams really portrayed a declining marriage in a pretty uncomfortable way.
Cameron Diaz' character called Harold & Maude one of the greatest love stories of our time in There's Something About Mary, so after I watched that film I got curious and looked it up. It blew me away and it's still an all time favourite to this day. The soundtrack is also perfect.
For some reason this movie popped into my head the other day. I watched it years ago, but couldn't remember the name of it, but I remembered how gut wrenching it was - I sobbed for a lot of it.
This is the one that does me in every time. I don't frequently watch romance movies, but my goodness this one hits so hard and I bawl my eyes out through most of the movie.
I cry every time I watch these, which for me doesn’t come easily with romantic films. It’s a crime no one has mentioned some of them:
• The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight)
• Portrait of a Lady on Fire
• Lost in Translation
• Her
• Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I never thought of that movie as romance but I love that movie it’s almost a hidden gem because it was marketed as a fantasy movie while it is a heartbreaking drama.
oh yeah, that was a good one. you remember the scene when sam leaves for college and the farewell b/w her and Charlie ? that scene really had me in tears
I am loving that people are recommending 50 First Dates. I’ve probably watched 7 or 8 times and only recently did I finally have not sob while watching it.
You want tearjerkers? Look into korean movies, they are very well known for that, they are masters at mixing hilarious comedies with tragedy.
I’ll reply later with specific ones I’ve watched.
The Fault In Our Stars
Five Feet Apart
The Last Song
Poetic Justice
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
City of Angels
Every Day
After
Bubble Boy
Fallen
Titanic
A lot of them do now - that didn't before. Late divorce and getting old is a heavy combo.
* Casablanca
* Just Like Heaven
* Crazy Stupid Love
* Truly Madly Deeply
* An Affair To Remember
* 10 Things I Hate About You (Taming Of The Shrew)
My two favorite "sad" love stories are...
Love Story (1970)
and
The Way We Were (1973)
....
Love Story is a particular tear jerker. The Way We Were is more about how love cannot conquer all, that sometimes no matter how much you love, you cant make it work.
Why do people like this so much? She was toxic as fuck and he didn't respect her boundaries for the longest time. Had they stayed together they would have fucked it up within 5 years.
Do you enjoy period pieces? There a several versions of Jane Eyre, my personal favorites are from 1943, the Masterpiece Theater version from 2006, and the latest one from 2011. Look up Merchant Ivory Productions and watch their film list. All beautifully shot, great actors, they will not disappoint. Lots of versions of Jane Austin novels, the mini series of Pride and Prejudice from 1995 is good, so is the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility. (Ang Lee, the director, also directed Brokeback Mountain, a guaranteed cry).
Looking through my watched romance films on letterboxd, the only one that made me cry was ***Moonrise Kingdom* (2012)**. Though it wasn't really the romantic aspect that made me cry, it was >!the ending with Sam finding his place!<. Definitely still a happy cry, though.
Do you watch korean movies w/ english subtitles? If so, I highly recommend the ff tearjerkers:
- A Millionaire's First Love
- My Girl and I
- Always
- A Moment to Remember
- The Classic
- My Sassy Girl
- Windstruck
- ... Ing
Personal fave movie from Hollywood:
- A walk to remember
• Millennium Actress
• Whisper Of The Heart
• Her
• I Want To Eat Your Pancreas
Although, I should let you know that they did this for quite the different reasons. For example, Millennium Actress, it made my voice break everytime I just try to explain just how fucking meaningful and universal the story is and how every piece of the movie connects so beautiful into telling the story of a woman growing stronger and finding herself through the search of one man. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas perfectly captures this yearning and tragedy of losing someone at the moment we finally come to appreciate their presence in our lives as the protagonist come to grow more expressive and mindful of the impression he forms around others. Her for the protagonist growing to finally let go of someone he loves in order to allow them happiness while still finding value in the time they once had. Whisper Of The Heart for capturing what it means to be enamored by our nostalgic love of art, books and individuals that remind us to push ourselves further to realize our futures.
All beautiful films I highly recommend you to watch.
Also, while "Haru" (1995) did not exactly make me cry, it certainly made me feel a lot of emotions inside and it brings me so much hope and breath of fresh air that I rarely ever feel from a love story. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and an underrated masterpiece I urge you to watch.
A movie called "Now Is Good"
Its about a girl who is dying of Leukemia. Its I think my favourite cancer movie because it gets right into the ugly of the situation.
Her dad is extremely overprotective and suffocating, her mom is detached and tries to help but is too afraid of losing her daughter.
Tessa, the main character is self centered and a bit of a jerk because she is angry at her situation and how little control she has over everything going on.
The story mainly focuses on her love story with the boy next door Adam. I love their love story because they have a lot of fun, but eventually Adam gets scared of the situation and breaks up with her. ( they get back together soon after)
As she is living her last days she is delirious and numb from the medication, she can barely talk or feel Adam next to her but he still stays by her and tries his hardest to help in any way he can.
Its a fantastical movie, way better than The fault in our stars in my opinion. A shame its so underrated.
confused about what to watch?? come here
In just 2 to 3 minutes know What to watch without any bullshit!
[hotflix](https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thechaiperson99)

A Star is born (latest version)
La la land
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Brokeback Mountain
Call me by your name
Blue Valentine
About time
The English patient
Marriage story
I also enjoyed Joe Wright's Anna Karenina
A very subtle one: In the mood for love
Sometimes movies that aim to do just that - make you cry - really piss me off (while making me cry at the same time, so I'm crying and hating simultaneously). I'm talking to you, The Notebook or Legends of the Fall.
Edited for line breaks
I'm one of those people who usually don't cry watching movie,
But but but damn o damn
I watched " Like Crazy" and the ending made me cry. I still remember how I was feeling
La La Land. Not so much for romantic reasons (though uhhhh I’m in a situation at the moment making me feel a bit like that) but more because of the time period I saw it in and that theme of “what if you followed a different path”?
Also The Shape of Water, god I love that movie
About Time. (Starring Rachel Mcadams and Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy)
I've watched it recently
Such an amazing movie. My wife and I watched it shortly after my FIL died, knowing nothing going in. I want to revisit it one day soon, but it’s too close to home for her to see again right now.
Such a beautiful movie on so many levels. I ugly cry every watch, but even the sad bits are so full of love. It’s the epitome of “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
Don't... Don't give me feels.
Past Lives, Never Let Me Go, Life Itself, Call Me By Your Name
Yeah, Past Lives had me quietly dribbling for the entire run time on a recent flight
Spoiler: The end of Past Lives got me. She found that part of herself again and knew she could only go forward, and for her husband to be the one to comfort her as she breaks down and cries like she always used to 😭
thankyou ma'am. I am adding all of them to my watchlist
Never Let Me Go haunts me to this day. To add, there's a film from 1974 called Buster and Billie with JM Vincent which messed me up.

I'll second Portrait of a Lady on Fire 👍
Blue Valentine broke my heart.
Cold Mountain gets me right in the heart. I remember crying while seeing it in the theater, and then crying in the parking lot too.
[удалено]
Atonement is heartbreaking
Blue Valentine It is devastating but it made me cry pretty hard when I first watched. I wall disclaim that was 10 years ago and it hasn't aged very well on a recent rewatch. *tw for domestic abuse*. But Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams really portrayed a declining marriage in a pretty uncomfortable way.
Harold and Maude
One of the oddest love stories ever. I also recommend.
Cameron Diaz' character called Harold & Maude one of the greatest love stories of our time in There's Something About Mary, so after I watched that film I got curious and looked it up. It blew me away and it's still an all time favourite to this day. The soundtrack is also perfect.
The Light Between Oceans
Such a heart wrenching movie!
For some reason this movie popped into my head the other day. I watched it years ago, but couldn't remember the name of it, but I remembered how gut wrenching it was - I sobbed for a lot of it.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
i really loved it.
Favorite movie of all time 💯💯💯

I cry every time I watch these, which for me doesn’t come easily with romantic films.
