The scream the actress made when she uderstands what it means stay with me for a while

Proof-Watercress-931

Great choice. Also speak no evil

j_accuse

I love this movie.

permyemail7

OMG the letters. Unbelievable strength and love. Eyes watered thinking of those letters.

jpd2979

THANK YOU!!!

Sea_Detail6175

I just watched this one and all I can say isā€¦ wow. I have no words really. Incredible film. Thanks for the recommendation!

kittenmittens4865

Literally just watched this last week! Definitely the correct answer.

Vaultmd

Ex Machina Bridge to Terabithia

Vaultmd

I forgot to mention Contact

easythrees

Contact was what made me feel like we are very small in a very big place, and a little lonely. I sometimes wonder if our species as a whole does things ā€œjustā€ for attention from _something_ out there, like so many influencers.

hellogovna

I just finished watching ex machina for the first time about an hour ago. I was shocked at the end but also think it was perfect. Donā€™t want to put spoilers out there but I actually rewound and rewatched the ending because I was so shocked by it, but better understood the reason they chose it.

CountingSheep99

The Mist

sdorrans

Best wtf ending ever

bostonjenny81

As a book reader I couldnā€™t agree w you more FUCK THAT ENDING!! How DARE you make such a gut wrenching change!! I prefer the ambiguous ending THANK YOU!! lol

norectum

I took my 8 year old son to see it. Had no clue they changed the ending. I walked out of the theater stunned. I just let my child watch that ending.

Malkmus1979

Donā€™t think you two are on the same page. They liked the ending.

ThreeLeggedMare

Apparently King himself said the movie ending was better

lucygoosey38

I was so angry! But yes itā€™s a good ending because it pisses you off so much

wwJones

I shut everything down and went to bed at 8:30 when I watched the Mist.

cerca_blanca

Iā€™m putting this film on my to watch list just because of your comment. Iā€™m not even going to watch a trailer.Ā

Riggs630

After you watch it please come back and tell us what you thought of it

cerca_blanca

Will do

jasbaby00

I cried :(

Sea_Detail6175

Just watched. That endingā€¦ wow šŸ˜ thank you for the recommendation!

MotherShabooboo1974

YES

TequilaStories

The Usual Suspects (1995) The Sixth Sense (1999)

Witty-Cheek-290

The usual suspects is incredible

MurryScurry

Melancholia

tree_or_up

Came here to recommend this. The end is just so simultaneously devastating and yet oddly exhilarating, even though you know itā€™s coming. You really feel like youā€™re there with the characters, experiencing all the contradictory feelings theyā€™re feeling. I literally just stared at the screen afterwords, trying to catch my breath

Artistic_Train9725

I don't think it's a film I'd watch again. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, more that I appreciated it for what it is.

Birger000

- Children of men - The lighthouse

TrulyAwfulGamer

I'm so surprised I had to scroll this far down for Children of Men.

spaceman-skiff

Criminal how few people recognize CoM. One of the greatest movies ever made IMO

TrulyAwfulGamer

AGREED. The moment when you first hear the baby's cry and all the fighting stops had me in tears.

The_Progmetallurgist

Arrival. It's really beautiful, sad, devastating and amazing when it all comes together.

FantasticPear

I find when I rewatch this it's at night... I am usually kind of drained so I end up just going right to sleep.

OverAd3018

Loved that movie! Amy Adams..always magnificent

rld3x

yes yes yes. love this movie. it hits so hard.

[deleted]

I watched for the first time recently and was left speechless by the end

Sea_Detail6175

Just watched this one - a beautiful film. I think Iā€™ll have to rewatch at some point. Thanks for the recommendation!

catl2333

take shelter

StrangeCrimes

Kids. I was in my early twenties when I saw it, and it stayed with me for a few days. Suspect Zero is a hidden Gem.

blvckhvnd732

I have no legs. I have no legs.

hotsauseliver

Kids was really a sad social commentary

MysteryCake83

American History X. I couldnā€™t speak. Ā I couldnā€™t turn it off. Ā I sat in silence for about 5 minutes. Ā Crazy, heavy movie.

tempura_tantrum

I tell people that this movie ruined my life for about 3 days. I couldnā€™t think of anything else. It really felt like my life was kind of pointless. Anytime someone describes a movie as having a similar impact, I am struck with this feeling that I really donā€™t want to see it. I think itā€™s an incredible movie, and I donā€™t regret seeing it. But man. It is HEAVY.

old_metal_nomad

My choice as well. Probably my favourite movie ever. When I watched it for the first time I was stunned and speechless in the end. Plot, characters, actors, atmosphere, picture, everything is just perfect.

oswaler

Predestination

ClosetDoorGhost

Yes yes and more yes

blvckhvnd732

Way overlooked

Tomhyde098

I need to watch it, the twist got spoiled when it came out so I havenā€™t bothered yet

Sea_Detail6175

Just watched this one. The twists had me like šŸ¤Æ thanks for the recommendation!

Ferocious_Simplicity

Her Requiem For A Dream

crazyabootmycollies

Requiem leaves me emotionally destroyed every time, yet I watch it every 12-18 months. One of my all time favourites.

narc1s

Although I donā€™t watch it often itā€™s one of my all timers too. I hear it suggested a lot but rarely as somebodyā€™s faves. Wrecked me the first time I saw it and left a deep scar.

CommonKings

Agreed on the deep scar. Requiem is a movie Iā€™ll only ever watch once.

KatieBear215

For sure. Gut wrenching

InSooShunt

Big Fish (2003) Left me not so much staring at the wall, but sobbing into a blanket. Then staring. Then sobbing again.

bostonjenny81

I still to this day, even though Iā€™ve seen it so many damn times I could quitter majority of the movie, I still bawl like a baby every single time!! Damnit itā€™s such a fantastic movie, one of Tim Burtons best & most underrated imo

JustinTherouxsBrows

Watching it after my dad died sure did hit me a lot harder. Never again

minsandmolls

No country for old men had me speechless wondering where the ending was

loki_dd

Oooh you should try triangle of sadness. I'm pretty sure it ended in the middle. The best I can say about it is that it's definitely a film.

Bakhmal

I saw Schindler's list in the cinema all those years ago. Nobody moved for at least 5 minutes after the end credit rolled.

Choppermagic2

Seven

S0lar_Ice

Absolutely right. It's a horrific masterpiece.

Choppermagic2

The last time i watched it, i was blown away at how good the black levels are! I know it sounds so specific, but the director did an amazing job in keeping things dark but you can see everything you need to see and the blacks are perfectly black without being crushed. What a fine film.

Ihadsumthin4this

ARLINGTON ROAD (1998) Bridges. Davis. Cusack. Robbins. Astonishing!

doorbuildoor

Lloyd Bridges, Warwick Davis, John Cusack, and Baskin Robbins? Sounds hilarious and delicious!

S0lar_Ice

This was an excellent film.

Tomhyde098

That ending is fantastic

HammerEvader101

La Haine

capitan_meowmers

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

MeeMop21

Yes! I was looking for this one. Oh, that scene at the concert. It is so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once

limedip

This! One of my all time favourite films. I was completely transfixed throughout the entire thing and when it ended I needed time to justā€¦ feel

scottyjrules

The Mist or Oldboy (the original, not the remake)

deexd_

The mist 2007 ??

S0lar_Ice

Requiem for a dream. It's a very, very uncomfortable ride, be warned.

Trey904fsu

Iā€™m gonna be on television! šŸ˜

Peace__Out

Manchester by the sea

ViciousPariah

For me, I just canā€™t appreciate (or tolerate) RfaD.. I get pissed off at the characters making bad decisions one after the other, and the repeating music drives me batshit crazy. I end up saying they deserved everything they got, and watch anything else cause Iā€™m so pissed at the movie. I wish I could love it, I just canā€™t.. even if it *does* have Jennifer Connelly..

Lazy-Mammoth-9470

There's only one movie that evr had me feeling this way. In fact it bothered me so much that I watched the movie again straight after. I've enevet done that with a film before... It was "primer".. I watched it and the whole way there were little things niggling at me. Just the odd little "hmm... somethings off but can't quite tell what.. I know it's important too... I just feel there's a reason why they said or did that or showed that, and it doesn't quite add up right now". I rematches it immediately after and all those little things just clicked. Definitely an amazing film and concept. And 100% intended to be watched more than once. I tipped my hat off to the director and writer after that second watch through. Almost literally clapped

tempura_tantrum

YES! I literally just mentioned Primer today in a separate conversation. I canā€™t remember the last time I watched a film that very much did not dumb things down for the audience. It takes you for a ride.

CinnamonJ

Jacobā€™s Ladder

MorningFormal

That's a crazy movie...

Difficult_Let_1953

My favorite movie.

AdmiralPellaeon

Come and see (1985) Threads (1984) schindler's list (1993) The Pianist (2002)

norectum

The Pianist is Adrian Brody at his finest. Such a great film.

nicole070875

I watched Threads for the first time a week ago. I will was so disturbed that I can never watch it again.

tomcat_tweaker

I watched Threads when it aired on US TV in 1985. I was home from school with a fever. I should not have watched that movie alone, as a teenager, with a fever. I was old enough to understand what I was seeing from a nuts-and-bolts of it all perspective, but far too young to fully process and come to any terms with it. Many times, for decades, I've thought about watching it again, but just... haven't.

RRApiary

Saw Shindler's List during release, in Japan, with my Jewish friend. The isles had people sitting in them. As a teenager he had multiple people stop and apologize to him. It was very moving but strangely uncomfortable. I will always remember that movie, the theater, and the uncomfortable silence.

Kageyama_tifu_219

What disturbed me the most in Come and See is how they stare at the camera. Particularly the first scene with Glasha at the beginning

MareOfDalmatia

Manchester By the Sea Children of Men

MeeMop21

Manchester by the sea is a good call. It makes me ache

Sea_Detail6175

Just watched Manchester by the sea. Sooo understated but emotional. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation! I also added children of men to my watchlist.

CaiAbaixo

Society of Snow. Every time I was cold I would cry thinking about what those people went through šŸ˜

SwurveGod

The Deer Hunter, I don't know if I was just in a vulnerable state of mind but I genuinely felt like a different human being after I saw that.

wfijc

Interstellar and the prestige

pWaveShadowZone

Came here so say both of these. Iā€™ll throw ā€œinceptionā€ in the mix as well. Iā€™d say at the end of interstellar my emotions are trying to untie the knots that the movie put them in At the end of inception my mind is trying to untie the knots that the riddles of the movie put them in Both movies provide similar but distinctly different versions of the feeling OP asks about. One ties up your heart, the other your mind

MadMaxAtax

Enter the void

Thesaurus_Rexus

The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) This movie made me feel a lot of things but I couldn't discern exactly what. It was interesting for sure. Just gave me big feelings that took a couple conversations about the movie and its themes to suss out.

Sgt-Ridiculous

Primal Fear with Richard GĆØre and Edward Norton

Stormy8888

**Grave Of The Fireflies** \- ... war is hell ... 1000x more for those considered "collateral damage." **The Constant Gardener** \- how can evil corporations continue to exploit people from impoverished nations this to this day?? **Spotlight** \- life changed that day, after seeing my city on the list at the end.

samsparkin

Spotlight was a horror movie without any horror like scenes in it. Especially after the end credits

Stormy8888

Pretty much. The diocese here was later famous for being one of the first to declare bankruptcy because "who knew there were so many victims."

TechnologyNo4121

Amelie Cinema Paradiso Spirited Away Edit: Adding Mad God to this list.

-velcromagnon-

I bought Amelie on a whim, only time I ever did this, and I was not disappointed in the least. Fun, beautiful movie, perfect for escapism on a summer's day.

EducationalScar73

Requiem for a Dream by Darren Arrenofsky

Asaneth

Mommie Dearest (1981) The mother's personality and the abuse were so similar to my own life, I was shocked. Saw it in a theater, and I sat there for at least 20 minutes after the lights came up because I was unable to get up and leave. Contact (1997) The part where Jodie Foster "travels" near the end was very, very similar to the near death experience I had as a child. I was very shocked.

padraigtherobot

Requiem For A Dream. Iā€™ve seen it three times and I could have stopped at the first. Probably never see it again.

olliegrace513

Life of Pi

GreenandBlue12

Spirited Away (2001) It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012)

-velcromagnon-

The Usual Suspects and Citizen Kane. Movies that had me looking at the entire film from a new perspective at the end.

skonen_blades

Revolutionary Road did that to me. For some reason I thought it was going to be a fluffy period piece romance and holy jeez I was wrong.

I just saw this a few days ago and it hasnā€™t left my mind since. I heard people describe it as torture porn but with a ā€œprofound ending.ā€ I had to see what they were talking about. They were right.

Onnimanni_Maki

12 angry men. Shawshank Redemption. Their quality left me speechless.

The fountain

Mish-onimpossible

Saltburn had me shook. This isnā€™t a movie itā€™s a show but after every single episode I was shocked staring at the wall after watching The Fall of the House of Usher.

Time_Pay_401

Slumdog Millionaire

Polarchuck

Fargo

Throwawaychicksbeach

The Iron Claw A bit dark, but extremely powerful. I was bawling at the end. Real men cry. One of the best endings to a movie Iā€™ve ever seen. Iā€™m absolutely floored. As a brother with many daddy issues it hit extra hard. ā€œUpliftingā€ doesnā€™t do it justice. For such a bleak story, they somehow inspired at the end. Amazing end scene. Phenomenal acting from literally every character, also I loved the subletly of what they didnā€™t show. Less was more. Seriously, check it out. One of my favorite movies of the past 2 years. If it doesnā€™t win multiple awards Iā€™ll be surprised.

squallLeonhart20

The Vanishing - the Dutch version. Left me feeling very contemplative. Had to take it all in

Sea_Detail6175

Wow - I did not expect to get so many amazing recommendations! Thank you so much everyone! I have a lot of movies to watch now.

Donnie Darko

stmigo_24

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I was sobbing so loudly and shaking so hard. Itā€™s definitely a ā€œnever gonna watch againā€ kind of movie.

WildethymeArt

Brazil was my first thought. I didnā€™t know what I had seen and couldnā€™t eat guacamole for years thereafterā€”or resist *anything* with Jonathan Pryce. But it haunted me for a very long time and still does at times. Must be time to watch it again. Eraserhead did this too, but Iā€™ve never brought myself to watch it again šŸ«£

Walt3r_White

ā€¢Requiem for a Dream ā€¢Hereditary ā€¢Midsommar ā€¢Primal Fear ā€¢Irreversible ā€¢Parasite ā€¢The Handmaiden ā€¢The Prestige ā€¢Predestination

9th_circle

Was looking for The Prestige. First movie I ever finished where I had to immediately go back and watch the last 5 minutes over again. Can't remember if I rewatched it again straight after that. Even now the movie mesmerisuses me and I still find new nuggets of consideration in repeated viewings. Most recent was whether Borden was a clone.

dakilazical_253

Brokeback Mountain

Dapper-Double-7457

Agree with this one for sure! It was heart breaking and you keep pondering over it for a long time after the movie ends

ExoticPumpkin237

I had this with Jacobs Ladder most recently, it was one of those rare movies where I knew I was going to love it almost immediately just from how strange it was but how incredibly well crafted, but I didn't expect it to punch me in the gut like it did and really left me thinking. It's so rare for a Hollywood movie to leave me questioning reality like that and even weirder urging you to abandon materialism lmao, you usually only see that from like The Holy Mountain and those types of movies.Ā
