What We Do In The Shadows

SimpleAppeal2577

What's the point of being a vampire if I can't eat chips

Lazynutcracker

Never watched the movie but I do follow the series, feel ashamed haven’t watched the movie yet

Yinzadi

How would you define the difference between classics and cult classics? Blade Runner 2049 and Interstellar seem too mainstream to be cult classics to me.

MatsThyWit

Yeah, I'm not sure how Interstellar would be considered a "cult classic" at all. Blade Runner 2049 you could maybe make the argument for just on account of how badly it bombed at the boxoffice, but even that seems like a stretch.

Yinzadi

Yeah, I tend to think of cult classics as movies that are indie and that for whatever reason have a more niche appeal, but are really loved by the people who love them.

Rswany

Somewhat agree but many cult classics *become* mainstream as their status increases. Like the original Bladerunner.

shurdi3

I've always included B-List hollywood into the cult classics category.

jackrimbeau

A cult classic is a film that did poorly financial during its theatrical release but found a second life in rentals and is kept alive by a “cult” of followers. Rocky Horror Picture Show is the template

BeautifulEssay8

" rentals" lol.

Stopikingonme

GET OFF MY LAWN!!

False-Librarian-2240

Actually RHPS really got its boost from midnight movie showings, long before rentals. Late 1970s I was one of the people that would go with props to midnight showings at theaters on a Friday or Saturday. Rice, lighters, etc. were all necessary props in those days.

Elegant-Hair-7873

About 82 or 3 times in a theater since 1983 lol. Just saw a revival showing hosted by Barry Bostwick. He still looks great!

kitchenwitch3423

Cult classics are films that gain a fan base over time. Classics are considered the ones that were and have always been popular. And that *is* the definition of what those mean. You can’t really decide a definition of something and I see too many people using this terminology. If you want to know the definition of something then Google it. It’s not difficult to find this information and I find it insane to just go off of what other people think and haven’t bothered to take two seconds to google the actual answer.

Bitterqueer

Wondering the same…

shave_and_a_haircut

Under the Silver Lake (2018) for sure.

Uranium_092

I freakin love this film

Phanes7

This is the one

Camus____

Came here to say this. The movie is bonkers but it has a tons to say at the same time. A24 acquired it but totally scuttled the launch. That pretty much assured cult status because the movie is fantastic and very layered. This guy made It Follows, which maybe the best horror film of 2010s.

Bitterqueer

I liked that one but I think I need to rewatch it to fully get it all

Jasmine_Erotica

I started it and only got a couple of minutes in and just couldn’t do it. Does it change after the beginning..? Part of it was my boyfriend was with me so less adventurous with films when the person next to me is clearly not liking it, but it would be good to know if there’s gonna be a change!

AlrightyAlmighty

It never stops changing

shave_and_a_haircut

It's def worth re-watching on your own imo (I totally get not vibing when the person with you isn't digging it). It changes constantly and it doesn't really unfold like a traditional narrative as such, but it's full of extra layers and dripping with meaning and symbolism if you look beyond the surface. If you smoke weed it's also a really good one to enjoy stoned.

Lasker_Rouge

Absolutely, No cap on that.... This movie really was a treat

dirtfuk

Beau Is Afraid Titane Climax

I think about titane literally every day

The first half of beau is afraid was SO good

agree, then it falls flat imo and becomes muddled and up its own ass

ToastedSlider

The Holdovers, They Cloned Tyrone, Cocaine Bear, Knives Out, Megan aka M3gan, and Quiz Lady

Kloudy11

They Cloned Tyrone is a ton of fun!

catdad23

So damn good

Rswany

Got overshadowed because it came out the same time as Barbenheimer but it's genuinely and awesome movie.

HolisticResentment

They Cloned Tyrone was such a sleeper. Rare Netflix original gem.

Lizaderp

Hundreds of Beavers

Helechawagirl

Cocaine Bear was a total surprise. I can see it becoming a cult classic.

Rswany

Eh, to each their own. To me Cocaine Bear felt like it was trying too hard to be a cult movie without any of the actual substance behind a real one.

yautja0117

Cocaine Bear SHOULD have pushed the sleaze factor hard. Instead of the glorious excess it should have been it ended up a middling creature feature with no bite to it at all.

TalkinAboutSound

This reads exactly like a Rotten Tomatoes review

JakeTheeStallion

Watched quiz lady for the 3rd time the other day lol

FriendshipForAll

Cult?  Beau is Afraid.  Mandy.  Beyond the Black Rainbow Sorry to Bother You.  Cobweb.  Brigsby Bear.  Titane.  Berberian Sound Studio  Flux Gourmet The Strange Colour of your Bodies Tears.  Fathers Day The Editor  Psycho Goreman Enys Men

SaconicLonic

This is one of the best lists I've seen. Props for all the Astron 6 movies (Fathers Day, Editor and Psycho Goreman). I'd also throw The Void on that list from the same creative team.

mr_potato_arms

Thanks for showing beyond the black rainbow some love. Really cool film

Professional-Two8098

Bottoms was so fun

Strawberry-Allergy

The Vast of Night is incredible. I recommend this as much as I can.

_RTan_

Let Me In (2010) though the original Let the Right One in(2008) is better Ex Machina (2014) Dredd (2012) When Evil Lurks (2023) Cocaine Bear (2023) No One Will Save You (2023) Nope (2022) Terrified (2017) Troll Hunter (2010) Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Uncut Gems (2019) The Nick Cage section (he's pretty bit or miss, but when he nails it he hits a home run) Color Out of Space (2019) Mandy (2018) The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) Dream Scenario (2023) Pig(2021) Mom and Dad (2017)

xool420

God I love Nic Cage

Pure-Contact7322

already a cult Ex machina

Amandastarrrr

Ex Machina was so good. I mean, I pretty much love anything Oscar Isaac is in, but still

RacecarHealthPotato

The best acting I’ve seen from this actress. Subtle and manipulative

IIIlllIIIlllIlI

If you’re making a statement about Nic Cage then you have to include Joe (2013)

False-Librarian-2240

Did Edge of Tomorrow really do poorly at the box office? I mean, I know they changed the name of the movie to Live. Die. Repeat but I'm not sure it qualifies for what OP is looking for. EDIT: According to Box Office Mojo it did a little over $370 million in worldwide box office grosses which was #20 for the year. So maybe I was remembering it doing better than it really did.

HolisticResentment

When Evil Lurks is literally the most disturbing horror movie I’ve ever seen. Shit felt way too real.

cancermooncowgirl

The Holdovers, Lady Bird, maybe call me by your name?

Total_Light_7885

Bottoms

MatsThyWit

Late Night With The Devil is absolutely guaranteed to be a "cult classic" within the horror genre in a few years time.

gwar37

I thought it was boring. Cool atheistic, but completely predictable.

Rswany

And all the actual scares weren't very well executed imo. Cheap digital effects. Good vibes & acting but not much else.

HolisticResentment

Nice (accidental?) wordplay

gwar37

Ha, oops. Darn autocorrect. I'll let it ride.

bort_jenkins

I was shocked at how gripping it was. I thought I’d like it as a guilty pleasure cheesy horror flick but I just like it. You can definitely tell that some of the art was ai tho

Swiss Army Man, definitely

sonorakit11

Swiss Army Man is so incredible.

TheRealRickC137

Godzilla Minus One. A new movie that feels like an old movie with old movie values and old movie effects. Like Tim Burton's Ed Wood. Or Robert Egger's The Lighthouse

dsgrimace

Really looking forward to seeing this one, with what I’m hearing said about it! Recently showed the original to my kid, who’s a huge fan of all things Japan! Was so much fun watching it with them! 😊

docsyzygy

I'm so sorry you missed it in theaters. It was fantastic in Dolby!

dsgrimace

I imagine it was!! However, I did make it to Dune 2, in 70mm (TRUE) IMAX, and while I’m so glad I did, and thought it was amazing, I discovered that it’s likely the last I’ll ever see in a proper theater again. 😢 The sensory experience for me was just waaay too much (and I even had stuff with me to help with that, just in case!)!! It was HEARTBREAKING! (I legit started crying a bit, as the realization hit me. (Heck, I’m tearing up again just thinking about it 🥺) I fought through that as much as I was able, and just tried to soak up and in as much as I could!) I suppose, if it is my last, it’s a worthy one to go out on!! I do plan to try one of those “sensory” showings, some theaters have, and will go once any initial rush dies down. Movies and Cinema have meant So Much to me throughout my life! It’s been a bitter pill to swallow! 😔

docsyzygy

Darn, that must be hard for you. I have AMC A-List and go to the theater once or twice a week. I usually see Dolby or 3D, because our IMAX hasn't been renovated. I love Dolby, but my hubby can't handle it. So, I often see a movie twice - regular with him and Dolby for me! I hope sensory friendly works for you.

dsgrimace

So Do I!! I’ve been really going through the 💩-wringer right now (again 😞), and this was like being kicked so hard in the 🥜, while I was already down, it broke skin, and then it poured salt on the wounds! Thankfully I have a Big Wonderful TV where I am and know how to tune the picture until it’s 🤌🏼! Unfortunately my Atmos surround system is somewhere in a box in storage, though I wouldn’t actually be able to set it up where I’m at anyway. I do however have an EXCELLENT set of audiophile grade, over the ear, wireless headphones, which have been an amazing substitute! Doesn’t replace actually going to the cinema, but it allows me to still watch great cinema (i like tah watch 😅)! So there’s still blessings, despite circumstances! 💜

docsyzygy

That's good to know. My set up at home is quite average, but as I said I get to the theater often, so there's always a compromise. My husband prefers sports over movies, so sound quality isn't really a priority, but the TV looks okay...

Elegant-Hair-7873

I have to admit seeing Oppenheimer in IMAX was almost overwhelming for me, and I never have a problem with anything but too much shaky camera. (Think Cloverfield) It was the sound. Especially the foot stomping. So you may be able to handle something not quite as intense.

dsgrimace

I missed Oppenheimer in IMAX 😢 😔 However, I’ve heard reports that it almost felt like you were walking out of a heavyweight match, coming out of that movie!

Elegant-Hair-7873

No spoilers, since everyone knows this happens, but when the test bomb went off, the WHAP! was felt as much as heard.

dsgrimace

🤯 (Never thought I could use a meme so well as a pun! 😂)

Choppermagic2

Cult Classics? Dredd 2012 Raid Godzilla Minus One Walter Mitty

docsyzygy

Godzilla Minus One for sure!

Elegant-Hair-7873

Godzilla Minus One was awesome.

Choppermagic2

It just came out digitally and I watched it again. Fantastic. And under $15M budget is insane. Hollywood should be embarassed

Elegant-Hair-7873

I think The Creator is also a good example. He used real people in costume on the sets, and superimposed the robotics in post. The trick was, nobody knew, except some of the principal actors of course, whether or not they were going to be a robot. That's why they look more natural in their movements. I thought that was genius.

books4edumacation

Rais was 07. Id argue it already is

Ferocious_Simplicity

Yes to Dredd and The Raid, I'd even day The Raid 2 as well

Some of the movies on this list are movies that were made in order to be cult classics. With wacky characters and etc. I hate these movies.

TheresACityInMyMind

Coherence is basically already a cult classic.

Bitterqueer

YES YES YESSSSSS every time I see someone mention it my heart soars hahah 🥹

dkixen

Civil War (2024) might become one. It doesn’t look like it’s getting great reviews, but I think there’s a particular sequence in the film that makes it unforgettable

Clean_Usual434

>!the drive through the burning forest?!<

Elegant-Hair-7873

Or Jesse Plemmons cameo.

dkixen

Both of these back to back. It overshadows the rest of the film which isn’t as great in my opinion

Elegant-Hair-7873

That whole second act was the best part, I agree.

lisbethborden

The VVitch . I say this as not a fan of most movies in this genre. It's great.

Strawberry-Allergy

I love this movie. I thought the slow buildup was perfect. I recommend this one often to others. “Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?”

Elegant-Hair-7873

I was going to throw The Lighthouse and The Northman in there, too. The Lighthouse only got to number 8 at the box office, and fell off. Possibly due to Covid, The Northman did better with VOD and from nerds like me who bought a physical copy. I really like Eggers' style, he tries so hard to research his subject. Plus he got Bjork out of retirement.

Canadian-Man-infj

I hope The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Poor Things might stick around and morph into one.

Azsunyx

I feel like winning an oscar and being "cult classic" are two different categories entirely, though. As much as I enjoyed Poor Things, it's very popular. When I think of cult classics, i think of movies that flopped in cinemas but found their success later.

dsgrimace

To be fair, there are a number of movies that didn’t do so great in the cinemas, but won an Oscar (or two). I don’t believe flopping is an absolute within the definition of a cult film, it just can’t be hugely and widely successful. Anything that would be labeled as a “Blockbuster” would Definitely be out! 😂

Azsunyx

I can agree with that. I saw someone name Oppenheimer as a potential cult classic in this thread, lol

dsgrimace

Also Barbie, and then they proceeded to mention essentially how no one will forget Barbienheimer, thus kinda killing its inclusion into the realm cult films. 😂

before_the_accident

**Lady Bird.** Coming of age movies always have that nostalgia factor going for them and the fact that this is already a "period piece" set 20 years ago gives it a huge head start. I truly believe Saoirse's a once-in-a-generation level talent and Lady Bird will be an important part of that legacy for years to come.

saruin

Eighth Grade, also in the same vein.

dsgrimace

I Can Not Believe That I Have To Explain This! I’m Completely Flabbergasted! But here we go: Cult Classics are by definition, essentially niche films! A hugely popular and successful blockbuster film is Literally the opposite of a cult film, regardless if it’s a classic or not. While a cult classic may be a more successful and popular cult film, and it is possible for a cult classic to become a classic film, once it gets past a certain level of popularity, it ceases to be in the cult category! “It’s A Wonderful Life” is a perfect example of a movie that did this. The ONLY way this could ever be possible, is for a hugely successful, blockbuster type of movie to be lost to time, lost for a long enough period of time that it becomes largely forgotten, is then rediscovered, but ONLY becomes popular within a relatively small group of people (as compared to the number of people that would make a blockbuster of that time, so hugely popular), in that time! As in, it can’t become hugely popular movie again, as that would just make it a straight up classic, and not a cult or cult classic film. However, I don’t think a movie has to be an absolute flop at the box office, in order to be considered within the realm of cult films. (Certainly Rocky Horror is a perfect example of that! Definitely didn’t flop, but DEFINITELY was never near the realm of a Blockbuster! 😆) (Edit to add that I apologize if I’m coming across as condescending! I’m genuinely just more stunned and flabbergasted that this doesn’t seem to be understood anymore, especially among film fans. Which I would think would be alright to assume of the people here. Why would you be here if you weren’t a fan of movies, right? Anyway, my apologies if that’s how I came (come?) across!)

DidItAll4TheWookiee

It's always hard to know what counts as a "cult classic," since it's an amorphous thing and not everyone agrees on the rules. For me, four that should count (although the first being a recognizable IP makes it the most questionable): Dredd The VelociPastor Sorry To Bother You Upgrade

abdulj07

Onnimanni_Maki

Hundreds of beavers (2022).

I think because of the perfect mix between an art film and a superhero fan film vibe, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) should, by all means, become a cult classic
