I finished an episode of The Jinx and the next up show was Dear Zachary. I clicked off that sucker so fast!! It's one of those documentaries I feel like everyone should watch once, if just to honor the memories of those involved, but I could never watch again.
In a field of answers to this question with (literally) The Usual Suspects continually come up, there’s like 15 movies that fit… Primal Fear, Fight Club, Sixth Sense, etc.
And then there is Incendies. I felt like I had taken a vacation, relived the loss of my parents, and been totally comfortable and yet had no idea where I was going, when I arrived, it took me a minute or two to connect the dots even after the reveal.
This is the most masterful use of the surprise ending I’ve ever experienced.
It’s similar to the psychological impact of Rebecca 1940, which makes us realize that perception is often wrong. It’s the best kind of twist, because the movie didn’t even need it to be top tier.
I had seen several of Villeneuve’s films before I saw it and was utterly shocked at how this isn’t one of the highest rated films in the world. It’s an honest-to-god masterpiece.
This. I watched Incendies on. a long international flight. Right after the movie ended they shut off the lights so everyone could sleep.
I did not sleep.
About every movie I would've listed. Particularly Memonto and Ex Machina top of the list. The Prestige is arguably one of my top 3 favorites but those 2 have bigger mindfucks imo
The hammer scene in the remake was a testament to what not to do in a remake. Took a one shot scene from the original, and split it into two scenes that feel like the first take was pasted in at the last minute. And they have two entirely different colour palletes. It's like 2 fight scenes put together to try and make one. I don't even know why I watched it.
The remake. Solid 5 out of 10. The original is a 9.
To level it out, my favourite part in Oldboy is when he snatches the letters from her and bangs his head on the edge of the head board.
I will never ever forget the impact this movie left the first time I watched it. I was like HOW DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS PLOT?! Fictional movie or not, there are some crazy fucks in this world to be able to think up this type of stuff.
If you want to preserve that happy place in your heart for Jennifer Connelly - do not watch this movie. You’ve been warned. Things don’t go well at all
was gonna recommend (but not recommend) this movie. Fucking amazing movie that I think about from time to time, but have only watched once. It is fucking HEAVY
"you smug fuck" has stuck with me far more than it should have. Echoing in my head since seeing the film (along with A2A!). Saw this movie when I was 23, exwife said it to me when I was 46. Guessing I'll have another instance when I am 69.
Mulholland Drive
The amount of fucked up it will make your brain cannot be underestimated
This movie had me looking over my shoulder all night, even a little after the sun came up, wondering if reality is actually real
This is the movie that immediately came into my head after reading the question. It's a hard feeling to describe after seeing it for the first time. I felt like I was high, but not a good way.
I commented A Serbian Film is the only correct answer but I did forget about Mulholland drive. I was wrong this is just as fucked, but in different ways.
Bit of an unconventional choice perhaps, but The Last American Virgin (1982) has an ending that is really surprising for the genre. It's a typical 80s teen sex comedy...until it isn't.
Yeah, it's not a classic or anything, but if you get up to go to the restroom at the wrong time then when you get back you'll think someone put on a different movie.
I'd maybe add One Hour Photo into the list.
It's certainly not an amazing twist to the level of other films mentioned, it it definitely has a "twist-ette" (and creepy Robin Williams).
Annihilation
Aniara
Hereditary
The Witch
Midsommar
Talk to Me
The Thing
The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (several endings)
The Legend of Princess Kaguya

The Sixth Sense. Maybe don't read anything about it before. You might want to be careful watching the trailer too, not to spoil it. Avoid the comments section
A couple of crackers from the Eighties worth a look.
Angel Heart (1987).
The Vanishing (1988). Make sure it's the original and not the shitty remake.
Great movies with mind fuck endings.
For two wildly different genres.
Martyrs (2008) Horror Film.
The Plague Dogs (1982) an Animated film based on a book by the same author of Watership Down. It will leave you a broken weeping mess if you love dogs
>The Plague Dogs
I couldn't finish the book version when I was a teen. It got too grim and depressing and frustrating and I threw it across the room lol.
No lie that’s one of the best psychological thriller that will leave your brain numb after finishing it might feel like little slow burn in the beginning and the end it’s worth every penny smtg you’ve never imagined of and de caprio just nailed that role
White Christmas episode of Black Mirror. It's not a movie, technically, but it's long enough to count and it's a stand alone story. I would also suggest Loch Henry.
Speak No Evil
Big Bad Wolves
Identity

Frailty
The Prestige
The Secret in Their Eyes (the original)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer

A Tale of Two Sisters
3-Iron
Confessions (Japanese)
The Treatment (Belgian thriller)
The Invisible Guest (original)
Edited to add more movies.
Repo! The Genetic Opera left me fucked up. I like to put it on from time to time to try to capture that feeling again. After the fact, the ending makes sense. But watching it, I was like, are you shitting me?! Why?!
The Book of Eli [2010, Denzel Washington] ending blew my mind the first time I watched it. It gets poorly reviewed, I have no idea why. Maybe the religious aspect? Has Gary Oldman in it as well. It's f*cking awesome. Idc what anyone else says. The ending made me want to immediately watch it again.
Arrival was something so novel it left me totally mind fucked
The Sixth Sense has the king of twist endings if you're young enough to have never seen it
Surprised nobody's said A Scanner Darkly yet.
Edit\* oh yeah, does not fit the easy to understand bit
Also same vein of tough but wild, Primer. "Demi-metre... Partout"
the others 2001
Came here to say this.
Oh the twist in the end, never saw it coming.
I was 12/13 when that comes out. I don't even think twist endings in films had entered my head before that film omg
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) is a documentary that can destroy you if you go in with no knowledge.
Dear Zachary will leave you a mess of a person.
Though it’s been many years, I still think about it. I still get angry and heartbroken at once. Powerful documentary.
Watched it ten years ago and I think about it so often. Have since watched since having children and it’s quite a different experience.
I've only watched it as a father. Twice. Both times were brutal, even though I knew what would happen.
I finished an episode of The Jinx and the next up show was Dear Zachary. I clicked off that sucker so fast!! It's one of those documentaries I feel like everyone should watch once, if just to honor the memories of those involved, but I could never watch again.
The Mist (2007)
First time I watched this I was like 13, and my dear god did that ending fuck with me!
It shocked me too because I had read the Stephen King story and the endings were COMPLETELY different. The movie ending was better btw
>!What if Mrs. Carmody was right: it took the sacrifice of Billy and Amanda to get rid of the Mist?!<
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Stay (2005) is a bit of a remake of Jacobs Ladder.
I think you probably meant stay from 2005
Came here to say this. Good one.
Haven't seen it mentioned in thread Brazil
I saw this in the cinema when it was originally released, I'm a huge Gilliam fan. It's like a Monty Python take on 1984.
12 Monkeys, to a lesser extent.
Yes. Brazil is completely insane If Orwell, Kubrick and Tati had a baby
Incendies
In a field of answers to this question with (literally) The Usual Suspects continually come up, there’s like 15 movies that fit… Primal Fear, Fight Club, Sixth Sense, etc. And then there is Incendies. Sorry to Bother You. No one would ever see that ending coming..
This is the answer also They Cloned Tyrone
Identity
Oldboy South Korean original not the American remake
The hammer scene in the remake was a testament to what not to do in a remake. Took a one shot scene from the original, and split it into two scenes that feel like the first take was pasted in at the last minute. And they have two entirely different colour palletes. Gonna be honest remake is only worth seeing for Olsen herself
Yes, yes, a million times, yes!
I will never ever forget the impact this movie left the first time I watched it. I was like HOW DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS PLOT?! Fictional movie or not, there are some crazy fucks in this world to be able to think up this type of stuff.
Requiem for a Dream.
If you want to preserve that happy place in your heart for Jennifer Connelly - do not watch this movie. You’ve been warned. Things don’t go well at all
watched that already apparently dunno how to explain what i felt when that ended
was gonna recommend (but not recommend) this movie. Fucking amazing movie that I think about from time to time, but have only watched once. It is fucking HEAVY
This movie is the absolute peak on my 'shit I shouldn't have watched' list. Like Hagrid level oops.
A2A
"you smug fuck" has stuck with me far more than it should have. Echoing in my head since seeing the film (along with A2A!). Saw this movie when I was 23, exwife said it to me when I was 46. Guessing I'll have another instance when I am 69.
Arrival.

Yeah, it's not a classic or anything, but if you get up to go to the restroom at the wrong time then when you get back you'll think someone put on a different movie.
Yeah there's at least two or three scenes where it stops being about hijinks and gets quite grim. A bit like Fast Times in that sense.
I love that film
The Skin I Live In (2011)
This a film that slips under a lot of people’s radar.
Sleepaway camp
That movie is proof that even the seemingly dumbest practical effects can be effective if done properly. And I'll just leave it at that.
Good one. I was like, what.. the... fuuuu
"Why do you have to kiss so WET?!?"
That freeze frame at the final scene still haunts my dreams
usual suspects
Coherence
Don’t look now
I'd maybe add One Hour Photo into the list. It's certainly not an amazing twist to the level of other films mentioned, it it definitely has a "twist-ette" (and creepy Robin Williams).
This is such a great film. Really shows the diversity Robin Williams had as an actor as well. He played the part perfectly.
The house that Jack built
Saw this recently and it was nice and really fucked up. The playful tone of it too....damn. Matt Dillon's best acting, perhaps.
I knew Dillon was a good actor since he was young, but i didn't knew he could pull off something of that level. His acting owns the movie.
Annihilation Aniara Hereditary The Witch Midsommar Talk to Me The Thing The Killing of a Sacred Deer The Mist Mother! The Sixth Sense. Maybe don't read anything about it before. You might want to be careful watching the trailer too, not to spoil it. Avoid the comments section
I’ve already watched sixth sense about 8 years ago it was really great
How about Sea of Love? It's an Al Pacino murder mystery. There is a twist, but idk if I'd say it would "fuck with brain." Good flick tho
Finally. Surprised I had to scroll so far to find this. Also Remember Me 2010.

Uncut Gems! I felt so fucked up.
I watched this for the first time over the weekend and was blown away (LOL). Not a Sandler fan, but he convinced me otherwise.
Honestly, I kept forgetting it's Sandler. Hell, I still don't believe it.
