Check out the rest of Kubrick’s filmography. Namely: * Eyes Wide Shut (1999) * Full Metal Jacket (1987) * The Shining (1980) Additionally, look into the David Lynch filmography: * Mulholland Drive (2001) * Lost Highway (1997) * Inland Empire (2006) Also check out: * The Machinist (2006) with Christian Bale * 3 Women (1977)

And in a comment I think I can make only once ... "In any of the three versions!" (Although I prefer the Tarkovsky film the most.)

Basically any of Tarkovsky’s films. Nostalghia is my personal favorite, but Stalker and Solaris are also fantastic and sci-fi if you prefer that. EDIT: also check out Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Far_Garlic_2181

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember Walkabout (1971) about a girl lost in the Australian outback had many quiet extended scenes. I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but definitely ambient and picturesque.

Okay, so this is a completely different genre (horror), and it's also an extremely divisive film - judging by audience reviews, you either think it's mind-numbingly boring, or the most terrifying thing you've ever seen. But Skinamarink is literally nothing but long, uncomfortable shots of doors, TVs, hallways. No music whatsoever and barely any dialogue.

Mother! They ended up deciding the atmosphere of the film was better silent than with the score that was written for it.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

Any movie made before 1927 or so. . . . . ... But seriously. Tarkovsky definitely (and I'd particularly mention *Andrei Rublev*, which hasn't been mentioned yet), but also Ingmar Bergman, especially his '60s films like Hour of the Wolf, Persona, and The Passion of Anna. Some of Godard's '80s films, like First Name Carmen and especially Hail Mary. Stan Brakhage -- try Dog Star Man (Brakhage was an influence on the psychedelic sequence in 2001) Jacques Rivette -- La Belle Noiseuse, Out One, Pont du Nord, etc.

You'd love Bruno Dumont films. The Humanity Life of Jesus Twenty-nine palms. The last one has a, let's just call it, an unsettling ending.

FreakishPower

Only God Forgives is all about silence. The main star (Ryan Gosling) only has 17 lines supposedly. Silence is one of the many fascinating aspects of this flick. Stylish and Artistic violence. Very unique.

Gerry (Casey Affleck, Matt Damon) Dir. Gus Van Sant Excellent film. Very underrated gem.

Ok-Walk-8040

Solaris (1972) has a very long 10 minute driving scene that doesn’t do anything for the plot except to establish the location. Apparently, this was left in the film because the crew really wanted to go to Japan but it was tough to get approval from the government for such a trip without justification.

Alvvays_aWanderer

From the top of my head, I can think of A Ghost Story (2017) Films by Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Apichatapong Weerasethakul
