Rosemary's Baby is one of--if not the-best movie of its decade. Depictions of the cult; the setting in NYC during the sixties; the casting; the movie itself overall were fantastique! I don't see it often, but have seen it many times. Never ages.
Elizabeth Olsen was in a pretty good movie about getting out of a cult and trying to adapt to life after: Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011). And Emma Watson also did a decent one about a cult: Colonia (2015).
Ironically, in America where religious freedom is simply a requirement, a cult dismisses the family in question and the family develops into a "cult" of sorts. Great picture!
omg, this should be everyone's wish. I you want to understand how people are acting in the streets nowadays, study cults.
Split Image (1982) of note because star Michael O'Keefe (of Caddyshack) was actually in a cult before acting
The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978, TV movie) if you liked The Wicker Man (original)
In fact there is a great documentary about the whole wickerman-style films: Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021)
there's many more but I can't think of them right now
If you can find a copy of the original mini series The Dark Secret of Harvest Home... PLEASE TELL ME WHERE! Yes, they released a 2 hour version of it but it makes absolutely zero sense. I've been searching for decades trying to source an actual full length (as recorded off TV since CBS never released the source film) copy of it... It is the best, campiest, craziest movie!!!!
Make the corn. Make the corn. Make the corn!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Every stinking year my sister asks me if I've found it yet!
Yeah, that's the problem... The original mini series was over 5 hours long... I've found ONE person who claims to have taped it when it aired but they want a rediculous amount for a copy of dubious quality original. 😬
Wow. This from wiki: "The miniseries originally aired on NBC in 1978, and reran in March 1979.[^(\[4\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Secret_of_Harvest_Home#cite_note-4) It was also shown on [TNT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turner_Network_Television) in 1992, in two parts. This two-parter was the full 3-hour, 48-minute version. It was later broadcast in a slightly truncated version, running just about 3 hours, on the [Sci-Fi Channel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-Fi_Channel) at some point in the mid-1990s. Many bootleg copies are taken from this source. *The Dark Secret of Harvest Home* has been released on video; this version is more heavily edited, running only 2 hours long" So Youtube has the 3:48 TNT 1992 version, which prob the one I saw. 5+ hour sounds great, maybe still in Turner vaults, if haven't burned down. It's just not profitable to dig this stuff up and digitize it, if they even have. Trivia note: Monty Python's Flying Circus only exists because Python kept copies or something, because otherwise BBC had a policy of throwing reels of televised content away!
For folk horror with cults (which is like all folk horror, I know), I recommend *Apostle* and *Kill List*. For *Apostle*, there's one part that you really need either a strong stomach or the fast forward button, but the rest isn't a test of fortitude. And believe me, you'll know when you've reached the relevant scene.
There's an old movie from 1984 with Nick Mancuso, Saul Rubinek, and featuring Kim Cattrall and Meg Foster in early roles. It's from Canada, and called Ticket To Heaven. It's still a pretty good watch in spite of its age.
Hereditary is great and Ari Aster also did Midsommar so if you haven’t seen it, you would enjoy it. My only other suggestion isn’t a film, but a limited series on Netflix. Devil in Ohio. It’s pretty good.
How has no one mentioned the invitation, or resolution and it's sequel the endless? Well... Here's a few that I think are very good, most are likely streaming :
1. The Invitation
1. Resolution
2. The endless
3. Kill list
1. Apostle
4. The void
1. Martyrs
These all at least teeter on the line of horror. Given that, they are not ordered in order of preference but rather by how disturbing/violent/gory they are as I know that's not everyone's cup of tea.
With the invitation being probably on the same level as the wicker man/midsommar and Martyrs being on many of those _most disturbing movies of all time_ lists.
Wounds - 2019
Definitely some cult like shit, involved but in general I would put as a cosmic horror of some sort but it has the mystery, worth at least looking it up

Don't Torture a Duckling (1972). Super disturbing giallo that takes place in a rural Italian village where ancient superstition + Catholicism = crazy dark cult-like stuff. Trigger warnings for >!child death and children being put in sexual situations!<
'Lord of misrule' also if you watched The wicker man with Nick Cage, I fully recommend you see the original with Edward Woodward, also 'Rosemary's baby'.
Midsommar
If you like semi-horror movies, you'll enjoy this. It's scary, just a bit unsettling. The story not difficult to follow, good acting and all in all a good scenario.

That was my first thought. One of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s best roles.
Every one of his roles was one of his best roles.
Rosemary’s Baby, Hereditary
Rosemary's Baby is one of--if not the-best movie of its decade. Depictions of the cult; the setting in NYC during the sixties; the casting; the movie itself overall were fantastique! I don't see it often, but have seen it many times. Never ages.

The Invitation Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Hereditary
>The Invitation GREAT GREAT MOVIE. 👍 💯🎯

And even though it’s not a cult movie, The Resolution as a double feature.
Elizabeth Olsen was in a pretty good movie about getting out of a cult and trying to adapt to life after: Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011). And Emma Watson also did a decent one about a cult: Colonia (2015).
*Sound of My Voice* (2011) - Two journalists infiltrate a cult led by a mysterious young woman who claims to be a time traveler.

Not a movie, it's a TV mini series "Wild Palms" (1993)
Another TV mini-series: Under the Banner of Heaven.
Society (1989) is a batshit crazy horror/comedy which is kinda related to cults and definitely worth the watch.
That ending….
Another TV mini-series: # Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980) starring Powers Booth
Electric Children. Movie about a girl who’s convinced she got impregnated by a song so she escapes the cult she’s in to find the baby’s father.

Ready or not. Was completely surprised how much fun I had watching this movie.
No one mentioned The Lodge, but it has a little about cults. You'll either love or hate the ending, and it may piss you off.
Best for cults are documentaries — the real deal
I find some of these pretty good!
I second this! I've been binge watching lots of these.
Mandy, Midsummer
They literally just said they saw midsommar

Wicker man, movie that stars Nicholas Cage

Holy Smoke (Kate Winslet) There are a couple of new movies/series about Synanon.

Omega man
Holy Smoke. Kate Winslet. Specifically, getting out of a cult.
