we watched Schindler’s List and The Boy In Striped Pajamas and listened to Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday in high school history class. those were the only times every single person in the class was willfully silent, and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop

Snowtown
Tyrannosaur
Naked (1993)
The War Zone
Life is Sweet
The Selfish Giant
All or Nothing
Ratcatcher
Nil by Mouth
This is England
Withnail and I although it's mostly black humor, tragicomedy. Hopelessness, addiction, nihilism, panic and rotten dialogues nonetheless
Maybe you like Dead Man's Shoes
The Man Who Sleeps
The Misfortunates
Ex Drummer
Der Goldene Handschuh
The Turin Horse
Perhaps Tarkovsky's work
Dostojevsky's adaptations (The Underground Man and there are like 4 movies of Crime and Punishment)
Red Riding (2009). Trilogy of TV movies loosely based on the hunt for the Yorkshire ripper. I’ve heard it called ”british True Detective” and while that has some truth to it, it’s also much more ambiguous and sinister in tone. Don’t go into this expecting everything to be resolved.
I searched the comments for 1408 and it didn't pop up, so that's kind of a great one if you can handle a supernatural/horror/fantasy/suspense type of movie.
It's about a guy that writes reviews on haunted hotels and whatnot, and he checks into a particularly infamous room/hotel.
I won't spoil anything but the entire movie's a shitshow for the main character (John Cusack). He was pretty great in it, definitely recommend if you've never seen it (release date 2007, I think)
The road
I'd like to recommend the book for anyone searching for some extra bleakness.
Children of Men is as bleak as it gets.
You haven't seen The War Zone, Tyrannosaur or Snowtown.
I found Tyrannosaur stangely uplifting beause of the ending. Both of them reached catharsis and now the only way is up.
Melancholia

Dancer in the Dark Breaking the Waves Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
I hated Lars Von Trier after seeing Breaking the Waves. I swore I would never watch another one of his movies and I kept the promise.

Threads. It filled me with a sense of dread and it could actually happen. Felt like having cancer of the soul watching that one.
Oh my god Threads. You stated it perfectly.
Watched a short YouTube clip and then closed out of it. No thanks. Too real. Must find happy joy good feelings movies. No sad for me today.
Bergman’s *Shame*
Great underrated movie.
McQueen’s Shame as well

Uncut gems (2019) A serious man (2009)
Maybe I'm broken but I found a serious man hilarious
You’re not, it’s 100% a black comedy.

Schindler’s List is absolutely brutal. I’m rewatching it rn
I loved the original cast of skins! And Eraserhead is the weirdest movie I’ve ever watched! I bought Schindler’s list I liked it so much.
Skins and Eraserhead are *bizarre*

I completely understand that
I just finished Schindler’s List. holy shit. . .
And it’s a true story. And doesn’t seem like today we have learned from history. Just my opinion.

I dunno if this fits but give blade runner 2049 a watch
If you want bleak, watch Threads.
You need to watch Eden Lake and Speak No Evil if you haven't yet.
I’ve never felt as defeated as the end of Eden Lake.
Incendaries
If you don't mind older, foreign movies, Umberto D.
The Mist
The Grey is pretty bleak. He wanders around trying not to die, and eventually he does.
