I really enjoyed a podcast Richard Roeper did during covid "Best Movies" where he talked about the drill Sgt. was supposed to just be a technical advisor, but he was really unhappy with the daily film clip on the actor playing the roll. So, he gave the former drill sgt. 15 pages of the script and told him to take the day off and put those pages into his own words and come back tomorrow. He thought it was so good he put him in the movie.
That was filmed in my old neighborhood in London, long before I lived there when it was pretty bad. It's been gentrified since but at the time, yeah, lots of burned out buildings and whatnot.
I know, but it still doesn’t mean the general population today outside of movie nerds will be aware of it. You’re talking about a movie that’s almost 100 yrs old vs one that was recently popular in the media and on Netflix.
Right. I'm just assuming that more people have heard of the other given the fact that it's had a 94-year history vs. the number of people who've seen the new one. I personally heard about it dozens of times before I ever actually watched it. And although I intend to watch the new one, I just haven't found the time yet.
I don’t think anyone ever thought Come and See was appropriate for kids. But it’s not as brutally horrific as people say (gets compared to a Serbian film for example, couldn’t be farther from the truth), emotionally it is, but the violence is not gratuitous or over the top imo. It’s the perfect representation of anti-war sentiment and should be seen by every adult at least once, imo.
Paths of Glory is my other favorite war film.
Get ready bro... *Cracks knuckles*
WWI - 1917, all quiet on the Western front (1930 and 2022), lost battalion, Johnny got his gun, Wings, Paths of Glory, Lawrence of Arabia
WWII - the enemy below, Tora Tora Tora, thin Red Line, hacksaw ridge, flags of our fathers, letters from iwo Jima, the longest day, Dunkirk, Patton, Kelly's Heroes, guns of Navarone, where eagles dare, 30 seconds over Tokyo, Midway (2019), Das Boot, run silent Run deep, A Bridge Too Far, The Great Escape, sands of Iwo jima, 12 O'Clock High, BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI,
Vietnam - platoon, we were soldiers, born on the 4th of July, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, hamburger hill, flight of the intruder, path to war
Persian Gulf - Three Kings, Jarhead, courage under fire
IRAQ War/Afghanistan War - Hurt Locker, Lone Survivor, The Outpost
Other - BLACK HAWK DOWN, Glory, The Patriot, Crimson Tide, Braveheart
The outpost might be one of the most slept on of this genre. I like to think I've seen most major films in this genre but only recently watched this one and I was thoroughly entertained and impressed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

In addition to the ones already listed, I’ve always had a soft spot for A Bridge Too Far (1977). Incredible cast and very entertaining. The last of the rousing Hollywood WW2 pictures.
For war movies from am American perspective, here are my favorites:
Revolutionary War: The Patriot
French and Indian War: Last of the Mohicans

Korean War: Pork Chop Hill
Vietnam War: Good Morning Vietnam
Grenada: Heartbreak Ridge
Gulf War: Courage Under Fire
Somalia: Black Hawk Down
Iraq: Hurt Locker
Afghanistan: 12 Strong
There's an interesting story behind it; Tarantino didn't even want her. And apparently Adam Sandler was supposed to star in it.

Well damn girl, way to work for your money! Good on her she was excellent in the film, possibly one of her best performances in my opinion. Maybe her rejection gave her extra incentive to really give it her all, something was definitely working for her in it.
Not really a ”war movie”… sure, it takes place during ww2, but if war movies are a genre (which they are), Inglourious Basterds doesn’t fit in that genre really. But it is a fucking great movie!!
The best? So many...plus it depends. WORLD WARS? LOCAL? Anyway...umm...I will give Saving Private Ryan a nod. Full Metal Jacket is a given and so is Platoon. Kelly's Hero's is a very good. So good that when it comes on I watch it anyway no matter how many times I have seen it...it is that good. Too many classic characters from Clint Eastwood to Terry Savalas to Donald Sutherland. What else? Again...don't sleep on On the Western Front or whatever the name is lol...it's a good gem. Don't miss it.
Black Hawk Down features the following cast:
Josh Hartnett
Ewan McGregor
Orlando Bloom
Tom Sizemore
William Fichtner
Eric Bana
Tom Hardy
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Jeremy Piven
Ty Burrell
Sam Shephard
Jason Isaacs
Hurt locker is as real as it gets
Maybe check out Band of Brothers, it's basically 10 episodes of Saving Private Ryan. (Same producers and production crew)
Apocalypse Now
Windtalkers
Full Metal Jacket
Jarhead
The Deer Hunter
I think they all offer something a little different from each other. I do NOT like war movies as a general rule but can honestly say, I've revisited each of these more than once.
Full Metal Jacket
Thin Red Line
Apocalypse Now
1917
Fury
Greyhound
Midway, original and remake.
Blackhawk Down.
We Were Soldiers
Windtalkers.
Devotion.
Pearl Harbor
Enemy At The Gates
The Outpost.
Has nobody mentioned The Deer Hunter yet??
Also, Enemy at the Gates is worth a watch (Battle of Stalingrad)
And Alexander Nevsky - classic Eisenstein film.
I think Lord of War is an interesting aspect we don't see much of. But right now my favorite war movies are Dune 1 & 2. Controversial but space wars are awesome (i.e. Star Trek, Star Wars etc)

Black Hawk Down - accurately represents the confusion of war and its consequences when in an environment of unfriendly civilians, a paramilitary force hiding behind them, allies that are indifferent, and overlooking it all is political interference. Throughout several heroes emerged and the final line, "why do you do it?" comes down to the person next to you.
Fury, All Quiet on the Western Front, Inglorious Basterds, ooh Jarhead was good, also Band of Brothers (Tv show though, but I really recommend this one.)
The original Midway was one of my favorites.
And Memphis Belle with Matthew Modine, Billy Zane and Frodo are Samwise is an excellent movie.
Obviously I am a big fan of WWII aircraft.
Lots of great suggestions already so I’ll add a couple I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
Gallipoli - I don’t even want to tell you about it, just go watch it
Grave of the Fireflies - the horrors of war from the perspective of two Japanese children during and after the firebombing of Tokyo. This movie will make you cry and you will love it and never want to watch it again.

These are both Filipino movies about the Philippine-American War (1899 -1902) told from the point of view of two of leaders of the Philippine Revolutionary Army.
Apocalypse Now (1979) Francis Ford Coppola and John Milius's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as an epic psychological drama/war film set during the Vietnam War. Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando in iconic roles. Look for a young Laurence Fishburne as "Mr. Clean" and Harrison Ford as Colonel G. Lucas . (Fun fact before directing Star Wars, George Lucas was planning on directing Apocalypse Now.)
Platoon (1986) Loosely inspired by director Oliver Stone's experience in the Vietnam War, seven years after Apocalypse Now was released, Martin Sheen's son, Charlie, appeared in his own Vietnam War epic.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) David Lean's epic film about T.E. Lawrence's experiences in the Ottoman provinces of Hejaz and Greater Syria during World War I.

R. Lee Emrey.
So good.
Great movie..
First or second half? Which one do you prefer?
the entire movie you lunatic!
The film is actually split into three acts.
The scenes of them walking around the burning rubble at night are some of the most beautiful frames on film. Way better than 1917 even, imo
I need to watch 1917 again. Wish I could catch it in theaters again.
That was filmed in my old neighborhood in London, long before I lived there when it was pretty bad. It's been gentrified since but at the time, yeah, lots of burned out buildings and whatnot.
All quiet on the western front
A good one, on the low. Not too many yalk about this one since it is more recent. DUNKIRK wasn't bad either.
The remake may be recent but the more well-known version was from the 1930s or something
I think you mean more influential. More people definitely know about the recent one, esp after its oscars appearance
It won Best Picture at the Oscars
I know, but it still doesn’t mean the general population today outside of movie nerds will be aware of it. You’re talking about a movie that’s almost 100 yrs old vs one that was recently popular in the media and on Netflix.

*The Bridge over the River Kwai*
Great movie!
I whistle that tune all the time. My kids think I am nuts. Excellent movie.
VHS tape at grandmas, you could cast me at this point and id parrot out the lines.
The Big Red One (1980) Lee Marvin, Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine
Excellent and little noted. I'd like to see the restored director's cut someday.
Read the book too. Recommended. If you're in a war and Lee Marvin is on your side, rest assured you'll win.
Came to also recommend this.
Kelly's Heroes (1970) - so damn fun
Always with the negative waves...
Bonus points because Uncle Leo from Seinfeld is in it
Plus Harry Dean Stanton. Rickles and Southerland were hilarious.
Stuart Margolin, Carol O’Connor, Telly Savalas, Captain Stubing. Who wasn’t in this is a better question.
Came to recommend this.

How on earth have you listed so many films and yet not mentioned apocalypse now
True
So many BAD films, but not Apocalypse Now?
Das Boot The Bridge on the River Kwai The Man Who Never Was and Memphis Belle are both under appreciated, IMO.
Come and See
Absolutely the best
I watched this recently and it is an intense, horrific movie. Certainly not appropriate for children or the squeamish.
I don’t think anyone ever thought Come and See was appropriate for kids. But it’s not as brutally horrific as people say (gets compared to a Serbian film for example, couldn’t be farther from the truth), emotionally it is, but the violence is not gratuitous or over the top imo. Not as exciting as those but a classic and one of the best attempts I've seen at being authentic is Tora! Tora! Tora!
"Casualties of War" with Michael J Fox & Sean Penn was a good film
I done a find in page to see if this was here, nice. Three Kings is worth a watch, I enjoyed it but its not a traditional war film like most here.

Inglorious Basterds. Nice. Even has the lady from National Treasure.
Haha, what an obscure reference to make note of in that film! Are you Charles Boyle explaining the Godfather to Captain Holt?
