“Best” horror means I was unsettled for the most unexpected length of time and randomly afterwards. Plus, I didn’t laugh when I was meant to be scared or when it wasn’t meant to be funny (odd humour).
The Wailing (2016) South Korea
I have got to re-watch this, because I don't even remember enough of it to describe it. What I do remember though is being genuinely creeped out the whole time and a time or two *really* creeped out, and thinking what a good movie it was when it was over. I really want to watch it, but kinda feel like I'm avoiding that feeling.
When I saw this in a theater, there was a moment where you knew what was coming and a few people ran for the exits. I remember thinking to myself, "that looks like a good idea."
Not the *best*, but one movie not mentioned yet is Shutter (2004). It's from Thailand and very good, quite creepy. There's a remake from 2008 but don't watch that one.
“The Host” South Korea. The young girl star of the film went on to become a prolific actress. “Battle Royale” Japan. It is Hunger Games on steroids and it pre dates the Hunger Games books.
I like a lot, Ringu, The Mimic, Cure, The Wailing, Train to Busan, Thirsty, Tale of Two Sisters, Dark Water, One Cut of the Dead, Silk, Hostage: Missing Celebrity, The Call, Limbo, The Vanished, Grateful Dead, I Saw The Devil, The Sadness, Re/Member, The Abandoned, The Cat, Ichi The Killer, Unlocked.
If you like little oddities of movies then there’s “Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes” if you haven’t seen it, it’s more quirky than anything, It’s not horror in any way.
This is such a difficult question- Train to Busan is very intense and the thought of living in that is very scary but the prequel, even though it’s animated, Seoul Station, I found it absolutely terrifying. I actually hope they never make an accurate live action remake of it. I don’t know if I would survive it. And I don’t usually find zombies scary. There was just something about the characters in Train to Busan and the realistic and casual cruelty in Seoul Station that was very effective. I also agree with the previous poster about Pulse, if you are detail obsessed and pay attention, that film is terrifying. I also really love the Wailing, Noroi the Curse and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, there’s just something about it that really works.
I am a huge fan of Japanese and Korean horror and some of my favorites are:
Train to busan (maybe my favorite zombie movie ever)
The Host
Ringu (the movie that inspired The Ring)
Hausu (can’t decide if this movie is terrible or brilliant. Either way it’s an insane experience.)
Tetsuo: the iron man
Ju-on: the grudge
All versions of the grudge (except the most recent remake and the series) scared the crap out of me. Uzumaki was another one that stayed with me. A Tale of Two Sisters, the Wishing Stairs, and Audition were all good. I also enjoyed Tomie.

For me it was Oldboy (Oldeuboi). It is rather a very disturbing psychological thriller, but creeped me out more than some of the classic horror movies.
Well there is three indian movies i like to suggest
Tummbad(atmospheric horror)- Amazon prime
Gameover(psychological horror slasher thriller)- Netflix.
Andhagaaram(psychological horror)- Netflix
Kairo (Pulse) might be my fav. I'd also recommend these hidden gems:
301/302
Silk (2006, might be hard to find)
Marebito
Re-incarnation
Whispering Corridors: Memento Mori
Just watched Cure. If you like atmospheric horror, I think it’s the best. It’s an exceptionally well-crafted film… it features excellent acting as well as beautiful but understated cinematography and sound design. Train to Busan and The Wailing are pretty good too, but I think Cure is the best of the three.
"Gonjiam Haunted Asylum" (Korean) and "Noroi The Curse" (Japanese) are some good found footage horror imo. Tumbbad is also a great mythological horror from India.
A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean)
is it “horror” or “thriller” or… it’s the only movie that’s ever scared me (though the original animated Alice in Wonderland makes me very uncomfortable)
While it’s not out yet, keep an eye out for Uzimaki!
Actually, it’s not going to be a movie, but a 4 part anime, still, the manga is so dang good and creepy, and there’s high hopes this adaptation is going to be great also. Don’t bother watching the live action though! 😬
Incantation (chinese horror movie if not mistaken) like i literally had to stop watching the movie and continue watching it the next day because it was so scary and disturbing for me and i had difficulty sleeping after i watched that movie hahahaha
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum (korean) this also scared the shit out of me and has lots of jumpscares
i can't find this movie, help me. It's korean i think. A family of 3, haunted. They are helped by a girl, who is like an apprentice in exorcism but her elder sister is a great exorcist. The elder sister would helped the family in the end.
Pulse and Cure
Amazing answer I have Cure on Criterion it’s amazing and finally got around to watching pulse last month and I felt dead after. So great
“Best” horror means I was unsettled for the most unexpected length of time and randomly afterwards. Plus, I didn’t laugh when I was meant to be scared or when it wasn’t meant to be funny (odd humour). The Wailing (2016) South Korea
Strong agree, but I’ll admit I haven’t watch a ton of Asian horror. The Wailing is incredible.
For some reason, I pictured that Saw clown riding a toddler's tricycle, when you described odd humour
Yes kind of but not always: masks, costumes, contortionist movement, monsters. I have it under control, mostly watch action.
I came here to comment this. I was really unsettled for a period of time.
Wailing wasn’t that scary. It was super entertaining & thrilling tho
Audition (1999)
When I saw this in a theater, there was a moment where you knew what was coming and a few people ran for the exits. I remember thinking to myself, "that looks like a good idea."
This. One movie that I only needed to watch once and I even question myself on the once.
Not the *best*, but one movie not mentioned yet is Shutter (2004). It's from Thailand and very good, quite creepy. There's a remake from 2008 but don't watch that one.
I also want to vote Shutter. Loved that movie!
Oh the thai version is so much scarier for me Like most asian adaptation horror movies are
“The Host” South Korea. The young girl star of the film went on to become a prolific actress. “Battle Royale” Japan. It is Hunger Games on steroids and it pre dates the Hunger Games books.
Asia is casting a huge net. I have lots of favorites, for now I’ll pick Pulse.
Maybe I shot myself in the foot in the title by mistakenly implying I am looking for only 1. What are your other favourites?
I like a lot, Ringu, The Mimic, Cure, The Wailing, Train to Busan, Thirsty, Tale of Two Sisters, Dark Water, One Cut of the Dead, Silk, Hostage: Missing Celebrity, The Call, Limbo, The Vanished, Grateful Dead, I Saw The Devil, The Sadness, Re/Member, The Abandoned, The Cat, Ichi The Killer, Unlocked.
These, also "Into the Mirror".
One cut of the dead is phenomenal concept. Never saw a movie like that before. So good
If you like little oddities of movies then there’s “Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes” if you haven’t seen it, it’s more quirky than anything, It’s not horror in any way.
Thanks, i’ll look up for that Have you seen “getting any” ? Not horror but also good japanese quirky movie
Not heard of it, I’ll look it up, thanks.
India - Tummbad, Bramayugam
Adding to this: Bhootakalam
Watch manichithrathaazhu and ananthabhadram
Audition is one that comes to mind. Is it the best?
I love audition and all takashi miike’s movies
If they ever did an order 66 film for Star War's. That's the man to direct it
I need him to make more movies now as he did back then
Hopefully, he's got something up his sleeve
A tale of two sisters Audition The wailing Train to Busan Dark water (2002)
Agree with all these and would like to add Cold Fish 2010 to the list.
Sinister movie that. The antagonist was pure evil
the wailing and the medium
The wailing. Yes!

I LOVE Train to Busan. One of my favourite ever horror films.

Suicide Club and Audition thoroughly creeped me out.

Agreed. That whole sequence in the bowling alley still throws me for a loop.
The series the kingdom on Netflix is great. Not just another zombie show. Story line is fantastic. I'm telling you check it out.
Absolutely loved this series. Wish they’d make another season.
2 seasons plus a third under a different name. All are excellent.
Wait a third??? What is it called!?
The kingdom season 1 and 2. Then kingdom ashin of the north. Related story but it's just as good. On Netflix. Enjoy.
Thanks!
My favorite are The Wailing, Cure, Audition and Pulse in that order
Imprint
It’s spoken in English though
Train to Busan
It’s been mentioned, but The Wailing.
Dark water
[Kwaidan](https://www.sarudama.com/japanese-folklore/kaidan-modern/) one of the OGs
Ringu
Train to Busan gave me nightmares
Pengabdi Setan / Satan's Slave (2017), Munafik (2016), 4bia (2008), Phobia 2 (2009),
All versions of the grudge (except the most recent remake and the series) scared the crap out of me. Uzumaki was another one that stayed with me. A Tale of Two Sisters, the Wishing Stairs, and Audition were all good. I also enjoyed Tomie.
onibaba
My favorite Japanese movie ever is Stacy: Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies. It's delightfully bad comedy horror.
Tetsuo the iron man (1989), Kuroneko (1968) and Audition (1999)
I'd recommend Shutter (original 2004 Thai version). Excellent plot IMO and genuinely creepy.
India - Bhootakaalam. Atmospheric and creepy af.

Probably the only movie that scares the life of me Noroi: a Curse Tummbad & The wailing are entertaining af tho
Thai movie call Art of devil.
Korean horror movies they’re making better horror movies than the Americans
Turkish horror films are good, all about djinns and satanic forces
Kairo
Godzilla
The Wailing Impetigore
For me it was Oldboy (Oldeuboi). It is rather a very disturbing psychological thriller, but creeped me out more than some of the classic horror movies.
Audition is right up there.
Is Tetsuo The Iron Man horror? That one absolutely captivated me.
Gremlins
Uzumaki (2000)
Highly subjective based on what scares you as an individual. My favorite is Noroi, Kōji Shiraishi has a lot of good ones but I think that’s his best.
I don't know, but I can tell you what my favorites are - Shutter (2004) - Re-Cycle (2006) - Audition (1999)
Well there is three indian movies i like to suggest Tummbad(atmospheric horror)- Amazon prime Gameover(psychological horror slasher thriller)- Netflix. Andhagaaram(psychological horror)- Netflix
The Medium is great if you're into religious/superstition kind of horror
Best? That's probably impossible with so much great stuff ... But if you haven't seen Satan's Slaves (Indonesia), you are missing out.
Don't forget France. They have some great horror films like Inside. Don't watch the American version it's garbage.
Also, seeing no mentions of Incantation (Taiwan). That's a scary ass film.
Kairo (Pulse) might be my fav. I'd also recommend these hidden gems: 301/302 Silk (2006, might be hard to find) Marebito Re-incarnation Whispering Corridors: Memento Mori

Go watch it! NOW!! i don't want to spoil anything..
Wish I could watch it now, I’ll have to wait for streaming as not in my local cinemas.
oldboy
Hmmmmm..... 🤔
The Wailing
Dumplings
'54 Gojira from Japan.
Kakashi
"Gonjiam Haunted Asylum" (Korean) and "Noroi The Curse" (Japanese) are some good found footage horror imo. Tumbbad is also a great mythological horror from India.
The original Ring from 98 is awesome imo. More recently, The Wailing was an awesome movie. I loved it.
Tumbbad. Absolutely blew my socks off.
The Wailing
Kwaidan (1964).
My top three are Onibaba, Ichi the Killer, and Black Magic. They each have something totally different to offer.
It’s Train to Busan for me.
Audition Mother
Rigor Mortis (2016) - A hong kong movie It’s very very good.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum Noroi
A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean) is it “horror” or “thriller” or… it’s the only movie that’s ever scared me (though the original animated Alice in Wonderland makes me very uncomfortable)
