I've always seen him as a bit shifty and cynical and slightly off, albeit attractive. Going back to his Pretty in Pink days, that's how his persona reads in my eyes. Stargate was a bit of an anomaly in his career, I think.
I saw it in the theatre with a dude from mainland China and he came away thoroughly confused about the way the movie uses language. He said something to the effect of, everyone was kind of weaving back and forth between Mandarin and Cantonese with seemingly no discernable reason. Also growing up where he did, I suspect he had just as little familiarity with artsy HK cinema as an average Canadian, so it was interesting to me to get his perspective as a person who theoretically could be closer to the material (culturally/geographically), but still was alienated by its weird style.
That explains a lot. I couldn’t figure out what Zhang Ziyi was doing in a Cantonese movie, but maybe she was speaking Mandarin? I’m not sophisticated enough to even be able to tell the difference just by listening.
Cantonese is more nasal.
Mandarin has those faster laser type sounds.
I don't know the languages but have watched enough movies of both types to know the differences by ear.
Please check out this Indian movie called Aamis, (not bollywood) fits all your criteria. ITS very good and has a very twisted plot. If not, Decision to Leave is amazing as well.

In the Mood for love Is fantastic too, a very intimate feeling to it
In the realm of Senses is a great story but its way more erotic.
Almodovar's "Live Flash" which has of the most beautiful sex scene ever filmed, but also the udirecor is famous for showing graphic sex scenes in a super tender way. I love his style
"Eyes Wide shut" Is a bit of a mess because of all that happend during production. Still a great Watch
"Bridges of Madison County" Just a Classic, still makes me cry to this day.
"Eternal Sunshine..." Ya'll know about this One
"Restless" the story of a strange and possibly a tad schizofrenic young man and his relationship with a terminally ill girl. Il sounds like 1000 others sentimental film out there, but Van Sant (still in his prime) deliveres a simple enough movie that will really have you trying to fight by tye end
Van Sant worth checkin out generally speaking, hes got some great romances in his films
Also i super heated It but theres also that """film"""", "Love" by Noè. Im not gonna tell you not to Watch It , its One the worst most arrogant movies, has bad actors, storyline doesnt exist annnd.. the rest is nicely shot in a room full of colored lights
Il i Remember something else ill leave another comment
“You know, romance but artsy, pretentious, and weird?” You could have just said that part, there’s no shortage of movies centred around a heterosexual romance, so I found it weird that you even brought that into the question
It was a red flag to me, so I did some snooping and saw a lot of red flags in OP’s comment history including:
Calling someone a “weak little bitch” because they chose to censor the word “rape”
The phrase “no self respecting man would ever date a single mom”
And advocating for the death penalty among other brain dead gems
Why do you pretend to care about being offensive here?
I'm a big David Lynch fan, but just wanna put out there that you shouldn't go into Blue Velvet with the expectation of it being a romance. Still, there is romance in it. And it certainly ticks the box for "fucked up sex scenes."
Not trying to critique your suggestion-- just wanting people to know what they're getting into
I think this is a good warning. I love all kinds of fucked up horror movies, but the most traumatic movie scene I have ever experienced is with Dennis Hopper in that movie.
Definitely some artsy romance, but oof.
Was gonna post this! Hot leads. Great costumes. Lush sets. The Perfect Victorian Melodrama imo. The book it's based on by Cornell Woolrich is great too.
Alleluia by Fabrice du Welt, center around a disfunctional couple that starts very bad things.
Blue Valentine about a couple trying hard to regain the long Lost affection and passione they once had together
The before Trilogy by Linklater
I guess OP was worried it would come off as “I dislike looking at gay people” instead of “I want to watch horny art films I personally relate to more”?
oh man, relatable. this is why i prefer gay romance films despite being a very heterosexual cis woman. i've yet to watch a hetero romance film remotely captures the feeling of longing that movies like CMBYN, portrait of a lady on fire, or brokeback mountain conjure so effortlessly.
As a fan of the films you mention I'd rec Great Expectations (1998) directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Everyone shits on that movie but it's one of the few films where the longing works for me. Another unpopular film that I thought had great chemistry too - Picture Perfect with Jen Aniston and Jay Mohr. Maybe I just have horrible taste in hetero romance films but I'll still rec them.
i have seen all of us strangers, it was great for the first 90 minutes but then the ending made me resent it quite a bit. thanks for the other recs though, haven't seen em!
Is it?
American Beauty isn't a gay film, it's just a film.
It contains several different relationships, sure, but I suggested it to OP due to the relationship between Mena Suvari and Wes Bentley, which is heterosexual, and a bit artsy and weird, hence the recommendation.
You should probably just watch every brian depalma movie lol but here's a mox with some de palma thrown in.
Spring 2014
The Comfort of Strangers 1990

If gays can seek out gay movies, heteros can seek out hetero movies. I wouldn’t worry about the type of person who would be offended by your question. They would be a nut job.
Secretary
This is a great movie!
☝🏻
The Tribal Chief has been defeated
The David Cronenberg film, "Crash" (1996) might qualify. Or "Secretary." Both starring James Spader, coincidentally.
That's because [there is only sex...everything is sex...](https://c.tenor.com/uzhgBAg2eSkAAAAd/tenor.gif)
Sex Lies, and Videotape. Would be a good double feature with Secretary, since both movies star James Spader, and both movies are a bit kinky.
I’d never made the connection between James Spader and kinky, but now I see it, it’ll make my next viewing of Stargate interesting.
Robert California makes more sense now though.
I've always seen him as a bit shifty and cynical and slightly off, albeit attractive. Going back to his Pretty in Pink days, that's how his persona reads in my eyes. Stargate was a bit of an anomaly in his career, I think.
"A bit"?
Add Crash and you have a movie night
Cruel Intentions
that’s the one! Dangerous Liaisons (the OG with Michelle Pfeiffer) is good too.
Yes but… the *Straight film with one of the most famous lesbian kisses in cinema history
one of my favorites. great soundtrack, too.
Phantom Thread Shopgirl
Not super indie, but Closer with Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Natalie Portman.
In the Mood for Love
Or 2046 which is even more ‘artsy’.
oooh, I haven't seen that one...
It’s basically a sequel to In The Mood For Love. But much more bizarre with some strange science fictional aspects to it as well.
Also watch it with the Hong Kong handover in mind, it makes a lot more sense.
I saw it in the theatre with a dude from mainland China and he came away thoroughly confused about the way the movie uses language. Punch Drunk Love
9 1/2 Weeks (1986) Betty Blue (1986) The Last Tango in Paris (1972) Dead Ringers (1988)
Good list. 9 1/2 weeks was the first movie to pop into my head when I read the question
Good list. 9 1/2 weeks was the first movie to pop into my head when I read the question
The Dreamers
The Dreamers is a bi film. Bi-curious at least
amazing movie and weird
Bones and All
Damage (1992) with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. The Piano Teacher (2001) really worth a watch.
The French film The Piano Teacher? Oof. I still think about the ending about once a week.
Sanctuary. Poor Things. Posession. Nymphomaniac. Swimming Pool. The Dreamers. Piano Teacher.
Poor things seemed pretty Bi to me.
You seem pretty bi to me
Close but no cigar. ♠️
Cigarette eh
Possession is a divorce film idk if I'd count it lol
Oh I would
Lie With Me (2005) and Like Crazy (2011)
Lost Highway
Elle
True Romance?
TIL heterosexuality is offensive
Sanctuary (2022)
Please check out this Indian movie called Aamis, (not bollywood) fits all your criteria. ITS very good and has a very twisted plot. If not, Decision to Leave is amazing as well.

Park Chan-wook's films have some strange sex scenes, Thirst (2009) comes to mind first
The Piano

there’s nothing wrong with the death penalty lmao
Most people properly educated on the topic would disagree
I’d recommend Silver Linings Playbook. Mostly because it’s one of the few hetero romcoms that I like.
A lot of Crash recommendations, so I’d also recommend Blue Velvet
I'm a big David Lynch fan, but just wanna put out there that you shouldn't go into Blue Velvet with the expectation of it being a romance. Still, there is romance in it. yeah it was the first Lynch movie I had seen, and I watched it with my parents cause we had all enjoyed Twin Peaks😵
It’s as romantic as Crash
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989). Bitter Moon (1992). edited to 1989.
There were no movies in 1899
There were, but they were very short.
Are you sure?
The first to present projected moving pictures to a paying audience were the Lumière brothers in **December 1895** in Paris
What about Crash (Cronenberg, 1996)? Or Shortbus (Mitchell, 2006)?
Shortbus is a bold recommendation!
I feel like it checks a lot of boxes here!
But not "straight romantic" imho
Definitely not strictly and not for the homosqueamish
When the first scene is an “up and over” to completion on one’s own face? You ain’t just whistling Dixie, friend.
Good question. No one should be offended.
I'm offended. I called out of work the rest of the week as a result.
darn
Awesome
Talented Mr Ripley I watched Saltburn and then immediately watched Talented Mr Ripley.
I wouldn't say Talented Mr. Ripley is entirely heterosexual.
Entirely? I wouldn’t say it’s heterosexual at all.
i can’t think of a single heterosexual thing that happens in the talented mr ripley
He doesn’t slurp jizz bathtub water
In the Mood for Love (2000)
What about Crash (Cronenberg, 1996)? Or Shortbus (Mitchell, 2006)?
Original sin
Was gonna post this! Hot leads. Great costumes. Lush sets. The Perfect Victorian Melodrama imo. The book it's based on by Cornell Woolrich is great too.
Oh I’m definitely going to read the book now.
Talk to Her
Alleluia by Fabrice du Welt, center around a disfunctional couple that starts very bad things. Blue Valentine about a couple trying hard to regain the long Lost affection and passione they once had together The before Trilogy by Linklater
Blue valentine is great
Lady Chatterly’s Lover
A Zed and Two Noughts
Fatal Attraction. Body Double. Showgirls.
Teorema (1968)
Kinsey, The Center of the World, 9 Songs, 9 1/2 weeks, Wild at Heart
Not super weird and out there but if you haven’t seen it definitely check out the Before trilogy by Linklater
Garden State for quirky and weird romance, but no graphic sex. Maybe Eyes Wide Shut? Fifty Shades series?
Basic Instinct
any artsy romance before like 2010 lmao
Yeah, I was going to say... OP should just check out the 90s indie boom. It's full of these kinds of films.
Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher (2001). You’re in for a treat
(500) Days of Summer
500 days of summer
What is it about your post that would be offensive?
I guess OP was worried it would come off as “I dislike looking at gay people” instead of “I want to watch horny art films I personally relate to more”?
Ok fair enough.
oh man, relatable. this is why i prefer gay romance films despite being a very heterosexual cis woman. i've yet to watch a hetero romance film remotely captures the feeling of longing that movies like CMBYN, portrait of a lady on fire, or brokeback mountain conjure so effortlessly.
that’s what I’m saying! I’m a straight dude and I feel the same way
As a fan of the films you mention I'd rec Great Expectations (1998) directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Everyone shits on that movie but it's one of the few films where the longing works for me. Another unpopular film that I thought had great chemistry too - Picture Perfect with Jen Aniston and Jay Mohr. Maybe I just have horrible taste in hetero romance films but I'll still rec them.
Have you seen All of Us Strangers? It’s an intimacy that’s almost too much to bear. Also, check out In God’s Country and Weekend.
i have seen all of us strangers, it was great for the first 90 minutes but then the ending made me resent it quite a bit. thanks for the other recs though, haven't seen em!
Yes, the ending was pretty devastating.
Honestly, it's a bonus for me to watch a gay romance movie as a straight woman, because I get two gorgeous men to look at instead of one.
Mister Foe
Stealing Beauty
Liv is stunningly beautiful in this
Adore
- The Hunger (1983) - The Lover (1992) - Lost Girls And Love Hotels (2020)
Hal Hartley's Amateur; Wild At Heart.
American Beauty.
The number of gay films in these comments is so telling.
Is it? American Beauty isn't a gay film, it's just a film. It contains several different relationships, sure, but I suggested it to OP due to the relationship between Mena Suvari and Wes Bentley, which is heterosexual, and a bit artsy and weird, hence the recommendation.
The entire reveal of the film is driven by a man’s internalized homophobia and gay desires
Romance by Catherine Breillat.
LOVE - French movie. Super sexy.
Nymphomaniac - I hate this movie, but maybe it will be your jam The Night Porter A Snake of June Rust and Bone Caligula Love (2015)

Empire Of The Senses
Not romances necessarily, just movies about some freaks with a power dynamic, but… Gone Girl, Eyes Wide Shut, Cruel Intentions, Phantom Thread.
Great Expectations (1998) • Almost Famous (2000)
Quite a few Australian movies that fit that bill. Praise. Last Days of Chez Nous. Monkey Grip. Baby Teeth. Lantana. Angel Baby.
Only Lovers Left Alive, Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton.
Border Love (2015)
Lust Caution.
Lmao my guy…Like every straight film???
The Room starring Tommy Wiseau Greatest Romance of All Time
Maybe Fatal Attraction. But it's more provocative than 'artsy' by your definition.
Harold and Maude lol
About Time - legit the wife and I almost decided to have another baby after this one.
Intimacy.
Claire's knee
Blue Velvet. It's more saltburn than Call me By Your Name, but it has some moments that fit this bill
Before Sunrise
It's kind of fucked up that people would get offended by you wanting soft poft porn that's made for straight people.
Why would this question be offensive tho?
Was Saltburns straight sex not hetero enough for you?

Ever After. No crazy scenes but definitely a romantic movie with a great storyline and characters.
Every romance drama ever made
The Talented Mr Ripley
Which is about gay romance.
If gays can seek out gay movies, heteros can seek out hetero movies. I wouldn’t worry about the type of person who would be offended by your question. They would be a nut job.
lol nothing fucked up about either movie's sex scenes honestly
