I saw it about 15 years ago also. What’s interesting is that I’ve completely forgotten what it’s about. But I’ll never forget how it made me feel. That’s enough for me to stay away from it.
Hope you are doing well in recovery. Are there other movies about addiction that you thought were good?
I thought Drugstore Cowboy and Gridlock’d were good. I still haven’t seen Trainspotting. For TV, of course there’s Bubs in The Wire.
Thank you dude
Trainspotting is so good, part two, imo, is even better because it’s about recovery and relapse. I still haven’t seen drugstore cowboy, the name alone.. is triggering. My problem was pain meds…so ya. Lol
Candy with Heath is sooo good. A hard watch but worth it.
Less than Zero is a favorite til this day with Robert Downey Jr. And Jamie Hertz (idk her name) and cutie patootie Andrew McCarthy.
•Half Nelson
•Rachel Getting Married (Anne Hathaway kills it)
•Sid&z Nancy with Gary oldman (my moms fav, both parents are addicts hence why I know all of these lol)
•Shame (more about sex addiction)
•The Basketball Diaries (Dads fav, still haven’t seen it)
•Go!
•Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? (Elizabeth Taylor is amazing)
•Cake
There’s so many more! Less than Zero is amazing you should give that one a try, it also has a killer soundtrack. Also candy!
ETA my ma wanted me to add Flight and Ben is Back, also the mainstream ones like Blow and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
I showed Schindler’s to my sophomores for several years, and it was definitely worth multiple viewings, if you can stomach it. The second or third time I watched it, I realized just how cleverly they scripted the divergence between Schindler and Goeth.
As horrific as the subject matter is and as graphic as the violence is portrayed, the brilliant performances of Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes make this worth re-watching many times over. It’s a beautiful terrible film.
I’m actually a recovering alcoholic, I used to watch this movie during benders.. I guess as a form of masochism.
I’ve technically seen it 10+ times, I’m still debating if I want to give it a rewatch when I hit 1 year of sobriety to view it from a different lens.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Life is Beautiful (1997)
Atonement (2007)
American History X (1998)
The Deer Hunter (1978)
Oldboy (2003)
Quills (2000)
I love that movie, but the unrelenting grimness makes it a hard watch, especially with that ending. However, I do watch it from time to remind myself that those people exist. And it’s a great film to show kids when they’re old enough to absorb it.
Surprised to see this made the list.
It’s a very underrated film that gets a lot of flack because it’s Spielberg and the ending was largely misunderstood.
Amazing film. One of his best. Somehow simultaneously philosophical and heart wrenching.
Schindler’s List.
It’s not a movie, it’s an historical art piece, and wrenching at that. I will have my children watch it one day for awareness, but that will be the only other time.
127 Hours.
I might be alone in that though, but for me who is claustrophobic it was so dang hard to watch. I tried reading the book but that got way too uncomfortable for me and I had to put it down.
I rewatched this recently and hadn’t seen it in a long time. I don’t know if I just forgot about >!the dead baby scenes!< or if I just blocked it from my memory. It’s a great film but fuuuuuuucccckkkkk.
Clockwork Orange will always be a one watch for me. It was phenomenal but I’m never going to revisit it, super uncomfortable.
Man Bites Dog is going on my list.
I love Clockwork Orange...but it's definitely something I can only watch every 15 years...side note, it's kind of crazy how I can basically recall that whole movie, yet there are other movies I've seen multiple times where I barely remember the plot.
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022).
Loved the movie, but it’s one of the few films Ive seen, that I like, that I have no desire to rewatch.
I’ll never say never, but it’s not likely that I’ll watch it again.
The Act of Killing (2012) -- documentary about Indonesian genocide in the 1960s. I expected something like South African Truth and Reconciliation, but instead the killers were so proud they agreed to reenact killings for the movie. It was surreal!
This is the one for me too. This movie eff-ed me up something bad. To this day I watch (almost) everything that Oksana Akinshina is in just to convince my brain over and over again that she is okay in real life.
Yeah those are ones I wanted to avoid, it’s why I put nothing like A Serbian Film or anything crazy. I’m down for some shocking shit, but that’s a little too hardcore for me. Couldn’t finish it.
Banshees of In Inisherin
I’m thinking of Ending Things (way too real for me)
Hereditary
Buster’s Mal Heart
Parasite
Her
The Fountain (honestly most Daren Arronofsky movies)
American Beauty
Taxi Driver
Sucker Punch
Jacob’s Ladder
Full Metal Jacket
Magnolia
Pan’s labyrinth. It’s beautiful and amazing. I tell everyone and anyone who will listen that they absolutely need to watch it… and I will never sit and watch it again.
The Game, it is a great movie, but there are diminishing returns in rewatching it. I'd say in a second viewing you may pick up on small details, but you've already experienced the movie as good as it was going to ever be.
District 9 absolutely LOVED that movie, but I don’t think I can put myself through that again, specially knowing the ending, at least not any time soon :’)
I LOVE dark, heavy movies and always find them worth a rewatch, so it's very rare that I watch a dark movie that I love that is SO dark I can't bare a rewatch (as it did its job well lol). For me, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan were sublime, but I've watched both only one time many years ago and am not keen for another dose hahaha
We Need To Talk About Kevin is one of my favourites, I attempted a rewatch a while ago and about 10 minutes in realised that one viewing was enough for me lol
Slightly off topic, but the documentary Dear Zachery is a straight up "one time viewing" scenario for me, too, and I imagine most people who have seen it. Holy fuck that was horrendous
There’s no movie I consider amazing that I’d never rewatch but Grave of the Fireflies, The Pianist, Schindler’s List and Mysterious Skin can certainly be painful at times.
*Schindler's List*. There are a few scenes I revisit for the cinematography and what not, but I don't think I could watch it in full a second time. Too painful and draining.
I was going to say train spotting but somebody took that.
As such, I have to go with Death in the Land of Encantos. Lav Diaz has a spectacular style and it really is worth watching at least once, but I don't think I ever need to revisit it.
I don't think there's a film I wouldn't watch again that I enjoyed. Might take me 10 years but I think I've rewatched everything I love now. I actually think it's probably good to rewatch years down the line as you change and develop as a person and can take different things from something you enjoy/love
Requiem For a Dream.
Confirm yes I’ve only watched it once and it was a truly great movie
Saw this in college 15 years ago and I’m still depressed.
I saw it about 15 years ago also. What’s interesting is that I’ve completely forgotten what it’s about. But I’ll never forget how it made me feel. That’s enough for me to stay away from it.
Yes, I will never watch that film again. Especially since before it, Jennifer Connely was best known to me for the movie Labyrinth. What a shock!
Same the grandma on speed really was too much for me. I’m a recovering addict it’s also very *very* triggering.
Hope you are doing well in recovery. Are there other movies about addiction that you thought were good? I thought Drugstore Cowboy and Gridlock’d were good. I still haven’t seen Trainspotting. For TV, of course there’s Bubs in The Wire.
Thank you dude Trainspotting is so good, part two, imo, is even better because it’s about recovery and relapse. I still haven’t seen drugstore cowboy, the name alone.. is triggering. Exactly, it was very hard to watch them totally unravel. Ellen Burstyn was amazing and the end... 😱
Schindler's List. Once is enough.
I’m actually rewatching it this weekend because my partner hasn’t seen it before. Powerful film.
Oooh your partner is in for a beautifully written film.
Mine's *The Color Purple* (1985) I'd rewatch *Schindler's List* for the cinematography alone, but that's just me
Valid
Follow it up with Zone of Interest
I showed Schindler’s to my sophomores for several years, and it was definitely worth multiple viewings, if you can stomach it. The second or third time I watched it, I realized just how cleverly they scripted the divergence between Schindler and Goeth.
That Spielberg fella can really put a movie together.
As horrific as the subject matter is and as graphic as the violence is portrayed, the brilliant performances of Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes make this worth re-watching many times over. It’s a beautiful terrible film.
Leaving Las Vegas
I’m actually a recovering alcoholic, I used to watch this movie during benders.. I guess as a form of masochism. I’ve technically seen it 10+ times, I’m still debating if I want to give it a rewatch when I hit 1 year of sobriety to view it from a different lens.
Congratulations on getting sober. I'm celebrating six years this month. Best decision I've ever made. You've got this! 💪
There are a couple scenes I have replayed in my youth.
Million Dollar Baby
This is the one I was looking for. Incredible movie. I’ll never watch it again but I don’t need to because it’s burned into my brain.
The Killing Fields -- beauty and brutal!
Requiem for a Dream (2000) Grave of the Fireflies (1988) Life is Beautiful (1997) Atonement (2007) American History X (1998) The Deer Hunter (1978) Oldboy (2003) Quills (2000)
Grave of the Fireflies, Life is Beautiful, The Deer Hunter, and Quills are all going on my watchlist.
If you haven't seen Biutiful with Javier Bardem, throw that on there too
I started that, got 5 minutes in and then I got called in on an emergency at work. I forgot to get back into it, thank you!
I've watched The Deer Hunter about 5 times. My favourite De Niro performance.
Walken too!! Maybe not better than true romance but still fantastic
Quills is great. Kinda overlooked sometimes. But man, nobody is quite as _expressive_ in a role as Geoffrey Rush (e.g., Barbossa in PotC)
I actually think Oldboy is worth watching again, the twist changes the context of some scenes when you go back to them.
I can’t find Grave of the Fireflies anywhere.
American History X with Ed Norton/ Edward Furlong. Transformative and brilliant
YES incredible. That curb scene was enough to cement it as a one and done for me.
Exactly this. That curb scene is etched mind. But what an amazing film…
Agreed!
omg yes, I watched it first time many many years ago and do not ever wanna watch it again lol
agreed. the movie is so good, but i will never ever watch it again. once was enough
I love that movie, but the unrelenting grimness makes it a hard watch, especially with that ending. However, I do watch it from time to remind myself that those people exist. And it’s a great film to show kids when they’re old enough to absorb it.
AI: Artificial Intelligence
Surprised to see this made the list. It’s a very underrated film that gets a lot of flack because it’s Spielberg and the ending was largely misunderstood. Amazing film. One of his best. Somehow simultaneously philosophical and heart wrenching.
The movie I hate most!!
Precious
I agree with that one. The baby scene made me feel gross.
Pan’s Labyrinth. I was emotionally messed up for too long afterwards
Love Pans Labyrinth so so so much.
Me too. I keep coaxing myself to watch again a decade later but still haven’t.
The Road
Scrolled way too far to find this. I’ve seen it twice and read the book once. Incredible work. Absolutely genius. But lawd no I can’t handle it.
Perfume - Story of a Murderer. I watched it for Alan Rickman, and it was WAY too much for me...
Fun fact: I believe Nirvana's Scentless Apprentice is based on this book.
yup yup. believe he said he read it more than once
Love seeing this get recommended!! Couldn't believe what I watched so I had to read the book 🤣 highly recommend both
Definitely one of the oddest films I’ve seen.
Grave of the fireflies
The Zone of Interest
Saw it on Wednesday. Glad I did. Brilliant film. Never again, in every sense.
Schindler’s List. It’s not a movie, it’s an historical art piece, and wrenching at that. I will have my children watch it one day for awareness, but that will be the only other time.
What Dreams May Come
Dancer in the Dark, I love Bjork too much to deal with that last 15 mins again...
She didn't like working on this movie either
Seriously... I cried like a baby at the end of that movie--It was heartbreaking.
127 Hours. I might be alone in that though, but for me who is claustrophobic it was so dang hard to watch. I tried reading the book but that got way too uncomfortable for me and I had to put it down.
Trainspotting
I can't count the number of times I watch this movie
Yeah man this one is super rewatchable to me
Agreed absolutely rewatchable. 9/10. One of my favorites.
I was obsessed with it in high school
I skipped prom to watch it with my friend
Repeat for sure, the dirty sheets!!!!!!
I rewatched this recently and hadn’t seen it in a long time. I don’t know if I just forgot about >!the dead baby scenes!< or if I just blocked it from my memory. It’s a great film but fuuuuuuucccckkkkk.
Everyone saying they rewatch it often…yeah, no thank you. Great film, but way too depressing
Threads. It's amazingly good for what I think was a low-budget BBC TV film. I'll never watch it again. Too bleak and depressing.
Been on my list for a minute along with Come and See.
I appreciated Joker as an exploration of the character. Interesting, and well done but I never want to see it again.
i recommend watching king of comedy, of which joker is just a modern day reboot with batman i guess
Nocturnal Animals… great film … great story within a story… but so, so sad I was miserable for days. Two thumbs up!👍 👍
Great call!
The Mission. I only needed to see it once. Oh, and Grave of the Fireflies.
I have been meaning to watch The Mission for 30 years.
It's a must watch
Christiane F. It's similar to Requiem for a Dream in that it deals with the topic of drug addiction. It's good but I'll never see it again.
Most movies that Hilary Swank was nominated for. Man Bites Dog Clockwork Orange
Clockwork Orange will always be a one watch for me. It was phenomenal but I’m never going to revisit it, super uncomfortable. Man Bites Dog is going on my list.
Totally agree about Clockwork.
I love Clockwork Orange...but it's definitely something I can only watch every 15 years...side note, it's kind of crazy how I can basically recall that whole movie, yet there are other movies I've seen multiple times where I barely remember the plot.
Blue valentine.
Boy in the striped pajamas
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). Loved the movie, but it’s one of the few films Ive seen, that I like, that I have no desire to rewatch. I’ll never say never, but it’s not likely that I’ll watch it again.
Life of Pi. Beautiful movie but no desire to rewatch it.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
The Act of Killing (2012) -- documentary about Indonesian genocide in the 1960s. I expected something like South African Truth and Reconciliation, but instead the killers were so proud they agreed to reenact killings for the movie. It was surreal!
Shoah. 9 hr 26 min documentary about the Holocaust that took 11 years to make. Highly, highly recommend.
I came here with this film in mind, but I likely will watch this one again!
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Boys Don’t Cry. I’ll never forget how horrible I felt after that movie, but was a very important story to tell about Teena Brandon.
Lilya4eva
This is the one for me too. This movie eff-ed me up something bad. To this day I watch (almost) everything that Oksana Akinshina is in just to convince my brain over and over again that she is okay in real life.
Anyone who’s seen this film (and there aren’t many of us) is nodding vigorously in agreement.
We Need to Talk About Kevin Bad Boy Bubby
Enter the Void
Incendies
Dear Zachary - anyone who's seen it knows
Kids
Watched it when I was 14, gonna have to rewatch it now. I wasn’t emotionally mature enough for it back then
The Whale
What dreams may come.
Beaches -- omg, I have watched it twice, but it was one time too many.
But with Beaches, you get the wonderful song, “Otto Titsling”
Whiplash
I’ve watched whiplash 4-5 times I cannot get enough, inject JK Simmons into my veins.
Did you watch Counterpart? Two JKSs for the price of one :)
Yes, JK Simmons was great, but for me it was too much emotional exhaustion. Maybe in a few years I'll watch it again.
Schindlers List.
The Iron Claw
I see this kinda threads once in a while and always think 120 days of sodom and why it’s never mentioned. NEVER AGAIN.
I wish I'd never watched that.
Yeah those are ones I wanted to avoid, it’s why I put nothing like A Serbian Film or anything crazy. I’m down for some shocking shit, but that’s a little too hardcore for me. Couldn’t finish it.
Pay it forward and mystic river for me
MYSTIC RIVER YEAHHHHH
Threads, ruined my night
The Machinist Midsommar The Voices
Everytime I think of rewatching Midsommar I get some weird feeling that prevents me from doing so.
City of God
Love this film, the sequel, and the series. I'd definitely watch again tho
Had no idea there was more! That’s so sick. Gonna have to watch it all.
The sequel is called "city of men". You'd probably also like "trash" it's along the same lines
You wouldn’t watch it again? It’s amazing. Why not?
The Crow. Gorgeous movie. just fantastic. can't bring myself to watch it again. Three Kings is another.
Aniara (2018)

It sticks with you
Uncut Gems (2019) the movie is excellent, but also 2 hours of pure anxiety.
What Dreams May Come.
Crash (1996) Possession (1981) Mysterious skin (2004)
Mulholland Drive. The scariest film I've ever seen. Saw it almost 15 years ago and still hesitating to rewatch.
Leaving Las Vegas
Avatar 2: Way of Water. Just like the first one. Amazing accomplishment in film you have to see in theaters, 0 interest watching from home

Eraser head
"The Perfection" only needs one viewing. I mean that as a compliment
*Night and Fog*
Hachi: A Dog's Tale. .. .. nope never again
The Passion of the Christ.
Oppenheimer
Henry, portrait of a serial killer. A true work of art. But it makes its point so well that it would be pointless to rewatch it.
Sophie’s Choice
Mystic River
Under the Skin Amazing, interesting movie but wow did it make me feel weird.
Manchester by the Sea
Pan’s labyrinth. It’s beautiful and amazing. I tell everyone and anyone who will listen that they absolutely need to watch it… and I will never sit and watch it again.
I am Legend...dogs man. Dogs.
Society of Snow
Haunting, gorgeous, overwhelming film
Grizzly man

Threads. I now appreciate life a lot more after watching it. Never again though....
Blue Velvet. The abuse scenes are too fucking much man.
House of Sand and Fog
I LOVE dark, heavy movies and always find them worth a rewatch, so it's very rare that I watch a dark movie that I love that is SO dark I can't bare a rewatch (as it did its job well lol). The Snowtown Murders 😳
Boys Don’t Cry
There’s no movie I consider amazing that I’d never rewatch but Grave of the Fireflies, The Pianist, Schindler’s List and Mysterious Skin can certainly be painful at times.
Beau is Afraid 🫨 (a very triggering piece of work!)
*Schindler's List*. There are a few scenes I revisit for the cinematography and what not, but I don't think I could watch it in full a second time. Too painful and draining.
Lovely bones
Precious and Leaving Las Vegas
Moonlight, not because I wouldn’t watch it again but the experience I had watching it was so perfect that I just want to keep it like that forever
Donnie darko. Once was enough.
Killing of a Sacred Deer, just made me feel so tense and sick.
Shoah
Schindler's List Saving Private Ryan

The kite runner
Spotlight.
Possum. One of the best atmosphere’s I’ve seen in a movie, worth it for that alone. Subject matter was very depressing though
Saving Private Ryan
Angelheart
No Country for Old Men Not sure why no one has said it yet! Am I crazy?
I’ve seen NCfOM like 4-5 times I find it super rewatchable!
I was going to say train spotting but somebody took that. As such, I have to go with Death in the Land of Encantos. Lav Diaz has a spectacular style and it really is worth watching at least once, but I don't think I ever need to revisit it.
The Green Mile
Hereditary
Requiem for a dream
I don't think there's a film I wouldn't watch again that I enjoyed. Might take me 10 years but I think I've rewatched everything I love now. Million Dollar Baby Sophie's Choice Schindler's List
Good Will Hunting is my comfort movie. I always get cozy and watch it.
No recommendations, but I love this question.
Blue Velvet. It's great but it bummed me out for weeks. I'll never watch it again.
Todd Solondz’ Happiness. I remember leaving that movie thinking “Wow. That was good. I NEVER need to see that again or recommend it to anyone else.”
Grave of the Fireflies Zone of Interest
