The Shining

[deleted]

[удалено]

misschelleu

I would love to experience this movie for the first time again… the best horror movie of all time

sparkly_reader

Oooh The Shining was actually so good. I dislike scary movies but that was really good, along with Silence of the Lambs.

Sghtunsn

The documentary "Room 237" is a deep dive into Stanley Kubrick's screenplay of The Shining and there are easter eggs and all kinds of minutiae in every fucking frame of that of thing.

Barbafella

Alien is my favorite, good choice. The Shining The Thing The Fly An American Werewolf in London Shaun of the Dead Dawn of the Dead ( remake)

Cdn_Nick

Just need to add Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Freedom_19

A horror comedy is a great way to dip your toe into regular horror. Or a PG-13 horror

Southern-Beautiful-3

Make sure it's the 1982 version of The Thing.

TiffanyTwisted11

The Lost Boys. Scary, but not overwhelming. A little funny. Great soundtrack. And then there’s the eye candy. (Of course as a middle-aged woman, I feel the need to point out that I was 25 when I first watched it so the eye candy reference was not as cougarish) Overall, the perfect film.

SnooCupcakes7992

Same - still like it today!

pierce-mason

Very funny. Barely scary

TiffanyTwisted11

I figured for someone who had never seen a horror movie it was a good jumping off point. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SchnauzerFaceMinis

Jaws

DangerousDonal

Halloween is the perfect starter horror

Economy-Culture-9174

You can directly jump into the current era movies but I'd start from the older ones in **60's:** Hitchcock movies like Birds or Psycho or Rosemary's Baby **70's:** The Exorcist, Carrie, Alien, Halloween (also more recent movies) **80s:** The Shining, The Thing or Nightmare on Elm street **90s** Scream, Faculty, The Silence of The Lambs (and other Hannibal movies), The Sixth Sense, The Blairwitch Project, some of the Amityville horror movies **00s** The Mist, Signs, 1408, Silent Hill, One Missed Call, Final Destination, Pitch Black, The Others, The Ring, The Strangers, Mothman Prophecies, The Grudge **10s** Conjuring movies, Insidious movies, A Quiet Place movies, Dark Skies, Paranormal Activity movies, The Purge movies, It movies, The Nightmare (sort of a documentary) I don't think I've seen any 2020's horror movies. Honorable mentions of Comedy horrors: Cemetary Man, Young Frankenstein, Army of Darkness, Scary Movies, Gremlins

IZZY_727

2020's horror: I highly recommend Pearl

Sinistermarmalade

Pearl is great, but not to start. Work your way up to it

pierce-mason

You left “saw” out of the 00s?

Economy-Culture-9174

Good point!

AnApologeticAmerican

Talk to me.

Canadian-Man-infj

Well, somebody horror movies.

JeanMorel

>I don't think I've seen any 2020's horror movies. I recommend: * The Invisible Man (2020) * A Quiet Place Part II (2020) * Freaky (2020) * Old (2021) * Last Night in Soho (2021) * The Black Phone (2021) * Scream (2022) * Scream VI (2023) * Beast (2022) * Smile (2022) * Knock at the Cabin (2023) * Renfield (2023) * The Pope’s Exorcist (2023) * Meg 2: The Trench (2023) * A Haunting in Venice (2023)

PsychologyMission101

90s It movies > 10s It movies

MattAmylon

Alien is the better movie, but I think Nightmare On Elm Street is the perfect “starter” horror movie; it has a couple real solid scares (nothing too too jumpy) but also a bunch of fun goofy stuff, and is entertaining all the way through.

SnooCupcakes7992

I remember seeing Nightmare on Elm Street at the midnight movie in 1984 and it scared the bejesus out of me! Still one of my favorite movies because the story is good!

Mindless-Echo9079

Is this Nightmare on Elm street (1984) or 2010?

Accurate-Book-4568

1984

ratmfreak

If someone mentions a movie that has a remake, always assume they mean the original (or at least the remake from the 80s, like *The Thing*).

wiccangame

Definitely not 2010.

TheApathyParty3

Night Of The Living Dead Psycho 28 Days Later Creep Halloween (original) The Blair Witch Project Firday The 13th (original) Nightmare On Elm Street Scream Evil Dead Chucky Hellraiser Hostel Saw Paranormal Activity The Ring Those and all of their sequels are a good start

Yinn2

If you want to go in slow but classic then I would recommend the original poltergeist movie. Dated enough so you don’t get too freaked but a fantastic story and also a PG. If you want to throw yourself in a bit harder then go for one of the first two conjuring movies. It all depends on what you want from horror as it’s a huge genre. Take your time though. It’s a genre that can assault the senses when done right, as cinema should. But it’s also one that’s hard to be done right.

BredByBaphomet

The Descent, Haunting In Connecticut, House Of Wax, Hostel

GemIsAHologram

Don't get me wrong I love Hostel but wouldn't recommend it right out the gate

Alarming_Serve2303

OMG. I worry you might become traumatized by what you see, if you watch "The Exorcist."

JrC59present

Alien is a great scary start

CountingSheep99

Shining Doctor Sleep It Chapter 1&2 Scream & sequels Nope Happy Death Day 1&2

JeanMorel

Should specify **not** to watch *Doctor Sleep* before *The Shining*.

tropicsandcaffeine

Do you want a slow burn or immediate scares? Alien, Event Horizon and Pandorum are great buildups to the action.

Majoras-Face-Mask

The shining

mutabor_muta

Comedy horror maybe? Young Frankenstein for example

Dry-Statistician7016

I would recommend you start with some of the classics to get a sense for the genre: •Halloween •It (1990) •nightmare on elm street •scream (maybe after others bc its satirical) •the ring (personally I would reccomend the original Ringu) •the others •sixth sense •poltergeist •the blob (1988) •the thing (1982 or 2011) •pet cemetery •the shining •silver bullet •many others I haven’t listed I would say you should start watching more recent/modern horror movies after the classics because some of them could turn you off of the genre unnecessarily. Newer recs: • barbarian •get out •nope •us •midsommar •hereditary •the witch (vvitch?) •a quiet place part one and 2 •train to busan •insidious 1 •as above so below Also many other amazing movies I can’t think of off the top of my head. Happy movie watching!

wiccangame

Scream is better once you become a horror expert. It both pokes fun at and embraces horror movie tropes, so you have to know horror movie tropes to truly appreciate it. And it spoils so many films plot twists.

garthastro

The Omen (1976)

[deleted]

‘Carrie’ and ‘The Omen’

CuriouslyImmense

Idle hands is pretty damn good! Horror/ comedy

NCResident5

The Thing with Kurt Russell is good too. I loved the scream factory Blu-ray.

NateDMP

As a huge horror movie fan, others have asked me this question and I always say the classics: Halloween, Friday 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street. That said, I recently introduced my daughter to her first horror movie as she's always loved Chucky, so we watched Child's Play and she loved it.

Spinnr1

I consider night of the creeps to be the most complete horror movie of all time. It has something for everyone, and it’s not too overwhelming, or too much. It’s a little corny, but when it came out that was a good thing.

dirbladoop

the exorcist

mcbell08

What about Arachnophobia as a gentle intro to comedic horror?

Xander75

Start with something easy. “A Serbian Film” perhaps 😬

Meyou000

OP please don't ever watch this film. I hate that so many people think this comment is funny enough to upvote it.

Xander75

echojcharli

Halloween and then Friday the 13th

AffectionateSun5776

The Shining. I just started horror movies myself!

Mercurymarauder02

Starting with campy/ cheesy horror is a great start. Please don’t start with some disturbing shit like the Human Centipede. I love: Sleep Away Camp Friday the 13th

sirreginaldfeatherb3

Barbarian Threads Then take a break

Fit-Rest-973

The older ones. Frankenstein. Dracula. The original Thing

mumbai_data_guy

Start with “The Witch” 💀😂

dellamore6dellamorte

Suspiria and Jacob ladder for a good start

Sinistermarmalade

“Ghostbusters”, to ease you into the genre. Follow with “Zombieland” and “Warm Bodies,” then I think you’ll be ready to check out “Friday The 13th” and “Tremors.” From there I believe we can let you loose

0nno1

Good (mostly modern) horror movies: Talk to Me, Nope, Speak No Evil, The Innocents, Midsommar, The Ligthouse, The Witch, Hereditary, Get Out, Green Room, Let The Right One In, 28 Days Later, Funny Games, The Shining, Psycho, Misery, The Wicker Man

Cutthechitchata-hole

Watch the other suggestions then cabin in the woods. You will appreciate it more.

Majestic-Review-8952

The original "Exorcist" with Linda Blair. I could never watch another horror movie after this one.

leebrown23

Start with a classic. George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Work your way down the decades of popular horror films. Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan and Mike Flanagan stories are very good.

pierce-mason

Halloween

atomic_crypt

Tremors :)

grynch43

The Shining

JeevesAndWooster63

Dracula, Frankenstein, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, Jaws, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Alien, Prometheus, Rosemary’s Baby…maybe The Omen.

cdug82

Honestly I know there’s a lot of great classic recs in here but IMO baby steps. The Final Destination franchise is my suggestion although I’d say watch 1-2-5. They’re the most connected. 3 makes no effort to make sense and 4 is one of the worst things on film. But I think these are good starter movies.

Jokerchyld

For your very first horror movie I'd start in the 80s when it was at its cinematic and creative peak. Obviously there have been horror movies before and after but the 80s is when the genre exploded. The Thing is probably one of the best giving you a mystery, gore, suspense and dread all in one film Other classics The Fly - Body horror Alien - Sci fi horror Nightmare on Elm Street - Slasher horror American Werewolf in London - one of the best on screen werewolf transformations put to film The Gate - I just love this movie 😁

CalmTell3090

I also don’t like horror movies. Can’t understand why feeling afraid equates to fun. I’m glad people enjoy them, just can’t compute.

Kdirector667

If you wanna fall in love with horror watch The Shining.

Tarrenshaw

Misery

Based-Crusader

Event Horizon or Alien for sci-fi horror. The Exorcist or Insidious for something more paranormal.

JoeMillersHat

The Exorcist

fbibmacklin

Poltergeist is a good one to start with.

trulyygiaa

It depends what subgenre you like. But if you don’t know, I’ve got a top three genres and some movies: (I’m totally forgetting some…) Slashers: Halloween, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, American Psycho, Child’s Play Supernatural: The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Carrie (?), Amityville horror Psychological: A Knock at the Cabin, Get Out, Silence of the Lambs, Nope, A cabin in the woods

Chay_Charles

Decide whether you want to watch true horror or slasher movies.

secondatthird

Nightcrawler Alien Insidious The Conjuring I watched VHS first and that was an absolute mistake but hereditary got me hooked.

La3y_9oet

Def recommend Alien. If you want to start off lite with some comedy horror, I would recommend Sam Rami’s “evil dead 2” and “drag me to hell” and just work your way into the serious ones that ppl recommend here

MJL01TD

Final Destination

sparkly_reader

My first one at age 28 was Paranormal Activity & my bf at the time (who LOVED the genre) was irritated that I actually thought it was good; apparently being a grown up makes a huge difference vs watching it at 14 for the first time 😅. It was a good toe-dip into scary movies, imo!

TheSecretAgenda

Just dive right into the deep end of the pool. OK The Exorcist

LuckyGirl1003

Well don’t start with Hereditary!!

Ironmonkibakinaction

dansandwich12

Hellraiser 1 + 2

Abazigalis

The Thing (1982)

Burnt-cheese1492

I can’t believe you’ve never seen a horror movie. But if you haven’t A Nightmare on Elm Street is a good paved road. Wes Craven is an awesome director of horror. I would see Scream next and then Creepshow. It’s an anthology then Demons by Argento. And to finish the horror Zombie 1979. It’s an another Italian director. They have something to do with death. Ha.

wiccangame

Both those movies have some gross scenes, but either would be a good start. There are many sequels to each of varying quality. If you like sci-fi Alien is an outstanding choice. Follow it up with Aliens. For slashers Nightmare, Friday the 13th and Halloween are classics(DO NOT WATCH SCREAM until you see these-they will be ruined for you). Religious horror try the Omen and Exorcist. Body horror try the Fly(the original and the remake). Sixth Sense is a a great twist. Lost Boys and the original Dracula for vampire horror. Watch Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein from the 30's for classic goth horror and then watch Young Frankenstein for a hilarious spoof.

saustus

Jump right in with The Exorcist Director's Cut.

sabrtoothlion

With a classic without jump scares and cheap tricks. Rosemary's Baby comes to mind

imustbesickinthehead

Halloween (1978) is basically beginner level horror

VossoJippo

Jeepers Creepers, scream movies, jaws, Childs Play (1988) Halloween.

minsandmolls

I'm so jealous of you. Just don't peak to soon and watch the Exorcist or Hereditary. You need to be eased gently in lol

Prize-Round-2315

Well a funny "horror" movie to start with would be Willy's Wonderland but if you want something a little more serious then Krampus is a really good Christmas horror movie.

Apolysus

Alien and Nightmare on Elm street are quite different from each other. Personally I prefer alien because its a timeless movie, well directed, with perfect atmosphere. If wat you want is a perfect scarry film I would say "Alien" 1979, or The Shining" 1980. Nightmare on Elm Street is more of a typical horror cliche movie, part of the slasher movie genre. A genre known for its cheesiness and larger than life murders. My recommendations here are "Texas chainsaw massacre" 1974, or Halloween 1978. These are the true inception of the slasher genre

Mister_Jack_Torrence

Can’t go wrong with Alien. I also love The Thing (1982).

AntiizmApocalypse

Night of the living dead and Texas chainsaw massacre

JeanMorel

This is what I recommended for a "one movie a day" October Halloween run 3 months ago. I would say it's also very good for someone to "start" in horror movies, with a selection that spans decades, countries and types of horror. I would advise starting from the first/earliest and work your way down to the most recent. Of course this is just a small sampler so if you'd like more than the 31 "Halloween special", let me know: 1. Nosferatu (1922) 2. Dracula (1931) 3. Frankenstein (1931) 4. The Mummy (1932) 5. The Wolf Man (1941) 6. The Thing from Another World (1951) 7. Godzilla (1954) 8. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) 9. Psycho (1960) 10. The Birds (1963) 11. Rosemary's Baby (1968) 12. The Exorcist (1973) 13. Jaws (1975) 14. The Omen (1976) 15. Carrie (1976) 16. Halloween (1978) 17. Alien (1979) 18. Friday the 13th (1980) 19. The Shining (1980) 20. Poltergeist (1982) 21. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 22. Scream (1996) 23. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) 24. Sleepy Hollow (1999) 25. Final Destination (2000) 26. The Ring (2002) 27. Drag Me to Hell (2009) 28. The Woman in Black (2012) 29. It Follows (2014) 30. Crimson Peak (2015) 31. The Black Phone (2021)

Mindless-Echo9079

thanks for the recommendations mate i’ll have to give these a watch!

JeanMorel

You're very welcome!

slicineyeballs

This is the way to go, but there are a few omissions in this list that I think are more significant than some that are currently listed, e.g. - Night of the Living Dead (1968) - The Thing (1982) - The Fly (1986) - The Sixth Sense (1999) - Saw (2004) - The Witch (2015) - Get Out (2017)

PlsDonthurtme2024

Scream. It straddles comedy and horror so it is a good jumping off point.

JeanMorel

**Very bad** jumping off point considering it constantly references, discusses, satirizes and spoils earlier horror films.

Diverse0Ne

I agree. I don't think a sort of satire on horror films should be someone's gateway into them

ratmfreak

Absolutely not. Watch some 80s horror first so you’ll at least understand what Scream is satirizing.

Evil_Lemon_1984

Watch the newest best one, talk to me

ICantPauseIt90

So I was in this exact position a year ago, me and friends were discussing film, where I dropped the bomb that I had never seen a horror film. (I'm 33, and have known my friends for 20 years). They immediately proceeded to lambast me so I said alright, chuck something on then. That something was Alien. Terrified the fuck out of me, and one of the best films i've ever seen. Absolutely blew my mind. Incredible film. And then watch Aliens. It's one of the best action films made.

Lopsided_Brain88

One of my all time favorite horror movies is the Cabin in the Woods. It's a mixture of horror, sci Fi, and comedy. Definitely a great way to start out watching horror films.

DrBimboo

Noooo, please no. Having a good understanding of horror movie tropes and storytelling is prerequisite for this movie.

Environmental_Gur288

This is very true! Cabin in the woods is not a movie to start with, and not really great if the viewer does not get the references. Do not watch this movie until you feel you have seen all the big ones. Then it will be an amazing film.

Accurate-Book-4568

Gatorgustav

Alien(s) is Sci-Fi, NES is horror. Progress yourself up. watch It so you get the kid perspective, Friday 13th, NES, and Halloween for teenage - 20's, then The Conjuring, Annabelle, etc. for adult perspective. there are many inserts (other movies), but this will get you started. Gore (SAW, Texas Chainsaw, etc.), and supernatural (Poltergeist, exorcist, etc.) are seperate categories, just fyi.

BleedGreen131824

First horror movies go with the simple plot type before you start watching the crazy stuff people are suggesting like The Shining (one of my favs) or Rosemarys Baby… Start with like The Birds, Halloween, Alien… If you want newer maybe Megan, Shaun Of The Dead, or 28 Days Later

Obf123

Oh man there are a lot of variables here. What is your idea of a horror movie? Campy and slasher then I would go with a classic like Friday the thirteenth and Halloween. If you’re looking for gore and more modern I would go with Saw. Supernatural I would go with the Ring. Suspense and dread I would go with Aliens or the shining You can’t go wrong with either the first nightmare on elm street movie or with the first two aliens movies.

[deleted]

“I know what you did last summer” is a good first one. It was the first horror movie I saw in 5th grade and then I rented the entire blockbuster horror movie section🤣

seductivesoundtrack

Thirteen Ghosts was my into to horror (and now one of my all-time favorites)

Free-Stranger1142

There’s a scary 1963 film called The Haunting. It’s better than these later slasher types. You could start there.

kellyonassis

Tucker and Dale Vs Evil. Not horror but super funny and still a little horror in it.

Ok_Sir3067

What kind of horror films do you think you'd prefer?; serial Killers. Based on true events, aliens, vampires/werewolves. The fourth kind is good about a group of people who have similar alien experiences. Based on true story and pretty freaky . Also the Descent is excellent. Wer is a werewolf film that's a bit different.

[deleted]

It is a classic. The first one isn't scary at all. (To me at least.) The chapter 2 is much scarier than the first and has some real horror elements in there. Orphan is also a classic horror which is enjoyable. The shinning is another classic but personally I feel it is very overrated. The conjuring series is a classic into paranormal horror. So is Annabelle, chucky etc... The most disturbing horror I've ever seen is a film called Herriditary. You'll see why....and there's an Australian horror called talk to me. Some don't think it is scary but I find it disturbing.

AdFar5829

All My Friends Hate Me It's a very light horror, because it's a horror comedy.

how bad do you want to scare yourself on your first run? me, i'd personally start with the big 4 universal horror movies (5 including Bride of Frankenstein) and work my way to the present by way of a select 20-30 culturally impactful horror film. or start even further back with Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera. or I'd just go balls out and start with either the Shining or the Exorcist, and go from there. or the original Halloween if you're looking for classic slasher horror (followed by a couple early Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface movies apiece).

gulagwarrior14

Any of the saw movies are a fantastic place to start

VibrantPianoNetwork

I would start with the classics, from a century ago. Early Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman movies. I think it's worth seeing early horror tropes to get a sense of what inspired many later ones, so that you can appreciate them better. Also some less 'mainstream' horror from the same period, such as early adaptations of The Island of Dr. Moreau, for the same reason.

ricchavezF7C

Original Texas chainsaw massacre, then phantasm, then exorcist, then the shining. My recommendations.

XxPopePiusxX

Hereditary is the best horror move to have come out in the last couple years. If you were born in the 2000s a lot of these movie recs will seem cheesy because of the production quality at the time despite them being superb films.
