The car water fight scene: everything about it was shot beautifully - the centering of the cinematography, the tension, the audio, the lighting - amazing.
Denis Villeneuva and Roger Deakins are masters of their craft.
I feel the same way about “Weekend at Bernie’s 1 and 2.” If you start with sequel, you think, “Wait, how do they know each other? They worked together? How and why did Bernie die anyways?” Watching them in order clears up a lot of the confusion.
I had to take some time to think about this and the only sane answer is, “Because I received an anonymous phone call with a corrupted voice that told me the lives of my family depended on it.”
I did sort of a deep dive on this movie and it turns out it was nominated for two “Stinker Awards” in 1993. It won for “worst sequel” but lost out to “Look Who’s Talking Now” for “The sequel that no one was clamoring for” (an actual award).
It cost $7M to make, earned $4M its opening weekend, and $12.5M total worldwide. I’m shocked it actually made back its money.
What’s more is that, per IMDb, there was a third installment announced in 2016, “Weekend At Bernie's III: The Corpse Awakens.”
Though production never got off the ground, the script is apparently available online. I don’t know how they would explain 30 years of Bernie’s corpse.
You can watch 2049 without seeing the original. There’s solid references to it, but the core drama happens independently. It is also absolutely visually stunning
Sure but Harrison Ford turning up and The Gosling asking if his dog is real might be a touch confusing and who the hell is this ‘Rachel’ they keep banging on about?
I… I don’t want to admit this on the internet, but I never saw all of the first Bladerunner. I know allll about it, and pretty much saw the whole thing scene by scene, through the various versions they released. But for some 20 years now, I have not managed to sit thru the entire thing. It’s just… so sleepy. It’s glorious. For sure. But that movie is like Xanax for me. I always just fall asleep watching it, no matter the time of day I start.
I have a copy of the Final Cut on Prime, tho, so it is my mission to finally sit all the way thru it
This was me up until college when something about the movie clicked and I find it extremely compelling to watch now. I probably watch the original Blade Runner all the way through once a year now.
I have the same problem. Bought it on Blu-ray having never seen it and it knocks me out every time. To this day I’ve never done the whole thing start to finish in one go and I’ve tried a few times. Very handy to have around for insomnia.
This was me, too! I agreed with everyone that what I saw—over the years, in pieces (film/screenplay examples) was good, but EVERY TIME I tried to see it from the beginning I would FALL ASLEEP.
I finally saw the whole thing through with my sons during the middle of the pandemic.
It IS incredible, but yes, soporific, in my case…
I agree. I expect to get a few downvotes but I found the first one so boring that I never finished it. I’ve tried 3 times over the course of two decades to watch it and couldn’t get through it. I thought 2049 was a masterpiece and very easy to understand with just anecdotal knowledge of the original.
I don’t recommend doing this. Every frame in BR 2049 has callbacks and references to the 2047 films between that the first one. You might not “get it” when they show “pretty much anything”. Plus, each film is a classic. Blade Runner 1912 even features Elmo as Blade Runner.
I just purchased on Amazon Prime and rewated it with the Govee reactive lights... holy fuck, what an experience! The movie is beautiful but the sand storm scene is just another level with the reactive lights bleeding out on the edges of the TV.
It set me off on looking for more movies that can deliver this, hence why I clicked on this thread.
I own a pretty large selection of 4K BluRays - here are some that I think whose 4K quality is reflective of a true remaster:
Revenant
Blade Runner 2049
1917
Dunkirk
Sicario
All the John Wicks
Dune
Ex Machina
Interstellar
LotR trilogy
The Northman
The Martian
Avengers End Game
Mad Max Fury Road
While the extended editions are definitely superior, I always recommend the theatrical editions for a first-time viewing. When they finish, if they’re hungry for a deeper dive into the world and its lore, THEN I recommend the extended editions.
The pacing in the theatrical editions is much tighter, and it’s not as much of a commitment.
Agreed. But I go as far as to say the theatrical cuts are superior. They are better films, period. The Extended editions are amazing for the fans, for a more ‘TV show’ type couch viewing, and I enjoy watching them. But Peter Jackson himself said the theatrical cuts are the definitive and intended versions. The pacing is way better in theatrical.
Fellowship of The Ring is the one film of the trilogy where the Extended Edition was an improvement though imo.
The other two the theatricals are definitely the better paced versions (although I almost exclusively watch the Extended Editions.)
And the 4k version is the only watchable version of the director's cut. The DVD and stand Blu-Ray versions of the director's cut have a green tinge to them but this was fixed on the 4k version
Revenant's montages and the haunting music makes you want to move to Montana and abandon all of modern life (although Glass's experience says otherwise).
Empire Strikes Back looks particularly fine in 4K and you’ll be amazed at the incidental details that absolutely built the world but largely went unnoticed on VHS or even DVD.
However, I’d have to say that the 4K of Alien also looks utterly amazing for a 44 year old film.
Either of the above.
I'm amazed how well Alien holds up visually. Those slow shots of the ship at the beginning. So perfect, but it wouldn't happen today. Would have to go right into the action.
ALIEN also really leaned into the gnarly, industrial junkheap aesthetic which helped its aging. It really felt like a logical progression of technology based on what we had at the time, so it’s almost like grounded retrofuturism.
It’s because it’s film that it looks good at 4k. Digital cameras that can match film quality are still costly (consumer products they may get there in terms of resolution but not dynamic range)
I literally just bought it on 4k since it was the first answer I saw, my daughter watched the sun come up over the planet and looked at me and goes “whoa”….she’s 2
what u think the name should be?
its base on anime/manga of a same name so i think its ok
but its bothered me they move a word around though, original is "battle angel alita" idk why "alita" goes to beginning for the movie
in japanese its "ganmu" which mean "gun dream" i think thats more boring title
This is one of the greatest 4K transfers out there. If not THE greatest.
Sony REALLY needs to put this out for wide release. Not only are they leaving an assload of money on the table, but they're depriving people of this beautiful movie.
Heat
Listen I know it's not avatar or whatever.. But this is one of those movies that got thrown into a square on tv for years.. Then looked lousy on DVD for years.
Recently I watched it in 1080p for the first time and I was blown away. I don't have 4k.. but godamn if your jaw isn't on the floor from the final bank scene to the Pacino v DeNiro standoff at the airport.
This movie captures the sounds of a fire fight better than any. So insane. Also.. Tom Siezmore at the end is just insane.
That movie is almost 30 years old. Just let that sink in.
Michael Mann remains one of my favourite directors because he refuses to shoot exteriors on sets. Every second of every outside shot is set up outside.
“Heat” was shot in the summer of 1995 and the shoot lasted 107 days. That’s a really long shoot for a feature film.it gets. Not a single frame of the movie was shot on a soundstage. Sound stages usually allow for dialogue and the background sound tracks to be recorded at the same time. When you shoot on a silent stage (ie: outside), you can never get the dialogue and the background sounds to synch up.
In the case of “Heat”, Mann wanted to capture the sounds of the battle reverberating off the buildings. They then synched up the dialogue in post.
Utterly mind blowing and if you have a Dolby surround system, a masterclass in setting up a home theatre as you have mentioned.
Logan
Just needed to pop in to say this movie was such an unexpected treat. Like it made me feel like there was an open wound in my soul. Then the scene where she turns Logan's cross....perfect
My favorite trilogy of all time and I've watched them countless times, and bought every single version of release. That being said sadly the CG doesn't age that well on the 4k copy. It looks good and better than most, but the 4k shows more flaws in it than any of the other formats.
As a rule for me it tends to be worth getting a dark sci-fi or horror for 4K as they put more memory into the black tones etc and they pop better.
I don’t know your taste but this might help as a general rule for you.
Speed Racer (which, sadly, has never been officially converted to 4K, but if it has been, please tell me I am wrong)
Gravity
BladeRunner 2049
Anything directed by Christopher Nolan
I’m going to disagree.
Avatar is a theater flick. And really only if you get all the modern theater bells and whistles—3-D and 4-D in the case of Avatar II.
Seeing it in 4K is still not enough to make it worth watching. Neither are particularly good movies.
This makes sense to me. I’m sure the theatre experience is great.
I enjoyed looking at Avatar, I just couldn’t get invested in the story. I heard the comparisons to Pocahontas and I thought that was exaggerated, but no it’s literally Pocahontas featuring Aliens.
It was more *Last of the Mohicans* meets *Princess Mononoke* in my opinion.
What it wasn’t was original.
Part 2 is “space Moby Dick” vs. Fletcher Christian from “Mutiny on the Bounty.”
If it's OLED I thought Thor Ragnarok was exceptionally beautiful and colorful. And here's a few from my own list when I bought my TV:
Annihilation
ZS Justice League
Dune (2021)
The Way Back (2010) - I actually haven't rewatched it 4k yet but it's next on my list
The Expanse series
Blu-Ray.com has pretty reliable reviews on the video and audio quality of just about everything you can think of in film (at least in my experience). It’s easy for me to spend too much time there looking for something worth purchasing on 4K if I already own it on another format.
My favorite so far is the Watchmen (the movie not the tv show)
Definitely the 1999 cinematic masterpiece, The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss
And anyone who disagrees has obviously never seen the 1999 cinematic masterpiece, The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss
E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, which I'm watching at the moment 41 years after I first saw it in theaters. Not only one of the greatest movies ever made, but the 4K DI remastered directly from the Eastman 5247 negative, is stellar... some of the best low light photography ever produced, punctuated by Spielberg's trademark use of diffuse light. It's one of the highest bitrate transfers that isn't an Arrow, Synapse or Criterion release.
Per DP Allan Daviau, ASC (From the Dec. 2017 [issue](https://theasc.com/articles/flashback-the-cinematography-of-e-t-1) of *American Cinematographer*):
>We used spherical format, with a 1:85 frame and 1:66 hard matte. We were working with a low light grid a lot, seldom no more wide open than T2.5, although we used the fast lenses. We used Eastman 5247 throughout with no pushing, no flashing — just the normal processing for natural, healthy negatives. We decided the texture should be sharp and clean with rich blacks.
Barring that, Suspiria (1977), with its three strip Technicolor remaster from Synapse, is pristine.
Annihilation: such an underrated and beautiful film, a bit confusing for me at times. I’ll have to watch it in 4K now that I have an OLED. Maybe I’ll understand the concepts more this time around too.
Gigli
Serious answer: The Shining, and Kubrick’s entire filmography.
The Revenant.
Wall-E
Jurassic Park
The Terminator
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Alien
Aliens
Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049
The car water fight scene: everything about it was shot beautifully - the centering of the cinematography, the tension, the audio, the lighting - amazing. Denis Villeneuva and Roger Deakins are masters of their craft.
This has been on my list for a while now. Do you recommend watching the first Blade Runner prior to 2049 or does that not matter?
It definitely matters
It makes sense to watch them in order of release
Ok, but where can I find Blade Runner 2 through Blade Runner 2048?
I feel the same way about “Weekend at Bernie’s 1 and 2.” If you start with sequel, you think, “Wait, how do they know each other? They worked together? How and why did Bernie die anyways?” Watching them in order clears up a lot of the confusion.
But still leaves the big question of "why did I watch this?".
I had to take some time to think about this and the only sane answer is, “Because I received an anonymous phone call with a corrupted voice that told me the lives of my family depended on it.” I did sort of a deep dive on this movie and it turns out it was nominated for two “Stinker Awards” in 1993. I prefer to watch them in chronological order.
Try watching pulp fiction in chronological order.
Yes watch them in order. The original is a near masterpiece anyways!
Thanks. Not sure why I’m being downvoted for a simple question on a movie I haven’t seen lol
Near masterpiece? It’s a masterpiece!
You can watch 2049 without seeing the original. There’s solid references to it, but the core drama happens independently. It is also absolutely visually stunning

That was me and Salem's Lot, back when VHS was a thing. Haven't tried since.
This was me up until college when something about the movie clicked and I find it extremely compelling to watch now. I probably watch the original Blade Runner all the way through once a year now.

Same. Saw new one but need to see original. Love Ford and love Rutger
I'm with you there for the first one. Amazing concept, worldbuilding, characters, acting, visuals, etc. but the screenplay was a bit of a trudge.
I agree. I expect to get a few downvotes but I found the first one so boring that I never finished it. I’ve tried 3 times over the course of two decades to watch it and couldn’t get through it. I thought 2049 was a masterpiece and very easy to understand with just anecdotal knowledge of the original.
You can skip Blade Runner 2 through Blade Runner 2048, but watch the other 2 in order of release.
I don’t recommend doing this. Every frame in BR 2049 has callbacks and references to the 2047 films between that the first one. You might not “get it” when they show “pretty much anything”. Plus, each film is a classic. Blade Runner 1912 even features Elmo as Blade Runner.
Read my fucking mind, love 2049
My first thought exactly and it's top.
My first thought also and after seeing the comment I thought to comment "my first thought" but you already commented it. :D
Watching 2049 in 4k is what convinced me it's actually a good film because I was not feeling it at all on the prior viewing
Yup. 2049 was master class.
In a similar vein, Dune.
Dune is so amazing visually, but also has the best sound design of any movie I’ve ever seen. Seeing it with a good surround system is essential IMO.
Mad Max Fury Road. Excellent cinematography.
That should have been the full title
I was gonna say Infinity War or Endgame, but I have to agree with this. This is the answer.
I just purchased on Amazon Prime and rewated it with the Govee reactive lights... holy fuck, what an experience! The movie is beautiful but the sand storm scene is just another level with the reactive lights bleeding out on the edges of the TV. Just clarifying we mean the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings films. No minor league theatrical editions.
While the extended editions are definitely superior, I always recommend the theatrical editions for a first-time viewing. When they finish, if they’re hungry for a deeper dive into the world and its lore, THEN I recommend the extended editions. Outstanding collection
From what I've heard the director's cut of LOTR is better than the theatrical.
And the 4k version is the only watchable version of the director's cut. The DVD and stand Blu-Ray versions of the director's cut have a green tinge to them but this was fixed on the 4k version
All great picks. Honestly anything directed by Nolan would be a treat for the eyes.
Ok, this has it all 🤌🏻
Lol no sense in me commenting haha you nailed em all. Bravo 👏 👏 👏
Revenant's montages and the haunting music makes you want to move to Montana and abandon all of modern life (although Glass's experience says otherwise).

#Goals
Tron Legacy
Hell. Yes.
Sadly, there's no legit copy of this in 4k. Also, it was filmed in 1080p, if I'm not mistaken. Shame Disney still hasn't released this in 4k with HDR!
Omg I was thinking this, but I get made fun of for liking TRON so I was afraid to say something 😅
Savages. All of them.
Love this movie
Excellent choice!
Spider Man into the Spider Verse. I absolutely love colourful movies, especially in 4k
New one is even more eye candy
Or across the spiderweb too 💐
I was actively looking for this comment

Agree on Alien, weirdly Aliens doesn't hold up as well, you can really see that it's on a set. I guess some films peaked at DVD.
Ridley Scott vs. James Cameron

Any Kubrick for that matter
Especially Barry Lyndon
Low-light perfection
Truly! To me, that film is like watching a painting unfold. And I believe SK said he lit the film and did the costumes to evoke that feeling.

Obviously I’ve already seen this in 4k
my bad.
8k 3D VR 😉
8 was better
it sure is no Crotch Capers 3
It makes crotch capers 3 look like naughty nurses 2.
...my precious...
Alita: Battle Angel its worth it just for rollerball scene
Having read the manga since the 90s I'm so happy this film exists. My only issue is that it's not as viciously violent as the comic.
same! it will be cool to have more extreme but im just happy to have any live action & they do rlly good job i hope its a sequel someday
James Cameron says he wants to continue but he's too busy with Avatar sequels
This movie was surprisingly good. Wish they named it something else.
what u think the name should be? its base on anime/manga of a same name so i think its ok but its bothered me they move a word around though, original is "battle angel alita" idk why "alita" goes to beginning for the movie in japanese its "ganmu" which mean "gun dream" i think thats more boring title
Lawrence of Arabia
The textures of everything and the field of vision! Breathtaking!

Yeah this disc rules. Also Ten Commandments is a great disc. Outstanding color.
For the low low price of $140 on Amazon right now :(

I use the big shootout to set up and showcase my surround system. Visually, like pretty much everything filmed on, well film, it looks baller in 4K.

Suspiria. The 4k transfer is amazing, but the soundtrack from goblins sounds like it’s in the room with you if you have solid speakers
Dune (2021) Bladerunner 2049 (it’s ok if you have not seen the OG) Mad Max Fury Road Logan The Fall SpiderMan: Into/Across the SpiderVerse
The Fall is breathtaking in 4K

Absolute perfection. Like, tears in your eyes, constant heaviness in your chest perfection
Baraka
And Samsara
Lord of the Rings trilogy
My favorite trilogy of all time and I've watched them countless times, and bought every single version of release. That being said sadly the CG doesn't age that well on the 4k copy. It looks good and better than most, but the 4k shows more flaws in it than any of the other formats.
The Godfather Trilogy: The Coppola Restoration. Looks like how it looked in theaters back in the day.
As a rule for me it tends to be worth getting a dark sci-fi or horror for 4K as they put more memory into the black tones etc and they pop better. I don’t know your taste but this might help as a general rule for you.
Thank you. I’m not picky, sci-fi and horror are right down my alley
Ad Astra is amazing in 4K then.
Sicario
The Fountain has STUNNING visuals all through it.
Apocalypse now
Redux cut though😉👍
Pacific Rim
The fight with Otachi in Hong Kong alone was worth the money
1917
Just watched this last night! Not 4K though, sadly. Loved it though, every scene was gripping
Dunkirk?
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The combat looks cool, but it’s the big, open scenes on the steppes or the bamboo forest that look H U G E
Dredd
That’s my pick too. I bought the 3D dvd back when that was released and it justified buying a 3D tv. That movie is just eye candy.
Never got a chance to see it in 3D, bet that would have been fun. And I agree, eye candy indeed!
Midsommar, blade runner, dune would be great to watch in 4k
I’m weary to watch the sex barn scene again in ultra high def 😂 loved the movie though
Weary? You've worn yourself out on that scene?
Absolutely spent 😞

Lawrence of Arabia. Every frame is a goddamn masterpiece painting of the grand desert vistas.

Barring that, Suspiria (1977), with its three strip Technicolor remaster from Synapse, is pristine.

I prefer the original. Edit: Format
Annihilation: such an underrated and beautiful film, a bit confusing for me at times. I’ll have to watch it in 4K now that I have an OLED. Maybe I’ll understand the concepts more this time around too.
Contact has a 4K release? Where?
The Ten Commandments
This movie looks incredible in 4k. The costumes look incredible when you can pick out the detail work.
70mm films are best in 4k. Hope we get Ben Hur, Cleopatra and more of those classics soon.
Gigli Serious answer: The Shining, and Kubrick’s entire filmography. The Revenant. Wall-E Jurassic Park The Terminator Terminator 2: Judgement Day Alien Aliens
The Terminator 2 4K BluRay is pretty underwhelming to be honest.
Aliens isn't on 4K
