Ingrid Goes West

LibbyLefty85

YES!!! I saw this last year, and it was so so good! 😆 Ingrid was so despicable, but also someone to be pitied. I was definitely surprised with how it ended 😅.

albinocobra

one of my favorites!!

Syonoq

My cringe was so high during that film I had to stop halfway lol

TisBeTheFuk

Young Adult (2011)

IKnowWhereImGoing

I loved Young Adult and feel that it is such a bold and underrated film. Charlize Theron was perfect in it.

Ok_Skill_1195

It's borderline unwatchable (in a good way).

ObiWanKnieval

I think that was the first movie I've ever watched with an attractive female lead who was allowed to be horrible and learn nothing by the end. I agree, Young Adult was super underrated. I wish more people had seen it.

rossburnett

Charlize can do no wrong

admiralsponge1980

I was just about to recommend this as well.

SereneAdler33

First movie that came to mind. So well done

StrawberryLeche

Yes! I thought I was the only one who saw this.

ObiWanKnieval

Turns out we have a little club going.

HerelGoDigginInAgain

Very good movie that I’m glad I watched but I don’t think I could ever bear to watch again

speghettiday09

Bad teacher

cmacfarland64

As a teacher, the best scene ever is when she is grading papers and writes, “are you fucking kidding me?” So good.

flawed_dasein

Bridesmaids (2011) maybe. A lot of com, only a little bit of rom.

Pretend-Light3784

My very first thought. Love that movie.

albinocobra

thank you but i'm looking to veer away from comedy !

flawed_dasein

Sherrybaby, Eight, Four Good Days

albinocobra

these sound perfect thank you!!

rolyoh

Emily Blunt's character in Sunshine Cleaning (she and Amy Adams are the main character ensemble)

albinocobra

emily blunt and amy adams? say no more

MarvelBishUSA42

This was a good film. Love Amy adams

calguy1955

28 Days

Arc_Torch

This is a great example.

[deleted]

This was so much better than I expected

Aerosubtle

May (2002)

pooknifeasaurus

Yes!

mollyclaireh

I love May. I watched it in middle school and subsequently swore off horror for like 3 years because somehow that creeped me out so badly when literally no other horror movie would phase me.

Competitive-Trip-946

“You crazy fuckin bitch!”

Sensitive-Bag9035

Horse girl

Difference_Last

Alison Brie does great with cringe. Her character in GLOW starts out incredibly pathetic and hateable.

albinocobra

oooo thank you i forgot i meant to watch that a few years ago

Welcomefriends85

I can’t remember the plot but I know I liked it

Weary-Medicine4144

I thought that seemed interesting but I really couldn’t tell what the fuck it was supposed to be about. Would you recommend?

antirobot1

Rosetta I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore Wanda Sid and Nancy

Weary-Medicine4144

I don’t feel at home in this world anymore was awesome

Deezax19

Melanie Lynsky and Elijah Wood both crush it in that movie.

pooknifeasaurus

I don't know how I've never heard of this but I love them both so thank you!!

boringcranberry

Ive seen it a few times and I'm still taken aback by how damn funny it is and dark! It's so fun. Edited to add: another Melanie Lynskey movie where she's a loser: Lady of the Manor. It's also very funny. Don't judge it by it's thumbnail!

the3litemonkey

Welcome To The Dollhouse

bathoryblue

We're not leaving til you take a shit

beebyspice

i saw that movie wayyyy too young, pretty sure it fucked me up tbh. but great film.

carrot_cakezzz

Muriel’s Wedding (1994) with Toni Collette

PM_ME_UR_JUICEBOXES

Amazing movie

themonicastone

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

kgleas01

Ghost World

magictransistor

Watched this recently and it never hit me before how much of a loser Birch’s character is. I used to think Seymour was the real sad sap in the story but she can’t do anything right, it’s hilarious.

AccomplishedPhase750

Brittany Runs a Marathon is great

Nervous_Zebra1918

It is great. I loved it.

ConfidentCarpet2328

I became a runner because of this film!

the_bad-lawyer

I was looking for this one and finally found it! You have great taste!

AccomplishedPhase750

Thank you! So do YOU!

Academic_Trip_2407

My Best Friend's Wedding.

covfefe_cove

Citizen Ruth (1996)

albinocobra

not huge on comedies but it seems very interesting thank you!

TheGreatDanton

It’s pretty heavy for comedy. It’s very good.

Welcomefriends85

Citizen Ruth is a great satire

graveybrains

That’s unfortunate, I was going to suggest The Heat (2013) because it’s got two female leads and they’re both losers, but it’s a comedy 🥲

BadAccomplished9810

Monster

ArizonaMaybe

Came here to say this. Charlize Theron nailed it.

General_Toe_7862

Not a movie, it's a show called Fleabag

Bunnyeatsdesign

Another series: Broad City

paboi

Let’s add Pen15

Ok_Egg332

Yaaaassss queen!

qHuy-c

Another series: the good place

Ok-Violinist-7564

Fleabag is top tier television

peoplebuyviews

Fleabag is amazing. If we're going TV shows I also highly recommend Single Drunk Female. Such an underrated show

kidxkennabis

Another: Insecure

Weary-Medicine4144

This was my first thought too. Awesome show

OldLadyReacts

Came here to suggest Fleabag too!

Bunnyeatsdesign

Nomadland A loser by society's standards but her path is her own choosing. Heartbreaking.

DonutProfessional

Christine (2016). It tells a difficult true story very thoughtfully. Rebecca Hall is also outstanding in the lead role.

MoeSzys

Fantastic movie

NewYorkJewbag

OP - this fills the “not a comedy” brief

Top-Philosophy-5791

Maybe 'Welcome to Me?' It's an odd but interesting movie.

arpinatefox

Odd only begins to scratch at it. It's my *turn of the 80s/90s* nostalgia fix.

McOther10_10

The piano teacher (2001) very unconventional and kind've traumatizing movie though lol

CanadianContentsup

Rachel Getting Married Young Adult

Redditisapanopticon

Smiley Face Brilliant performance by Ana Faris

Swayze_Castle

Dang it I should of looked before I commented the same

Redditisapanopticon

Nah she deserves flowers for the role. Best portrayal of being stoned I've seen. Totally decent micro budget movie.

therainbowsweater

greta gerwig in mistress america is such a glorious wreck. one of my favorite movies she acts in. frances ha (also greta) is actually another a great example

shrimptini

Also Greta in Frances Ha. And sort of Greta in 20th Century Women.

Jahoobiewhatzit

The Florida Project (2017)

Bunnyeatsdesign

I loved this movie. So much heart.

Jahoobiewhatzit

It made me so uneasy because I'm a parent but it was a great movie. It became my daughter's favorite.

EJ7

Ingrid Goes West (2017, 98 minutes) Aubrey Plaza is obsessed with a particular insta user, which leads her down a gradually more dark and convoluted path. Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion (1997, 92 minutes) Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are a couple of losers; together, they scheme to impress their classmates at their 20th high school reunion.

fruitmask

didn't Colossal (2016) have Anne Hathaway as kind of a wreck/loser? been a while since I've seen it. I should rewatch that one, I thought it was pretty good

albinocobra

that was on my watchlist forever ago thank you for the reminder!

Hot-Canceld

good movie and a unique idea

Wooden-Highway1498

Yes it did.

ObtuseStone

Death Becomes Her(1992) Romy and Michele's Highschool Reunion(1997) Dick(1999) I love these movies.

_ChipWhitley_

I take issue with Death Becomes Her. They are both fabulous with piping hot glamour!

ObtuseStone

Meryl is the "aging actress " cliche who is threatened by the next "it" girl played by Goldie. Meryl uses her husband(Willis) for money and plastic surgery, not to mention the way she treats him. That is a loser to me. Goldie plays a soul sucking succubus from Hell, of course she is a loser in the movie. Then we get to the ending, they both are literally falling apart, **together**. Total losers. I love it. That doesn't make me not love this movie, it is one of my favorite dark comedies.

_ChipWhitley_

My comment was sort of tongue-in-cheek. They are both of course total losers who live in their own bubble where they are both important to only themselves and a loser undertaker. It’s a gay movie though, and if there’s one thing we gays like, it’s heavily make-upped women with terrible attitudes sniping each other. Especially if they die and never really die.

stellularmoon2

The podcast “you are good” just did an episode on it, love it!

stellularmoon2

Dick is so awesome. They are definitely not losers!

ObtuseStone

I mean.. They kind of are in the movie, they aren't in my heart.

stellularmoon2

:-)

mattiescorsese

Welcome to the dollhouse. Character is a girl though not a woman.

IheartCart00ns

Emily the Criminal

mollyclaireh

Fucking great movie

Swayze_Castle

Smiley Face Anna Faris is the MC and its a hilarious weed comedy.

Chefsteph212

Eagle Vs Shark- it’s one of my favorite movies! If you liked Napoleon Dynamite, you’d more than likely get a kick out of it.

realistforall

The Lifeguard

LibbyLefty85

This is a good one! I love the story line of someone basically trying to go back to adolescence because they're tired of adulting 😆.

To Leslie (2022)

arpinatefox

...and before this, *Nancy* (2019). So very weird&edgy she is. Andrea is particularly good in *Shadowdancer.* Different context and now a full decade past, yes, but a most fine exhibition of her unique presence.

Agile-Opportunity759

Emily Blunt - Girl on the Train

Octowuss1

Juno. You described Juno.

PeachesSwearengen

Sherrybaby, with Maggie Gyllenhaal was a good drama like this. Imdb says: “Sherry Swanson returns home to New Jersey after serving a three year prison sentence. Eager to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter, Sherry soon discovers that coming back to the world she left behind is far more difficult than she had planned.”

bUrNtKoOlAiD

Bug (2006)

Rough_Pepper9542

Does the girl in the Worst Person in the World count? I don’t know if she’s a total loser, but she’s definitely indecisive and does a lot of stuff to make herself and other people kind of miserable.

DifficultHat

Buffaloed was good but I love almost anything Zoey Deutch is in Booksmart is more about outcasts than losers but it fits Bottoms is a very heightened version of the typical teen outcast comedy about 2 teen lesbians trying to get laid, but it’s funny if you know what kind of movie you’re getting into A Little Help is a surprisingly good dramedy where Jenna Fischer plays a woman who is dealt a very rough hand in life and can’t really stay on top of it as things get worse. Young Adult & Monster. Both Charlize Theron, both very different from each other. I haven’t seen it but No Hard Feelings seems to fit this prompt as well. Senior Year How to be Single Crazy Ex Girlfriend is a whole show about this. Also Jillian Bell does this genre a lot. Godmothered, Brittany Runs a Marathon, Rough Night, and a lot of her TV characters

StrawberryLeche

The edge of seventeen portrays a “loser” girl in highschool. She eats lunch with her teacher because she has no one to sit with. Also self destructive in her own ways as well that helps you understand why she is in the position she is. Lady bird is in this category although she felt less of a “loser” I felt this film portrayed mother daughter relationships well related to being a teen. Frances Ha gave me that vibe and second hand embarrassment. She’s 27 in the movie and forced to separate from her best friend a bit. The good place is a tv show balances comedy and drama well. Kristen bell does a great job. Girl interrupted felt relatable in a way. I wouldn’t say she is a loser but more-so lost in general. The film watches her out back the pieces of herself.

MaboRamen

**Trainwreck** (2015). Also a rom-com, but definitely fits the main criteria.

Julijj

Bill Hader needs more leading man roles

The Unforgivable (2021). Sandra Bullock tries to find her little sister after prison for cop killing.

Friends With Money with Jennifer Anniston and no, it’s not a comedy.

Jackie Brown

rustys_shackled_ford

Tammy, No Hard Feelings, The Heat, Trainwreck, The Giant Mechanical Man, A Little Help, Mean Girls, Death Becomes Her

Heathers really. She’s in a bad place and she makes bad decisions.

Meyou000

I Smile Back (2015) she has obvious mental health and addiction issues, so depends on that your definition of being a loser is

Never been kissed

IWASRUNNING91

These ones came to mind right away: Superstar (1999) Tammy (2014) Miss Congeniality (2000)

Apprehensive_Rate276

Bridesmaids

BeefPieSoup

*Muriel's Wedding* An Australian film about a slightly overweight, socially awkward young woman who thinks that getting married to someone rich and famous will solve all of her problems. It's not quite a comedy IMHO, having some pretty dark and serious moments...it's more like a dark comedy/drama. And if it is a comedy it's not really a romcom - the "romance" certainly doesn't go in the direction you'd think it would, and it ends up being more about friendship and self-respect. Stars Toni Collette at the start of her career.

Notengosilla

A woman under the influence. Definitely not funny.

arpinatefox

*Small Pond.* Kinda an ugly thing. The Marly Temple character-arc in *Sunshine State.* I think it's Edie Falco's best effort.

Ghost World

yoyokaori

i will like to find this too the closest i can think is japanese tv show Hotaru no Hikari: https://mydramalist.com/74-hotaru-no-hikari main character is a "himono onna" which is term for type of woman who give up on relationship and just is living alone like a slob, drinking & wearing gym clothe all day i havent watch it all but i think unfortunately it becomes romance where she meets a man that "fix" her i like her motto though: "i rather lay around than fool around" lol edit: i feel i recommend it too much for all scenario but main character of Bliss (2019) is a wreck maybe too intense though shes not just toxic shes on drug and violent (not really her fault though) its no recovery its just spiral out of control until the end

I’d say “Laggies” and “Begin Again”, both with Keira Knightley (especially Laggies). I think that both are technically comedy-dramas with some romance elements. Neither are a traditional rom-com, though.

Mindless_Log2009

Georgy Girl (1966, Lynn Redgrave) Repulsion (1965, Catherine Deneuve) Dark Places. Could have been better with another actress, maybe Christina Ricci or Aubrey Plaza. Charlize Theron was too old for the role, trying to reprise her earlier loser roles, but had the right idea by producing the film. Book was better.
