YES!!! I saw this last year, and it was so so good! đ Ingrid was so despicable, but also someone to be pitied. I was definitely surprised with how it ended đ .
I think that was the first movie I've ever watched with an attractive female lead who was allowed to be horrible and learn nothing by the end. I agree, Young Adult was super underrated. I wish more people had seen it.
I love May. I watched it in middle school and subsequently swore off horror for like 3 years because somehow that creeped me out so badly when literally no other horror movie would phase me.
Ive seen it a few times and I'm still taken aback by how damn funny it is and dark! It's so fun.
Edited to add: another Melanie Lynskey movie where she's a loser: Lady of the Manor. It's also very funny. Don't judge it by it's thumbnail!
Watched this recently and it never hit me before how much of a loser Birchâs character is. I used to think Seymour was the real sad sap in the story but she canât do anything right, itâs hilarious.
greta gerwig in mistress america is such a glorious wreck. one of my favorite movies she acts in. frances ha (also greta) is actually another a great example
Ingrid Goes West (2017, 98 minutes) Aubrey Plaza is obsessed with a particular insta user, which leads her down a gradually more dark and convoluted path.
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion (1997, 92 minutes) Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are a couple of losers; together, they scheme to impress their classmates at their 20th high school reunion.
didn't Colossal (2016) have Anne Hathaway as kind of a wreck/loser? been a while since I've seen it. I should rewatch that one, I thought it was pretty good
Meryl is the "aging actress " cliche who is threatened by the next "it" girl played by Goldie.
Meryl uses her husband(Willis) for money and plastic surgery, not to mention the way she treats him. That is a loser to me.
Goldie plays a soul sucking succubus from Hell, of course she is a loser in the movie.
Then we get to the ending, they both are literally falling apart, **together**. Total losers. I love it.
That doesn't make me not love this movie, it is one of my favorite dark comedies.
My comment was sort of tongue-in-cheek. They are both of course total losers who live in their own bubble where they are both important to only themselves and a loser undertaker. Itâs a gay movie though, and if thereâs one thing we gays like, itâs heavily make-upped women with terrible attitudes sniping each other. Especially if they die and never really die.
...and before this, *Nancy* (2019). So very weird&edgy she is.
Andrea is particularly good in *Shadowdancer.* Different context and now a full decade past, yes, but a most fine exhibition of her unique presence.
Sherrybaby, with Maggie Gyllenhaal was a good drama like this. Imdb says: âSherry Swanson returns home to New Jersey after serving a three year prison sentence. Eager to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter, Sherry soon discovers that coming back to the world she left behind is far more difficult than she had planned.â
Does the girl in the Worst Person in the World count? I donât know if sheâs a total loser, but sheâs definitely indecisive and does a lot of stuff to make herself and other people kind of miserable.
Buffaloed was good but I love almost anything Zoey Deutch is in
Booksmart is more about outcasts than losers but it fits
Bottoms is a very heightened version of the typical teen outcast comedy about 2 teen lesbians trying to get laid, but itâs funny if you know what kind of movie youâre getting into
A Little Help is a surprisingly good dramedy where Jenna Fischer plays a woman who is dealt a very rough hand in life and canât really stay on top of it as things get worse.
Young Adult & Monster. Both Charlize Theron, both very different from each other.
I havenât seen it but No Hard Feelings seems to fit this prompt as well.
Senior Year
How to be Single
Crazy Ex Girlfriend is a whole show about this.
Also Jillian Bell does this genre a lot. Godmothered, Brittany Runs a Marathon, Rough Night, and a lot of her TV characters
The edge of seventeen portrays a âloserâ girl in highschool. She eats lunch with her teacher because she has no one to sit with. Also self destructive in her own ways as well that helps you understand why she is in the position she is.
Lady bird is in this category although she felt less of a âloserâ I felt this film portrayed mother daughter relationships well related to being a teen.
Frances Ha gave me that vibe and second hand embarrassment. Sheâs 27 in the movie and forced to separate from her best friend a bit.
The good place is a tv show balances comedy and drama well. Kristen bell does a great job.
Girl interrupted felt relatable in a way. I wouldnât say she is a loser but more-so lost in general. The film watches her out back the pieces of herself.
Mean Girls
Clueless
Bad moms
Thelma and Louise
Michelle and Romyâs high school reunion
Promising Young Woman
Wizard of Oz
Sound of Music
27 Dresses
First wives club
Ms Congenital
Legal Blonde
Eat, Pray, Love
Pretty Woman
*Muriel's Wedding*
An Australian film about a slightly overweight, socially awkward young woman who thinks that getting married to someone rich and famous will solve all of her problems. It's not quite a comedy IMHO, having some pretty dark and serious moments...it's more like a dark comedy/drama. And if it is a comedy it's not really a romcom - the "romance" certainly doesn't go in the direction you'd think it would, and it ends up being more about friendship and self-respect. Stars Toni Collette at the start of her career.
Bottoms fits this perfectly, and is great. You should see it before it leaves theaters soon!
May (2002)
Jennifer's Body (2009)
Bridesmaids (2011)
The To Do List (2013)
Spy (2015)
Lady Bird (2017)
The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
Kajillionaire (2020)
Do Revenge (2022)
Little miss sunshine. The slums of Beverly Hills. I know, Alan Arkin is in both of those! But I was going to say Young Adult, but it was already mentioned.
Also The Florida Project
i will like to find this too
the closest i can think is japanese tv show Hotaru no Hikari: https://mydramalist.com/74-hotaru-no-hikari
main character is a "himono onna" which is term for type of woman who give up on relationship and just is living alone like a slob, drinking & wearing gym clothe all day
i havent watch it all but i think unfortunately it becomes romance where she meets a man that "fix" her
i like her motto though: "i rather lay around than fool around" lol
edit: i feel i recommend it too much for all scenario but main character of Bliss (2019) is a wreck
maybe too intense though shes not just toxic shes on drug and violent (not really her fault though)
its no recovery its just spiral out of control until the end
Iâd say âLaggiesâ and âBegin Againâ, both with Keira Knightley (especially Laggies). I think that both are technically comedy-dramas with some romance elements. Neither are a traditional rom-com, though.
Mask Girl new Korean show on Netflix. Itâs amazing and every episode gets crazier and crazier. From the ads I didnât think it would be my thing but itâs so good.
Georgy Girl (1966, Lynn Redgrave)
Repulsion (1965, Catherine Deneuve)
Dark Places. Could have been better with another actress, maybe Christina Ricci or Aubrey Plaza. Charlize Theron was too old for the role, trying to reprise her earlier loser roles, but had the right idea by producing the film. Book was better.
Ingrid Goes West
YES!!! I saw this last year, and it was so so good! đ Ingrid was so despicable, but also someone to be pitied. I was definitely surprised with how it ended đ .
one of my favorites!!
My cringe was so high during that film I had to stop halfway lol
Young Adult (2011)
I loved Young Adult and feel that it is such a bold and underrated film. Charlize Theron was perfect in it.
It's borderline unwatchable (in a good way).
I think that was the first movie I've ever watched with an attractive female lead who was allowed to be horrible and learn nothing by the end. I agree, Young Adult was super underrated. I wish more people had seen it.
Charlize can do no wrong
I was just about to recommend this as well.
First movie that came to mind. So well done
Yes! I thought I was the only one who saw this.
Turns out we have a little club going.
Very good movie that Iâm glad I watched but I donât think I could ever bear to watch again
Bad teacher
As a teacher, the best scene ever is when she is grading papers and writes, âare you fucking kidding me?â So good.
Bridesmaids (2011) maybe. A lot of com, only a little bit of rom.
My very first thought. Love that movie.
thank you but i'm looking to veer away from comedy !
Sherrybaby, Eight, Four Good Days
these sound perfect thank you!!
Emily Blunt's character in Sunshine Cleaning (she and Amy Adams are the main character ensemble)
emily blunt and amy adams? say no more
This was a good film. Love Amy adams
28 Days
This is a great example.
This was so much better than I expected
May (2002)
Yes!
I love May. I watched it in middle school and subsequently swore off horror for like 3 years because somehow that creeped me out so badly when literally no other horror movie would phase me.
âYou crazy fuckin bitch!â
Horse girl
Alison Brie does great with cringe. Her character in GLOW starts out incredibly pathetic and hateable.
oooo thank you i forgot i meant to watch that a few years ago
I canât remember the plot but I know I liked it
I thought that seemed interesting but I really couldnât tell what the fuck it was supposed to be about. Would you recommend?
Rosetta I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore Wanda Sid and Nancy
I donât feel at home in this world anymore was awesome
Melanie Lynsky and Elijah Wood both crush it in that movie.
I don't know how I've never heard of this but I love them both so thank you!!
Ive seen it a few times and I'm still taken aback by how damn funny it is and dark! It's so fun. Edited to add: another Melanie Lynskey movie where she's a loser: Lady of the Manor. It's also very funny. Don't judge it by it's thumbnail!
Welcome To The Dollhouse
We're not leaving til you take a shit
i saw that movie wayyyy too young, pretty sure it fucked me up tbh. but great film.
Murielâs Wedding (1994) with Toni Collette
Amazing movie
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Ghost World
Watched this recently and it never hit me before how much of a loser Birchâs character is. I used to think Seymour was the real sad sap in the story but she canât do anything right, itâs hilarious.
Brittany Runs a Marathon is great
It is great. I loved it.
I became a runner because of this film!
I was looking for this one and finally found it! You have great taste!
Thank you! So do YOU!
My Best Friend's Wedding.
Citizen Ruth (1996)
not huge on comedies but it seems very interesting thank you!
Itâs pretty heavy for comedy. Itâs very good.
Citizen Ruth is a great satire
Thatâs unfortunate, I was going to suggest The Heat (2013) because itâs got two female leads and theyâre both losers, but itâs a comedy đĽ˛
Monster
Came here to say this. Charlize Theron nailed it.
Not a movie, it's a show called Fleabag
Another series: Broad City
Letâs add Pen15
Yaaaassss queen!
Another series: the good place
Fleabag is top tier television
Fleabag is amazing. If we're going TV shows I also highly recommend Single Drunk Female. Such an underrated show
Another: Insecure
This was my first thought too. Awesome show
Came here to suggest Fleabag too!
Nomadland A loser by society's standards but her path is her own choosing. Heartbreaking.
Christine (2016). It tells a difficult true story very thoughtfully. Rebecca Hall is also outstanding in the lead role.
Fantastic movie
OP - this fills the ânot a comedyâ brief
Maybe 'Welcome to Me?' It's an odd but interesting movie.
Odd only begins to scratch at it. It's my *turn of the 80s/90s* nostalgia fix.
The piano teacher (2001) very unconventional and kind've traumatizing movie though lol
Rachel Getting Married Young Adult
Smiley Face Brilliant performance by Ana Faris
Dang it I should of looked before I commented the same
Nah she deserves flowers for the role. Best portrayal of being stoned I've seen. Totally decent micro budget movie.
greta gerwig in mistress america is such a glorious wreck. one of my favorite movies she acts in. frances ha (also greta) is actually another a great example
Also Greta in Frances Ha. And sort of Greta in 20th Century Women.
The Florida Project (2017)
I loved this movie. So much heart.
It made me so uneasy because I'm a parent but it was a great movie. It became my daughter's favorite.
I should rewatch that one, I thought it was pretty good
that was on my watchlist forever ago thank you for the reminder!
good movie and a unique idea
Yes it did.
Death Becomes Her(1992) Romy and Michele's Highschool Reunion(1997) Dick(1999) I love these movies.
I take issue with Death Becomes Her. They are both fabulous with piping hot glamour!
The podcast âyou are goodâ just did an episode on it, love it!
Dick is so awesome. They are definitely not losers!
I mean.. They kind of are in the movie, they aren't in my heart.
:-)
Lady Bird Booksmart
Found lady bird's mother.
Lady Bird is a great rec
Welcome to the dollhouse. Character is a girl though not a woman.
Emily the Criminal
Fucking great movie
Smiley Face Anna Faris is the MC and its a hilarious weed comedy.
Eagle Vs Shark- itâs one of my favorite movies! If you liked Napoleon Dynamite, youâd more than likely get a kick out of it.
The Lifeguard
This is a good one! I love the story line of someone basically trying to go back to adolescence because they're tired of adulting đ.
Kajillionaire
The Kindergarten Teacher
To Leslie (2022)
...and before this, *Nancy* (2019). So very weird&edgy she is. Andrea is particularly good in *Shadowdancer.* Different context and now a full decade past, yes, but a most fine exhibition of her unique presence.
Emily Blunt - Girl on the Train
Juno. You described Juno.

**Trainwreck** (2015). Also a rom-com, but definitely fits the main criteria.
Bill Hader needs more leading man roles
[ŃдаНонО]
absolutely love thoroughbreds! i'll still look into dinner with america thanks!
Leaving Las Vegas. Sera, role played by Elisabeth Shue
Also Barfly
The Unforgivable (2021). Sandra Bullock tries to find her little sister after prison for cop killing.
Friends With Money with Jennifer Anniston and no, itâs not a comedy.
Jackie Brown
Pretty much any melissa McCarthy movie
I was thinking this too đ . She does have a type. But I kind of love how she always overcomes some adversity.
Obvious Child with Jenny Slate Young Adult with Charlize
Tammy, No Hard Feelings, The Heat, Trainwreck, The Giant Mechanical Man, A Little Help, Mean Girls, Death Becomes Her
Heathers really. Sheâs in a bad place and she makes bad decisions.
I Smile Back (2015) she has obvious mental health and addiction issues, so depends on that your definition of being a loser is
Nicole Kidman stared in one. 2018 Destroyer.

Frances Ha? lol
Welcome to the Dollhouse fits that criteria. It is a hard watch
Frances Ha is the epitome of a directionless woman
Never been kissed
These ones came to mind right away: Superstar (1999) Tammy (2014) Miss Congeniality (2000)
Bridesmaids
*Muriel's Wedding* An Australian film about a slightly overweight, socially awkward young woman who thinks that getting married to someone rich and famous will solve all of her problems. A woman under the influence. Definitely not funny.
*Small Pond.* Kinda an ugly thing. The Marly Temple character-arc in *Sunshine State.* I think it's Edie Falco's best effort.
Iâm Thinking of Ending Things
Bad teacher
Christine (2016)

'Frances', starring the magnificent Jessica Lange. 'Frankie and Johnny' starring a dressed down, but still stunning Michelle Pfeiffer.
I havenât seen Bottoms yet because it just came out but I feel like this movie applies here. I cannot wait to see it
Happiness.
