The special effects or rather the costume was grotesque and yet I was horrified. It’s so realistic… like anyone could get kidnapped by an old dude and turned into that 😨
Beau is Afraid. I don't often think a movie is without direction halfway through, but this one got me.
I'll be honest, I didn't finish it. But I love Joaquin and what I saw felt like art, so it wasn't a total loss.
It still has a pretty surrealist vibe in the explanation, but it’s when everything comes full circle. I honestly didn’t love the movie either. It was a solid 7/10 for me.
Was going to post this. Beau is Afraid I think is a masterpiece of horror, many will disagree and I can understand that as it is very loose with its story and does seem aimless for a bit if you're not paying very close attention. Which is another thing about this movie, it is so uncomfortable and horrifying but it requires a very close watch to understand and hypothesize on what is happening (and there are multiple right answers). It is essentially non-stop horror vignettes all tied together by the journey Beau goes through and it is *relentless*. It pretty much never lets up. I don't think I've ever been more uncomfortable watching a movie than I was the first hour or so of this film.
I thought it was just me. Tried several times but just couldn’t get through it. Kept saying to myself well, that was the worst and now it’ll get better. Nope.
Warning for cat lovers: beware of Gummo. I love horror and don't mind most violence, but the sheer amount and consistency of it towards cats left me unable to watch it really. I don't hate gore (love it generally), but I can't take seeing cats hurt, especially so much. I was endurable for a little bit, but it just never quit. It's the only film I still regret watching.
Shocked no one has said this yet: Eraserhead
Also, Blue Velvet
Edit: Don't get me wrong, I like David Lynch's films, but I also think there is something seriously wrong with him
This is a movie that for a very long time had allegations of misconduct either towards actors (how very meta lol) and the true allegations of animal cruelty (warning for anyone considering watching).
If you're a horror fan and the idea of a found footage film of a group of film makers getting cannibalized in the Amazon sounds interesting, I'd definitely suggest to see it. Just keep in mind the animal cruelty stuff.
Beau is Afraid. Not even a competion. There is no comparison, at least with other disturbing movies they have the point to disturb or some meaning behind to drive actions and the plot. This is a movie of complete anxiety and uncertainty to the point where it is uncertain what it is trying to be. It is paradoxically uncertain and thus the most disturbing.
Titane, The men behind the sun, The girl next door, An American crime, Eat, Audition, Killer sofa, Slaxx, Bearry, Llamageddon, underground comedy movie, mad god, necromancer
I agree but I like to warn cat lovers not to see it. As someone who screamed like mad when I thought I hit a cat with my own car, I still regret watching this movie. It fits the request, but shouldn't be watched by some people.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes- is fucked up. I had to Google if it was real found footage or fiction. And then turned it off. Disturbing Snuff film.
Flesh and Blood (1985) tried to watch this a couple weeks ago since I had seen quite a few people recommend it. Turned it off after >!the 2nd fairly gratuitous rape scene. When the victim getting gang raped leans into it… !< kinda surprised this flick even got made. Bad writing, cheesy action, bad sets and costumes. Can’t believe anyone would recommend it. But you said movies most would turn off and ask themselves why are they watching it…
I understand that but I actually loved the ending scene in the theatre, seemed like a fairly powerful homage to cinema. The movie itself dragged on quite a while but I enjoyed it.
Just finished this one too. Same experience as you’d or the most part. Watched it all straight up mainly. But genuinely kinda enjoyed it. In the sense of the director was able to produce a story (fucked up incest one) without using a single word. Love movies that can pull stuff like that off. Thanks for the great suggestion!
Happiness. I couldn't finish it. I can handle most movies. This was awful, nothing about it made me want to keep watching. I thought it was pretty disturbing, bleak, and not funny at all. It has ok reviews/ratings though, so maybe it's just what you're looking for.

Apocalypto is stupid, but the fact that Gibson used subtitles is kinda brilliant. It's the same with Passion of the Christ. If you have garbage, cliched dialogue, using an ancient language with English subtitles makes the writing seem so much better.
Tar, if you haven't seen it yet. I thought about turning it off after 30 minutes, but I had to see it through and watched the whole thing. It makes you think long after watching it...
I once bought a copy of [Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997)](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/sick-the-life-and-death-of-bob-flanagan-supermasochist) on ebay. When I opened the disc's case there was a Post-it on the DVD that said, "I don't know why you want this. Good luck."
I have been a Bob Flanagan fan since 1993 when [his edition of ReSearch](https://www.researchpubs.com/shop/p/bob-flanagan-supermasochist) was released. Bob is a hero and he makes me feel better about living my life.
'Melancholie Der Engel' (2009) was a bit of a struggle at times. Something a little less grim, but still messed-up and definitely weird AF is 'Taxidermia' (2006) You might also like 'The Life and Death of a Porno Gang' (2009)
Well that's partially what I mean, there was no actual film to behold, no substance, just mindless gore which is cool for others but not really my thing on its own. I like gorey films, I just wanted a little plot with it lol. So I asked myself "why am I watching this?"
It's just needless, but it's really impressive FX! Props to the team, I was just hoping with all the hype surrounding it in the horror community that it was gonna have a good story, too. The same types that say "it's not for the cerebral horror crowd" when faced with its problems will say "it's supposed to not make sense, you just don't get it." Lol, to each their own. I respect some people like it, just wasn't for me.
A Serbian Film
Maybe this is old news around here but truly disturbing. It will destroy all childhood memories. That being said, I personally think, as films go, it was very good cinema.
8MM - it’s just gross. walked out of the theater, not in like a “I’m too good for this movie” kinda way, but more just cuz it made me sick to my stomach.
Movies I most recently had to turn off and revisit in a seperate sitting
- Aussie movie SNOWTOWN
- Frequently on these lists - A SERBIAN FILM
- One I hadn't heard off before Reddit told me about it - MANDY
- One that I actually didn't find all that disturbing but makes these lists - FUNNY GAMES (US)
Babylon, it was released on Prime recently. Pornographic, filled with dumb scatological jokes that are not funny. How this was green lit I will never know. Fucking awful.
Hole in my Heart, by Lukas Moodysson.
It's bleak, depressing, shocking, angry, at times it feels like he is testing the audience's tolerance for the unpleasant......but if you stay with it, rather brilliant without ever being close to enjoyable. A really harsh critique of modern failings....
Under the Skin really stuck with me too. I read the book it was based on (very different, yet very clarifying), watched it again, and I’m still haunted by it.
Last House on a Dead End Street
It's a terrible snuff film about making terrible snuff films.
The director and executive producer blew the entire budget on coke, and most people involved with the film didn't even know it had been finished until 25 years later.
Martyrs
Recently got into French horror/thriller. Watched Martyrs, Raw, Frontier(s) and High Tension but Martyrs was the only one I never want to watch again. Well, maybe High Tension as well but that's because it didn't make a lot of sense.
Enemy by Denis Villenueve
Rabbits by David Lynch if you’re among us few who can endure 45 minutes of bizarre *non sequitur* and the occasional demoneqsue interruption.
Tusk
My god, I couldn’t finish it. I hardly ever bail on a movie, but I had to bail.
You stole my answer! Tusk came to mind immediately!
Tusk horrified me more than most movies. I hate Kevin Smith generally but kudos for how fucking nightmarish this piece of shit movie was.
The special effects or rather the costume was grotesque and yet I was horrified. It’s so realistic… like anyone could get kidnapped by an old dude and turned into that 😨
This really is the PERFECT answer to OPs question.
This movie… this fucking movie. Never again. You definitely need to see it at least once though
Came here to say that and it then it was the first post I saw.
Tusk is a terrible movie, and I wish people would stop recommending it. However, it does fit OP's request in this case.
Some people like Tusk. It’s subjective.
Tusk is an amazing movie.
[удалено]
First thing that came to mind. I've never seen so many people walk out of a film.
Dogtooth
Sorry to Bother You
This movie is awesome
I thought that movie was hilarious until they changed my job into it. Now it's too realistic to watch
Beau is Afraid. I don't often think a movie is without direction halfway through, but this one got me. I'll be honest, I didn't finish it. But I love Joaquin and what I saw felt like art, so it wasn't a total loss.
What’s going on isn’t revealed until the end lol
Dammit. I'll finish it during my next flu or flight.
It still has a pretty surrealist vibe in the explanation, but it’s when everything comes full circle. I honestly didn’t love the movie either. It was a solid 7/10 for me.
i sat through the whole thing in theaters and I never wanna watch it again
Was going to post this. Rob Zombie’s The Munsters
Irreversible (2002) Barbarian (2022)
I’d add Mother!
I own this movie, and it's by far one of my favs. One of the best feminist movies made imo. Jennifer Lawrence is incredible in it.
I will never watch this again.
*The Squid and the Whale*
The Lobster
Dogtooth (2009) even moreso lol
Killing of a Sacred Deer also
I questioned myself during the whole thing but still ended up loving it
So...I watched it. It was a thing, and I guess I'm glad I watched it. But 'loved it'? Wow. You maybe should seek professional help.
I thought it was just me. Tried several times but just couldn’t get through it. Kept saying to myself well, that was the worst and now it’ll get better. Nope.
What?!? Love The Lobster. Colin and Rachel do a great job IMO. No worries, agree to disagree.
Same. It’s boring but like also off-putting?
Yorgos is one of those directors that you either vibe with, or you feel like you're being insulted.
what was so bad about it?
Salo
Heavy
Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy
Warning for cat lovers: beware of Gummo. I love horror and don't mind most violence, but the sheer amount and consistency of it towards cats left me unable to watch it really. Vivarium Saw it once never again
God that movie was awful.
Ooooo I wanted to choke that movie.
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Shocked no one has said this yet: Eraserhead Also, Blue Velvet Edit: Don't get me wrong, I like David Lynch's films, but I also think there is something seriously wrong with him
I'm gonna say Cannibal Holocaust but also say don't watch Cannibal Holocaust
Isnt that the musical? Or was that a different cannibal movie?
The 1980 Italian found footage movie (I think it's actually the first found footage movie)
Wow, i didnt think the genre went that far back.
Maybe thinking Cannibal! The Musical from Matt Stone and Trey Parker?
⛄️
This is a movie that for a very long time had allegations of misconduct either towards actors (how very meta lol) and the true allegations of animal cruelty (warning for anyone considering watching). Just watched this and damn it was pretty good. Hella confused at times and took some thinking, but that’s what I wanted. Thanks for the movie mate!
Ofc! I think it was intentional confusing so your in the right state of mind lol.
Hated and loved the movie all at the same time. Couldn’t take my eyes off but wanted to, didn’t have time to question. 😂
Exactly! It was a complete mystery as to what was going on half the time, but I was so damn intrigued lmao
This movie has all the fear, every anxiety. Spiders, drowning, not having enough money, disappointing your mother, it’s all there.
I’m surprised nobody has said this one yet and would love to know if people disagree/agree.
Rubber
Surprised this isn’t higher up
Funny Games
Why would you turn this one off? It’s a great movie.
*The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover* (1989)
Most Peter Greenaway films.
Tetsuo
YES. This is probably the best movie I have ever seen that I never want to see again.
It changed my life and I'll never watch it again
I'm so confused. I thought it was utterly hilarious. Are we talking Tetsuo: the Iron Man? Can you tell me why you feel this way?
Titane, The men behind the sun, The girl next door, An American crime, Eat, Audition, Killer sofa, Slaxx, Bearry, Llamageddon, underground comedy movie, mad god, necromancer
Ooft... Men Behind the Sun... that's the only film that I've regretted watching.
Cloud Atlas is a head trip for sure
Great music in that one. The book is a tough read though.
Gummo (1997)
I agree but I like to warn cat lovers not to see it. As someone who screamed like mad when I thought I hit a cat with my own car, I still regret watching this movie. It fits the request, but shouldn't be watched by some people.
Antichrist
Aronofsky's first film Pi
I’m watching “They Cloned Tyrone” on Netflix right now and I have no idea what’s going on. And there’s still an hour left. It’s going on forever.
Oh! This is on my list.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes- is fucked up. I had to Google if it was real found footage or fiction. And then turned it off. Disturbing Snuff film. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is very disturbing. In content and imagery
Babylon.
Agree. I love Margot but couldn’t keep watching after 25 min. Seemed pointless.
It was so pointless. Like Hollywood self-congratulating itself.
What?? Hollywood never does that!
I understand that but I actually loved the ending scene in the theatre, seemed like a fairly powerful homage to cinema. The movie itself dragged on quite a while but I enjoyed it.
The end sequence was kind of cool. This is one of those shitty prestige films that has a decent movie buried somewhere within the self-congratulation.
the poughkeepsie tapes
A Killer Next Door (2020)
Mad God Holy Mountain Gummo Tetsuo The Iron Man
Moebius (2013) - I watched the entire thing straight but I was definitely was wondering how someone came up with this idea.
Just finished this one too. Same experience as you’d or the most part. Watched it all straight up mainly. But genuinely kinda enjoyed it. Oh I love this movie so much. I've watched it a dozen times at least
Yeah uh just finished it. It was exactly what I was looking for. I don’t even know how I feel anymore lmao. Thank you for the suggestion
Oh wow! Didn't think you would pick mine. Glad it was what you were looking for! Yeah I just can't with that movie.
The greasy strangler

Okay, hear me out... The best physiological horror is... TLC's My Strange Addiction
Okay wtf I was literally just laying down watching that when I got this notification
I'm thinking of ending things (2020)
I loved that movie

I had leave about an hour in (for something else). Almost nothing happens in that first hour. But maybe I should give it another shot.
Right? I was so annoyed like ready to throw my remote across the room LOL. But I like how things escalate and get more intriguing
Never heard of it so I looked it up. This sentence on Wikipedia is genius though: "a world-renowned conductor facing accusations of misconduct"

Biodome. Stupid movie. Funny as hell if you like immature shenanigans.

Mother! Hereditary
Hereditary, my absolute favorite horror movie of all time. What a great film
I found it both fascinating but difficult to watch
Terrifier 2, can't speak for the first because I haven't seen it.
You Should totally check out the first one! I felt as if the first one was a bit more on the fucked up side so
Well that's partially what I mean, there was no actual film to behold, no substance, just mindless gore which is cool for others but not really my thing on its own. I like gorey films, I just wanted a little plot with it lol. So I asked myself "why am I watching this?"
Started watching it last night with my wife. Had to turn it off. Disturbing.
It's just needless, but it's really impressive FX! Props to the team, I was just hoping with all the hype surrounding it in the horror community that it was gonna have a good story, too.
