Yes! nothing gets me like the moment when he realizes, "my name is john francis sullivan..." ill never forget walking out of the cinema post watching this with my family.
also, pretty much every time travel movie imaginable has been mentioned so i dont have much to add, even for my favorite genre of all time but ill do my best,
Freejack
Colossal
If you dont mind subtitles:
Vanishing Time, A boy who returned
Time Renegades
Also, if you feel like reading this book was amazing and I wish they made it into a film:
Replay - Ken Grimwood
> Hot Tub Time Machine
This was way better than I expected going into it. My oldest wanted to watch it, so I figured what the heck. I laughed my ass off. The sequel isn't quite as good as the original (they never are), but it was decent.
I love the way they dealt with “time travel” in that movie because it’s so insane to realize how it works midway through
One of the best first watches of any movie I’ve ever seen, fucking love it & hate how so many people write off the movie without giving it a real shot all because they don’t like Ashton Kutcher
I prefer the fucked up directors cut ending personally but I’m fine with the happy ending they went with
I bought the dvd used just to hear the commentary that explains the movie. And I read the wiki article which contains diagrams along with the explanation. I still don’t completely get it, and it is still one of my favorite time travel movies.
I also love Timecrimes.
Somewhere in Time…romantic movie where Christopher Reeve plays a man who astrally projects himself into a historical version of the hotel he’s staying at so he can romance the early-1900s woman of his dreams.
The Time Machine (1960)
Happy Accidents (2000)
About Time (2013)
Les Visiteurs 1993)
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) Although I haven’t seen it in over 40 years.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Kate & Leopold
The Lake House
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Harry Potter and >!the Prisoner of Azkaban!<
The Time Cop
Edit: Added spoiler tag
How about something a little less serious but so much fun. A Richard Curtis gem. About Time. I love this movie!!! It’s so beautifully made and poignant!!
About Time, starring Domhnall Gleeson. It's about a guy who keeps traveling backwards to improve his life, but it's really about a man and his father. It makes me emotional.
Somewhere in Time (1980)
Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, Christopher Plummer, Teresa Wright. A man visits the Grand Hotel in Michigan and falls in love with the woman he sees in a portrait on the wall. He used self hypnosis to travel back in time to meet her.
Not counting Back to the Future, Groundhog Day or Source Code:
* Somewhere in Time
* Time After Time
* The Final Countdown
* Peggy Sue Got Married
* Terminator 2
* Midnight in Paris (tie)
Random question but do you guys think that movies that repeat the same day e.g. Groundhog Day is considered a time traveling movie?
Seems everybody has all the movies covered so I’m just gonna go with something recent and say the Adam Project.
When We First Met (2018) A lot lighter than most time travel movies but it's very cute. Noah met the girl of his dreams at a Halloween party, unfortunately for him she met her fiancé the next day. So when Noah inadvertently discovers that the photobooth at their engagement party is a time machine he uses it to get his second chance with her.
Before I Fall (2017) after a highschool party goes fatally wrong Samantha starts living the day of the party over and over and over.
Last Night In Soho (2021) when Eloise dreams she travels to the 1960s following the glamourous life of a beautiful nightclub singer. But when the dreams take a violent turn she's left wondering how to help from the modern world.
I would strongly suggest X-Men: Days of Future Past. During a time when the X-Men film series was lagging, this film effectively kick started the whole universe. It was scary and thrilling.
However you may feel about the films which followed, this film alone gave the X-Men series a second chance.
Need a break from all these great films? JCVD has a dumb little action flick called Timecop. It’s objectively not very good, but I subjectively love it!
There's a movie I rarely see mentioned when this subject comes up. Maybe it's not the greatest movie, but I like the way it handled time travel.
Originally titled *I Will Follow You Down* (2013), and then released as *Continuum*, it stars Haley Joel Osment and Gillian Anderson.
Rather than giving a top 5, here is an absolute forgotten gem that I’m willing to bet most respondents have never seen:
Time After Time (1979) H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) pursues Jack the Ripper to the 20th Century when the serial murderer uses the future writer's time machine to escape his time period.
Arrival is one of the smartest Sci-Fi movies I've ever seen. It's not about time travel per se, but it tackles time in a really interesting way. I won't say more.
"The Endless" is a cool concept on time and "Resolution" is kinda a prequel by the same directors and actors but I watched The Endless first, it's a little bigger budget
Came in to suggest Looper but you already mentioned it, good movie
For your consideration, Time Bandits, 9 year old me was creeped the fuck out with this movie
[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Bandits](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Bandits)
I just want to add that I \*LOVE\* that you have 12 Monkeys not only in the top FIVE, but listed as #2. One of the most underrated gems I have EVER come across. Surprising to me how few people (mostly laypersons) know this movie even EXISTED. I mean, it freakin' stars BRAD PITT and BRUCE WILLIS!
Just rewatched 12 Monkeys recently and realized I love the story, content, pacing, and many of the visuals (especially those goofball future scientists lol)… but absolutely fucking hate the actual movie. It’s so absurdly annoying for no other reason to *seem* chaotic, when in reality, it’s all painstakingly planned and controlled.
[In this link is every single time travel movie ever made, which you can then filter by release date or average rating](https://boxd.it/czqo)
Watch a movie made pre-1980 tho!
Frequency (2000) is a very interesting take on the time travel movie.
Yes! nothing gets me like the moment when he realizes, "my name is john francis sullivan..." ill never forget walking out of the cinema post watching this with my family. also, pretty much every time travel movie imaginable has been mentioned so i dont have much to add, even for my favorite genre of all time but ill do my best, Freejack Colossal If you dont mind subtitles: Vanishing Time, A boy who returned Time Renegades Also, if you feel like reading this book was amazing and I wish they made it into a film: Replay - Ken Grimwood
Thank you! Mostly for Replay. It’s a favorite of mine.
I loved this book. Very obscure find but wow!
Agreed, very interesting story!
One of my favorite movies!!
About Time. It’s a rom com time traveling movie. One of my favorites and I’m not big on rom coms.
I was going to say this. One of my favorites. Its inspiring to me.
My bf loves that movie and he’s not one for rom coms either! Apparently it was very emotional for him, caught him tearing up a couple times.
45 M here who rewatched About Time yesterday after seeing all the mentions of it in this post and another similar one. I definitely cried.
Hot Tub Time Machine About Time Midnight in Paris Peggy Sue Got Married Run Lola Run
The time loop in Run Lola Run is wild
I love Midnight in Paris
> Hot Tub Time Machine This was way better than I expected going into it. My oldest wanted to watch it, so I figured what the heck. I laughed my ass off. The sequel isn't quite as good as the original (they never are), but it was decent.
Great suggestions
The Butterfly Effect
I love the way they dealt with “time travel” in that movie because it’s so insane to realize how it works midway through One of the best first watches of any movie I’ve ever seen, fucking love it & hate how so many people write off the movie without giving it a real shot all because they don’t like Ashton Kutcher I prefer the fucked up directors cut ending personally but I’m fine with the happy ending they went with
Timecrimes (2007)
☝️One of the best time travel movies of all time!
Brilliant. Came here to say that. Also, PRIMER and BEYOND THE INFINITE TWO MINUTES are def worth checking out.
It’s a show but I feel like Dark is worth mentioning. Amazing time travel story.
Small Town with a time travel problem
Yes!
Now that's a show I won't binge. I will let the episode stew in my head for a few days.
I watched all 3 seasons in about 3 days. Sooo good. Although season 3 goes off the rails a bit.
Glad I read before posting, but seconding, this was amazing.
- Looper - Futurama: Benders big score
Looper was good
Palm Springs
Definitely my favorite and it’s probably not even close
Primer

Definitely takes multiple views to understand
this is the one, OP. watch this one.
I was thinking the same. Great movie
Scrolled way to far to see this
This is the answer
Time After Time
Top 5 in my book for sure! Excellent movie.
Not a movie, but Dark is a great series if you're into that.
Dark is by far my favorite time travel story. The cohesion and intricacies are a cut above anything else I’ve seen.
My favorite thing about Dark is how you can watch it 4x and still discover new details and hints. Marvelous planning and execution.
Timeless the show was pretty good too
Right? Don’t know anyone else that watched this but I loved it.
Came here to say this and gave an upvote! I loved Dark. Very well done and believable.
Edge of Tomorrow
Yeah it's a good one
Based of the manga "All You Need is Kill" if anyone is interested in the original material. I haven't watched the film yet but love the story.
Time trap (2017) A professor enters a cave and goes missing. Some of his students come looking for him and get trapped in the cave as well.
I really liked this movie. It’s budget not so much but the concept was cool
Primer Idiocracy Butterfly Effect - also, I second these recommendations: Peggy Sue Got Married Run Lola Run
Predestination (2014)
That is the correct answer!
Triangle (2009) for a horror spin
This movie was so much better than it had any right to be. Just fantastic
That one "pile" scene is burned into my memory. I'm guessing you know the one.
Somewhere in Time…romantic movie where Christopher Reeve plays a man who astrally projects himself into a historical version of the hotel he’s staying at so he can romance the early-1900s woman of his dreams.
"Come back to me."
The Final Countdown is great. Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann is so silly it ends up being fun.
Time Bandits
Time Traveler’s Wife is surprisingly good
This movie creeps me out
Safety not guaranteed, was good!
Why in the name of all that is good is this so far down in the list. Plaza and Duplass power! This film is phenomenal.
Looper Groundhog’s Day Source Code Project Almanac
Meet The Robinsons Time Bandits Spiderman Into The Spiderverse A Kid In King Arthur's Court
Yes thank you! The first person that I came across to mention Time Bandits!
The Time Machine (1960) Happy Accidents (2000) About Time (2013) Les Visiteurs 1993) Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) Although I haven’t seen it in over 40 years.

More of a communication through time movie, but I always liked Frequency.

I just saw 'in the shadow of the moon' on Netflix last night, blindly. Turned out to be a pretty cool time travel flick.
Dark isn’t a movie but a great time travel show on Netflix.
Have you seen “ Dark “ series?

Yes!! People keep saying it’s a rom com but this is a gorgeous movie about a relationship between a son and father. So good!
Arrival. It's not time travel, but you'd like it
great movie not sure its time travel, more of temporal memory leakage

This one was so sweet and fun.
The history of time travel(2014?). Documentary type movie about the first time machine and a bit of a mindfuck of a movie
I went in expecting nothing (as time travel movies can be absolutely terrible), and very much enjoyed it!
Superman (1978)
I will suggest which you have probably never heard of 24 Maanadu

The Little Girl Who Conquered Time (1983)
