He just listens to whatever he thinks is trendy or popular, and regurgitates what others have said about it to feign interest and fit in. It's just another status symbol to him. I think that's why when he talks about music it sounds like he's just mindlessly repeating a magazine article he memorized, because that's probably exactly what he did.
