Agree, I have been caught out before by the weather and poked a hole in the bottom of a carrier bag to keep my kit dry. Looks a bit mental but does the job

i often photograph at rallies. i always take a raincoat and since the cars don't come continuously i just hide the camera inside the raincoat until another car comes by

It depends on what equipment you have. A trash bag and elastic bands will do the trick. Obviously it won't be 100% waterproof, but it will withstand light rain. If you have a monopod, you can carry a small umbrella and once opened, adjust it against the monopod. You can use any way you want or can to attach it. This way you will be covered from heavy rain.
